Apart from the guilty look on his face, Dylan Rick looked as if he had seen a ghost. However, his denial game was quite strong.

Lut had to give that to him.

“I have a wife and kids.” He muttered, his facial expression trying to hide the lies that were buried beneath those words.

“A wife and kids didn't make you satisfied enough to see a young lady come here for a job offer and let her go without intending to wreck her life?”

Dylan Rick swallowed hard, then spoke, the veins popping out of his neck and his head even.

“I won't let you come into my office and lie against me just because I've decided to be silent about it, Mr Lutenant. I'm afraid that you have to leave. I've accommodated this enough, brother, have I not?”

When Sean spoke, he agreed with his brother and Lut didn't blame him, anyone would. Most times, family came first. But he also knew that if Sean had known about his brother doing this prior and still went ahead to defend him, then he was in the wrong.

“You've accommodated

“Please, Lut. I agree that he has done this before. And we've done nothing but try to cover it up for him. We've sent him to rehabilitation centres, and most times, he comes back a changed man. I never even expected this to happen again…” Lut glared at him in anger before interrupting him. “You knew all this about him and you still went ahead to let him handle the recruitment of workers? You are probably the reason he hasn't done time yet. It was always going to happen again, man. Your brother was nothing but a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode.” Lutenant gestured to Hubert. “Let's get out of here.” As soon as the door was opened, Dylan did the most unbelievable thing. He left his chair, ran straight to the departing Lutenant, and fell on his knees, his hands clutching his trousers tightly. The tears were free flowing now, he was doing nothing to hide his shamelessness. “Please, Lutenant, don't do th

At the station, the first thing Aurora noticed was the fact that the officers were very cooperative. They collected her story, took a written statement and got the phone as evidence. “Are you coming with us to see him get arrested, ma'am? Or you'll wait at the station for us?” Before she could even have a chance to reply, Lut had done that for her. His brows furrowed, his voice firm and confident. “Yes, we're coming with you. I'll be the one to drive her, so don't you worry. Natalie, you're coming along, right?” Natalie nodded, and Aurora found it hard not to smile. Not because she felt loved by the attention, the care and the support that was being shown to her by her best friend, but because she knew that she would probably be back in the house by this time doing absolutely nothing if it wasn't for the ruckus with Dylan Rick. Although all focus was on her, Aurora still thought that it was very important her best friend had a job

Natalie, who sat beside her, squeezed her hand with a smile, kissing it.“Everything will be fine, Rora.”Lut turned to her as the car moved out of the Rick apartment offices, his smile lighting up the car that seemed to be in a sunken state.“Let's get you a lawyer, Aurora. You're not only going to win this case, you're going to raise some dust that has been going on in the business world for some time now.”Aurora was pleased, and at the same time, she was not.All she had ever wanted was to further her career, make enough dough to retire, fall in love, and live a fulfilled life. Those plans never included getting worked up in a case with a man who had almost harassed her.Was she ready for the attention and the disturbance that was going to come with the case? She bent her head worriedly, wanting nothing more than her bed and the softness of the rug in her sitting room beneath her feet.*At the office of Zachary, the man who represented the Chain Chain consortium in legal matters,

With his phone buzzing continuously in his pocket, Lutenant James was slowly coming to the realization that he was going to have to face his fears sooner or later. As soon as the car came to a halt next to Aurora's house, he turned to her, smiling sadly. He understood what a terrible day it had been for her, and if it was within his power, he would've changed things. But it was already too late.It had happened, and there was no changing that now. The only way to prevent such things was making sure that justice was upheld, which he was willing to do, no matter the cost.“You'll be okay, right?”“Yes, I'll be fine.”She nodded, her hands on the door as she prepared to leave the car. He could see how hard she was trying to be strong, how difficult it was for her to even try to think straight. At that moment, he swore that no matter what, Dylan Rick was going to get the rod of justice as long as he had a responsibility and a role to play in Aurora's case as her boss, even if it was just

He heard his father's sigh over the phone, and at that moment, he wondered if everybody was against him going to the police outrightly. “You did good, son. You did well. I've heard about Dylan Rick, but seeing it happen to someone I've seen in my company is just ridiculous. Have you informed director Edward?” That was where Lut knew he had made a huge mistake. He had taken everything upon himself, handling the case without even telling his superiors. They had a right to know. But to him, it wasn't his fault. It had happened out of the blue, and he knew that if he hadn't acted as quickly as he did, Dylan Rick would probably be in his home, eating with his supposed wife and kids. “No,dad. It happened all of a sudden, most of the time, I didn't even know what I was doing. I'm sorry.” His father's reply was reassuring. “No, son, don't apologize. You did so well. You represented the company just as I would've wished it

