The legacy of the supreme ruler “No” more than an answer
He hadn't worked for it, even in the slightest. And the man before him who was about to sign a check to a company that barely existed didn't know of this. The entire thing looked surreal. It had fallen into his lap out of the blue.“Here you go. Seventy thousand dollars. The five thousand extra there is for giving me this beautiful office without being hostile. So far, you are the only agency that has treated me with love and without discrimination. Thank you, Mr Richard.”Richard glanced at Douglas, who smiled in spite of himself. He looked away, pretending that the money didn't interest him and that he wasn't eavesdropping.“Thank you, Mr Alvarez. It was nice doing business with you. I'm hoping that this won't be the last property you'll buy from us, you know.”“Of course, it won't. Hopefully, it only gets better from here!”As Mr Alvarez was getting ready to leave, Richard brought a bottle of champagne which he had reserved specially for the occasion, just in case everything went a
The legacy of the supreme ruler Lunch and anxiety
“Aurora…I…I didn't expect you to come in. What is it?”Lutenant asked, looking at his personal assistant. He knew it was lunch time, but he hadn't expected her to come inside his office.“Oh, oh, I'm sorry, Lut. I didn't know you were on the phone. I'll be outside..um.. waiting for lunch.”With those words, she closed the door behind her, leaving his office. Instantly, he felt guilty.“Lut, are you there? Thank you again, for doing this for me. The company won't regret having me as an intern. Thank you very much.”All of a sudden, he wanted to end the call and go on that lunch with Aurora. He stood up, stuttering.“It's okay, Claudia, I understand. I must go for lunch now. I'll call you as soon as I can find out if there is an application form for interns to fill, okay? Have a nice day.”Without waiting for another reply from her, he ended the call. He had to. He didn't know why, but he felt totally washed by guilt as he left the office, grabbing his car key with him.He didn't know w
The legacy of the supreme ruler Deception
Everything about it was different, Aurora noted. From the wooden furniture to the brick walls and stone floors, it gave it a rustic feel. Aurora hadn't even eaten yet, but she was telling herself that in her free time, she would be back.Being Lutenant's personal assistant definitely had its perks because without him taking her down here for lunch, she would've never discovered such a place because she rarely went out.“I love the lights.”His voice made her look up and nod. The lighting was soft and complemented the white tablecloths. Each table had flowers, something that was rare in American restaurants.“I'll definitely be back, Lut. This place is beautiful.”“Same here, same here.” Lut said, glancing at his phone. While she tried to pretend she hadn't noticed that he was a bit on his phone than usual, she also tried to pretend that she hadn't noticed him being surprised when she had entered his office earlier on to ask him if they were still going to go for lunch together. She wo

“This..this was nice, Lut. Thank you.”Lut nodded, stylishly slipping his phone into his pocket. He was trying to still look at his screen but in a way that Aurora wasn't going to notice. He had barely been attentive to anything his personal assistant had said all dinner. While he had been driving, he had a notification from Instagram. And when he checked it after they had entered the restaurant, he was shocked at what he had found.Claudia had sent him a request. He wasn't a social media person because in school, he was always bullied both offline and online to the extent that he had avoided social gatherings like a plague. But to hold a huge position in his father's company he had no other choice than to open an Instagram account. At that moment, he didn't know if creating that Instagram account was a good or bad thing, because he certainly didn't want to be texting his sister's best friend. But he had found himself going through her media and her posts. She had a sense of humour, a

“Are you listening to yourself, Ariel? You're filling your head with imaginations of all sorts! This man loves you. If he didn't, he wouldn't have treated you so well after all these months. He chose you, Ariel.”“But how I'm I sure…”Nancy stood up, coming to her as she faced the mirror, then cupping her face, before kissing her on the cheek.“You're a beautiful, proud and rich woman. And no-one, not even Richard should make you forget that. You deserve all good things in the world, and Richard is one of them. Don't let whatever you feel make you inferior, okay?”She smiled, nodding, finally convinced. That was why she had chosen Nancy to do her makeup. She didn't only boost her self confidence, she told her what she wanted to hear. And she told the truth most times. She had never believed Nancy was as beautiful as her. She had an European nose compared to her small and perfect one, and was a little bit too busty. But what her friend lacked in natural beauty, she covered up with styl
The legacy of the supreme ruler Day of reckoning
The next morning it had gotten worse. The feeling of fatigue and fear was up in Aurora's gut, and as she managed to finish taking her shower, she found out that she could barely move and do the necessary things she needed to start moving to work early enough so she could go down to the court with Lutenant. He texted her yesterday night, saying that he was going to take her there. He also said his father was going to come, but was mostly going to be in the crowd since he wasn't a witness. She was grateful for his support, but at the same time it didn't take away her fear.“Oh come on, Rora, don't tell me you're still scared.”She looked at her best friend exhaustedly, and for the first time she admired her bravery and her tirelessness. If only she had it too.“I'm not scared, just tired.”“You know you're going to win, right? Prince Charming is backing you. The whole company and their legal team are going to be doing everything to make sure you come out of that place victorious. You sh

