The screech of the escaping steam didn't just hurt Jevan’s ears; it vibrated his very teeth, rattling his jaw until his skull ached. It was a high-frequency, metallic shriek that sounded like a giant iron beast having its throat cut.
He didn't even have time to cover his face before the main manifold of the filtration pump gave up on life entirely.
With a deafening BOOM, the copper bypass line tore itself from the wall mounts. A blinding wall of white, superheated steam and scalding water erupted outward, hitting Jevan like a physical fist. The force of the blast lifted his boots off the ground and threw him backward. He flew through the air, flailing wildly, before crashing hard into a pile of empty plastic crates. The crates shattered under his weight in a spectacular chorus of snaps and pops, burying him in a heap of sharp, dusty blue plastic.
Jevan lay there for a second, staring up at the corrugated iron ceiling, completely dazed. The room was rapidly filling with white fog, making it look like a very humid, very industrial heaven.
"Well," Jevan wheezed, his voice sounding incredibly small in his own ears. "That could have gone better."
Suddenly, the rusted fire exit at the back of the room didn't just open—it practically flew off its hinges. A heavy, steel-toed boot slammed into the metal door, sending it screeching outward.
Through the thick, swirling clouds of steam strode Svara Anindhita. She was wearing a faded, grease-stained nurse’s apron over a pair of rugged cargo pants, her dark hair pulled back into a messy, utilitarian bun. A thick, industrial dust mask hung loosely around her neck, and her eyes, wide with sheer exasperation, immediately locked onto the pile of broken crates.
"Jevan!" she yelled, her voice cutting through the dying hiss of the steam. She marched over, grabbed him by the collar of his grease-stained shirt, and hauled him upward with a strength that defied her slight frame. "What the hell did you do? I could hear this place screaming from three blocks away!"
"Ah, Svara! Great to see you," Jevan stammered, coughing violently as a mouthful of soot and steam hit his throat. "I was just... performing a highly calculated pressure release. It’s a technical term. You wouldn't understand."
"You blew up the pump, didn't you?" she deadpans, dragging him toward the open door.
"I prefer the term 'rapid, unplanned disassembly,'" Jevan gasped, stumbling as his boots caught on a loose pipe.
Behind them, the main boiler of the filtration unit let out a deep, terrifying growl. The metal cylinder was glowing an angry, dull red.
"We need to go. Now," Svara said, her cynical demeanor instantly vanishing into pure, adrenaline-fueled panic.
She shoved Jevan out of the doorway just as the primary boiler went critical. The explosion was magnificent. A shockwave of hot air and flying scrap metal tore through the pump room. As they tumbled onto the dusty gravel of the alleyway outside, Jevan looked back just in time to see the Leader’s blue plastic water-jug helmet shoot out of the collapsed roof like a cheap, whistling firework, soaring high into the cloudless sky before disappearing over the dunes.
"See?" Jevan pointed weakly at the sky. "A silver lining. Or a blue plastic one."
"Shut up and run!" Svara shrieked, grabbing his arm and yanking him to his feet.
The peace of Sector 4 was officially dead. The explosion had acted like a beacon, and the surrounding ruins were already crawling with activity. As they sprinted down the narrow, twisting alleyways of the dilapidated sector, Jevan could hear the distant, angry shouting of scavengers and the unmistakable, throaty roar of modified engines.
"Hey! There they are!" a voice bellowed from a nearby rooftop.
Jevan glanced up. Two local scavengers, clad in mismatched leather and rusted chainmail, were peering over the edge of a crumbling brick building. One of them immediately hurled a heavy, rusted iron pipe down at them.
"Look out!" Jevan grabbed Svara’s shoulder, pulling her to the side.
The pipe crashed into the dirt right where she had been a millisecond prior, kicking up a spray of gravel.
"Are they throwing plumbing at us?!" Svara yelled, her legs pumping as they sprinted past a row of collapsed sheet-metal shanties. "Is this a thematic chase?!"
"It's the wasteland, Svara! They throw what they have!" Jevan shouted back, ducking as a large, jagged piece of concrete sailed over his head. "And honestly, their aim is terrible! They should really practice more!"
