I should have known better.

The signs were always there. The late replies, the dismissive attitude, the way Selena treated me like a convenience rather than a boyfriend. But love makes you blind. It makes you do stupid things even when the signs are glaring.

And I was the biggest fool of them all.

I was not that of a fool but I wanted to believe she was busy and couldn't be there for me. But my heart was big enough for the both of us. At least that was what I thought until it dawned on me.

It was Friday night, and the campus was alive with energy. The annual frat party at Delta House was the highlight of the semester, and somehow, against all odds, I had managed to get an invite. Not because

I was popular or part of the inner circle—far from it. I was there because of Selena. My girlfriend. Or at least, that’s what I thought.

I spent the whole afternoon helping her get ready. I ran errands, picked up the dress she wanted, even delivered her shoes from her dorm when she forgot them. Anything to make her happy. Because that’s what you do when you love someone, right? You make sacrifices.

But love isn’t supposed to feel like servitude.

I walked into the party with a nervous kind of excitement, scanning the room for her. The music thumped against my chest, neon lights flickered over a sea of dancing bodies, and the smell of alcohol and sweat clung to the air. I spotted her almost immediately.

And that was the moment my world cracked apart.

Selena was draped over Derek Carter, the campus heartthrob, the guy who had everything—money, power, and a body sculpted like a Greek god.

She wasn’t just standing close to him. She was in his arms, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his chest, laughing at something he whispered in her ear.

I told myself there had to be a mistake. Maybe she had too much to drink. Maybe she was just talking. But then she kissed him.

Right there. In front of everyone.

The room spun. My hands went numb. Every sound became distant, like I was submerged underwater, drowning in betrayal. My feet moved on their own, pushing through the crowd until I stood a few feet away from them.

“Selena?” My voice barely came out.

She turned to me slowly, like I was an annoyance rather than her boyfriend. Her expression shifted from mild surprise to outright amusement. Derek smirked, his arm still snug around her waist.

“Oh. Hey, Jason.” She took a sip of her drink, acting like I hadn’t just caught her cheating.

But was she really cheating on me?

I didn't have time to even think about that because she was right in front of me flaunting her mini skirt which was revealing almost her panties and she was acting all cheaply right in front of me.

My stomach twisted. “What… what the hell is this?”

Selena sighed, exasperated, like I was a child throwing a tantrum. “God, Jason. Don’t be so dramatic.”

“Dramatic?” My voice rose. “You’re making out with another guy! In front of everyone! And you’re acting like it’s nothing?”

Derek chuckled, and a few people around us started whispering. I could feel their eyes, their pity. Their amusement.

Selena rolled her eyes. “Look, I was going to tell you eventually, but since you just had to make a scene, let’s get it over with.” She straightened, her voice growing louder, more confident. “Jason, we’re done. I’m not going to pretend anymore. This… whatever we had? It’s over.”

A cold pit formed in my stomach. “Selena, I—”

“You’re embarrassing,” she interrupted, her words slicing through me like knives. “Do you even realize how pathetic you are? Running around, doing all my errands, carrying my books, acting like my personal butler. It was fun at first, you know? Having a guy worship the ground I walk on. But then it just got… desperate.”

The people around us snickered.

I felt sick.

“I loved you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I did everything for you.”

She scoffed. “Yeah, and that’s the problem. You think love is about being my servant? Newsflash, Jason: love isn’t begging for scraps. I need a real man, someone who can actually offer me something.” She turned to Derek, her hands sliding over his chest. “Not some broke loser who thinks being ‘nice’ is enough.”

Derek grinned. “Hate to break it to you, buddy, but she was never really yours. She just liked the attention.”

The final blow landed. My entire body felt like it had been gutted. Every sacrifice, every moment I spent thinking I mattered to her—it was all a joke to them.

People started murmuring, some laughing, others just watching the wreckage unfold. I clenched my fists, every fiber of my being screaming at me to fight back, to say something, to do something.

But what could I say? That I had been used? That I had given my heart to someone who never even wanted it? The truth was a bitter pill, and it choked me as I stood there, humiliated.

“Now, be a good little boy and run along,” Selena added, her tone dripping with mock sympathy. “I have better things to do than babysit you.”

Derek laughed, throwing an arm around her. “That’s right, pal. Scram. You’re ruining the vibe.”

I wanted to scream. To punch him. To make them feel even a fraction of the pain crushing me from the inside. But I didn’t. I couldn’t. Because deep down, I knew that nothing I did would change the fact that Selena had never loved me.

So I turned around. I walked away, my legs shaky, my vision blurred. I didn’t stop until I was out of the hallroom, out of the noise, out of the spotlight of my own humiliation.

