"My own sister," Ethan whispered into the freezing wind, the words tearing out of him like a confession. "She's the one hunting me now."

Snow whipped across the narrow mountain pass, biting at his exposed skin. He pressed on, legs burning, the cold seeping deeper with every step. His breath fogged in harsh bursts.

*Deeper into the white,* Umbra urged, the voice steadier now inside his mind. *They follow heat. Give them nothing.*

Ethan stumbled on a hidden rock, catching himself on jagged stone. "Heat? How? I'm freezing my ass off out here. You keep talking like you know their tricks."

*I know the hunters,* Umbra replied, a low rumble. *Masks and shadows. Your sister leads them. She moves like you did in training.*

"Don't say that," Ethan snapped, voice cracking as he pushed forward. The path narrowed, cliffs dropping off to one side. "Evelyn wouldn't. She protected me growing up. Stood up to Dad when he got mean. This can't be her."

*Blood calls to blood,* Umbra said. *She tracks your steps. Knows the passes you favor. Listen to me now.*

Ethan stopped, leaning against an icy outcrop. His teeth chattered. "Listen to you? After Marcus... after I killed him because of you? I should be fighting you harder."

*Fight and die,* Umbra cut in. *Or join. Feel the cold shift. Pull the warmth in.*

A shiver ran through Ethan that had nothing to do with the snow. He closed his eyes, trying. Something twisted inside, like roots digging deeper. The biting wind eased a fraction. "It's... working? My hands don't feel as numb. What are you doing to me?"

*Sharing,* Umbra whispered, almost gentle. *We mask the fire. They hunt a ghost now.*

Shouts carried on the wind, distant but clear. "Fan out! He can't have gone far. Check the ledges!"

Ethan dropped low, crawling behind a snowdrift. "They're close. Too close. How does she know where I'd go? We haven't spoken in months."

*She knows your fear,* Umbra said. *The way you hesitate. Push harder. Let me guide the steps.*

"No," Ethan hissed, but he moved anyway, following the pull in his gut. His feet found solid ground where before there was only slick ice. "This feels wrong. Like I'm letting you in more. But damn it, I need to survive."

The bond tugged tighter, a parasitic warmth spreading through his veins. He hated how good it felt. "Talk to me. Tell me what you see. Don't just sit there whispering riddles."

*Three ahead. One on the ridge. Your sister holds the center,* Umbra answered. *She carries silver. Old hate in her eyes.*

Ethan's heart clenched. He scrambled up a steep incline, snow cascading behind him. "Silver? For what, killing me? Evelyn used to braid my hair when I was little. Sing stupid songs to make me laugh. She can't want me dead."

*Want is complicated,* Umbra said. *Duty burns hotter. She calls your name in the storm.*

A voice echoed then, closer. Female. Sharp. "Ethan! I know you're here. Stop running. We can still fix this."

He froze mid-step. "That's her. Oh god, that's really her." His voice broke. "Evelyn? You came after me?"

Silence stretched, then her reply sliced through the wind. "I had to. The scouts report to me now. Turn yourself in. The empire will study you. Maybe contain it."

"Contain it?" Ethan shouted back, unable to stop himself. He pressed against the rock face. "You mean lock me up like an animal. After everything we went through? You know what this thing did to me."

*I can end her hunt,* Umbra offered, dark promise in the tone. *One strike. Quick.*

"Shut your mouth," Ethan growled low. But he kept moving, coordinating now, letting Umbra steer him toward a shadowed crevice. "I won't hurt her. Not Evelyn. She's family. The last real thing I have."

Her voice came again, nearer. Boots crunched on snow. "Family? You slaughtered people in the streets. Marcus is dead. His blood's on your hands. I taught you better than that."

Ethan winced, the words hitting like fists. "Marcus betrayed me first. He was going to sell me out. I didn't want to... I didn't have a choice." His breath hitched. "Please, Ev. Call them off. Help me hide."

"I can't," she said, voice thick with something raw. Hesitation there. "They'll kill me too if I fail. This beast inside you. It's changing everything. I see the tracks. You're masking heat now, aren't you? Smart. But I know your patterns."

*She adapts fast,* Umbra noted, respect edging the words. *Like us.*

Ethan slipped into the crevice, snow dusting his shoulders. The cold pressed less now, thanks to the bond. He felt Umbra deeper, coiled and waiting. "How are you doing this? Making me stronger. I hate needing you."

*Need is the start,* Umbra replied. *Trust comes next. Breathe with me. Slow the heart.*

He tried. In. Out. The panic eased just enough. "Okay. Okay, what now? They're circling. I hear the dogs again."

*Dogs fear the shadow,* Umbra said. *Push the cold out. Become the storm.*

"Ethan!" Evelyn called, her tone shifting to desperate. "I don't want to shoot you. Remember the cabin? When we hid from Dad's rages? We promised each other. No more running alone."

Tears froze on Ethan's cheeks. "I remember. You held me when I cried. Said we'd always have each other. What happened to that promise, Ev? Why hunt me like this?"

"Because you're dangerous," she answered, closer still. A shadow moved at the pass entrance. "The reports. Bodies torn apart. I can't ignore that. But if you surrender, maybe I can talk to the commanders. Get you help."

"Help?" Ethan laughed bitterly, edging deeper into shadow. "They want me dead or caged. And you... you're leading them. My big sister. The one who taught me to throw a punch."

