The iron bolt cracked the sound barrier, shrieking straight for Raka’s forehead.

His muscles refused to twitch. His shattered core screamed in silent panic.

CLANG!

A massive iron greatsword slammed down like a guillotine inches from Raka’s nose, swatting the bolt out of the air in a spray of sparks. Master Thorne stood over him, veins bulging against his neck, his roar shaking the flagstones.

"Lock the perimeter!" Thorne bellowed, eyes fixed on the distant spire. "Archers on the east wall! Secu

Drake spat a glob of blood onto the cold stone floor, hefting his massive warhammer with a grunt. "Talks too much for a guy standing on a collapsing floor.""Focus on the footing, not his speech!" Raka shouted, his voice cracking as the floor panels beneath his boots groaned and tilted another agonizing five degrees toward the roaring incineration pit below. The heat from the furnace rose in suffocating waves, baking the sweat on Raka’s face into a stinging salt. Across the gap, Valerius stood on the iron catwalk, his golden eyes cold as he pressed a rune-carved activation toggle on his control console. The grinding shriek of tearing metal echoed off the stone walls as the entire platform beneath them disconnected completely from the main vault structure."We're sliding!" Kael screamed, his good hand clawing desperately at a rusted floor bolt that promptly snapped under his weight. He began to slip toward the edge, sliding down the smooth steel panel.Rin reacted before anyone else. W

"Watch your left, kid!" Drake bellowed, swinging his heavy warhammer in a wide, vicious arc.The massive iron head slammed straight into the chest of the lead inquisitor, sending the armored guard crashing backward into three of his comrades with a sickening crunch of breaking bone."I'm watching! I'm watching!" Raka gasped, ducking under a sweeping polearm. His left shoulder scraped against the wet stone wall, sending a fresh wave of fire shooting through his cracked ribs. The air in the subterranean tunnel turned thick with the smell of scorched ozone and fresh blood. Red emergency glyphs pulsed along the low ceiling, casting a frantic, bloody light over the frantic melee. Inquisition guards swarmed out of the dark recesses of the old slave pens, their heavy armor clanking and their suppression shackles glowing with a malevolent, anti-magic hum."Too many!" Kael roared, slashing blindly with his iron dagger. He wasn't the graceful, arrogant swordsman from the Academy anymore; he was

  • Chapter 21: Descent Into the Old Catacombs

"You're bleeding through your tunic again, kid," Drake muttered, shifting the heavy warhammer on his shoulder with a dull thud. "If you drop dead before we clear the gates, I’m not carrying the body."Raka gritted his teeth, pressing a trembling hand against his ribs where the cracked core still burned like swallowed coals. "I'm... not dead yet. Just feel like my lungs are full of ground glass.""Save the dramatic breathing for when we're actually safe," Rin snapped, her knuckles white as she clutched the blood-stained Council ledger against her chest like a shield. She threw a sharp glance over her shoulder toward the dark, twisting alley behind them. "Valerius isn't going to let us walk out of the outer ring. He knows every patrol route, every bribe, and every dead drop.""Which is exactly why we aren't taking the main path," Drake said, turning on his heel and motioning with his chin toward a narrow, fog-choked maintenance stairwell descending even deeper into the undercity. "Move.

The damp, metallic tang of the lower academy's aqueducts clung to the back of Raka’s throat, tasting faintly of iron and old secrets. He squeezed his eyes shut for a split second, trying to drown out the phantom hum of the system notifications flashing behind his eyelids."You’re bleeding through your tunic again, kid," Drake muttered, shifting the heavy warhammer on his shoulder with a dull thud. The freezing water of the aqueduct slapped against Raka’s face, knocking the remaining breath right out of his bruised lungs."Keep moving!" Rin’s voice hissed from the absolute blackness ahead, splashing furiously against the stone floor. "If Valerius clears that bulkhead, we’re dead in five minutes!""I’m moving, I’m moving!" Raka gasped, his left hand dragging uselessly against the slime-slicked wall. His right palm was still charred black from the iron spike discharge. "My ribs feel like they're rearranging themselves every time I take a stroke!""Stop whining and swim, kid," Kael choked out, coughing up a mouthful of foul-tasting sewer water ahead of them. "Unless you want your core harvested for the next batch of student break-through crystals!""Shut up, both of you! Footsteps!" Rin suddenly hissed, her boots stopping dead against the submerged grating.Raka froze, treading water in the pitch-black tunnel. The steady, heavy clank-clank-clank of armored boots echoed from the jun

"You brought a book to a knife fight, Valerius. Bold choice," Raka muttered, though his ribs screamed every time he took a shallow breath.Valerius didn't even blink. He adjusted his pristine white cuffs as if he were inspecting a particularly dull ledger, not standing over a freshly murdered instructor. "A book, Raka, is much heavier than a knife when you drop it on someone's career. Or their head.""Spare the speech, you psychopathic bureaucrat," Rin hissed, her crossbow locked right between the President's eyes. "Where is she?""Basement level three. Sector B. Though I’d hurry if I were you—the flow rate has been a bit unstable today," Valerius replied smoothly, his golden eyes curving into polite crescents. "Kael, my boy, I expected better from a house built on military loyalty. Hanging out with dropout trash? Disappointing."Kael wiped bile from his chin, staggering up from the bloody floor. "You... you harvested Milo. You harvested all of them. And you sold their cores back to u
