By seven o'clock, Ariel was giddy with excitement. She couldn't wait for Richard to come back. She stared at the dining room and the design she had done, making sure that everything was in place.

By the time she heard the roar of her father's car in the garage, her mother had finished her quick shower and was in a midnight gown that complimented her skin and her cheek bones.

Forty years in marriage and her parents were still going at it. She wanted that type of marriage for herself. She wanted her marriage with Richard to be filled with takes of love and how they had met to tell their unborn children.

That was why she had agreed to do the design and decorations in the first place. It made her feel closer to her parents than she already was, and at a point, it was as though she was doing it for herself.

It was only a matter of time.

Her mother stared at her in the darkness, her white teeth showing despite the fact that all the lights in the room had gone off.

“How do I look?”

Aurora packed up her things immediately after work, tiredly trying to tuck her hair in.She had managed to finish going through the good applications and was going to further it directly to the head of the personnel department, which was Mr Darwin. As she lifted her bag onto her shoulder, Lutenant came out of his office.“Ready to go already?”She smiled tiredly, happy to see him. She had to admit, she was tired and needed to sleep, but seeing him made her less tired, sometimes, she couldn't explain the kind of things he did to her.“Yes, I am. I don't know if Natalie will be going back to Carl's place because apparently, he wants to get a place for them both and has started to talk about marriage.”Lut's laughter was muffled and at the same time, loud.“Oh come on, don't tell me that Natalie keeps falling for his tricks every time.”She shrugged, not knowing how to even start.“I've talked about it most of the time with her, but her mind is hell bent on doing what she wants, and I ca

“Good morning sir. I…I never expected you here. I thought everyone was asleep, that was why I came outside to make the call.”Mr Johnson's smile was huge.“Oh, forget it. I understand you totally. As a teenager back then, I also loved to smoke in solitude. It hits harder, you know.”That wasn't Richard's problem. He was scared. He understood how his call had sounded, and he was wondering if Mr Johnson had overheard him while he had been talking. If the older man had done so, he did a good job of not showing it.“Yes sir.”“So, who were you talking to? Someone else apart from Ariel in the line of women you'd like to marry, huh? Anything that I should know about?”Richard shook his head fiercely.“I love Ariel and would never do anything to hurt her, sir.”Mr Johnson nodded, then smiled.“I understand you perfectly. However, you should know that we are men and we can't change that. We are bound to have urges. We will always think like men, no matter what. That's how it is. You cannot ch

When Lutenant James got home, he was shocked. There was loud, booming bass music coming from his backyard, and there were about five good looking cars in his garage. Where had they all come from?Just as he got down from his car, Terry was beside him in an instant, smiling as he reached for the briefcase in his hand. Surrendering it because he knew that his personal assistant at home wasn't going to stop until he made him comfortable, he cleared his throat, adjusting his tie and freeing up his neck.“What is happening? Why is there strange music coming from my backyard?”Terry's facial expression and his answer already showed that he was in disagreement with the party.“It's your sister, sir. She wanted to have a party with her friends from school despite the fact that I told her that you might not be happy about it. She said she had a right to do whatever she wanted in her brother's house. I tried to tell her how this might affect you, sir…”Lutenant shook his head because he knew th

The next morning, Richard drove Mr Johnson's Ford truck into the school premises, and parked directly in the parking lot opposite Douglas’s apartment. He knocked, and in seconds the door opened, revealing his friend and acquaintance who also served as a co-worker that had been waiting for him since he made the call that he was going to be there that morning.“What took you so long?”Richard arched an eyebrow in question.“Long? I literally called minutes ago, bro. You should even be thankful that I'm on time. I know people that would've done worse. People that never keep to time.”Knowing that the dig was referring to him, Douglas grinned, then opened the door. The full crew was there.Hal and Benny sat in a corner, cigarettes in between their fingers as they billowed smoke into the air through the open window.Hal stood up, clutching his hand and shaking him firmly.“It's been quite a while. Are you busy with marriage and family arrangements?”Richard's reply was to shake his head, t

“You don't have to complain,” Natalie chipped in mockingly, “I know a hungry woman is an angry one. How was your night?”Aurora's first reply was bad enough but badder now that I've even seen your face, but she clamped down on her tongue, preferring instead to give him an answer that lacked enthusiasm. “Good morning Carl. It was okay.”She left the couple in the kitchen, headed for the bathroom. There, she slipped underneath the shower, allowing the cold water to wash her clean. It helped with her headache too because a moment later, she felt okay, and the fever was coming down gradually. When she came out of the bathroom, she was greeted with the beautiful aroma of fried eggs, toasted bread and fried bacon. She knew that aroma anywhere she perceived it.Natalie's cooking appealed to her in a way that no