"I came down to that damn pump station to get three gallons of sterile water for the clinic's kidney patients," Svara muttered, her teeth clenched as they rounded a sharp corner. "And instead, I’m running for my life with a human disaster zone. This is the absolute worst trade deal in the history of trade deals!"
"Hey, I'm a valuable asset!" Jevan protested, leaping over a pile of rotting tires. "Who else is going to keep the lights on? Who else can make a steam valve sing like a dying bird?"
"Literally anyone else!" Svara shot back. "A trained monkey with a wrench would be an upgrade!"
Behind them, the roar of engines grew louder, accompanied by the high-pitched, metallic whine of dirt bikes. The scavengers from the dunes had entered the sector. They weren't pathetic like the Thirst Lords; these were actual, bloodthirsty raiders, their bikes decorated with rusted spikes and skulls of mutated desert rodents.
"My garage is right around this corner!" Jevan panted, his chest burning from the dust and heat. "We can take the prototype!"
"The prototype?" Svara’s eyes widened in horror. "You mean that suicide machine you built out of a lawnmower and a pressure cooker?!"
"I call it the Steam-Scythe 3000, thank you very much!"
They skidded around the corner, kicking up a massive cloud of dust, and burst into a small, dilapidated garage alcove. Resting in the center of the shadows was Jevan’s pride and joy. It was a customized scooter, though "scooter" was a generous term. It looked like a stripped-down motorcycle frame that had been violently welded to a copper-plated boiler. A web of chaotic rubber hoses and brass dials covered the sides, and a massive, heavy-duty pressure release valve served as the rear exhaust.
"Get on!" Svara commanded, immediately vaulting over the front and grabbing the handlebars.
Jevan blinked, momentarily stunned. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're driving? Have you ever even ridden a—"
"Get on or I'm leaving you to become raider upholstery!" she roared.
Jevan scrambled onto the small, uncomfortable metal plate behind her, his hands desperately searching for something to hold onto. He ended up wrapping his arms tightly around her waist.
Svara didn't hesitate. She slammed her boot down on the manual kickstart lever.
VROOM-PFFT-CLACK!
The scooter didn't just start; it screamed. A massive jet of pressurized steam hissed from the sides, and the vehicle shot forward out of the garage like a rocket. Jevan’s head snapped back with enough force to pop his neck. He let out a high-pitched, highly unmanly yelp as they cleared the garage and tore onto the main dirt road of the sector.
"Whoa! Slow down! This isn't an ambulance!" Jevan yelled over the deafening, mechanical chugging of the steam piston beneath them.
"I drove an ambulance through a collapsing highway during the Great Drought!" Svara yelled back, leaning aggressively into a wide curve. The scooter tilted so far to the left that Jevan’s knee brushed the dusty ground, sending a shower of sparks flying from his metal knee-pad. "Your little toy is a piece of cake!"
Behind them, three scav-bikes burst out of the alleyway. The riders were shouting, revving their engines, the gap between them closing rapidly.
"They're gaining, Svara! They have actual gasoline!" Jevan warned, looking back at the approaching cloud of dust.
"Then make this stupid thing go faster!" she shouted, taking a sharp ninety-degree turn onto a narrow side street.
The sudden change in direction sent the scooter bouncing over a deep pothole. The engine let out a horrible, wet choking sound.
Chug... chug... phut...
The aggressive, high-pitched hum of the steam boiler suddenly died down to a pathetic, rattling gasp. Thick, oily black smoke began to cough out of the exhaust, blowing directly into Jevan’s face. The scooter’s speed began to drop rapidly.
"What did you do?!" Svara demanded, twisting the throttle back and forth, but the engine only responded with more pathetic sputtering.
"The fuel-to-air ratio is off!" Jevan coughed, wiping soot from his eyes. "The steam is condensing too fast because of the ambient heat! I need to adjust the bypass needle!"
"Then adjust it!"
"It's on the side of the engine block! I have to lean down to reach it!"
Jevan had no choice. He had to crawl forward, locking his legs tightly around Svara’s waist for leverage, and lean his entire upper body completely off the right side of the speeding, bouncing scooter. The ground was rushing past inches beneath his face, a blur of grey dirt and sharp rocks.
