Chapter 6: The Sparkling Sneeze Sanctuary
"Aether! Aether, stay with me!" Calista’s voice lost all of its cool, military composure, cracking as she fell to her knees beside him on the debris-strewn floor.
She slid her left arm beneath his head, her fingers instantly coming away wet. Not with blood, but with a strange, pulsing violet residue that hissed against her skin.
"Hey," Aether whispered, his eyelids fluttering. His face was dangerously pale, the skin around his collarbones webbed with angry, purple veins. "Don't look so sad. It ruins your... your very stern, very attractive aesthetic."
"Shut up! Just shut up and let me heal you!" Calista pressed her hand against his chest, trying to channel her solar magic. But the pink handcuff around her right wrist violently rattled, rejecting her energy with a harsh, high-pitched buzz. "No, no, no... why won't it work?"
"Because... because I think I'm about to..." Aether’s chest swelled. His eyes went wide. "Oh, no."
"What? What is it? Is the poison spreading?" Calista’s heart hammered against her ribs, panic clawing at her throat. "Aether, talk to me!"
"I'm going to... Ah... Ahhh..."
"Aether!"
"ACHOO!"
A deafening, high-pitched sneeze erupted from Aether, accompanied by a violent vortex of shimmering, hot-pink glitter. The blast wave hit Calista dead in the face, coating her silver hair, her cheeks, and her eyelashes in sparkling neon dust.
She blinked, spitting out a mouthful of shiny pink flecks. "Did you... just sneeze?"
"Yes! Achoo! Oh, gods, the tickle... achoo!"
Every time Aether sneezed, a fresh cloud of sparkling pink dust burst into the air, accompanied by a miniature shockwave that sent nearby pebbles rattling across the concrete.
"You're not dying," Calista muttered, wiping a thick layer of glitter off her forehead. "You're just... decomposing into craft supplies."
"I am suffering, Calista! Achoo! My divine nostrils are on fire!"
"What is happening here?" Theron’s booming voice cut through the sparkling fog. The sun-god was currently standing over a dazed Cassian, his golden chestplate scratched but his hair still immaculate. "Did we win? Why is everything so shiny?"
"Theron, we need to move," Calista said, struggling to haul Aether to his feet. The fallen god was limp, his legs shaking as another sneeze shook his entire frame.
"Wait, but I haven't delivered my victory speech!" Theron protested, striking a pose. "The citizens of this realm must know of the morning sun's—"
"The warehouse is collapsing, you idiot!" Calista yelled, pointing to the ceiling. Huge cracks were spreading across the concrete beams, showered in purple sparks from the overloaded runic cage. "Cassian's portal is destabilizing! We have to go!"
"But my hair!" Theron cried.
"Leave him!" Aether wheezed, draping his arm over Calista's shoulder. "Achoo! Seriously, leave him, his ego will cushion the fall!"
Calista didn't hesitate. She gripped Aether tightly around the waist, pulling his weight against her as they stumbled toward the exit. Behind them, Theron let out a highly undignified shriek as a massive chunk of concrete smashed onto the spot where he had been standing.
"Step together, Calista!" Aether gasped, his face buried in her neck. "Rhythm! Remember the rhythm!"
"Sappy, sappy, make us happy," Calista muttered under her breath, her boots clicking in perfect sync with his clumsy steps.
The pink chain hummed, light and weightless once more, allowing them to sprint out of the warehouse just as the entire roof came crashing down in a thunderous roar of dust and concrete.
They tumbled into the narrow, rain-slicked alleyways of the old city district, the cold night air hitting them like a physical blow.
"Where are we going?" Aether panted, his body shivering. "Achoo! Oh, great, I think I just localized a rainstorm of sequins over that dumpster."
"Sylvan Daneswara," Calista said, her eyes scanning the dark streets. "His apothecary is hidden in this sector. He's an eccentric, but he knows ancient curses better than anyone in the High Court."
"Sylvan?" Aether groaned. "The guy who tries to cure everything with dried mushrooms and aggressive lecturing?"
"Do you have a better idea?"
"No," Aether admitted, leaning heavily against her. "But if he tries to make me eat dirt, I'm sneezing on his face."
"Just keep walking," Calista said. She felt a strange, tight warmth blooming in her chest as Aether’s head rested against her shoulder. She tried to brush the feeling away, telling herself it was just adrenaline, but her grip on his waist only tightened. "We're almost there. Don't you dare pass out on me."
