Chapter 3

The sun rose, and Jack shed tears of pain. Even his broken bones and all the wounds on his body weren’t enough to surpass the suffering caused by Hillary’s betrayal.

"I guess it’s better if I just die now," he thought, then closed his eyes, ready to let go.

Suddenly, he began to see a screen appear in front of his eyes.

[ ACTIVATING SYSTEM.... ]

"I must be close to death, and now I’m hallucinating," Jack thought.

[ USER: JACK EMBER

STATUS: CRITICAL

RESTORE? YES NO ]

"What the hell is this? What’s going on? Did they hit me too hard on the head?"

[ YOU MUST MAKE A CHOICE IN 10... 9... 8... ]

"Alright, alright... I choose yes, yes, I want to restore," Jack said with difficulty, his face twisting in pain.

[ BEGINNING RESTORATION.... ]

Jack closed his eyes, and within seconds, he was able to get up from the street as if nothing had happened. His body was still covered in blood, but his wounds had completely healed. He could open and close his hands without any problem, just like his legs, which had been broken just moments ago.

"Was it all just a dream then?" Jack said incredulously.

But he panicked when he saw that screen appear in front of his eyes again. The shock made him fall backward onto the ground.

[ MILLIONAIRE NO. 2 OFFERS $10,000 TO LICK BLOOD OFF YOUR ARM

ACCEPT REJECT ]

Jack raised his eyebrows in confusion. Everything about this was too strange to be true. Was he going insane?

[ OFFER EXPIRES IN 10... 9... 8... ]

"I accept! I accept! I accept!" Jack shouted quickly.

Deep down, he knew it was something stupid. His hallucinations were far from reality. No one in the world would pay that much money just to see him lick a little bit of his own blood. But it seemed fitting to play along with his thoughts.

He slowly brought the tip of his tongue closer, all the while thinking he was doing something crazy. He trembled slightly, but he didn’t stop until his tongue reached his arm. He only tasted a tiny bit of the blood on him.

[ CONGRATULATIONS!

MISSION COMPLETED

TRANSFERRING FUNDS TO BANK ACCOUNT... ]

Just then, his phone buzzed with a notification from the bank. He had just received $10,000 from an anonymous account.

Jack dropped his phone to the ground in astonishment. This couldn’t be real. Everything was becoming stranger and more mysterious. And he couldn’t stop asking himself the same question over and over again: "Am I going crazy?"

He picked up his phone from the ground and ran out of that place, looking in all directions. He was paranoid, constantly wondering if someone was watching him.

"Alright... Alright... Calm down! There must be a reasonable explanation for all this," he told himself as he walked through the city.

He saw a very luxurious limousine and quickly remembered what had happened the night before.

"Of course... This must be a prank from Theo and Ricco. Those jerks never get tired of mocking me."

He stopped in front of a massive water fountain in the center of a beautiful, bustling plaza while people looked at him with concern, seeing his body covered in red stains.

[ MILLIONAIRE NO. 6 OFFERS $20,000 TO BATHE IN THE FOUNTAIN.

ACCEPT REJECT ]

"No... That’s it. I’m not going to be part of this stupid game anymore," Jack said angrily, crossing his arms.

People watched him talk to himself and backed away in fear, thinking he had completely lost his mind.

[ MILLIONAIRE NO. 6 DOUBLES HIS OFFER.

$40,000 TO BATHE IN THE FOUNTAIN

ACCEPT REJECT ]

But Jack remained with his arms crossed, refusing to continue with the game. Though he quickly remembered the massive debt he had with the bank for the engagement ring he had bought for Hillary. That made him hesitate for a moment.

[ MILLIONAIRE NO. 6’S OFFER EXPIRES IN 10... 9... 8... ]

Jack tried to stay firm in his stance, but the thought of the forty thousand dollars he was throwing away lingered. If the Walton brothers were playing with him, at least they were paying well for him to be their toy.

[ 4... 3... 2... ]

Jack set his phone aside and started running like a madman. He jumped into the fountain like it was a public pool, performing a cannonball dive, and although he denied it, deep down, he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Water splashed everywhere, soaking anyone near the edge. Jack submerged himself to the bottom, and for a moment, there was peace in his ears, with only the sound of the moving water.

When he resurfaced, he heard the whistle of a police officer rushing toward him.

[ CONGRATULATIONS!

YOU JUST COMPLETED ANOTHER MISSION

TRANSFERRING FUNDS TO BANK ACCOUNT..... ]

"You are under arrest for disturbing the peace," the officer said as he helped Jack out of the fountain.

"Just a minute, officer. I need to grab my phone," Jack said.

As he approached and picked up his phone, he immediately saw a notification from the bank on the screen, showing that he had received a $40,000 transfer from an unknown account.

Finally, Jack smiled, relieved. If he was going crazy, at least he was doing it in style. After that, he calmly returned to be arrested by the officer waiting by the fountain.

Jack was locked in a small cell for a couple of hours before being taken to Sergeant Brandon’s office.

"Are you Mr. Ember?" Sergeant Brandon asked as Jack peered into the door.

"Yes, it’s me," Jack replied.

"Please come in and have a seat," Brandon said, placing his coffee on the desk.

