Chapter 11: The First Request

Inside the Haven, you wouldn't have known the world had ended if you didn't look at the external sensors.

On Level 1, the main dining hall smelled of roasted chicken, garlic butter, and warm rye bread. The artificial sunlight ceiling hummed soft and gold, casting a comfortable spring warmth over the hundreds of residents eating lunch. Children ran along the polished stone walkways, their laughter bouncing off walls that were completely oblivious to the hellscape outside.

Han sat at a quiet corner table, picking at a plate of seared steak and roasted potatoes while scanning the exterior environmental feeds on his system screen.

Outside, the camera feeds mounted on the mountain peak showed nothing but a wall of blinding white snow and dark, swirling acid fog. The ambient surface temperature had plummeted to minus forty degrees, and toxic, freezing rain was encasing the valley below in thick, black ice.

DING.

[Surface Status: Extreme Atmospheric Instability.]

[Aethelgard Haven Internal Status: Structural Integrity 100%. Energy Reserves: Nominal.]

[Current Active Tenants: 628.]

"They're starting to move," Sylvia said, sliding into the chair across from him. She wore a neat knitted sweater over her collar, a warm cup of herbal tea clutched in her hands.

Han raised an eyebrow, closing his system tab. "The refugees?"

"The survivors from the nearby border garrisons," Sylvia corrected, pulling a small notebook from her pocket. "Our seismic sensors picked up heavy foot traffic about two miles down the valley road an hour ago. A convoy of luxury carriages and armored transport wagons tried to reach Mount Aethelgard, but the mountain pass was completely blocked by frozen mudslides."

"And Leon’s Sky Fortress?" Han asked, taking a sip of his water.

"It didn't crash, but it's grounded," Sylvia said, a faint, cold humor in her voice. "The floating mana-core shorted out during the initial sky break. The fortress settled hard onto the jagged peak of Mount Aethelgard, half-tilted and completely stripped of power. They have no geothermal heat, their hydroponics were smashed in the impact, and their wooden barracks are catching fire from overloaded heating crystals."

She looked at Han, her sharp grey eyes fixing on his face. "Radiant Leon and Duchess Seraphina are currently sitting in a frozen stone box with five hundred aristocrats, zero hot water, and three days of emergency rations."

Han cut a piece of steak, chewed slowly, and swallowed it. "Sounds like they built a very expensive freezer."

Before Sylvia could reply, a loud, buzzing chime echoed from the main entrance control console down the hall.

Vance’s voice came crackling through the wall-mounted inter-com unit. "Han? Sylvia? We’ve got an incoming audio transmission on the long-range barrier wire. Someone’s at the outer perimeter gate."

Han wiped his mouth with a napkin and stood up. "Let's see who's early."

Five minutes later, Han, Sylvia, and Vance stood inside the heavy, armored security control room situated right behind the main blast doors.

On the central visual monitor—fed by an insulated optical lens embedded high in the basalt cliff face—a group of thirty people was huddling together against the howling, white-out blizzard outside.

They weren't commoners. They wore expensive, snow-dusted silk coats, velvet-lined cloaks, and heavy silver brooches. Their faces were pale, their lips turning a violent shade of blue as they shivered violently, clutching thin fur blankets that offered almost no protection against forty-below acid snow.

At the front of the group stood Overseer Vane’s former chief assistant, a young guild bureaucrat named Julian, who was desperately pounding a frozen iron rod against the speaker plate mounted next to the sealed vault door.

"Please!" Julian’s voice crackled through the control room speakers, muffled by the roaring wind. "Is anyone inside?! Open the gate! We are official representatives of the Paragon Guild and the Royal Land Authority! Open this door immediately!"

Sylvia looked at Han. "That’s the regional guild registry crew. They were supposed to inspect the sky fortress baseline today."

Han walked up to the mic console, flipped the broadcast switch, and leaned in.

