Aurora shook her head again, leaving the sitting room with the hope to get a hold of herself before she did something she was going to probably regret later on.

“Good morning director Edward.”

Director Edward sat across from him, his face a sign that everything, indeed, wasn't alright.

And Lutenant James knew why.

The director of the consortium where he worked had called him quite a number of times the previous day, but he had ignored all the calls.

He knew it wasn't right, but he had had a very long day, and to him, he deserved some form of rest, even if it involved him ignoring the calls of one of the most important men in the company.

Now, however, he wondered if he was wrong. Maybe, he should've picked the call.

“Good morning Mr Lutenant. Such a lovely day, isn't it?”

Nodding, Lut sipped the coffee that had been given to him by the company kitchen staff. There were cookies on his plate, and he wanted to eat them so badly because he had left his house without breakfast, but he al

In police custody, Dylan Rick looked like the worst version of himself. A tired face, bags under his eyes and a complexion that stated how badly he had slept. He didn't smile when he saw the two men from the Chain Chain consortium, and Lut smiled regardless. It was the irony of it all that amused him, the fact that a few days ago, Dylan Rick would've jumped at the opportunity to shake his hand and say a few words of pleasantries. He wondered if that would ever happen again. He highly doubted it.Looking at director Edward, he found himself wondering what the visit was about. To him, Dylan Rick was where he belonged, in a place for sick people, and after the case, he was going to be transferred to what he would describe as the permanent site.“Good morning Dylan. Slept well?”Dylan's stare was filled with venom and an irritation that spoke volumes.“Do I look as though I slept well, Edward?”From the way Dylan replied, Lut could instantly tell that the two men knew each other prior. He

And with those words, he left the table, opening the door and waiting, while an officer let him out, before proceeding to escort him to his cell. When director Edward turned to him, Lut's first impulse was to duck. He had never seen the man so angry. Whatever relationship that he and Dylan shared, it had been deeper than he imagined. But to him, it was just a testament of how men could bend to change the truth. For him, he didn't care about friendship and believed in doing the right thing. “Lut, I'm highly disappointed in the way you've handled this matter, and I'll see to it that your father is told about your character once he's back from Washington. Do you know what you've brought upon the company with this action of yours? We don't need this kind of publicity.” Lutenant didn't reply. To him, it was good publicity. A company defending its worker and making sure that justice was served. What more did the director want? To

“Hello, good morning. How's everybody doing?” The Johnson's main house in the city was way bigger than the ranch house, and even though they were in the same room, Richard sometimes felt as though he was far away, and he was hearing Mr Johnson's voice from a distance. That was how big the house was. He glanced at Ariel, who had purposefully ignored him since the move from the countryside to the city, and had even rejected sleeping in the same room with him. She had chosen her bedroom, and he had to sleep in the guest room. Her mother, Mrs Johnson, knew that something was wrong, but let them solve their problems by themselves, however. That morning, he had woken up to a cup of coffee, waffles, fried eggs and bacon, and he had no choice but to wonder if going back to school was going to mean that he was going to miss the Johnson's house terribly, if not for anything, for their meals. He smiled, nodding at Mrs Johnson as he gr

“Look, I'm sorry, Ariel. I only want what is best for us. We're getting married soon, we need to have something bigger than just my agency and your salon skills. Don't you think so?” She glared at him in anger, then shook her head. “Things sort themselves out, Richard. It was always going to be alright in the end. You know this. The fact that you still decide to act as though finances were more important than I was was glaring. It was that bad, Richard.” Richard smiled, nodded and then made a move as if to touch her. She stood up, and then grabbed the tray that contained her breakfast, eyebrows narrowed in anger. “Don't, Richard, don't. Apologize properly. I deserve that. If we're going to do this, then you need to treat me better.” With those words, she left the dining room, leaving him to himself. He turned to Mrs Johnson, who sat in the next room, the sitting room, watching television but had certainly observed everything that had happened. Turning away from her in anger, he