Love?Looking at her everyday, staring into her face was making me forget I have ever fallen in love before. Sandra was everything that I had hoped for. She was compassionate, kind, caring and loving and she does things without me asking for it. Mrs Tracy noticed the closeness between us and I am sure she is happy with it. I was slightly distracted from my phone and was mainly concentrating on my studies. The nightmare was consistent. I barely sleep at night. The system still haunts me. As the thunder crackled, My eyes snapped open only to see Sandra seated right in front of me. " What are you doing?" I asked her, trying to get to the switch. Sandra's gaze locked on mine as the light illuminated the darkness casting a gentle glow inside the room. " I came to wake you up for super but you were.." She paused " I was what?" I said immediately grabbing a towel to clean my sweaty face. " You were mumbling some words in your dream. And also you called Thomas's name." Sandra added "

I stayed by the sink for a long time, gripping its edge, my chest rising and falling like I’d just escaped something—only I hadn’t. Nothing was chasing me. Nothing was here. The hallway outside my room was silent, save for the ticking clock in the living room and the distant hum of the fridge. Still, I felt it. That presence. Like someone—or something—was watching me from behind the mirror. “Snap out of it,” I muttered to myself, running a towel over my face. I tried to steady my breathing and tried to convince myself that it was just my subconscious acting up. After all, I had been involved in more death and chaos than any regular teenager should have been. Maybe this was trauma. Or PTSD. Or maybe… the system wasn't done with me.No. I shook the thought from my head violently. It was done. The app was gone. The missions had stopped. My account wasn’t refilling. No new mission. No late-night texts telling me someone needed to die before dawn or else I’d be the one gone. I was

Maybe it was for the best. If I was not inputted into the system anymore, then maybe I was let go. I still don't know what it meant for me, and it was nerve-wracking. I could feel a thousand eyes on me each time I turned around the school corridors. I don't need to be told who the gamers were anymore. I had seen enough of them back in my past to know who was who and who was now in the gaming system. Olivia. Zara. They still pretended I was invisible, like I didn't matter to them. And the likes of Zack and Elliot's brother were back to taunt me again. The life I thought I had left behind was slowly catching up to me yet again. It's been days, no weeks. No message from the system, no mission, and no upgrades. It was like I was let go each time I thought about it. I don't know if I should be thankful or sad. The fact remains that I don't need to look over my shoulders anymore. I was not scared of anyone coming for my head except Elliott's brother, who still gives me the chills.

The sound came in faintly—like whispers on the edge of a dream. At first, I thought it was part of the nightmare: blood on my hands, voices screaming in reverse, a countdown that never hit zero. But when I jolted awake, the whispers stopped. I got out of my bed and looked at the time on the wall. It was dawn, barely morning. I grabbed my watch and strapped it to my wrist. I needed to go for a job to clear my head before I get ready for school. I walked out of my room and decided to check on Mrs Tracy. I pushed the door a little and I saw she was still fast asleep cuddled up in her bed. I walked in and kissed her on her head. " Morning mother." I spoke softly into her ears. " Morning son." Mrs Tracy spoke softly rolling on the bed before I walked out. A part of me wished I lived a normal life. A life without the system, a life where I don't have to look over my shoulders all the time. But I guess it was too late now. I need to keep playing until I win. If I win.

I stared into her eyes for what felt like forever.A promise? It sounded simple. Ordinary. But in my world, a promise could get someone killed. A promise could expose you to truths you weren’t ready for. A promise could trap you in a reality you no longer understood.“I…” The word hung in the air between us like smoke from a fire I wasn’t ready to put out. “I can’t promise that.”Her expression faltered. Just a flicker. But it was enough to feel like a slap. Mrs Tracy could barely believe what I just said. I was sure she would have given me a spank if I were her real child, but something in her eyes felt calm. Maybe she was being understanding about what I said, or maybe she had finally given up. There was a limit to everything a person can take. Maybe she had reached her limit this time around. “I’m sorry,” I added quickly, trying to soften the blow. “It’s not because I don’t trust you. It’s because—because the things I’m dealing with, the stuff that’s happening—it’s not normal,

If you ask me if my mother was blowing things out of proportion, then I would say no, actually. She has all the right to make sure I was fine and well looked after. After all, she was my mother. The thought of what was going to happen to me if I didn't go back to the same school scared the hell out of me. I didn't have friends, actually. In fact, I had more enemies. Enemies that were ready to bury me in seconds. But still I was having enough to last me a lifetime, or should I say through my school days.Maybe it was for the best, but all of this still felt like I was in a bad dream and I was going to wake up any moment from now. I looked at my mother, and I could still see her angered face.I let out a sigh when I was finally sure I was not dreaming."You are not going back there. If we are paying so much for the tuition fees and they are not ready to treat you right, then I say we change schools. My sister should be back anytime soon." Mrs. Tracy looked at me."Yes. The one I told y