"You're standing on private property," Han’s voice boomed out of the external speaker at the gate, clear, warm, and entirely unbothered by the storm. "Identify yourselves and state your business."

Outside, Julian gasped, falling to his knees in the deep snow as he looked up at the smooth, snow-free basalt archway. The heat radiating from the mountain’s internal geothermal seals had created a warm ten-foot zone right in front of the door, keeping the immediate threshold dry.

"Han?!" Julian shrieked into the mic wire, his voice cracking with desperation. "Is that you?! Han! It’s Julian from the central office! Open the blast gate! The blizzard is freezing our carriages! The horses are dead! We need shelter!"

"Sector 99 is a private residential sanctuary," Han replied calmly. "We don't offer emergency charity to guild officials."

"Charity?!" A wealthy noblewoman behind Julian shoved her way to the speaker, her expensive fur coat dripping with melting acid slush. "Do you know who I am?! I am Lady Beatrice of the House of Vane! My brother is Master Overseer Vane! Open this gate right now, you filthy digger, or I’ll have the Royal Guard strip you of this mountain!"

Han leaned back from the mic and looked at Sylvia. "Should I turn off the speaker?"

"Let me handle this," Sylvia said smoothly, stepping up to the console. She flipped her binder open and pressed the mic button.

"Lady Beatrice," Sylvia said, her voice dripping with ice. "This is Sylvia, former Chief Administrator of the Guild Inspection Bureau. Under Astral Property Law, Section 4, Paragraph 12—which your brother helped draft—all state authority and land titles are suspended during a Class-EX National Emergency. Sector 99 operates under absolute subterranean sovereignty."

Outside, Lady Beatrice froze, her jaw hanging open in utter shock as she recognized Sylvia’s voice.

"Sylvia?!" Beatrice stammered, her voice suddenly losing its arrogant edge as a gust of freezing wind whipped through her thin hair. "Sylvia, please... it’s freezing out here! My fingers are numb! We have gold! We can pay you!"

Sylvia looked at Han, raising an eyebrow. "They brought gold."

Han took the mic back. "Gold is worthless out here, Lady Beatrice. It doesn't burn, and you can't eat it."

"Then what do you want?!" Julian sobbed into the speaker, his body shaking uncontrollably as he clutched his frozen hands together. "We’ll give you anything! Weapons! Mana-crystals! Land deeds! Just let us inside!"

Han stared at the monitor screen, looking at the thirty freezing aristocrats who had spent their entire lives treating workers like dirt.

"Our tenant policy is very simple," Han said, his voice echoing out into the storm. "We have twenty standard economic units available on Level 1. Entry requires a binding five-year labor contract, absolute obedience to sanctuary rules, and full surrender of all personal magical assets upon entry."

"Five years of labor?!" Beatrice shrieked. "I am nobility! I don't work!"

"Then you are free to walk to Mount Aethelgard," Han said flatly. "It's only twelve miles through forty-below acid snow. I hear Lord Leon’s sky fortress has lovely views."

He reached out his hand to turn off the switch.

"WAIT!" Julian screamed into the wire, throwing himself flat against the warm stone threshold. "I accept! I’ll sign! I’ll shovel dirt! I’ll do anything! Just open the door!"

Behind Julian, half of the guild clerks immediately dropped their heavy bags of gold and scrambled to sign on, weeping in relief. Lady Beatrice stood alone in the howling wind, her face pale, her hands trembling as she looked back at the pitch-black, freezing valley behind her.

Ten seconds passed.

Slowly, agonizingly, Lady Beatrice fell to her knees in the dry dirt before the door, her tears freezing on her cheeks.

"I... I’ll sign," she whispered, her pride completely shattered. "Please... let me in."

Han looked at Vance. "Open the outer airlock gate, Level 1. Have the intake team strip their magic items, give them warm clothes, and assign them to the hydroponic fertilizer squad."

"Fertilizer squad?" Vance grinned, shaking his head. "They're gonna love hauling compost."