He reached out with his right hand, grabbing the vibrating copper fuel line to steady it, while his left hand reached for the pressure dial. But as he did, the line began to slip.
"I need to hold the seal together!" Jevan yelled, his voice whipped away by the wind. "But I need to turn the screw at the same time! I don't have enough hands!"
"Use your teeth!" Svara screamed, dodging a rusted shopping cart in the middle of the road with a violent swerve that almost sent Jevan flying off.
"My teeth?!"
"Just do it!"
Jevan reached into his pocket and pulled out a short, flathead screwdriver. With a grimace, he clamped his teeth onto the hard plastic handle. Hanging precariously off the side of the machine, his face inches from the spinning, hot metal of the drive belt, he carefully aligned the flathead tip with the tiny brass screw on the carburetor-style valve.
With his teeth holding the screwdriver steady, Jevan had to twist his entire head to turn the screw, looking like a crazed, mechanical owl.
"Humph... mmmph..." Jevan grunted, his jaw aching intensely as the scooter hit another bump. He almost bit his tongue in half.
"Are you doing it?!" Svara yelled, glancing down at him.
"Ith... harrrd..." Jevan mumbled around the screwdriver, his eyes watering from the heat radiating off the engine. He forced his neck to twist another quarter-turn, praying the metal wouldn't snap.
With a sudden, violent screee-pop, the boiler pressure stabilized. The engine roared back to life with a healthy, aggressive hum, and a jet of superheated steam blasted out of the side exhaust, hitting the leading dirt-bike raider square in the chest.
The raider shrieked, losing control of his bike. The vehicle swerved wildly, crashing headfirst into a pile of rusted sheet metal in a spectacular explosion of sparks and debris.
"Nice!" Svara yelled. "Whatever you did, it worked!"
Jevan pulled himself back onto the seat, spitting the screwdriver into his hand and rubbing his aching jaw. "I thhhink I chipped a thhhooth," he lisps, wincing. "But at least we're alive."
The relief was short-lived.
Ahead of them, the dusty road was coming to an end, opening up to the barren wasteland that lay beyond Sector 4. Looming in the distance, surrounded by a fortress of cracked concrete, rusted chain-link fences, and barricades of old sandbags, was the abandoned regional hospital. It was a massive, bleak monument to the old world.
But the Steam-Scythe 3000 had reached its absolute limit. The final burst of speed had put too much pressure on the jerry-rigged boiler.
With a loud, metallic CLANG-BANG, the main pressure cylinder ruptured. A massive cloud of black soot and scalding water vapor erupted from the engine, and the scooter died completely, the wheels locking up as they skidded across the dirt.
"No, no, no! Keep rolling!" Jevan yelled, frantically kicking his feet against the ground to maintain their momentum.
Svara steered the dying, smoking machine with expert precision. They slid sideways through the dirt, the tires screeching in protest, as they targeted the small gap in the hospital's barricaded outer gates.
They shot through the gap, completely out of control, and crashed hard into a pile of old, dry sandbags in the hospital’s courtyard. The scooter flipped onto its side, throwing them both into the dust.
Behind them, the heavy, iron-reinforced gates of the hospital courtyard, triggered by their impact, creaked loudly and slammed shut with a heavy, metallic groan, locking out the remaining raiders who screeched to a halt outside.
Jevan lay in the dirt, covered in soot, steam, and sand. The scooter’s engine let out one final, pathetic hiss of death, and then was silent.
"Well," Jevan muttered to the sky. "We made it."

