Chapter 1: The Fodder's Awakening

The air in the dungeon smelled like copper and rot. It was a thick, cloying scent that clung to the back of Kirill’s throat, making every ragged breath a struggle.

Kirill’s eyes fluttered open. His head felt like it had been split by a greataxe. He blinked, the blurry shapes of the cavern ceiling slowly sharpening into jagged, obsidian-like rock. He wasn't in his bedroom. He wasn't even in his own world.

He tried to push himself up, but his arm buckled. He landed face-first in the muck, a wet thwack echoing in the oppressive silence. He groaned, rolling onto his back, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Ugh... what the hell? Where am I?"

He stared at the sky—no, the cavern roof. Where were the lights? Where were the people? He looked to his left and his breath hitched. A body lay sprawled a few feet away. It was Kael, the squad leader, his face frozen in a mask of terror. Beyond him lay Elara, her limbs twisted at unnatural angles.

"Guys? Hey, wake up. This isn't funny. Kael? Elara?"

No one answered. The silence was heavy, broken only by the drip-drip-drip of water from a stalactite somewhere in the darkness. Kirill scrambled backward, his palms scraping against grit and dried blood.

"What happened? Did we get ambushed? Where did the others go?"

He looked at his own hands. They were trembling, coated in a thick, dark grime that he knew with terrifying certainty was dried blood. The memories began to bleed back into his consciousness—a flash of a failed raid, the sound of retreating footsteps, the cowardly voice of the party scout shouting, “Leave him, he’s already dead!”

"They left me," Kirill whispered, his voice cracking. "Those bastards really just... left me here to die."

He stood up, swaying as the world tilted. His stomach churned. He looked around the desolate chamber. Their equipment was scattered everywhere—shattered shields, broken staves, and rusted blades half-buried in the dungeon floor.

"So, that’s it? I’m supposed to just rot here while they go home and tell everyone I was a hero who died fighting?"

He reached out, grabbing a discarded, broken longsword from the dirt. The steel was notched and jagged, useless for anything other than a scrap pile. He clutched it, needing something to ground himself. As his skin made contact with the cold, pitted metal, a translucent blue interface flickered into existence before his eyes.

Inventory (0/10)

Kirill blinked, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. The box remained.

"What is this? Is this a hallucination? Am I having a stroke?"

Item detected. Storage capacity: 1/10. Consume item for Energy? [Y/N]

"Consume? What, am I supposed to eat the sword? That's ridiculous."

He stared at the screen, his mind reeling. Energy? Is this some kind of game mechanic? He took a deep breath, the cold steel biting into his palm.

"Fine. Whatever. If I’m losing my mind, might as well see how far down the rabbit hole goes."

He focused his intent on the ‘Yes’ icon, feeling a strange tug in his gut, like a thread being pulled from his core.

"Okay, let’s see what happens. Do your worst."

The sword in his hand didn't move into an inventory slot. Instead, the metal began to dissolve. It turned into a fine, glowing grey dust that swirled toward his palm, vanishing into his skin as if absorbed by his very pores. A warmth flared up his arm, settling deep into his chest.

"Wait, what? Where did it go? Did I just... delete the sword?"

Material processed. 0.5% Energy stored. Matter Extraction unlocked.

"Matter Extraction? What’s that supposed to mean?"

He looked around, desperate. He spotted a pile of rubble—a cluster of mana-infused crystals that had been crushed during the fighting. He approached them, his legs feeling steadier now, the weird warmth in his chest acting like a second heartbeat.

"Okay, let’s try this again. If that was the inventory, what does the extraction do?"

He hovered his hand over a chunk of jagged crystal. A new prompt appeared, more detailed than the last.

Target: Mana-infused Quartz. Sub-menu: Matter Extraction. Extract Essence Core? [Y/N]

"Essence Core? Is that like... a battery? Or a power-up?"

He tapped the screen with a trembling finger.

Extraction initiated. Efficiency: 85%.

The crystal began to hum. It turned white-hot, then crumbled into fine sand. A faint, glowing sphere no bigger than a marble manifested in the air before him. He caught it instinctively. It was pulsing with a soft, azure light.

"Whoa. No way. That actually worked."

He looked at the marble, then back at the empty space where his party had once stood. The fear that had paralyzed him earlier was being replaced by a cold, hard resolve.

"If they think I’m dead, maybe I can use that to my advantage. I’m not dying in this pit. Not today."

He tucked the crystal shard into his pocket, his hand clenching into a fist.

"Alright, let's see how much of this junk I can turn into power. If I'm going to climb out of here, I'm going to need every scrap I can find."

He turned toward the tunnel entrance, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the darkness. The dungeon was massive, a labyrinth of death, but for the first time, it didn't look like a tomb. It looked like a gold mine.

"Wait... what was that?"

A low, guttural growl vibrated through the floorboards—or, rather, the stone floor. It was a sound he knew all too well from the stories. A Stalking Horror. The kind of creature that hunted by scent, that didn't just kill—it toyed.

"Oh, come on. Are you kidding me? A Stalking Horror? Right now?"

He froze, his breath hitching as the smell hit him—a mixture of sulfur and wet fur. It was close. Too close.

"Great. Just my luck. I survive the party, I survive the wounds, and now I’m a midnight snack for a stray monster."

He looked back at the interface, his heart rate spiking.

"Listen, system, or whatever you are—if you’ve got any other tricks, now would be a really good time to show them."

He crouched low, pressing himself against the damp stone wall, his ears straining against the silence. The growl came again, louder this time, followed by the wet sound of claws scraping against rock. It was circling. It knew exactly where he was.

"Whatever," he muttered, his fingers tightening around the remaining bits of gear in his reach. "If you want a meal, you're going to have to work for it."

The shadow in the tunnel deepened, and two glowing, pale eyes ignited in the darkness, fixed directly on him. The air grew cold, the scent of the beast overwhelming. Kirill didn't back away. He stood his ground, the faint pulse of the essence core in his pocket acting as his only warmth in the encroaching dark.

"Come on then," Kirill whispered, his voice barely audible, laced with a dangerous edge. "Let's see what you’re made of."