“I'll be coming to the court with Claudia. She's going to use the case as reference for a paper she's writing.”Lutenant stopped in his stride. He was already dressed and was grabbing a hurried breakfast that consisted of a filled sandwich and iced tea.His goal for dressing early? To give his personal assistant the support she needed. He was completely focused on helping her that he wasn't ready for the words that had exited Mia's mouth. What did she mean by Claudia coming to the court? At that point, he wondered if she wasn't stalking him. He had purposely ignored her texts, and now he knew that he couldn't possibly ignore her in court as well.“Well, whatever. If she wants to say anything to me though, she'll have to wait till the proceedings finish taking place, you know. I'm sure as hell that I'll be on the witness box.”“Yeah, she'll be okay with that. I think it's the case she's interested in, not you.”Lut almost laughed. The irony. If only she knew that in the last twenty f
The legacy of the supreme ruler The verdict looms
So far, on the side of the prosecution which consisted of Jimmy Sanders and his law firm, everything was going so well.Above all, Lutenant was proud of the fact that Aurora had been able to say her story in court without being pressured. She had shown great composure, and when he had been called to testify, he echoed all he knew about the case.“We need time to gather more evidence, your honour.”The Rick brothers' lawyer was Sheila. Lut wasn't a stranger to legal battles. And thus, he knew about Sheila. She had helped a few criminals who had been accused in the past get off without a sentence. She was that good.Lut gazed at the judge, and then at Aurora. Even though it was obvious that she had done the hard part right, he could still see how uncomfortable she was with everything. He wanted to be close to her, shield her and tell her everything was going to be alright in the end, but he knew that according to the court, he wasn't allowed to leave his chair until he was called upon.

Under the radar
“Oh, I understand you well, sir. But getting in touch with this transport company will do us a lot of favors.” She paused, looking around for heads nodding in agreement, and when she saw it, she continued speaking. “The consortium is a huge institution, and I know that at one point or the other, we're going to need multiple means of transportation. This is where they come in.” It was just a contribution, but Lut felt worried. Why was it looking as though she had sabotaged the meeting? He couldn't wait to end it. Claudia always succeeded in making him so nervous no matter how hard he tried to hide it. “That's a brilliant contribution, Claudia. I like that. Oh,” Lut added, smiling and raising his hands as though it was clasped in prayer. “Forgive me for not introducing her sooner. Everyone, this is Claudia, our new intern. She's working under Aurora for the moment, so you're going to be seeing a lot of her and hearing a lot of those b
Work force workshop
Because director Edward had given her the permission to be under Aurora, Claudia had followed her to the hall where executives had their meetings. Seeing her there made Lutenant uncomfortable, but he didn't show it. Instead, he tried to focus on the team members that Aurora had chosen. They were all good workers. Ranging from Mr Green, to Doctor Gregory, Alicia, Aurora herself, and Mr Bedford. Lutenant had worked with them previously on the Deja Vu project, and could attest to how hardworking and creative they were. He needed people like them by his side if he wanted the new company he had just purchased to move forward. “Thank you all for coming here. I'll try my best to be as brief as possible because in an hour or two, we'll be on our way to the outskirts where y'all will take your first tour around the company we have just bought.” He paused, looking at each and everyone of them. He knew Claudia's eyes w

“Well, Darren usually handles all this kind of stuff, you know. But come with me, if he sent you my way, then it's for a reason.”“Oh, I'd surely love to work with you, miss Aurora. I need your guidance and that helping hand.”Despite the fact that she was pleased to hear herself being described in that manner, she decided not to show it. She smiled shyly, and at that moment, the elevator stopped.“Here we are. I'm sure you know that I am Mr Lutenant's personal assistant, and that I handle most of his work for him, especially when he's busy. So for the moment, you're going to just watch me, and take notes.”She opened the door to the first office before Lutenant's own, which served as her office. It actually looked like a hallway or a passage before Lutenant's office, but she didn't mind. To Aurora, the size of an office or the extra space would never determine her output. She loved her job, and wanted nothing more than to prove that she could always be counted upon when needed.“Well,