When he came out of the house in a shirt and black trousers that went down all the way to his ankles, he found Claudia next to his Porsche, waiting for him, fiddling with her phone to pass time. He managed to smile at her, his mind on the consortium. He was supposed to be at work, but because he was not immune to his sister and her best friend's shenanigans, he had to do what she wanted, even if it meant that he had to inconvenience himself. He opened the driver's door, then did the same to the passenger door, all the while the smile never leaving his face. In the car, he gunned the engine, then glanced at Claudia as she tried to slip on her seat belt. He found himself wondering if she wasn't wearing the same gown she had worn the previous night. Where other women would've looked uncomfortable, she looked amazing, even though he felt that the gown was supposed to make her look even worse. Instead, it was the exact opposite. “Well, I thought I had seen the best of you this morning

I'm sorry if I'm scaring you off with my kisses.” He shook his head, wishing she would leave the car already. “Thank you for the ride, Lut. I hope to see you around soon.” With those words, she closed the door, waved and walked to the direction of the apartment buildings. Shaking his head, Lut sighed tiredly. How was she able to interest him, get him excited and get him drained all at once? Shaking his head, he gunned his engine again as his eyes glanced at the time on his dashboard. He had to be at work before Aurora would start freaking out. * Richard waited at the building which had been chosen a

“Why would he treat you in that manner? Come on, you have other things to worry about. Your approaching court case tomorrow, your safety. There are a thousand and one things you should prioritize.”She watched Lut speak, his face showing how angry he was that director Edward had talked to her the way he did a few minutes ago.“It's your choice. If you don't want to be the leader of the workers union, then you don't be. That's all there is to it. Nobody should force you to accept a voluntary position.”She shrugged, knowing that saying something else was adding fuel to fire. Lut already looked angry, and she didn't want him to be more annoyed than he presently was, especially not on an issue that involved her.She was his personal assistant, and he wasn't her babysitter.“It's okay, Lut. It's natural for director Edward to be that way. Have you had breakfast? I can ask the kitchen staff to get something for us.”“No, I'm okay.” He said, shaking his head with a smile. “Mia made me have

“Oh, I understand you well, sir. But getting in touch with this transport company will do us a lot of favors.” She paused, looking around for heads nodding in agreement, and when she saw it, she continued speaking. “The consortium is a huge institution, and I know that at one point or the other, we're going to need multiple means of transportation. This is where they come in.” It was just a contribution, but Lut felt worried. Why was it looking as though she had sabotaged the meeting? He couldn't wait to end it. Claudia always succeeded in making him so nervous no matter how hard he tried to hide it. “That's a brilliant contribution, Claudia. I like that. Oh,” Lut added, smiling and raising his hands as though it was clasped in prayer. “Forgive me for not introducing her sooner. Everyone, this is Claudia, our new intern. She's working under Aurora for the moment, so you're going to be seeing a lot of her and hearing a lot of those b

Because director Edward had given her the permission to be under Aurora, Claudia had followed her to the hall where executives had their meetings. Seeing her there made Lutenant uncomfortable, but he didn't show it. Instead, he tried to focus on the team members that Aurora had chosen. They were all good workers. Ranging from Mr Green, to Doctor Gregory, Alicia, Aurora herself, and Mr Bedford. Lutenant had worked with them previously on the Deja Vu project, and could attest to how hardworking and creative they were. He needed people like them by his side if he wanted the new company he had just purchased to move forward. “Thank you all for coming here. I'll try my best to be as brief as possible because in an hour or two, we'll be on our way to the outskirts where y'all will take your first tour around the company we have just bought.” He paused, looking at each and everyone of them. I need your guidance and that helping hand.”Despite the fact that she was pleased to hear herself being described in that manner, she decided not to show it. She smiled shyly, and at that moment, the elevator stopped.“Here we are. I'm sure you know that I am Mr Lutenant's personal assistant, and that I handle most of his work for him, especially when he's busy. So for the moment, you're going to just watch me, and take notes.”She opened the door to the first office before Lutenant's own, which served as her office. It actually looked like a hallway or a passage before Lutenant's office, but she didn't mind. To Aurora, the size of an office or the extra space would never determine her output. She loved her job, and wanted nothing more than to prove that she could always be counted upon when needed.“Well,

