Chapter 7: Dancing with the Enemy
"Uh... ladies," Aether squeaked, offering a weak, terrifyingly nervous smile. "Can we interest you in some very high-grade, very aesthetic glitter?"
Nyxara did not answer. Shrouded in shifting shadows, she lunged forward, her silver daggers flashing with a lethal, high-pitched hum.
"Down, Aether!" Calista barked.
She drew her silver rapier with her left hand, parrying Nyxara’s strike with a sharp, deafening clash. Sparks flew, illuminating the dim apothecary.
"Hey! Watch the daggers, lady!" Aether shouted, ducking behind Calista.
"Quiet, thief!" Nyxara spat, her blades pressing hard against Calista's rapier.
"Wait, I feel a—" Aether gasped, his chest swelling. "A-A-Achoo!"
A massive, violent explosion of hot-pink glitter erupted from Aether’s mouth. The sparkling pink cloud blasted directly into Evelina’s face.
"Ah! My eyes!" Evelina shrieked. She dropped her dual-bladed glaive, stumbling backward and rubbing frantically at her glittering eyelids. "It burns! Why does it smell like artificial strawberries?!"
"Calista, keep her busy!" Aether sneezed again. "Achoo!"
"I am trying, but we are literally chained together!" Calista yelled. Her right arm violently jerked as Aether recoiled from his sneeze, throwing off her balance. She barely blocked another swift swipe from Nyxara’s daggers. "Nyxara, stop! We did not steal your leaves!"
"Then why are you drinking from Sylvan's cups?" Nyxara hissed, her eyes locking onto the empty clay vessels.
"It is just chamomile!" Sylvan cried out, waving his arms frantically from behind his oak counter. "I swear on my license! I used the last of my own personal stock to suppress his curse! They did not touch your harvest!"
Nyxara paused, her cold eyes darting from Calista's determined face to Aether, who was currently sniffling and wiping his nose with his sleeve. "Is this true?"
"Yes, it is true," Calista said, lowering her rapier but keeping her stance defensive. "We came here seeking a cure. We did not steal from your gardens."
Evelina finally blinked the glitter away, her face covered in pink sparkles. "If you didn't steal them, then who did?"
"Nobody stole them, you hot-headed solar gardeners," Sylvan sighed, stepping out from behind the counter. "You sold them! Don't you remember?"
Evelina blinked, her fiery red hair settling. "We did?"
"Yes," Nyxara muttered, sheathing her daggers with a quiet, irritated sigh. "I forgot. We consigned the entire harvest to the grand charity gala."
"The gala?" Calista asked, her brow furrowing. "Which gala?"
"The one hosted by Amaris Kartikasari and Selene Mahadewi," Nyxara explained. "It is happening tonight at the celestial manor. The leaves are being held as a premier auction item."
"Oh, perfect," Aether groaned, leaning his head against Calista's shoulder. "A high-society party. My favorite place to be dressed like a dumpster diver."
"We have to go," Calista said flatly.
"Like this?" Aether waved his chained hand, rattling the bright pink handcuffs. "And in these clothes? We'll be thrown out by the security gargoyles before we even reach the foyer."
"I can help with that," Sylvan said, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I keep a wardrobe of unclaimed items from wealthy clients who couldn't pay for their potions. Let's see what we can find."
"Absolutely not," Calista said, staring at the midnight-blue gown Sylvan presented. "It has no armor plating. It is tactically useless."
"It's a gala, Calista, not a siege," Aether said, rolling his eyes as he adjusted the collar of a sleek black tuxedo that fit him surprisingly well. "Besides, you look spectacular. Midnight blue really matches your stern, unyielding eyes."
Calista looked down, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It is... acceptable. But how do we hide the handcuffs?"
"Simple," Aether said, pulling a long, elegant silk sash of matching midnight blue from Sylvan's rack. "We wrap this around our joined wrists. If anyone asks, we tell them it's the latest high-fashion statement from the upper realms. A binding sash representing eternal devotion."
"That sounds incredibly foolish," Calista grumbled.
"High fashion is always foolish, darling," Aether grinned. "Trust me. They'll eat it up."
As Aether stepped closer to wrap the sash, his fingers brushed against hers. He froze for a second, his playful smirk faltering. She was so close. The scent of her lavender hair oil was intoxicating, and without the dusty trench coat between them, he could feel the warmth of her body. His heart gave a strange, nervous flutter.
"Are you alright?" Calista asked, her voice unusually soft. She looked at his hand, her own chest tightening. For some reason, the rapid beating of her heart had nothing to do with the threat of the curse.
"Fine," Aether cleared his throat, quickly securing the knot of the sash. "Just making sure it's tight. Shall we?"
"Let's go," she said.
"Keep your head down," Calista whispered as they slipped past the golden arches of the grand ballroom. "The guards are scanning for unregistered magical signatures."
"Hard to keep my head down when the ceiling is literally made of woven starlight," Aether whispered back, looking up in genuine awe. "Amaris really knows how to throw a party."
"Focus, Aether," Calista hissed, nudging him. "The auction items are kept in the east wing vault. We need to find a way in."
