"And why do you care?" I snapped, my eyes burning with fury as I faced Derek. His own face twisted in anger.

"Did you just talk back at me?" he barked, and before I could react, his hand flew across my face. A sharp sting spread across my cheek, but I refused to flinch.

I wouldn't give him that satisfaction. Not yet.

The sales representative arrived, handing me my parcel. Selena caught a glimpse of the price tag and paled visibly. "Why are you surprised? Did you think you and your boyfriend were the only ones who could afford luxury?" I asked, watching the disbelief flicker in her eyes.

Derek chuckled darkly. "Says the errand boy for some cheap rich man in the city. I could buy ten of those without blinking."

I smirked. "We’ll see about that." Without another word, I turned and walked away. But my mind was already set.

Revenge.

Tracy’s eyes widened as she stared at the parcel before her. "Did you steal this?" she asked, worry evident in her voice. "Jason, I know you want to make up for the past, but you don’t have to go this far. We have each other’s backs, remember?" She offered a soft smile, trying to reassure me.

"I got this for you because I wanted to," I said, my lips curving into a grin. "You'll make me happy by wearing it."

Tracy’s brows knitted together. "Are you… rich? Is this some kind of test?" She glanced around, searching for hidden cameras.

A laugh erupted from my chest, drawing the attention of nearby customers. "No, Tracy. I come from a humble background, but you…" My voice softened. "You were there for me at my weakest. You're the mother I never had."

A hush fell over the shop. Whispers swirled around us.

"Is she his mother?"

"I thought her son died?"

"Then who is he?"

Tears welled in Tracy’s eyes as she hugged me, resting her head on my shoulder. I patted her back gently, but my mind was already racing ahead—to school, to what awaited me. My punishment.

But things are different now. With my newfound wealth, I could change everything.

[THE NEXT DAY]

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries stirred me awake. My eyes snapped open as the realization hit me—I was supposed to report to school by 8:00 AM.

I checked the clock. 7:30 AM.

Cursing under my breath, I jumped out of bed, rushed through my morning routine, and sprinted into the kitchen. Tracy was setting the table.

"You should have some coffee, Jason. I made it just how you like it."

I smiled but shook my head. "Thanks, Mum. But I have to go. I'm late."

The word slipped out before I could catch it.

Tracy froze, then smiled—a radiant, tearful smile that could brighten the entire café.

I stepped back, hesitated, then leaned in and kissed her cheek. "You'll always be my mother, Tracy. Thank you for everything."

She pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead in return.

Moments later, I was bolting down the street, flagging a cab, and soon, I was on my way.

---

The moment I stepped onto the school grounds, whispers filled the air.

"Isn’t he supposed to be here by 8:00 AM?"

"He’s late."

"I wonder what Mr. Harper will do to him."

"Probably kick his sorry ass out."

I ignored them. I had bigger things to worry about.

As I made my way to my locker to change, Derek appeared, blocking my path with a smug grin. "You know, I didn’t expect you to show up after what you pulled at the boutique. Guess you just confirmed you’re still broke."

I exhaled sharply, forcing my temper down. "Derek, I don’t have time for your games. I have business to take care of."

Derek smirked. "Ah, right. Your ‘business.’ Cleaning the entire school as punishment. But you seem to be missing someone."

My gaze snapped to his.

"What?"

"That wretched old woman," Derek sneered. "Why don’t you bring her along? She was dying to get you on Mr. Harper’s good side, when it’s me she should be bowing to."

Fury curled in my chest. My fists clenched involuntarily. I wanted to punch him. Hard. But I knew better. One wrong move, and I’d be expelled.

"Move," I said, voice tight with restraint.

Derek didn’t budge. Instead, he turned to Alex—a timid, bespectacled student passing by—and grabbed his collar. "You don’t mind if I borrow this, do you?" He yanked Alex’s water bottle away.

Alex glanced at me apologetically but said nothing.

Derek twisted off the cap and dumped the contents onto the floor. The liquid was deep red—God knows what he had in there.

"Get to work, dumbass. Make sure it’s spotless," he taunted, laughing.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Heat flooded my veins, but instead of reacting, I did something unexpected.

I removed my shirt.

Gasps echoed around me.

"What is he doing?"

"No way…"

"Is he really going to mop with his shirt?!"

Ignoring them all, I knelt and began scrubbing the floor with my shirt, dragging the fabric over the crimson stain. The noise around me grew louder as more students gathered.

"Jason is mopping the floor with his shirt!" Zee, the school gossip, shrieked.

By the time I finished, nearly every student was watching. The air was thick with tension.

I rose to my feet, my shirt now soaked and stained, and locked eyes with Derek.

"Why don’t we do this again?" I said coldly. "Name your price."

Derek scoffed. "What? You think you can pay for the damages?"

I didn’t blink.

Derek smirked. "Fine. Since you want to humiliate yourself further, I’ll help you out. Pay me twenty grand. Not that you have it."

