Chapter 67: RHEA RHOADES
Understood. Johnny didn’t need her to say it twice. The moment the words left Rhea’s lips — slurred, warm, almost melting into his ear — something in him clicked. Maybe it was the alcohol. Maybe it was the adrenaline still thrumming in both their veins. Maybe it was the fact that she had just thrown her entire life on the line for him. Whatever it was, he scooped her up the way a man does when reason and instinct are at war — and instinct wins. Her soft laugh tickled his neck as he carried her out of the private bar and toward the elevator. She draped an arm lazily around his shoulder, her fingers tracing lazy shapes on his collarbone. Even half-conscious from exhaustion and too many bottles, she moved like heat incarnate. Every part of her was warm, pliant, alive. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. Sophie Green was standing there, a professional smile plastered to her face — except this time, it twitched. Just a little. Just enough to notice. Maybe it was jealousy.
Chapter 66: Where do u want to be
The bottles on the table were starting to look like a stubborn army—brown glass lined up, some empty, some half-full, some tipped over like they’d given up halfway. The Nebula’s dim purple lights danced across them, turning everything blurry at the edges. Johnny didn’t even know which number they were on anymore. Five… seven… nine… at some point counting stopped being useful. They weren’t drinking fast; they were drinking constantly.Quietly.Slowly.Like two people trying to drown the same demon. They talked about everything except the obvious. The weather. The terrible music the bartender insisted on playing. The weird guy at the corner who looked like he lived inside a backpack. Anything—anything but the thing that had dragged them here in the first place.Johnny could feel the unspoken words hanging over them like a cracked chandelier. One wrong move, it would fall. He didn’t want to bring it up. He didn’t want her to break all over again. Tonight wasn’t about answers or explanat
Chapter 66: VIP Treatment
“Wait—are we… actually going to the Nebula Hotel?” Rhea asked as Johnny made the turn toward the tall lit-up building.“Yeah. Why?” Johnny replied casually. “You hate the place or something?”“No,” she said quickly, “but just so we’re clear… ‘let’s have a drink’ isn’t code for ‘let’s have sex,’ right?”Johnny barked a short laugh.“Yeah, I know. That wasn’t the intention.”But then the devil perched on his shoulder whispered something stupid, and he let it slip out anyway:“…unless you want—”“God, no—” she cut in before he finished.“Right,” Johnny muttered, smirking to cover the embarrassment clawing through him.Inside, he was mentally punching himself in the throat. What the hell was he thinking? She just blew up her marriage, torched her career, and walked away from everything for his sake—and that was the first thing his brain chose to suggest?Idiot.Idiot, idiot, idiot.“So why are we going to the Nebula Hotel?” she pressed.Johnny shrugged. “Because it’s probably the only est
Chapter 65: Are you in love with him
Rhea’s jaw tightened until a faint tremor ran down her cheek. She didn’t trust her voice yet—didn’t trust anything inside her. Her thoughts spun in a frantic, breathless circle, colliding with memories she hadn’t asked for.Johnny’s face came first. That stupid grin he wore even when half the world was trying to kill him. That spark of insanity that made him unpredictable, dangerous, frustrating beyond reason. The way he acted like rules didn’t apply to him.The way he stepped into danger with the kind of reckless bravery she’d only ever seen in soldiers with nothing left to lose. And then there were the other moments. The ones she pretended didn’t matter.Moments where he blinked and something soft slipped through the cracks in his chaos.A flash of humanity.A look that made her feel… seen. Not admired, not feared, but recognized. Her stomach twisted. She remembered the scalpel at the club. The blade at the boss’s throat. The blood on Johnny’s hands. His voice—wild, unhinged, danger
Chapter 64: The Choice is yours
“Gerald, you can’t be serious,” Rhea said, her voice cracking between disbelief and anger.“Did I stutter?” Commissioner Kane replied, every syllable clipped, sharp, and final.Rhea stared at him, searching his face for even a trace of softness. There was none. He looked at her with the same cold professionalism he reserved for criminals caught on tape with murder weapons in hand.“You’re suspending me?” she repeated, desperate, like maybe saying it out loud would make the ridiculousness of it sink into his skull. “On what grounds? Why? What exactly did I do to get suspended?”Kane didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t have to.“Going rogue,” he said. “Endangering civilians. Torturing a suspect.”“What the hell are you talking about?” Rhea snapped. “That man is not a suspect, and you know it.”“The law,” Kane said calmly, “states he is innocent until proven guilty.”“Oh, please,” she shot back, throwing her hands up. “What more proof could you possibly need? He literally admitted half of
Chapter 63: Super hearing
Chapter 63And just like that, Johnny found himself back at the Pantheon Valley Police Station. One second he was staring at the Commissioner, Rhea, and the shaking boss…The next, he was sitting on a narrow metal bench inside a holding cell. And worst of all, his cell was directly opposite Commissioner Kane’s office. The glass was soundproof.Johnny could see everything.Rhea pacing. Kane standing stiff. Papers on his desk scattered like debris after an argument. Rhea gesturing. Kane cutting in. Her shoulders tightening. Him refusing to turn toward her.But Johnny couldn’t hear a damn thing.“Fantastic,” he muttered, leaning his head back against the cold wall. “A front-row seat and no audio.”He sighed—a long, frustrated exhale that fogged the glass for a second. If he could hear even a pinch of what they were saying, it would make tonight so much easier to navigate. He hated being blind. He hated being deaf even more. Then, out of nowhere, the familiar blue flicker washed across hi