"They wanted to live," Han said, stepping away from the console as the heavy blast doors groaned open to let the first desperate refugees in. "Now they get to work for it."

Outside the sealed gates of Sector 99, a blinding wall of acid snow whipped through the pines, but the real storm was marching down the eastern pass. Two hundred paladins of the High Guild Guard moved in rigid formation through the six-foot drifts. Their heavy plate armor, once polished to a mirror shine, was caked in ice and black mud. Behind them, steam hissed from three massive, horse-drawn siege crawlers equipped with runic battering rams.At the head of the column rode Overseer Vane, bundled in three layers of marten fur, his face blue from the bite of the sub-zero chill. Beside him, mounted on a glowing mana-beast, was Commander Ignatius Radiant Leon’s right-hand enforcer."There it is," Vane pointed a trembling, gloved finger toward the mountain face.Even through the swirling blizzard, the entrance to Sector 99 stood out like a beacon. Chapter 12: The Price of WarmthWithin forty-eight hours of the surface collapse, the intake bay of Level 1 looked like a processing hub for a fallen empire. The initial trickle of frozen aristocrats had turned into a steady stream. Guild clerks, minor merchants, regional tax collectors, and disgraced knights were arriving at the outer gates of Sector 99 by the dozen. They stumbled out of the howling, sub-zero blizzard with frostbitten fingers, ruined clothes, and heavy bags of gold that no longer held any power.Inside the climate-controlled intake center, Sylvia sat behind a sleek, reinforced steel desk, flanked by four heavily armored dwarven guards wielding runic shock-batons."Next," Sylvia called out, her voice crisp and entirely devoid of warmth.A middle-aged man in a soaked, ice-crusted silk robe stepped forward, trembling violently. It was Chief Assessor Markos, the man who had personally signed the eviction orders for hundreds of blacklisted laborers in the capital jus

Chapter 10: The Calm Before the FrostThirty days remained. On the surface, the heat of late summer held the kingdom of Aethelgard in a golden, drowsy grip. Markets buzzed, harvest festivals were planned, and the nobility gathered at Mount Aethelgard to celebrate the final keystone laying of Radiant Leon’s Sky Fortress. Banners fluttered against the blue sky, promising an era of unprecedented glory and magitech safety.Four hundred feet below, inside Sector 99, nobody was celebrating. The air on Level 4 was thick with the ozone tang of high-density mana. Standing at the center of a massive, amphitheater-like cavern, Han watched as the final divine barrier anchor—a forty-foot pillar of solid, runic-etched Mithril-Iron -- was lowered into the bedrock by four heavy automated cranes.CLANG.The ground shook as the pillar locked into place. Deep beneath the floor, the ancient geothermal ley-node thrummed in response, sending a visible wave of pale blue light surging up the pillar's r

Chapter 9: The Fifty-Day MarkBy day fifty before the Mana Collapse Sector 99 had quietly disappeared from the news and that was exactly how Han wanted it.To the world the sudden silence from the old obsidian mine meant one of two things: either the reckless kid who bought it had gone broke or the cavern had finally caved in on him. Overseer Vane, now demoted to a desk in the basement of the Paragon Guild’s administrative wing, was too terrified of further embarrassment to bring it up again. Chapter 8: The Breach in the DeepWith Sylvia taking over the supply logistics and tenant administration, the efficiency of Sector 99 spiked overnight. While Sylvia established a strict inventory tracking system and drafted standardized lease agreements for future tenants, Han directed his full focus downward. Sixty days remained until the Great Mana Collapse, and Level 3 the designated War Foundry and Outer Defense Grid was still raw, untamed cavern stone.Deep in the subterranean depths, four hundred feet below the surface, the natural ambient temperature dropped sharply. Unlike the warm geothermal veins powering Level 2, Level 3 bordered the unmapped subterranean abyss, a vast network of ancient, dark tunnels where ancient mana-beasts nested in the dark.Han stood at the edge of the newly excavated Level 3 staging floor.