Suddenly, a loud, melodic chime echoed through the ballroom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, deities and guests of honor," a smooth voice announced over the magical amplification system. "It is time for the traditional couples' waltz. Participation is mandatory for all guests on the main floor."
"Oh, no," Calista muttered, looking around as the crowd began to part, leaving them standing right near the center of the dance floor.
"Well, looks like we don't have a choice," Aether said, offering his free hand with a dramatic bow. "May I have this dance, Goddess?"
"I don't dance, Aether," she whispered fiercely.
"You do now, or we get arrested," he replied, pulling her closer.
Their bodies collided gently. Calista placed her left hand on his shoulder, her right hand gripping his left inside the wrapped silk sash. The pink chain beneath the fabric hummed, sending a warm, comforting wave of energy through their physical bond.
"Remember the rhythm," Aether murmured, his eyes locking onto hers. "Left, right, step."
"I know the rhythm," she whispered, her heart racing as they began to glide across the polished marble floor.
"You're actually really good at this," Aether smiled, spinning her gracefully.
"I told you, I have military ballroom training," she said, a small, genuine smile slipping onto her lips. "Though... you aren't terrible either."
"I'm a god of aesthetics, Calista. Moving beautifully is literally in my job description."
They moved in perfect, effortless harmony. The crowd around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the warmth of their joined hands and the steady beat of the music. For a moment, Calista forgot about the curse, the High Court, and the stolen leaves. She only saw the brilliant gold of his eyes.
"Aether..." she began.
"Yes, darling?"
"Don't make me regret this," she whispered.
"Never," he promised.
Suddenly, the music swelled to a dramatic crescendo. The surrounding dancers stopped, stepping back to form a wide circle around them.
"Look at them," a voice whispered from the crowd.
"Who are they? Their coordination is flawless!"
From the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom, Amaris Kartikasari and Selene Mahadewi smiled down at the floor.
"What a magnificent display of unity," Amaris announced, her voice echoing through the hall as she gestured toward the couple. "Selene, my dear, wouldn't you agree?"
"Indeed," Selene nodded, her eyes shining with amusement. "Let us honor our most coordinated couple tonight. Guards, shine the spotlight on them!"
A blinding, brilliant beam of golden light snapped directly onto Aether and Calista, illuminating them in the center of t
he ballroom.
"Oh, great," Aether muttered, his smile freezing as the entire room stared at them. "We're the main event."

The Salt Draught
Chapter 20: The Salt DraughtThe workshop smelled intensely of scorched vinegar, wet parchment, and a variety of dried herbs that had clearly passed their expiration date several decades ago. Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. His left shoulder has been flickering like a dying tallow candle for the past
Cargo and Conscience
Chapter 19: Cargo and Conscience"If you sneeze one more cloud of pink glitter, Aether, I am going to tie you to a ballast stone and drop you straight into the harbor," Calista hissed, her whisper razor-sharp as she pressed her back against the damp, salt-crusted wall of the timber warehouse."That is a remarkably harsh penalty for a physiological malfunction entirely caused by your estate's exploding magical artifacts," Aether replied, his voice a breathy whisper that fluttered past his lips like dry leaves. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit.""They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, he
The Sinking Docks at Midnight
Chapter 18: The Sinking Docks at Midnight"I am telling you, Calista, my silhouette is an absolute necessity for social engineering," Aether wheezed, his voice carrying the airy, rattling cadence of a man whose lungs were currently composed of ninety percent decorative dust. "If we send you alone, you’ll just interrogate the dock master about his tax compliance. If we send Nyxara, she’ll murder him before he can tell us where the salt crates are. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. You are not negotiating with dock thieves while half of your body looks like an exploded hourglass."Nyxara, walking two paces ahead with her
Master Vane’s Workshop
Chapter 17: Master Vane’s WorkshopThe heavy wooden door of Master Vane’s establishment did not have a bell; it had a rusted iron knocker shaped like a scowling gargoyle that looked as though it wanted to bite off whoever was foolish enough to touch it.Nyxara didn't bother knocking. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged
The Broker’s Toll
Chapter 16: The Broker’s Toll"If the river-rats ask," Nyxara whispered, her daggers vanishing back into their leather sheaths with a soft, practiced click, "you are two terminally ill nobles traveling to a country sanatorium. If they look at your arm, Aether, try not to disintegrate until we are past the toll-gate.""I make no promises regarding my structural integrity," Aether wheezed, leaning heavily against Calista’s side as they stepped out of the damp limestone crawlspace and onto the rotting wooden planks of the lower canal. The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot."Quiet," Calista hissed under her
The Alchemist of the Cisterns
Chapter 15: The Alchemist of the CisternsNyxara didn’t turn around when the heavy oak door groaned against its iron hinges, her silver daggers moving with a rhythmic, rasping hiss against the whetstone. The damp air of the abandoned wine cellar clung to her leather coat like a second skin, smelling heavily of vinegar, wet stone, and old ambition."You're making too much noise," Nyxara muttered, her dark eyes flicking sideways toward the huddled figures on the floor. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe. He was slumped sideways against Calista’s shoulder, his entire left arm reduced to a semi-transparent haze of amber mist that flickered erratically with every pulse of his heartbeat. "It was an artistic expression of respiratory distr