“Oh, it's fine. I wouldn't have done most of it without Aurora, by the way. You're her boss, right? I saw you guys dancing earlier on. She's a keeper, you know? He knew it was a men's thing to talk about women, but wasn't he about to get married? Some things were best left unsaid. The two men, who were taller versions of Carl to him, grinned, and shook his hand.Just then, Natalie and Aurora approached the circle, smiling.“Our best guests are about to leave, babe.”“Oh, yes,” Carl said with a huge smile. “Lutenant here was just telling me.”“I owe you a gift, Natalie.” Lut said as the group made their way to the door to see him and Aurora off.“Oh, thank you. “Thank you everyone for coming once again. You've made something as common as a housewarming party a memorable one for me. I won't forget this, ever.”Aurora watched the entire mini speech with a special kind of warmth in her heart. She had never seen Natalie so happy.“One, two, three!”The crowd counted with the couple as the knife came down. There was scattered clapping, and then it was then readjusted into a beautiful round of applause.Grabbing a flute from an attendant who was walking by, Carl raised the flute.“Everyone, grab a glass please.”“Aurora? Can you help us make a toast?”Aurora had not seen that coming. Naturally shy, she raised an eyebrow and felt her skin burn under the gaze of the entirety of everyone who was in the room. However, she made her way to the front of the crowd, then raised her flute.“To a life of happiness, endless celebrations and every good thing in the world. To Natalie and Carl!”“To Natalie and Carl!”There were clinks as flute brushed flute. Sh

Aurora smiled in satisfaction, enjoying the shock and surprise on her best friend's face.Carl slipped out of the crowd in a moment, holding a card that said boldly, “Welcome to our home, Natalie. I will always love you.”Natalie burst into tears on seeing the card, and immediately fell into his arms. The crowd burst into a series of cooing, and Aurora stole a flute of champagne from an attendant’s tray, chugging it down and satisfying her thirst.“When…when did you do all of this, Carl? How did you plan this?” She looked at the crowd and the decorations, her hand scratching the back of her neck in confusion.“I wouldn't have done it without the help of your best friend here, Aurora. She helped me. We did it together. You have a wonderful friend, babe. She's a keeper.”“You knew?” Natalie asked her, as she struggled to wipe the tears from her eyes.“Of course I did. “Whatever. I'm dirty and sweaty already. How about I just sit in the dining room and you serve me, alright? I'll take my bath later.” Natalie grinned, leaving her in the sitting room. “You know, sometimes I wonder what you would've done without me. Just look at you, tired as hell, coming home to a beautiful meal you would've paid for at a restaurant. You owe me big time.” Aurora groaned audibly. “Can you just cut the boasting part and forward to the part where I eat and say thanks? You can boast after that, okay?” Natalie's laughter was loud. Aurora dropped her hand bag in the sitting room, snatching her phone. In the dining room, she texted Carl immediately, urging him to call Natalie in a few minutes. She nearly let the phone fall from her hands when she saw her best friend enter with a tray of the food. It was one of her favourites. Lamb chops, biscuits and an apple pie next to it. There was a salad w

  • The squad

Boss and personal assistant left the office building, walking stride by stride. Aurora, her phone in her hand, was trying to reach Carl. He was the one who had done the arrangements, and she would've helped out if she didn't have to go down to the Fredrickson's company and help Lutenant get the contract he was gushing over so much. She waited next to her old model Benz, waiting for Carl to pick up. When he didn't answer after the first ring, she turned to Lut, who was waiting for her and shrugged. “He hasn't picked?” “Yes. Makes me wonder what is wrong with him. Who makes plans and doesn't keep to his own part of the deal? If he knows how tired I am, he'll pick up.” Lut smiled. “Call him again.” His voice was calm, the exact opposite of what hers was. Nodding, she did just as he had requested. And to her shock, Carl picked up on the first ring. “Aurora!” He called her name as if he was out of breath.

  • Sealing the deal

The executive meeting hadn't gone well, or maybe someone had brought an offer larger than the amount he had proposed. He didn't know which one it was yet. “The executive meeting didn't end too well. The highest bidder plays a huge role, Lut. I'm afraid we chose someone else.” Lutenant smiled. He looked out of the window, forgetting what he had planned to say for an instant if things didn't go his way. “Lut? Are you still there?” “Yes sir. It's alright, Mr Fredrickson. I understand you perfectly. There are other companies in the industry. We'll have to look into it.” He glanced at his father, who raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the fact that he had heard his son's answer and knew that the deal was lost. “Come on, Lut, I'm kidding! Did you even believe that I'll sell to someone else? You've been the highest bidder so far. The rest have all come in under hundred. And even if you weren't, I would've still sold to you.