Chapter 6: A Very Tactical DisguiseThe lingering warmth of Svara’s fingers was still tingled on Jevan’s palm when Elangga ruined the moment by shoving a dusty burlap sack into his chest."Put this on," Elangga whispered, his voice vibrating with a grave, tactical solemnity. "Our lives depend on it."Jevan stared at the rough, scratchy fabric in his hands. It was a giant, oversized potato sack, dyed a highly questionable shade of swamp-green, with dozens of rusted plastic forks pushed through the weave so they jutted out like jagged teeth. On top of the head-hole, Elangga had wired a bright yellow, highly synthetic duster flower."Elangga," Jevan said, his voice flat. "What is this?""It is the pinnacle of desert camouflage," Elangga said, proudly gesturing to his own sack, which he had already pulled over his tactical vest. The plastic forks crinkled against his armor as he puffed out his chest. "We are going to dress as giant saguaro cacti. We will slowly shuffle down the dune in a
Chapter 5: The Sneak Apprentice
The blinding, white-hot magnesium glare of the homemade flashbomb burned straight through Jevan’s closed eyelids. He let out a strangled yelp, his vision instantly dissolving into a chaotic sea of dancing purple spots and screaming static. But years of dodging snapping drive-belts and exploding steam lines had trained his body to react before his brain could catch up. Hearing the frantic, heavy rustle of a stiff canvas trench coat rushing toward the exit, Jevan threw himself forward in a blind, desperate tackle."I got her!" he roared, his hands locking onto a bundle of crackling plastic and thick fabric. They collided with a heavy, air-leaving oof. The impact sent them both skidding across the dusty concrete floor, initiating a spectacular, highly wet catastrophe. Dozens of plastic intravenous saline bags, shoved hastily into the thief’s oversized pockets, surrendered to the pressure. They burst one after another in a rapid-fire chorus of wet pops, spraying cold, sterile saltwater
Chapter 4: The Mad Scrientis in Room 204
The silence in the dim, dusty lobby of the hospital was so thick you could have sliced it with a rusted hacksaw. Dr. Tisya Renjani stood with her feet planted wide, her aluminum clipboard resting against her hip, looking like a disappointed general who had just discovered her elite troops had traded their rifles for kazoo-horns. "Well?" Tisya repeated, her eyes narrowing as they flicked from Elangga’s pristine floral shirt to the flattened cardboard boxes littered around his boots. "I’m waiting."Elangga cleared his throat, snapping to attention and executing a crisp, albeit incredibly dusty, military salute. "Doctor. I was simply executing a high-velocity, low-impact perimeter defense. The cardboard, as I’m sure a medical professional of your caliber can appreciate, was a structural upgrade to absorb the kinetic energy of my tactical descent.""You fell off a balcony because you tried to use a ten-year-old rubber hose as a zipline," Jevan said, sitting up on the concrete floor and r
Chapter 3: Tactical Tripping
Jevan lay in the dirt, covered in soot, steam, and sand. The scooter’s engine let out one final, pathetic hiss of death, and then was silent. "Well," Jevan muttered to the sky, his voice raspy and thin. "We made it.""Define 'made it,'" Svara said, her voice dripping with dry, unadulterated venom. She was already on her feet, furiously brushing gray dust and bits of dried horseweed off her cargo pants. "Because if 'made it' means crashing a motorized trash can into a pile of dirt, ruining my only good pair of pants, and trapping us in a courtyard with a locked gate, then yes, Jevan. We absolutely nailed it."Jevan groaned, slowly rolling onto his side. Every muscle in his body felt like it had been run over by a steamroller, and then put through a blender. He pushed himself up onto his elbows, spitting out a mouthful of gritty sand. "Look, the gates are locked. Those raiders outside can’t get to us. Technically, this is a strategic victory.""Oh, really?" Svara pointed a finger towar

Chapter 1. The Wrench and the Bubblegum
"If you leak one more drop of rusty gray water on my boots, I swear to God I will personally melt you down into a frying pan," Jevan hissed, wiping a mixture of grease and stinging sweat from his eyes. The copper pipe of Sector 4’s primary filtration pump didn't care about his empty threats. It gave a wet, mocking splat, sending a jet of lukewarm, metallic-tasting water directly into his left cheek. "Unbelievable," Jevan muttered, spitting out a stray droplet that had landed on his lip. His throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper, and his tongue was practically glued to the roof of his mouth. He reached into his pocket, fingers brushing past loose screws and copper wire, until he found what he was looking for: a heavily crushed, slightly lint-covered piece of synthetic mint bubblegum. He popped it into his mouth and chewed furiously. It was stale, hard as a pebble, and tasted vaguely like industrial detergent, but it was his only hope. As his jaw worked the gum into a sticky,