[ MILLIONAIRE NO. 2 OFFERS $5,000 TO DRINK THE MAN’S COFFEE

ACCEPT REJECT ]

"I see here that you claim some men beat you and broke your bones, is that right?" Sergeant Brandon asked while holding Jack’s report.

But Jack just stared at him with wide eyes.

"Well... But I see that you are completely healthy," Brandon insisted.

Suddenly, Jack took the sergeant’s coffee and began drinking it right in front of his eyes, leaving him speechless.

Sergeant Brandon took Jack’s report and tore it into a thousand pieces.

"I’m going to let you go because I believe you have no idea what you’re doing or saying."

"Thank you very much," Jack said, quickly leaving the office.

As he walked away, he received a notification on his phone informing him of a $5,000 transfer to his bank account from an unknown source.

Jack smiled and continued on his way.

Rex's cell was in sight, and so were the officers guarding it, their guns spitting fire. There was no time to think, only to react. The million-dollar system in Jack's head activated, flooding his senses with an avalanche of data: bullet trajectories, ricochet angles, officers' movement patterns. His agility, amplified by the neural implant, was supernatural. He hit the ground, rolling with the grace of a feline, bullets whizzing inches above his head. The cold linoleum felt strange against his skin.Rex, inside his cell, screamed as he heard the shooting. He cowered under the grimy metal bed, seeking shelter from the hell that was breaking loose a few feet away. Gunshots echoed off the concrete, ricocheting, creating a sonic chaos that vibrated the air.Jack fired his air pistol. Cork bullets, propelled by the force of the air, st

The plan relied on timing. And now, a small blinking light on Jack’s watch signaled that the moment had come.He pulled out his phone to send a message. He was already at the exact point, but he needed Kloe and Lix to play their part for the plan to succeed.Outside, on the main street, the stillness of the early morning was suddenly broken. Kloe and Lix emerged from the alley, not stealthily, but with calculated purpose. Kloe unrolled a banner with surprising speed, revealing hastily scrawled letters:"JUSTICE FOR THE INNOCENT. NO MORE UNJUST IMPRISONMENT."Lix, beside her, held another one: "OPEN THE CELLS. THE TRUTH WILL COME TO LIGHT."These weren’t cries of rage, but controlled, rehearsed chants.“Freedom! Freedom!” Kl

Two patrol cars pulled up at the same time in front of the city police station. There were many other vehicles to guard and serve as escorts, but those two patrol cars were the main attractions of the night. Obviously there was no shortage of curious onlookers who approached from a safe distance to try to see something live. Those drones flying in the sky above the officers' heads was too flashy to pass up. Plus, social media was playing a huge role in those broadcasts. Everyone wanted to take a picture or record themselves next to those drones or with one of the participants of the death battles to try to get attention on the networks and receive approval from their followers. That's why the police station was soon filled with curious onlookers who were getting closer and closer to the main entrance. "Please! Please, gentlemen!" the police chief began to shout to all those people who had gathered at the place."We want to see the participants!", shouted one of those onlookers from

“Drop the knife and put your hands up!” the officer insisted through the megaphone.Rex’s chest was completely illuminated in red from the infrared sights coming from the guns that were aimed and ready to fire. Of course, none of those agents wanted to kill a scared teenager. All of them stood nervously, hoping the order to open fire wouldn’t come. Finally, Rex reacted and realized there was no reason to keep fighting. Ember was already in police custody, and he had no way out. Surely, both of them would end up locked in a cell, only waiting for the moment their heads would explode—that would be the end of their lives. He threw the knife onto the ground, just as the officer with the megaphone had instructed. This brought immense relief to all the officers, knowing they no longer had to shoot the boy. Rex got down on his knees and raised his hands to make it clear he was surrendering.“Place your hands on your head!” ordered the officer, as others rushed in to arrest him.Rex placed hi

Rex kept running through the darkness of that street. He only had the moonlight and the beams from those drones that didn’t leave him alone for even a second. The mission of those cameras was to record every detail of the battle—and they were doing it very well. There were maybe about a kilometer left when Rex heard a sound coming from his phone. A peculiar sound, one he recognized immediately. The battery had reached its maximum limit, and the phone was warning that it was about to shut down.A single glance at the screen was enough to realize that the phone was completely shutting off."No! Wait! Please!" Rex shouted in the middle of that lonely, dark street, speaking directly to his phone's screen. Now there was no way to know how to get to Ember’s house. He didn’t know if that boy was waiting for him, or if he had already gone to hide somewhere.Rex was heading straight toward an uncertain destination, not knowing what to expect. Kloe had to strain her eyes so they could quickly adjust to the darkness. She needed to see what the hell had attacked Lix and dragged her to the corner of the house. Her eyes finally adjusted, and her vision sharpened so fast that it now felt like she had a filter over her retinas. That was enough to see Jack Stanton in the corner of that house. His back was against the wall, one of his arms wrapped around Lix's neck, and with his other hand, he was pointing a revolver directly at her head. Lix's face was filled with pure terror, her eyes wide open, while she clutched at Jack's arm around her neck, as if trying to keep him from choking her. Jack used his thumb to cock the small hammer of the revolver, and the gun made a very distinct sound that caused Lix to start crying from fear. Just pulling the trigger would be enough to end her life before Kloe could do anything to stop it.“Jack! Jack! It’s me! I’m Kloe! I’m your grandfather’s friend!” Kloe shouted quickly, hands raised as if t