“Cancel the meeting, director. My son here did the right thing. When someone is harassed, you don't wait for due process. You take the bull by the horns. You do what you're supposed to do.” Lutenant James didn't know how to feel at that moment. His father had jumped to his defence without thinking twice. “Sir, it's not really a huge meeting, and we won't take much of your time.” Lut watched his father speak, his eyes narrowed, his words firm. “Cancel it, director Edward. What we're supposed to do is see the victim, make sure she's alright, do everything to console her. We owe her that, instead of making this about someone else, which isn't right in any way.” Lut almost pumped his fist into the air in victory. He had expected the meeting to go so badly. Meeting with the board and the panel of the Chain Chain consortium meant that he had to have a solid defence, and a lot to say in order to bail himself out. Well, there had been another option he had never thought about, and that

“He's always been like that, dad. And I guess I'm kind of used to him now, you know. I can't help it.” Nodding, his father smiled. “Okay. Where is this young woman's house?” * “Final offer, two hundred millions dollars, Mr Johnson.” Richard's mouth watered insanely at the amount of money being mentioned on the table in the Du Point hotel. He had heard such amounts before, but not before him. Most times, he didn't even have a say in what was going on. But this time was different. Mr Johnson was edging towards four hundred million dollars, but was still standing on five hundred as his negotiation start up price. The man was the well known Claude Peterson. Owner of a production firm that produced movies and a construction company that had recently won construction company of the year in the city awards, the man was looking to be unstoppable by adding another company to his list of assets. “Thank you so much.” Aurora wanted to open whatever was in the bag immediately, but she decided within herself that it was going to be more polite if she looked at it later. “Thank you again, sir.” Lutenant's father looked at her, his eyebrow raised in surprise. “We bought that for you for lunch. Won't you take a look at what is inside?” She smiled, her hand going to the back of her neck instinctively. If someone had told her last year that at this same time, she would be attracted to the CEO’s handsome son and that the CEO would be in her house, gifting her lunch, she would've called the person a liar. But it was happening before her eyes at the moment. She opened the plastic bag, then hesitantly brought out the chocolate cake and the burrito in it. She didn't want to eat in front of them. “She's shy, dad.” Lut said, smiling wistfully at her. “Well, who wouldn't be? It's not everyday

For even trying to let people know, thank you, most victims wouldn't have done that.”She nodded again, this time blinking to make sure tears didn't make its way down her eyes.“Trust me when I say we will fight your battle to the end and make sure that justice is served. Thank you for your time, miss Aurora. Anytime you're ready to come back to work, you can call Lut.”She nodded, standing and clasping his hand in a firm handshake.“Thank you, sir.”“Son? I need your guidance and that helping hand.”Despite the fact that she was pleased to hear herself being described in that manner, she decided not to show it. She smiled shyly, and at that moment, the elevator stopped.“Here we are. I'm sure you know that I am Mr Lutenant's personal assistant, and that I handle most of his work for him, especially when he's busy. So for the moment, you're going to just watch me, and take notes.”She opened the door to the first office before Lutenant's own, which served as her office. It actually looked like a hallway or a passage before Lutenant's office, but she didn't mind. To Aurora, the size of an office or the extra space would never determine her output. She loved her job, and wanted nothing more than to prove that she could always be counted upon when needed.“Well,

There was scattered clapping, and then it was then readjusted into a beautiful round of applause.Grabbing a flute from an attendant who was walking by, Carl raised the flute.“Everyone, grab a glass please.”“Aurora? Can you help us make a toast?”Aurora had not seen that coming. Naturally shy, she raised an eyebrow and felt her skin burn under the gaze of the entirety of everyone who was in the room. However, she made her way to the front of the crowd, then raised her flute.“To a life of happiness, endless celebrations and every good thing in the world. How did you plan this?” She looked at the crowd and the decorations, her hand scratching the back of her neck in confusion.“I wouldn't have done it without the help of your best friend here, Aurora. • The ultimate welcome

