Chapter 1: The Spark of Suffering

The dungeon air was thick with the scent of damp moss and rotting vegetation, but the silence between the four adventurers was far heavier. Raka stood in the center of the gloom, his staff trembling in his grip, his chest heaving as the faint wisp of mana he had tried to conjure flickered and died like a guttering candle.

"Seriously?" Kael, the group’s self-appointed leader, stepped forward, his heavy pauldrons clanking with every aggressive stride. "That’s it? That was the big finish? A spark that wouldn’t even light a campfire?"

Raka bit his lip, his eyes darting toward the floor. "I… I focused. The mana just isn't circulating right. Maybe if I had a moment to recalibrate—"

"Recalibrate?" Elara, the party’s rogue, let out a sharp, mocking laugh as she sheathed her daggers. "Raka, you’ve been ‘recalibrating’ for three hours. We’re in the Deep Sinks, not a classroom. You’re not just dead weight, you’re a liability."

"I can do better," Raka insisted, though his voice cracked. "Let me try the light-binding spell again. I know the incantation by heart."

"You know the words, yeah," Kael sneered, shoving past him and bumping his shoulder hard enough to send Raka stumbling against a wet stone wall. "But you’ve got the mana capacity of a garden slug. We came here for loot, not to babysit a bottom-feeder who can’t even illuminate a dark corridor."

"Don't be too hard on him, Kael," the healer, Mira, chimed in, though her tone held more pity than kindness. "He’s doing his best. It’s just… some people aren't meant for the front lines."

"And some people aren't meant for this party," Kael retorted. He stopped, turning back to glare at Raka with eyes as cold as flint. "Listen, kid. We’re done. You’re too slow, your reserves are bottom-tier, and frankly, I’m sick of hearing you apologize for existing."

Raka gripped his staff so hard his knuckles turned white. "You’re kicking me out? Here? We’re three levels deep."

"Find your own way out," Elara said, already turning toward the exit. "Or stay here and become goblin bait. Either way, it’s not our problem anymore."

"Wait, guys, come on!" Raka called out, his desperation clawing at his throat. "We’re a team! We signed a contract at the Guild!"

"Contracts are for people who provide value," Kael spat, not looking back. "You’re a statistical error in our payroll. Don't follow us, Raka. You’re done."

The sound of their heavy boots fading into the distance left Raka in a suffocating shroud of silence. He sank to his knees, the cold stone seeping through his tunic. The staff rolled from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly across the floor.

"Stupid," he whispered to the empty room. "So stupid. You really thought you were a mage, didn't you?"

He looked at his palms. They were trembling, clean and unscarred—the mark of someone who had never actually survived a real fight, someone who had relied on others to carry his burdens until they grew tired of the weight.

"Low mana," he muttered, closing his eyes as a wave of dizziness washed over him. "Maybe I should have stayed in the village. Maybe I should have just been a farmhand."

He slumped forward, his forehead pressing against the dirt. The physical exhaustion was secondary to the crushing weight of failure. He felt his pulse slowing, a dark, heavy numbness creeping into his limbs. As his consciousness began to fray at the edges, the shadows in the room seemed to shift.

“Pathetic.”

The voice didn't come from the corridor. It resonated deep within the marrow of his bones—a sound like grinding tectonic plates and the crackle of ozone.

Raka bolted upright, staring into the darkness. "Who’s there?"

“A vessel filled with nothing but excuses. You seek power, yet you tremble at the thought of the price. You wish to command the heavens, yet you can barely spark a flame.”

"I don't know what you're talking about," Raka stammered, scrambling backward. "Is this a hallucination? Am I dying?"

“I am Thor, the Storm-Bringer, the King of Thunder. I look down upon this pathetic realm and see only sheep. But you… your soul is cracked. And where there is a crack, the lightning can enter.”

"Thor? The god of… thunder?" Raka let out a ragged, hysterical laugh. "Right. I’ve finally lost it. The stress finally fried my brain."

“Accept the burden, boy, or rot here in the dirt. I offer you the Thunder Training System. A path to godhood, or a path to ash. Make your choice.”

"System?" Raka’s mind raced. He had heard whispers of ‘Systems’ in myths—the gifts of the Ancients, the tools of legendary heroes. His heart began to hammer against his ribs. "What does it mean? What do I have to do?"

“Simple. You endure. You command. You become the storm. Do you accept?”

Raka looked at the dark tunnel ahead. He thought of Kael’s sneer. He thought of Mira’s pity. He thought of the endless years of being the weakest person in every room he entered.

"I accept," Raka whispered, his voice gaining a sudden, terrifying steel. "Whatever it takes. I accept."

A jolt of pure, white-hot energy slammed into his brain. Raka screamed, arching his back as his vision shattered into a kaleidoscope of violet and gold light. A semi-transparent screen flickered into existence before his eyes, glowing with an impossible, humming intensity.

[SYSTEM AWAKENED]

[HOST: RAKA]

[CURRENT RANK: DUST-TIER]

[PATH: THUNDER-BRINGER]

[WELCOME, MORTAL. THE PATH TO THE HEAVENS IS PAVED IN SCARS.]

Raka gasped, clutching his head. The information burned into his mind—a map of his own potential, a list of requirements, and a singular, terrifying task.

[FIRST QUEST INITIATED: BAPTISM BY LIGHTNING]

[OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE 100 LIGHTNING STRIKES.]

[LOCATION: THE FORSAKEN PLATEAU.]

[REWARD: PERMANENT MANA REGENERATION +5, PASSIVE ABILITY: CONDUCTOR.]

[WARNING: DEATH IS A LIKELY OUTCOME.]

"One hundred strikes?" Raka blinked, his breath hitching. "Are you trying to kill me?"

“Death is just the beginning of the training, boy,” the voice echoed, fading away. “Now, stand up. The sky is waiting.”

The cavern walls began to dissolve, the stone reality peeling away like wet parchment to reveal an open, desolate expanse beneath a bruised, purple sky. Raka stood, his legs shaking, his mind reeling from the sudden shift in geography. He was miles away from the dungeon, standing on a jagged peak of rock.

"Wait, I’m not ready!" Raka yelled at the empty air.

The sky above him didn't answer. Instead, the clouds began to swirl, a vortex of unnatural, ionizing force gathering directly over his head. The air grew heavy, static electricity causing his hair to stand on end. His clothes began to spark with tiny blue arcs.

He looked up. The sky was perfectly clear, save for the localized swirl of chaos above him. There was no thunder, no warning. Just the terrifying, mechanical hum of a cosmic system preparing to execute its first command.

A single, blinding bolt of artificial lightning erupted from the blue sky, tearing through the air with a deafening, metallic shriek. It locked onto him, a pillar of pure, directed vengeance.

Raka’s eyes widened, his hands instinctively reaching toward the descent of the light. "No, wait—!"

The world turned white.
