POV: ELOWEN VALE (FIRST-PERSON NARRATOR)

“Keep everyone away from the opening,” Kael ordered. “If the ground shifts again, I don’t want anyone standing close enough to be pulled in.”

Thomas repeated the command to the defenders.

The eastern courtyard emptied slowly. Injured guards were carried towards the infirmary, while the others moved behind the inner wall. Two men brought ropes and wooden supports, but Kael stopped them before they approached the broken section.

  • The keeper’s passage

Elowen’s POVThe records had mentioned the western channel, the lower seal and the keeper’s refusal to surrender the second key. Now we had found a concealed route beneath a storehouse that had supposedly been abandoned for years. It was tempting to treat every discovery as proof of the same thing. But we still didn’t know who had built the passage or whether it had anything to do with the hidden door beneath the infirmary.“What do we do now?” I asked.Thomas stood and brushed the dirt from his hands.“We secure the openings and record what we’ve found. Then we search the old plans for this section of the building. If there’s a safe route into the passage, we’ll find it before anyone goes inside.”Kael nodded. “And we keep the second key where it is until we know what it opens.”I looked at him.“You still think we shouldn’t try it?”“I think we’ve found evidence that the keeper deliberately protected the lower seal. Until we know why, opening it could undo whatever they were trying

  • The Passage No One Recorded

Elowen’s POVBy the time Thomas returned with the tools, Kael had already decided we weren’t going back to the western storehouse until the eastern defences were secure.I disagreed with him.“We have a trail leading beneath the building, records showing that the keeper refused to surrender the key, and a hidden passage that someone may still be using. If we wait until the siege is over, we might lose our chance to find out where it leads.”“And if the floor collapses while we’re underneath it, we won’t be finding anything,” Kael replied.“We can inspect it without going inside.”“That’s what you said about the passage beneath the infirmary.”“I didn’t go in alone.”“That isn’t the point, Elowen.”Thomas placed his tools on the table between us. “We could send two guards to inspect the ground outside the storehouse. They won’t enter the building or disturb the lower level. If they find evidence of a safe entrance, we can decide what to do next.”Kael considered the suggestion.“Two gu

  • The trail that was hidden

Elowen’s POVI checked the box for anything else, but it was empty apart from the cloth and broken seal. The cloth was damp and brittle, with a small metal loop sewn into one corner. It might once have held a tag or a fastening, but there was no way to tell.“Could the register be somewhere else in this building?” I asked.“We should finish searching before we decide,” Thomas said.We worked through the remaining shelves. Most contained ordinary maintenance records, and several had been damaged beyond use. At the far end of the room, we found a narrow door leading to the lower level.Water stains marked the wall around its frame.Thomas tested the floor outside it with the iron bar. The stone sounded solid near the doorway, but the sound changed farther in.“The lower floor may be unstable,” he said. “We’re not going down there without proper equipment.”Kael agreed. We had no reason to risk another collapse, especially when the eastern wall remained under threat. Before leaving, I lo

  • The keeper’s last record

Elowen’s POV Thomas read the note again before handing it back to me.“The keeper did not leave the keep,” he said. “Someone wants us to believe that.”“Or someone wants us to know it.”Kael stood beside the locked Archives door, studying the space beneath it. “Either way, the person who left this knew we would come here.”The archivist looked deeply uncomfortable. “I can assure you that no one has entered the restricted section during my tenure.”“How long have you been responsible for the Archives?” I asked.“Eleven years.”“And the door has been locked for all eleven?”“Yes.”“Then you can’t tell us what happened before you took the position.”He pressed his lips together. “No, I cannot.”I slipped the note into my pocket. The handwriting was neat, with no signature or mark to identify its author. Whoever had written it had chosen a message that raised more questions than it answered. If the keeper had stayed inside Threshold, where had they gone? Were they still alive? And why ha

  • The keeper is missing

Elowen’s POVBecause you keep acting as though the wound doesn’t matter.”His expression changed, and I realised I’d pushed too far. He wasn’t pretending the injury was harmless. He was trying to carry out his duties while the keep was under attack, just as he had done before the healer forced him to sit down.I lowered my voice.“Let the guards observe the Crown’s movements. You don’t have to stand beside the wall to command them.”Kael studied me for a moment before turning to Thomas.“Send two experienced defenders to watch the equipment from a safe position. They are not to approach it. If the weapon starts charging, they leave immediately.”Thomas gave the order to the waiting guard.I was glad Kael had listened, but I knew his decision had little to do with me. The Crown’s latest movement might be connected to the buried structure, and neither of us could afford to ignore it.Still, we couldn’t abandon the search beneath the infirmary.Thomas arranged for a guard to remain near

  • The footsteps behind the door

POV: ELOWEN VALE (FIRST-PERSON NARRATOR)We had almost reached the infirmary stairs when Thomas stopped.“Those footsteps,” he said. “They were moving away from us.”Kael turned towards the water channel. “You heard them too?”“I did.”“Then why are we walking away?”“Because we have no idea what we’re following,” Kael replied. “And we don’t know whether that key was left for us.”Thomas glanced at the maintenance map in his hand. “Someone wanted us to find it. The voice told us to come through the western channel, and the key appeared at the end.”“That’s what makes it suspicious,” Kael said.I agreed with him, though I didn’t want to admit it. We had spent days reacting to discoveries beneath Threshold, and every new clue seemed designed to push us towards another one. The voice knew things about my mother that it had no reason to know unless it had been close to her. Yet it continued to withhold its identity. If it wanted our help, why wouldn’t it tell us what it needed?I looked b