“Whatever. I'm dirty and sweaty already. How about I just sit in the dining room and you serve me, alright? I'll take my bath later.” Natalie grinned, leaving her in the sitting room. “You know, sometimes I wonder what you would've done without me. Just look at you, tired as hell, coming home to a beautiful meal you would've paid for at a restaurant. You owe me big time.” Aurora groaned audibly. “Can you just cut the boasting part and forward to the part where I eat and say thanks? You can boast after that, okay?” Natalie's laughter was loud. Aurora dropped her hand bag in the sitting room, snatching her phone. In the dining room, she texted Carl immediately, urging him to call Natalie in a few minutes. She nearly let the phone fall from her hands when she saw her best friend enter with a tray of the food. It was one of her favourites. Lamb chops, biscuits and an apple pie next to it. There was a salad w

  • The squad

Boss and personal assistant left the office building, walking stride by stride. Aurora, her phone in her hand, was trying to reach Carl. He was the one who had done the arrangements, and she would've helped out if she didn't have to go down to the Fredrickson's company and help Lutenant get the contract he was gushing over so much. She waited next to her old model Benz, waiting for Carl to pick up. When he didn't answer after the first ring, she turned to Lut, who was waiting for her and shrugged. “He hasn't picked?” “Yes. Makes me wonder what is wrong with him. Who makes plans and doesn't keep to his own part of the deal? If he knows how tired I am, he'll pick up.” Lut smiled. “Call him again.” His voice was calm, the exact opposite of what hers was. Nodding, she did just as he had requested. And to her shock, Carl picked up on the first ring. “Aurora!” He called her name as if he was out of breath.

  • Sealing the deal

The executive meeting hadn't gone well, or maybe someone had brought an offer larger than the amount he had proposed. He didn't know which one it was yet. “The executive meeting didn't end too well. The highest bidder plays a huge role, Lut. I'm afraid we chose someone else.” Lutenant smiled. He looked out of the window, forgetting what he had planned to say for an instant if things didn't go his way. “Lut? Are you still there?” “Yes sir. It's alright, Mr Fredrickson. I understand you perfectly. There are other companies in the industry. We'll have to look into it.” He glanced at his father, who raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the fact that he had heard his son's answer and knew that the deal was lost. “Come on, Lut, I'm kidding! Did you even believe that I'll sell to someone else? You've been the highest bidder so far. The rest have all come in under hundred. And even if you weren't, I would've still sold to you.

  • Family friction

When Richard ended the call, his hands were trembling slightly and he felt lightheaded. When had Mr Johnson entered the room? Had he been listening to the entirety of his conversation with Hal? He wanted the earth to open up and swallow him. “Having problems at work?” He nodded, not knowing what else to say. “Yes, something like that.” Mr Johnson stood up, going to the window. He looked out of it, smiling at nothing in particular. When he turned to look at Richard, Richard noticed how furrowed his eyebrows were, and how he didn't even smile one bit, even though he had been smiling earlier. The smile had seemed to disappear into thin air. Something was wrong. “What kind of problems are you having at work, son? Are you aware that you're marrying my daughter, the only child I've ever had? Do you know that, Richard?” Richard swallowed hard. He wasn't scared of Mr Johnson, no, that was far from it.

  • Guilt by association

“Hundred million, Mr Fredrickson. I can't go higher.” Mr Fredrickson looked at members of his executive team. They all exchanged knowing glances which Lut knew he didn't understand. But he kept calm, watching the entire proceedings with his hand holding his flute. “Why don't we both sleep over it, Lut? My team and I will take your offer into consideration. Before anything, I want you to know that I've thought about leaving this company in good hands. And there are no other guaranteed good hands in this city apart from yours.” Lutenant nodded with a smile. “I understand you perfectly, Mr Fredrickson. I do.” “Now, there are still offers coming in, and we want to sell to the highest bidder, I'm afraid. At the same time, I want my legacy to live on even if this place doesn't belong to me anymore. You're the only one who can assure that.” “Oh come on, Mr Fredrickson, you flatter us way too much.” Mr Frederickson raised