*She lies to herself,* Umbra whispered. *Pain in her voice. She wavers.*

"Quiet," Ethan muttered. The bond pulsed, feeding him her position somehow. He climbed higher, silent now. "I feel you in my head more. Like you're part of me. This parasitic thing. It's scary as hell."

*Scary keeps you alive,* Umbra said. *Coordinate. I mask. You move.*

Another shout from below. "Flank left! He's using the high path. Evelyn, careful!"

She cursed. "I know his moves. He always went high when scared. Ethan, stop! You're making this worse."

"Worse?" Ethan yelled down, voice echoing off the peaks. "You think this isn't already hell? Killing Marcus broke me. Now you're here, ready to finish it. I loved you."

Silence. Then her voice, softer. "I love you too. That's why it hurts. Come down. Let me see your face."

He peered over the edge. There she was, bundled in scout gear, crossbow raised but not aimed. Her eyes scanned, fierce and familiar. The sight twisted something deep in his chest.

*She will pull the trigger,* Umbra warned. *Unless we strike first.*

"No," Ethan breathed, pulling back. The bond tightened, warmth spreading against the freeze. He was listening more, moving with Umbra's instincts. "But I need you right now. Guide me out of this."

*Left tunnel. Drop low. Become unseen.*

He followed, crawling through snow-covered rocks. The cat and mouse stretched, every sound amplified. Evelyn's team called signals back and forth.

"Nothing on the thermal. He's gone cold somehow."

"Keep pushing," she ordered. "He can't hide forever."

Ethan's hands shook as he paused in a small cave mouth. "She's too good. Knows exactly where I'd hide. How do I outrun my own sister?"

*You don't outrun,* Umbra said. *You become more. Let the bond settle. We are one now.*

The words sank in, heavy and true. Ethan felt the shift, the parasitic pull turning into something like alliance. "Fine. I stop fighting you. For now. Just get me through this pass."

*Good,* Umbra purred. *The shadow rises.*

More footsteps crunched below. Evelyn's voice rang out again, laced with pain. "Ethan, please. Don't make me choose between you and the kingdom."

He covered his mouth, fighting the sob. The emotional weight crushed down, nearly breaking him right there in the snow. His sister. The hunter closing in.

No safe words left. Only the beast and the storm.

And the terrible truth that family might be the deadliest predator of all.

I should have died under ten tons of crushed steel and burning concrete, but Evelyn dragged me out of that sinking nightmare by sheer force of will."Don't you ever, ever pull a stunt like that again, do you hear me, Ethan?" Evelyn sobbed, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she pressed a warm cloth against the bleeding gash on my forehead inside the cramped medical bay of the flagship."I'm right here, Evelyn, I'm breathing, look at me," I whispered, reaching up to gently catch her trembling wrists while the low, rhythmic hum of the ship's engines vibrated through the floorboards beneath us."You nearly didn't come back through that airlock, Ethan," Miller muttered, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, his face pale beneath his stubble. I yelled back, throwing my arm out to catch an older prisoner who tripped over a shattered length of pipe. The corridor behind us was dissolving into a nightmare of fire and rushing seawater. Sparks rained down like blinding golden tears, chewing through the metal floor plates while automated defense turrets mounted in the walls spun wildly, their crimson targeting lenses snapping back and forth in a frantic search for anything breathing."Ethan, duck!" Shae shrieked, hauling me down by my jacket just as a high-velocity burst of plasma fire sheared through the air where my head had been a second before, leaving a smoking crater in the bulkhead."Everyone stay low, crawl if you

You are walking straight into a cage that has no doors, stranger, the young woman whispered, pulling away from my outstretched hand as if my touch would burn her."Every cage has a door if you hit it hard enough," I panted, gripping the heavy iron locking mechanism of her cell with both hands while Umbra channeled a surge of raw thermal heat through my palms. The metal groaned under the pressure, screaming as the internal gears melted into a pool of glowing slag before the heavy door swung outward with a loud, echoing crash."You broke it... you actually broke the seal," she breathed, staring at the open space in front of her with wide, terrified eyes, refusing to step out into the hallway. "Do you have any idea what the machine overseers do to anyone who leaves their designated sector?""They try to kill us, and right now I am returning the favor," I said, stepping inside the small, damp cell and offering her my

I yelled back into the empty air, though I knew she could never hear me over the screaming storm. The metal talons dug tighter around my waist, pressing the breath from my chest until stars danced behind my eyelids. We weren't just flying through the storm clouds anymore. The machine tilted sharply downward, plunging at a terrifying, headfirst angle straight toward the churning black teeth of the ocean."Hold your breath, host, we are about to hit the water at terminal velocity!" Umbra warned inside my head, the entity's voice sharp with sudden, raw panic."Tell me

Water should not scream when it breaks, yet the entire ocean seemed to shriek as those monolithic metal hulls tore through the surface, casting massive sheets of white foam and boiling spray across our decks."Hard to port, turn the bow into them right now or they will slice us in half!" Garrick screamed, his face locked in absolute terror as he whipped the iron wheel around with every ounce of muscle he possessed."We cannot turn fast enough, Garrick, look at the size of those things!" Evelyn cried out, her hands gripping the wooden railing so tightly her knuckles turned stark white as a mountain of dark, reflective steel towered over our starboard side."Don't just stand there staring at them, man the deck cannons, open fire!" Miller roared, sprinting across the tilting planks toward an automated turret while bullets and shrapnel began to rain down around us."It won't do any good, Miller, look at their hulls!"
