Aldric unclasped his gauntlet. Eryx hit the cold, jagged stone like a sack of wet grain, his lungs gasping violently for air as the heavy boots receded into the morning fog.

For several seconds, Eryx could do nothing but lie there.

His throat felt like it had been crushed from the inside. Every attempt to draw air into his lungs came with a burning pain that traveled straight down his chest. The fog around him drifted lazily across the ground, almost peaceful compared to the violence that had j

The noon sun beat down on the central courtyard, turning the wide flagstones into a pale, blinding furnace.Eryx was dragged down the high stone steps by two guards, the iron chains wrapping around his legs clanking with every uneven step he took. They hadn't allowed him to wash off the dirt from the sub-level cell, nor had they given him a tunic. He wore a rough, threadbare rag tied at his waist, his bare chest bruised, pale, and covered in dried soot.Around the perimeter of the courtyard, hundreds of recruits stood jammed behind the heavy wooden barricades."Look at him!" a noble recruit yelled from the front row, cupping his hands around his mouth. "The little stray thought he was special! Thought he could keep a monster under our noses!"A stone flew from the crowd, clipping Eryx across the side of his jaw. Blood welled up instantly, trickling down his neck, but he didn't flinch or even lift his chin."Murderer!" a girl shouted, throwing a handful of coarse gravel that stung agai

Up in the upper stone ward, the academy’s chief physician wiped black grease from his gloved fingers, stepping back from Elder Vane’s cold corpse. Two elders stood over the body, their faces drawn tight under the flickering torches."Cause of death isn't just the crushed throat," the physician muttered, pointing a thin brass rod at the gray, sunken skin around Vane's ribs. "Look here. His spirit sea wasn't just crushed. His core was clean ripped out—extracted and drained down to the marrow. There isn't a drop of residual energy left in him."The physician's eyes remained fixed on the body for another moment, as though he expected some hidden trace to reveal itself. Nothing did. Only the faint smell of iron and burned incense lingered in the chamber.Elder Marcus stared at the hollow, dried-out chest cavity, a chill running down his neck. "Absorbed? A human core doesn't just vanish. That requires taboo arts.""Black magic," the physician whispered. "Or an abyssal beast."×××Down in th

The courtyard was a mess of shouting guards, coughing recruits, and ash floating down like dirty black snow.Up on the ruined roof, three senior officers were picking through the smashed slate and broken timber with lanterns. They weren't looking at the armory fire anymore…that was just spirit-oil and poor luck but this was different."It wasn't a structural collapse," one of the officers called down, his boots crunching on stone. "The rafters were snapped inward. Something hit this building from the sky with real weight."A small crowd of lower-block recruits was gathered near the stone fountain, shivering in their tunics."I saw it," a boy from the third floor muttered, his voice shaking. "It came out of the smoke from the armory. It had massive wings, black ones. It looked like a dragon.""Shut your mouth," a guard snapped, shoving the boy back into line. "There are no wild dragons inside the inner grid.""I saw it too!" another recruit chimed in, leaning over his friend's shoulder

The iron lantern swung in the guard’s left hand as long, jittery shadows slid down the damp corridor walls.Guard Vane stopped outside Room 14, his boots clicking against the stone. His eyes went straight to the upper wall and to the high transom window was a narrow slot near the ceiling. It was dead black, the iron grate that was supposed to cover it hung loose, caught on a single rusted hinge. As Vane lifted his torch a harsh beam of white spirit-light cut through the gap.The light swept the dark room. Two noble recruits snored on cots jammed tight against the door. Further back, on a third cot, a figure lay still under a coarse wool blanket pulled up to his chin.Vane’s eyes narrowed because though it looked quiet… the air smelled wrong. The cold night’s wind was leaking into the hall through that broken grate."Something isn't right," Vane thought as his hand dropped to the iron baton at his belt. "A low-tier recruit with a damaged core doesn't sleep through a broken transom in t

A deep, cold vibration hummed against the base of Eryx’s skull."Vessel. Wake up. It is time."Drogo’s voice cut through the dark fog of sleep like a blade. Eryx’s eyes opened in the pitch-black room as he stayed still, letting his senses spread through the damp air of the lower quarters. The uneven breathing of his two noble roommates came from the far corner. Outside, the night was quiet. The second watch had passed.Eryx sat up slowly as the dark strip stayed wrapped tight around his right palm. He swung his legs off the cot and stood. His boots made no sound on the rough floorboards. He took a step toward the doorway, then stopped. Both roommates were sprawled across the narrow entry. Their cots had been dragged together, blocking the path, as their bodies stretched straight across the floorboards in front of the latch. A deliberate wall of meat and oak.Eryx’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t waste breath asking why.He stepped carefully over the first boy’s tangled legs. He planted his

Eryx didn't know about the shadow council in the elder's upper quarters. But he felt the academy change anyway. Like the weather shifting before a storm.Slipping out of the lower block at night wasn't possible anymore. Heavy iron lanterns hung every ten paces down the dorm corridors. Senior guards checked spirit badges at three different checkpoints before midnight. If he tried to move in the dark, they'd catch him before he hit the perimeter wall.So Eryx changed his timing. He woke before the first bell. Stepped out into cold morning air while the sun was barely breaking over the eastern horizon. In his standard recruit tunic he looked like any other low-tier student heading for dawn conditioning.Deep in the eastern pine forest, far from the main training yards, Eryx dropped into a low stance on the dew-wet grass.A faint dark mist slid down his right arm and pooled on the dirt. Then it rose into the shape of Drogo. Wolf-sized. Scaled. The phantom dragon shook his head. His twin b
