The good news was that Ezra had not passed out. He was simply drained after burning through every last drop of his mana in the fight.

He gave himself a moment to let the world stop spinning, then sat up, crossed his legs, and closed his eyes to meditate and pull his energy back.

A few steps away, the short man crouched over the carcasses, carving into them and pulling crystal cores free with practiced hands. Every so often he glanced back at Ezra sitting motionless.

"This human. How can a kid h

"Attack!" the Goblin Lord bellowed.Six elite goblins carrying spears broke toward Ezra. Six more armed with swords went straight for Orwin. Orwin drew his blade and set his stance without a word. The spear goblins reached Ezra fast. Much faster than the standard soldiers. They lunged in unison, all six weapons coming at him at the same angle. He stepped back, barely managing to clear them."Without my mana, this is going to hurt," he thought. "Casting Estravos Maxus might not have been the best idea."They came again before he could breathe. Spears at his stomach. He raised his sword and caught them, but the force behind the strikes pushed him back nearly two full steps, boots scraping across the stone floor. "These things hit hard," he thought.A crackling sound cut the air. A bolt of lightning screamed toward his face. He twisted on one foot and it grazed his cheek. The heat from it stung immediately. He leaped back to avoid a spear aimed at his legs. His boot landed on the shaft

  • Chapter 33: Which You Cannot

"Who are these that dare to infiltrate my sanctum?" the Goblin Lord roared from his throne. His voice carried through the entire chamber. "You will pay for this insolence with your lives!" Ezra tilted his head. "It speaks the human tongue. That's a first." The Goblin Lord barked a command in a guttural language Ezra did not recognize. Every goblin in the room raised its weapon. "Exterminate them!" Fifty soldiers surged forward in a screaming wave. "Earth spell, Sink!" Ezra drove his palms toward the floor. The ground beneath the charging vanguard went soft. Twenty goblins sank into the stone like it had become liquid, pulled under before they could react. "Sink liquefies the Earth beneath their feet," Ezra thought. "Another goodie I picked up from the book." The Goblin Lord watched twenty of his soldiers disappear into the ground. His amusement faded. The remaining thirty leaped over their sinking comrades and kept coming. "Wind spell, Wind Blade!" Razor-sharp cre

They moved into the cave without a sound.Luckily for them, there was no door to worry about. The entrance was wide open so they slipped inside and kept quiet. The interior was small. Much smaller than it looked from outside. A solid stone wall stood directly ahead of them, blocking the path completely."This is the right place," Orwin said quietly. "I could bet my gear it." He ran his hand along the rock face and studied the cave walls around them."It is the right place," Ezra said. "I can tell there's some sort of enchantment cast on it. It feels very familiar, almost like I've used it myself."He began moving along the small perimeter of the cave, eyes scanning the floor and walls."I knew I was right," his eyes widened with excitement. "This are the same illusion runes I put up when I first got here. How do goblins know this magic? Are they working with a mage? Or are they Outworlder mages?" He pushed the thought aside. "Right now I just need to find the anchor.""What are you lo

  • Chapter 31: Not Interested

It was morning already and Ezra was out at first light. He sat on a nearby stump while the forest started to wake up around him, pulling a strand of his newly red hair into view in the pale light and staring at it."Well, now we have a plan on what to do and what we're dealing with. But how exactly do I explain this hair to my mum when I get back home," he thought."Ha. You're such a baby," Noir's voice landed in his head like a dropped stone."So you're awake," Ezra said."Familiars do not require sleep."Ezra stood and moved into a small clearing a short distance from the cave entrance. "Good to know. Noir, I have something to ask you.""Well go on.""I can tell you're very strong. You even said it yourself that you're the strongest of your kind. You've also fought the Outworlders and survived." Ezra continued, trying to keep his tone level. "I want you to spar with me. I need to bridge the gap between where I am and where I need to be. And right now, you're the only one who can ac

The sky burned orange over a dead world.Thick mist rolled across cracked, barren ground that stretched endlessly in every direction.Massive beasts prowled through the fog. Their monstrous bodies moved freely across the wasteland. But they were not alone.Cloaked figures walked among the creatures. Each figure wore flowing black robes and a mask made of dark obsidian. They carried weapons of every shape and size. The beasts did not attack them, instead they moved together as if held together by a bond.Scattered across the broken land stood ancient structures. Some were crumbling ruins. Others were tall, dark towers that pierced the orange sky.One building stood above them all.A colossal castle rose from the center of the wasteland. A gigantic serpent was coiled tightly around its stone walls with shimmering blue scales that glowed beneath the orange light. Two massive horns crowned its head. Its enormous jaw twitched as it watched the horizon. Huge folded wings rested against its

"And what exactly do you mean by that?" Ezra asked. The wolf sighed. It padded slowly toward him and shrank as it walked. By the time it stopped, it was back to puppy size, sitting directly at his feet and staring up at him."How can you call yourself a mage and don't understand what I mean?" it said. "After that whole fight, I expected more from you.""I don't understand. So explain."The wolf sighed again."As I said before, I'm not some mindless beast. I am a familiar and as such I'm drawn to mages naturally. That is how I noticed what you were the moment I felt your mana. It is not something we choose. It simply happens."The wolf continued."Familiars of my ranking do not bond with just anyone. We seek mages who are powerful enough to match us because strength is the only thing that matters. That is why I fought you. I needed to see what you actually had before I made any decision." It paused. "Based on our fight, I would put you at 3-star. Maybe higher."Ezra scratched the back