"I wouldn't dream of it, darling. Achoo! Ugh, my throat is like sandpaper."
They navigated the twisting alleyways until they reached a dilapidated wooden door tucked behind a sprawling ivy trellis. A small, brass plate on the door read: Daneswara’s Curiosities & Remedies. Enter at Your Own Risk.
Calista didn't bother knocking. She kicked the door open, the heavy wood slamming against the inside wall.
"Sylvan!" she called out.
The interior of the apothecary was a chaotic jungle of hanging dried herbs, bubbling glass cauldrons, and shelves overflowing with glowing jars. Behind a counter made of dark, polished oak, a middle-aged man with wild, silver-streaked hair and thick spectacles jumped in surprise, dropping a handful of blue roots.
"Calista?" Sylvan gasped, clutching his chest. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? And... what in the cosmos is that smell? Is that... artificial strawberry and ozone?"
"Help," Aether croaked from Calista's shoulder. "A-A-Achoo!"
A massive pink cloud erupted, instantly coating Sylvan’s immaculate counter, his spectacles, and his face in glowing glitter.
Sylvan stood frozen for a three long seconds. He slowly reached up, took off his glasses, and wiped a thick smear of pink sparkles off the lenses. "Ah. Aether Valerian. I see you haven't changed a bit."
"It's a curse, Sylvan," Calista said, dragging Aether to a wooden stool. "He took a dark runic shard to the chest. The necrotic energy mutated with the binding relic on our wrists."
"A runic shard?" Sylvan’s expression turned serious. He rushed over, grabbing Aether’s chin and forcing his mouth open. "Let me see. Tongue out."
"Ahhh," Aether complied.
"Fascinating," Sylvan murmured, tapping Aether’s chest. "The necrotic poison should have rotted your core in minutes. But because your core is already empty, and because you are bound to a high-tier Goddess of Justice by... wait, is that the Shackles of Sappy Souls?"
"Yes," Calista said, her face flushing slightly. "It reacted with our magic."
"I told you it was a classic!" Aether sneered. "Achoo!"
Sylvan leaped back, narrowly avoiding another blast. "Incredible! The curse transformed the necrotic decay into a localized, highly volatile spiritual sneeze. Essentially, Aether’s body is trying to expel the dark magic through his respiratory system, but the pink cuffs are converting that expulsion into aesthetic energy."
"Can you cure it?" Calista asked, her voice tight with worry. "He's getting weaker. His temperature is dropping."
"Of course I can cure it," Sylvan scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. "But the cure requires a very rare, very specific ingredient. The sacred glowing tea leaves of the celestial valley."
Calista's heart sank. "You're joking. Those leaves only grow in one place."
"Yes," Sylvan smiled weakly. "The private greenhouse of Evelina Candrani and Nyxara Pusparani."
Aether groaned, burying his face in his hands. "Oh, perfect. The twin guardians of the solar gardens. Evelina will try to incinerate me, and Nyxara will try to feed me to her shadow hounds."
"They are incredibly protective of their crop," Sylvan agreed. "They sliced the last guy who tried to steal from them into sixteen neatly measured pieces."
"I can negotiate with them," Calista said, her jaw setting. "I am an officer of the High Court."
"They hate the High Court, Calista," Sylvan pointed out. "Especially you. Didn't you fine them last year for illegal zoning of their astral soil?"
Calista opened her mouth, then slowly closed it. "That was... a minor administrative dispute."
"They're going to kill us," Aether sighed. "Achoo! Great, now my left ear is ringing."
"Until we can get the leaves, I can give you a temporary suppressant," Sylvan said, rushing to a bubbling pot in the corner. He poured a glowing, golden-green liquid into two small clay cups. "This is divine chamomile. It will soothe the spiritual irritation and suppress the sneezes for an hour or two. Drink up."
Aether grabbed the cup with his free right hand, sniffing it suspiciously. "Does it taste like dirt?"
"Just drink it, Aether," Calista said, grabbing her own cup and swallowing the warm liquid in one gulp.
Aether sighed and drank. Instantly, the cold, hollow ache in his chest seemed to soften, replaced by a soothing, gentle warmth. The constant, agonizing tickle in his nose faded.
"Oh," Aether breathed, stretching his neck. "Oh, that is actually amazing. No sneeze. I feel... normal."
"Do not get comfortable," Sylvan warned. "As I said, it only buys you—"
SMASH!
The large, stained-glass window of the apothecary suddenly shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.
Through the dust and debris, two figures dropped gracefully onto the floor.