“Come on, Aurora, drop the scissors. I'm here to talk. I wanted to see how Natalie was doing, and that's all. Please, can I talk to her? I came here hoping to see her, and now that I've done so, I can't go without talking to her.” Aurora wasn't having it. It wasn't because she had had a shitty day, that wasn't all. It was because she knew that Natalie wasn't strong enough to handle the same man who had put her in the hospital. “Please leave, Carl. Don't make me calm the cops, because trust me, I wouldn't hesitate to make them ship your sorry ass to the station.” She had never seen a man so persistent even when he knew the circumstances weren't favourable. And from the look on her best friend's face, she knew it was only a matter of time before she accepted his weak apology and allowed him to come in. She was there to prevent that and make sure it didn't happen. “Come on, all I want to do is talk.” Aurora brandishe

  • The legacy of the supreme ruler   Toxic loyalty

In police custody, Dylan Rick looked like the worst version of himself. A tired face, bags under his eyes and a complexion that stated how badly he had slept. He didn't smile when he saw the two men from the Chain Chain consortium, and Lut smiled regardless. It was the irony of it all that amused him, the fact that a few days ago, Dylan Rick would've jumped at the opportunity to shake his hand and say a few words of pleasantries. He wondered if that would ever happen again. He highly doubted it.Looking at director Edward, he found himself wondering what the visit was about. To him, Dylan Rick was where he belonged, in a place for sick people, and after the case, he was going to be transferred to what he would describe as the permanent site.“Good morning Dylan. Slept well?”Dylan's stare was filled with venom and an irritation that spoke volumes.“Do I look as though I slept well, Edward?”From the way Dylan replied, Lut could instantly tell that the two men knew each other prior. “Thank you everyone for coming once again. You've made something as common as a housewarming party a memorable one for me. I won't forget this, ever.”Aurora watched the entire mini speech with a special kind of warmth in her heart. She had never seen Natalie so happy.“One, two, three!”The crowd counted with the couple as the knife came down. There was scattered clapping, and then it was then readjusted into a beautiful round of applause.Grabbing a flute from an attendant who was walking by, Carl raised the flute.“Everyone, grab a glass please.”“Aurora? Can you help us make a toast?”Aurora had not seen that coming. Naturally shy, she raised an eyebrow and felt her skin burn under the gaze of the entirety of everyone who was in the room. However, she made her way to the front of the crowd, then raised her flute.“To a life of happiness, endless celebrations and every good thing in the world. To Natalie and Carl!”“To Natalie and Carl!”There were clinks as flute brushed flute. Sh

I will always love you.”Natalie burst into tears on seeing the card, and immediately fell into his arms. The crowd burst into a series of cooing, and Aurora stole a flute of champagne from an attendant’s tray, chugging it down and satisfying her thirst.“When…when did you do all of this, Carl? How did you plan this?” She looked at the crowd and the decorations, her hand scratching the back of her neck in confusion.“I wouldn't have done it without the help of your best friend here, Aurora. • The ultimate welcome

“Whatever. I'm dirty and sweaty already. How about I just sit in the dining room and you serve me, alright? I'll take my bath later.” Natalie grinned, leaving her in the sitting room. “You know, sometimes I wonder what you would've done without me. Just look at you, tired as hell, coming home to a beautiful meal you would've paid for at a restaurant. You owe me big time.” Aurora groaned audibly. “Can you just cut the boasting part and forward to the part where I eat and say thanks? You can boast after that, okay?” Natalie's laughter was loud. Aurora dropped her hand bag in the sitting room, snatching her phone. In the dining room, she texted Carl immediately, urging him to call Natalie in a few minutes. She nearly let the phone fall from her hands when she saw her best friend enter with a tray of the food. It was one of her favourites. Lamb chops, biscuits and an apple pie next to it. There was a salad w

  • The squad

Boss and personal assistant left the office building, walking stride by stride. Aurora, her phone in her hand, was trying to reach Carl. He was the one who had done the arrangements, and she would've helped out if she didn't have to go down to the Fredrickson's company and help Lutenant get the contract he was gushing over so much. She waited next to her old model Benz, waiting for Carl to pick up. When he didn't answer after the first ring, she turned to Lut, who was waiting for her and shrugged. “He hasn't picked?” “Yes. Makes me wonder what is wrong with him. Who makes plans and doesn't keep to his own part of the deal? If he knows how tired I am, he'll pick up.” Lut smiled. “Call him again.” His voice was calm, the exact opposite of what hers was. Nodding, she did just as he had requested. And to her shock, Carl picked up on the first ring. “Aurora!” He called her name as if he was out of breath.

