Evan got to the dojo right at six.

Chen was already there, but he wasn’t alone.

A woman stood beside him mid-fifties, gray hair, eyes like she could cut through stone. She stared at Evan like she’d already heard everything about him.

“Evan,” Chen said, “this is my wife, Maria.”

That stopped Evan cold.

“Your wife?” He glanced from Chen to Maria.

“She knows about Daniel,” Chen said. “About what he told us.” He hesitated a second. “She wanted to meet you.”

Maria stepped forward, hand out. “Daniel

  • CHAPTER 28: THE CHOICE

Evan didn’t sleep at all.He sat at his desk the whole night, Daniel’s journal open in front of him. The words kept circling in his head.Don’t go. Not yet. Wait until after the Awakening. But if I don’t go, Victor will notice. He’ll make his move sooner. And Lily… she might get caught up in all of it.Evan closed the journal and just stared at the wall. Now what?Morning dragged itself in.He got up, got dressed, wandered downstairs.Lily was already at the kitchen table. Breakfast two plates. She looked up as he walked in.“You didn’t sleep.”“Yeah,” Evan said, “no.”She slid a plate his way. “Eat.”He sat and ate in silence. She watched him.“So what are you gonna do?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “About the meeting. About Victor. What’s your plan?”He put his fork down.“I honestly… I don’t know.”She reached out, grabbed his hand.“You don’t have to go.”“I know.”“But you want to.”He met her eyes.“I want this over. I want Victor stopped. I want you safe.” He hesitated. “But

  • CHAPTER 27: THE LISTENER

Evan showed up at Marcus’s garage right at seven.Adam was already there, sitting off to the side. Marcus focused on something at the workbench. Chen just waited in the corner.Everybody glanced up when Evan walked in.“You met him,” Adam said.“Yeah.”“Well?”Evan told them. Everything. Damien and the offer. The burner phone. Victor’s promise to save Lily.Adam listened without saying a word. When Evan finished, he just stared at the floor for a while.“He’s lying,” Adam finally said.“I know.”“But you’re not really sure, are you?”Evan just sat there, not answering.Marcus chimed in. “You’re considering it.”“I’m thinking about Lily. If there’s even a chance…”“There isn’t.” Adam’s voice sounded like stone. “Victor doesn’t save people. He uses them until they’re dry. Then he dumps them.”“You can’t be sure.”“I am,” Adam said, a little quieter. “I saw the old timeline. I watched him take over entire cities. Saw him kill anyone in his way. Saw him betray everyone who ever trusted hi

  • CHAPTER 26: THE UNCLE

Evan kept the meeting to himself. He didn't tell Adam, Marcus, or Lily.If he did, they'd try to stop him. Or worse, they’d follow. Damien would spot them for sure, and then he’d vanish, like smoke. That was Evan’s only shot. He wasn’t about to waste it.So he waited for midnight.Jacket on. Knife, pistol, both tucked away. Out the door, no words, no hesitation. The park was deserted. Old, forgotten. A handful of benches, a swing set with rusting chains, a single streetlight fighting to stay alive.Evan waited under the swings, counting each breathFootsteps, finally.A man appeared, sharp features, dark hair, a scar tracing his jaw. Damien Cross. He looked too much like Evan’s dad: those same eyes, that same tired way of moving."Evan," he said. "You look just like him."Evan didn’t reply."Your father. My brother. He was a good man." Damien stopped a little way off, letting the words linger between them. "He’d be proud of you."You don’t know me," Evan said."I know more than you th

  • CHAPTER 25: THE INFORMAT

Evan got to Marcus's garage right at seven. Adam was already there, fiddling with something. Marcus hung out by the workbench, and Chen was in the corner with his arms folded."You brought Chen?" Evan asked.Adam shrugged. "He knows stuff. We need all the help we can get."Evan nodded and took a seat."So, what's the plan?"Adam rolled out a map across the workbench. "The academy sits here, downtown big place. Packed with security and students." He tapped it. "Victor Kane’s got at least three people inside. Maybe more.""Who are they?""Don’t know yet. But I’m seeing signs that one has been lurking at the academy for weeks. Strong presence. Feels… different." Adam glanced around. "I don’t think it’s a vessel. It’s another reborn."That hit Evan like a punch to the gut."Another one?""Yeah. And whoever it is, they’re working with Victor."Marcus leaned closer. "How do you know?""I saw them together two nights ago. Warehouse on Fifth. Same place you met Victor," Adam said, glancing at

The harvest. And finally, he told her about the night she killed him.Lily didn’t say a word. Didn’t cry. She just listened. When he finished, she just sat there, silent for a long time.“So I killed you,” she said.“It wasn’t you. It was the Administrator. It took over.”“But I did it. With my own hands. My own voice.” Her eyes found his. “I killed you.”Evan reached out and took her hand.“It wasn’t your fault.”“It was my body,” she whispered.“It still wasn’t you.” He squeezed her hand. “You fought it. Right at the end. You tried to save me. You couldn’t. But you tried.”She went quiet again.“I don’t remember any of that.”“I know.”“I don’t remember killing you. I don’t remember the apocalypse. The vessels.” Her pause was heavy. “And he talked about you. That it would decide everything.”Evan frowned