“Oh, it's fine. I wouldn't have done most of it without Aurora, by the way. You're her boss, right? I saw you guys dancing earlier on. She's a keeper, you know? Quite harsh and strict, but she knows what she wants. Ain't that right, boys?”Lut smiled, even though he was slightly tirritated. He knew it was a men's thing to talk about women, but wasn't he about to get married? Some things were best left unsaid. The two men, who were taller versions of Carl to him, grinned, and shook his hand.Just then, Natalie and Aurora approached the circle, smiling.“Our best guests are about to leave, babe.”“Oh, yes,” Carl said with a huge smile. “Lutenant here was just telling me.”“I owe you a gift, Natalie.” Lut said as the group made their way to the door to see him and Aurora off.“Oh, thank you. I'll be expecting it. Don't miss too much, Rora. I know you won't see food like mine in a long while, which means you can start coming down here to eat if you miss my cooking so much.”The group bur

“Thank you everyone for coming once again. You've made something as common as a housewarming party a memorable one for me. I won't forget this, ever.”Aurora watched the entire mini speech with a special kind of warmth in her heart. She had never seen Natalie so happy.“One, two, three!”The crowd counted with the couple as the knife came down. There was scattered clapping, and then it was then readjusted into a beautiful round of applause.Grabbing a flute from an attendant who was walking by, Carl raised the flute.“Everyone, grab a glass please.”“Aurora? Can you help us make a toast?”Aurora had not seen that coming. Naturally shy, she raised an eyebrow and felt her skin burn under the gaze of the entirety of everyone who was in the room. However, she made her way to the front of the crowd, then raised her flute.“To a life of happiness, endless celebrations and every good thing in the world. To Natalie and Carl!”“To Natalie and Carl!”There were clinks as flute brushed flute. Sh

The roar was deafening. Two pops followed, and in a minute, she was drenched with alcohol. Aurora smiled in satisfaction, enjoying the shock and surprise on her best friend's face.Carl slipped out of the crowd in a moment, holding a card that said boldly, “Welcome to our home, Natalie. I will always love you.”Natalie burst into tears on seeing the card, and immediately fell into his arms. The crowd burst into a series of cooing, and Aurora stole a flute of champagne from an attendant’s tray, chugging it down and satisfying her thirst.“When…when did you do all of this, Carl? How did you plan this?” She looked at the crowd and the decorations, her hand scratching the back of her neck in confusion.“I wouldn't have done it without the help of your best friend here, Aurora. She helped me. We did it together. You have a wonderful friend, babe. She's a keeper.”“You knew?” Natalie asked her, as she struggled to wipe the tears from her eyes.“Of course I did. The ultimate welcome
“Whatever. I'm dirty and sweaty already. How about I just sit in the dining room and you serve me, alright? I'll take my bath later.” Natalie grinned, leaving her in the sitting room. “You know, sometimes I wonder what you would've done without me. Just look at you, tired as hell, coming home to a beautiful meal you would've paid for at a restaurant. You owe me big time.” Aurora groaned audibly. “Can you just cut the boasting part and forward to the part where I eat and say thanks? You can boast after that, okay?” Natalie's laughter was loud. Aurora dropped her hand bag in the sitting room, snatching her phone. In the dining room, she texted Carl immediately, urging him to call Natalie in a few minutes. She nearly let the phone fall from her hands when she saw her best friend enter with a tray of the food. It was one of her favourites. Lamb chops, biscuits and an apple pie next to it. There was a salad w
The squad
Boss and personal assistant left the office building, walking stride by stride. Aurora, her phone in her hand, was trying to reach Carl. He was the one who had done the arrangements, and she would've helped out if she didn't have to go down to the Fredrickson's company and help Lutenant get the contract he was gushing over so much. She waited next to her old model Benz, waiting for Carl to pick up. When he didn't answer after the first ring, she turned to Lut, who was waiting for her and shrugged. “He hasn't picked?” “Yes. Makes me wonder what is wrong with him. Who makes plans and doesn't keep to his own part of the deal? If he knows how tired I am, he'll pick up.” Lut smiled. “Call him again.” His voice was calm, the exact opposite of what hers was. Nodding, she did just as he had requested. And to her shock, Carl picked up on the first ring. “Aurora!” He called her name as if he was out of breath.
Sealing the deal
The executive meeting hadn't gone well, or maybe someone had brought an offer larger than the amount he had proposed. He didn't know which one it was yet. “The executive meeting didn't end too well. The highest bidder plays a huge role, Lut. I'm afraid we chose someone else.” Lutenant smiled. He looked out of the window, forgetting what he had planned to say for an instant if things didn't go his way. “Lut? Are you still there?” “Yes sir. It's alright, Mr Fredrickson. I understand you perfectly. There are other companies in the industry. We'll have to look into it.” He glanced at his father, who raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the fact that he had heard his son's answer and knew that the deal was lost. “Come on, Lut, I'm kidding! Did you even believe that I'll sell to someone else? You've been the highest bidder so far. The rest have all come in under hundred. And even if you weren't, I would've still sold to you.