  • Sealing the deal

The executive meeting hadn't gone well, or maybe someone had brought an offer larger than the amount he had proposed. He didn't know which one it was yet. “The executive meeting didn't end too well. The highest bidder plays a huge role, Lut. I'm afraid we chose someone else.” Lutenant smiled. He looked out of the window, forgetting what he had planned to say for an instant if things didn't go his way. “Lut? Are you still there?” “Yes sir. It's alright, Mr Fredrickson. I understand you perfectly. There are other companies in the industry. We'll have to look into it.” He glanced at his father, who raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the fact that he had heard his son's answer and knew that the deal was lost. “Come on, Lut, I'm kidding! Did you even believe that I'll sell to someone else? You've been the highest bidder so far. The rest have all come in under hundred. And even if you weren't, I would've still sold to you.

  • Family friction

When Richard ended the call, his hands were trembling slightly and he felt lightheaded. When had Mr Johnson entered the room? Had he been listening to the entirety of his conversation with Hal? He wanted the earth to open up and swallow him. “Having problems at work?” He nodded, not knowing what else to say. “Yes, something like that.” Mr Johnson stood up, going to the window. He looked out of it, smiling at nothing in particular. When he turned to look at Richard, Richard noticed how furrowed his eyebrows were, and how he didn't even smile one bit, even though he had been smiling earlier. The smile had seemed to disappear into thin air. Something was wrong. “What kind of problems are you having at work, son? Are you aware that you're marrying my daughter, the only child I've ever had? Do you know that, Richard?” Richard swallowed hard. He wasn't scared of Mr Johnson, no, that was far from it.

  • Guilt by association

“Hundred million, Mr Fredrickson. I can't go higher.” Mr Fredrickson looked at members of his executive team. They all exchanged knowing glances which Lut knew he didn't understand. But he kept calm, watching the entire proceedings with his hand holding his flute. “Why don't we both sleep over it, Lut? My team and I will take your offer into consideration. Before anything, I want you to know that I've thought about leaving this company in good hands. And there are no other guaranteed good hands in this city apart from yours.” Lutenant nodded with a smile. “I understand you perfectly, Mr Fredrickson. I do.” “Now, there are still offers coming in, and we want to sell to the highest bidder, I'm afraid. At the same time, I want my legacy to live on even if this place doesn't belong to me anymore. You're the only one who can assure that.” “Oh come on, Mr Fredrickson, you flatter us way too much.” Mr Frederickson raised

  • The takeover bid

“I hope you enjoyed your meal, Lutenant.” Lut nodded. At that point, he couldn't tell which kitchen was better. The consortium kitchen made good meals, but he had to admit that he had tasted one of the best pasta drenched in sauce he had ever eaten in his entire life. It was insanely good. “I did, Mr Fredrickson. I'll need a few days to decide if your kitchen is better than ours, though. But I have to admit, that pasta was amazing.” They were looking at the buildings, and Frederickson was pointing out the important parts that they needed to know. Aurora, walking next to him, held a notebook and a camera in her hand. She was taking pictures and writing at the same time. “How about you, Aurora? How was the food?” “I'm planning to ask the cooks to give me their recipe after this. That's to show you how good it was.” “Oh, good to hear. Lut, you've got a good one on your hands. Any woman who loves cooking is

Truly, Mr Fredrickson and his team were waiting for them in the parking lot. Aurora had done a lot of research, and because of that, she knew how he looked. But up close, he looked shorter, even, and his smile was warm. His eyes twinkled in happiness, as if he was overjoyed that his company was being sold. “Mr Lutenant! I've been expecting you.” The two men shook hands, while Aurora watched. They were basically gauging each other through the handshake, but Aurora was comfortable with it. She knew her boss could handle it. “And who is this behind you?” “That is Aurora Spencer, my personal assistant and the woman in charge of most of my reformation success in most companies. She's very good, I tell you.” “Well, let's see how good she's going to do here. Welcome, Aurora. Lutenant, this is my team. The executives in charge of running this place. It hasn't been easy, but they've done a good job. You have to acknowledge them.”