On the left stood Evelina Candrani, her fiery red hair whipping around her face, her hands wrapped around a massive, glowing dual-bladed glaive. On the right, shrouded in shifting, pitch-black shadows, was Nyxara Pusparani, her silver daggers humming with a quiet, lethal frequency.
Evelina leveled her glowing glaive straight at Sylvan’s throat.
"Alright, you back-alley potion seller," Evelina snarled, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "Who stole our sacred glowing tea leaves?"
Nyxara stepped out of the shadows, her cold eyes locking onto the two empty clay cups in Calista and Aether’s hands.
"Sister, look," Nyxara hissed, her voice like grinding stones. "The thieves are already drinking our harvest."
Calista’s hand went straight to her rapier. Aether slowly raised his hands, offerin
g a weak, terrifyingly nervous smile.
"Uh... ladies," Aether squeaked. "Can we interest you in some very high-grade, very aesthetic glitter?"

The Salt Draught
Chapter 20: The Salt DraughtThe workshop smelled intensely of scorched vinegar, wet parchment, and a variety of dried herbs that had clearly passed their expiration date several decades ago. Master Vane stood over a sputtering brass burner, his hair standing on end as though he had recently experienced a minor electrical discharge, glaring at the three intruders with rheumy, bloodshot eyes."You brought it?" Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. His left shoulder has been flickering like a dying tallow candle for the past
Cargo and Conscience
Chapter 19: Cargo and Conscience"If you sneeze one more cloud of pink glitter, Aether, I am going to tie you to a ballast stone and drop you straight into the harbor," Calista hissed, her whisper razor-sharp as she pressed her back against the damp, salt-crusted wall of the timber warehouse."That is a remarkably harsh penalty for a physiological malfunction entirely caused by your estate's exploding magical artifacts," Aether replied, his voice a breathy whisper that fluttered past his lips like dry leaves. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. "Besides, my sparkling disposition is the only reason those guards out by the main crane are currently distracted by a sneezing fit.""They are distracted because you managed to weaponize your own structural collapse," Nyxara muttered from the other side of the loading bay door, he
The Sinking Docks at Midnight
Chapter 18: The Sinking Docks at Midnight"I am telling you, Calista, my silhouette is an absolute necessity for social engineering," Aether wheezed, his voice carrying the airy, rattling cadence of a man whose lungs were currently composed of ninety percent decorative dust. "If we send you alone, you’ll just interrogate the dock master about his tax compliance. If we send Nyxara, she’ll murder him before he can tell us where the salt crates are. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. You are not negotiating with dock thieves while half of your body looks like an exploded hourglass."Nyxara, walking two paces ahead with her
Master Vane’s Workshop
Chapter 17: Master Vane’s WorkshopThe heavy wooden door of Master Vane’s establishment did not have a bell; it had a rusted iron knocker shaped like a scowling gargoyle that looked as though it wanted to bite off whoever was foolish enough to touch it.Nyxara didn't bother knocking. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged
The Broker’s Toll
Chapter 16: The Broker’s Toll"If the river-rats ask," Nyxara whispered, her daggers vanishing back into their leather sheaths with a soft, practiced click, "you are two terminally ill nobles traveling to a country sanatorium. If they look at your arm, Aether, try not to disintegrate until we are past the toll-gate.""I make no promises regarding my structural integrity," Aether wheezed, leaning heavily against Calista’s side as they stepped out of the damp limestone crawlspace and onto the rotting wooden planks of the lower canal. The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot."Quiet," Calista hissed under her
The Alchemist of the Cisterns
Chapter 15: The Alchemist of the CisternsNyxara didn’t turn around when the heavy oak door groaned against its iron hinges, her silver daggers moving with a rhythmic, rasping hiss against the whetstone. The damp air of the abandoned wine cellar clung to her leather coat like a second skin, smelling heavily of vinegar, wet stone, and old ambition."You're making too much noise," Nyxara muttered, her dark eyes flicking sideways toward the huddled figures on the floor. "The Regulators outside are using hounds this hour. If your luminous friend here decides to sneeze another cloud of glitter, we’re all hanging from the iron spikes by midnight.""It wasn’t a sneeze," Aether whispered, though his voice sounded thin, like wind whistling through a cracked pipe. He was slumped sideways against Calista’s shoulder, his entire left arm reduced to a semi-transparent haze of amber mist that flickered erratically with every pulse of his heartbeat. "It was an artistic expression of respiratory distr