Silence fell over the crowd.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a thick wad of cash. The whispers turned into stunned gasps.

I smirked. "Will that be cash or transfer?"

Love?Looking at her everyday, staring into her face was making me forget I have ever fallen in love before. Sandra was everything that I had hoped for. She was compassionate, kind, caring and loving and she does things without me asking for it. Mrs Tracy noticed the closeness between us and I am sure she is happy with it. I was slightly distracted from my phone and was mainly concentrating on my studies. The nightmare was consistent. I barely sleep at night. The system still haunts me. As the thunder crackled, My eyes snapped open only to see Sandra seated right in front of me. " What are you doing?" I asked her, trying to get to the switch. Sandra's gaze locked on mine as the light illuminated the darkness casting a gentle glow inside the room. " I came to wake you up for super but you were.." She paused " I was what?" I said immediately grabbing a towel to clean my sweaty face. " You were mumbling some words in your dream. And also you called Thomas's name." Sandra added "

I stayed by the sink for a long time, gripping its edge, my chest rising and falling like I’d just escaped something—only I hadn’t. Nothing was chasing me. Nothing was here. The hallway outside my room was silent, save for the ticking clock in the living room and the distant hum of the fridge. Still, I felt it. That presence. Like someone—or something—was watching me from behind the mirror. “Snap out of it,” I muttered to myself, running a towel over my face. I tried to steady my breathing and tried to convince myself that it was just my subconscious acting up. After all, I had been involved in more death and chaos than any regular teenager should have been. Maybe this was trauma. Or PTSD. Or maybe… the system wasn't done with me.No. I shook the thought from my head violently. It was done. The app was gone. The missions had stopped. My account wasn’t refilling. No new mission. No late-night texts telling me someone needed to die before dawn or else I’d be the one gone. I was

Maybe it was for the best. If I was not inputted into the system anymore, then maybe I was let go. I still don't know what it meant for me, and it was nerve-wracking. I could feel a thousand eyes on me each time I turned around the school corridors. I don't need to be told who the gamers were anymore. I had seen enough of them back in my past to know who was who and who was now in the gaming system. Olivia. Zara. They still pretended I was invisible, like I didn't matter to them. And the likes of Zack and Elliot's brother were back to taunt me again. The life I thought I had left behind was slowly catching up to me yet again. It's been days, no weeks. No message from the system, no mission, and no upgrades. It was like I was let go each time I thought about it. I don't know if I should be thankful or sad. The fact remains that I don't need to look over my shoulders anymore. I was not scared of anyone coming for my head except Elliott's brother, who still gives me the chills.

The sound came in faintly—like whispers on the edge of a dream. At first, I thought it was part of the nightmare: blood on my hands, voices screaming in reverse, a countdown that never hit zero. But when I jolted awake, the whispers stopped. I got out of my bed and looked at the time on the wall. It was dawn, barely morning. I grabbed my watch and strapped it to my wrist. I needed to go for a job to clear my head before I get ready for school. I walked out of my room and decided to check on Mrs Tracy. I pushed the door a little and I saw she was still fast asleep cuddled up in her bed. I walked in and kissed her on her head. " Morning mother." I spoke softly into her ears. " Morning son." Mrs Tracy spoke softly rolling on the bed before I walked out. A part of me wished I lived a normal life. A life without the system, a life where I don't have to look over my shoulders all the time. But I guess it was too late now. I need to keep playing until I win. If I win.

I stared into her eyes for what felt like forever.A promise? It sounded simple. Ordinary. But in my world, a promise could get someone killed. A promise could expose you to truths you weren’t ready for. A promise could trap you in a reality you no longer understood.“I…” The word hung in the air between us like smoke from a fire I wasn’t ready to put out. “I can’t promise that.”Her expression faltered. Just a flicker. But it was enough to feel like a slap. Mrs Tracy could barely believe what I just said. I was sure she would have given me a spank if I were her real child, but something in her eyes felt calm. Maybe she was being understanding about what I said, or maybe she had finally given up. There was a limit to everything a person can take. Maybe she had reached her limit this time around. “I’m sorry,” I added quickly, trying to soften the blow. “It’s not because I don’t trust you. It’s because—because the things I’m dealing with, the stuff that’s happening—it’s not normal,

If you ask me if my mother was blowing things out of proportion, then I would say no, actually. She has all the right to make sure I was fine and well looked after. After all, she was my mother. The thought of what was going to happen to me if I didn't go back to the same school scared the hell out of me. I didn't have friends, actually. In fact, I had more enemies. Enemies that were ready to bury me in seconds. But still I was having enough to last me a lifetime, or should I say through my school days.Maybe it was for the best, but all of this still felt like I was in a bad dream and I was going to wake up any moment from now. I looked at my mother, and I could still see her angered face.I let out a sigh when I was finally sure I was not dreaming."You are not going back there. If we are paying so much for the tuition fees and they are not ready to treat you right, then I say we change schools. My sister should be back anytime soon." Mrs. Tracy looked at me."Yes.
