Chapter 16: The Broker’s Toll

"If the river-rats ask," Nyxara whispered, her daggers vanishing back into their leather sheaths with a soft, practiced click, "you are two terminally ill nobles traveling to a country sanatorium. If they look at your arm, Aether, try not to disintegrate until we are past the toll-gate."

"I make no promises regarding my structural integrity," Aether wheezed, leaning heavily against Calista’s side as they stepped out of the damp limestone crawlspace and onto the rotting wooden planks of the lower canal. The air here tasted of stagnant bilge water, sulfur, and unwashed desperation. "Though I do feel like my current translucent aesthetic really brings out the swamp gas."

Calista kept her right hand locked tightly around his good wrist, her fingers white-knuckled and aching from the continuous strain. Her left wrist was bound to his by the shimmering, infuriatingly indestructible silk sash that refused to tear, burn, or rot.

"Quiet," Calista hissed under her breath, her eyes darting across the murky water toward a makeshift wooden platform suspended over the locks. Three burly men with scarred faces and thick iron hooks dangling from their belts were lounging around a smoking brazier, watching them with predatory interest. "And stop leaning on me. You're heavier than you look when you're half-mist."

"That’s just my gravitational ego," Aether muttered, his voice dipping into an unconvincing rasp before he let out a short, breathy cough that sent a tiny puff of violet sparks floating into the damp night air.

Nyxara cursed softly under her breath, grabbing Aether’s elbow and yanking him forward. "Walk straight, thief. If the Toll-Master sees you leaking magic, they won't just charge us double—they’ll fillet us for bait."

"Charming neighborhood," Aether observed, his golden eyes scanning the rusted winches and hanging lanterns of the smuggling dock. "Do they validate parking?"

The Toll-Master, a massive man with a braided beard and a missing eye covered by a greasy leather patch, stood up lazily as they approached the gate. He rested a heavy iron-hooked pole against the wooden railing, blocking their path. His gaze swept over Calista’s mud-stained military jacket, lingered on Nyxara’s scarred leather boots, and finally fixed upon Aether, whose entire left side was currently flickering like a dying candle in a draft.

"Private locks, travelers," the Toll-Master rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. "No passage after midnight without the iron mark or a heavy purse of silver. And looking at your friend there... he looks like he's about to evaporate into a stiff breeze."

"We have business across the basin," Calista said, stepping forward with an authoritative stiffness that she had spent years refining in the upper military academy. She kept her right hand casually near the hilt of her rapier, though her muscles screamed in protest. "Let us through. We aren't looking for trouble."

The Toll-Master spat a stream of dark tobacco juice into the canal water below. "Trouble finds you down here, little captain. And that man of yours... he's leaking magic all over my boardwalk. That leaves a residue. The Regulators check for residue."

"He's just recovering from a minor alchemical mishap," Nyxara intervened smoothly, stepping into the dim amber light of the brazier. Her face remained a mask of cool indifference as she reached into her coat pocket. "We don't have silver. But we have something better."

Nyxara pulled out a small, velvet-lined leather pouch and untied the drawstrings. She tipped it slightly, letting the faint, incandescent glow of high-grade glitter stolen from the estate vault spill out into her palm. The fine, crystalline dust caught the firelight, shimmering with a brilliant, shifting spectrum of sapphire and gold that instantly transfixed the three river-rats.

The Toll-Master’s single eye widened. He leaned forward, sniffing the air as if he could smell the sheer value of the contraband. "Where'd you get high-spire grade? That’s noble-district contraband."

"We found it," Nyxara said flatly, her fingers closing back over the dust before the man could reach for it. "Enough to buy our way across your rotten bridge and keep your mouth shut if the Regulators come asking."

The Toll-Master stared at Nyxara for a long, tense moment, the muscles in his thick neck working. The two guards behind him shifted uneasily, their eyes darting from the glowing pouch to Aether, who was currently doing a remarkably poor impression of a solid human being.

"Pass," the Toll-Master grunted finally, stepping aside and jerking his chin toward the fog-shrouded footbridge that spanned the central sluice. "And take your ghost for a walk before he dissolves into my floorboards. I don't want to explain to the harbor master why there's a pile of sparkling dust where a man used to be."

"Your concern is touching," Aether murmured, offering the burly man a mock salute with his good hand as Nyxara shoved him forward onto the wooden bridge. "Truly, the hospitality of the lower waterworks warms my freezing, non-existent heart."

"Shut up and move," Calista snapped, dragging him across the creaking planks as the Toll-Master turned back to his brazier.

The bridge swayed violently under their boots, the brackish water swirling twenty feet below them with a low, ominous roar. Every step Aether took sent a faint, musical chime rippling up the silk sash, his physical form fighting a losing battle against the volatile resonance of the estate artifact still humming in his bloodstream.

"You're shaking," Calista noted quietly, her voice losing its sharp military edge as she felt the tremors running down his arm.

"It's just the ambiance," Aether whispered back, his humor faltering for a brief, vulnerable second as he stumbled against a rusted guide-rail. His left shoulder flared into a bright burst of orange light, casting long, dancing shadows against the fog. "Though if I do completely turn into mist, do me a favor and don't let Nyxara use me to polish her daggers."

"I heard that," Nyxara’s voice drifted back from the front of the bridge as she checked the perimeter of the dark alleyway leading into the lower cisterns. "Though considering how much trouble you've caused, it wouldn't be a bad trade."

"See?" Aether wheezed, leaning most of his weight onto Calista’s shoulder as they reached the far side of the bridge and stepped onto the damp cobblestones of the lower district. "Even the assassin appreciates my multi-purpose utility."

"You aren't utility, you're a liability," Calista said, though she didn't push him away. She tightened her grip on his arm, bracing him against her side as they plunged deeper into the winding, shadow-drenched alleyways of the city’s underbelly. "Can you walk, or am I carrying you?"

"I can walk," Aether insisted, though his feet barely seemed to touch the stones. "Provided we don't encounter any more checkpoints, armed guards, or particularly aggressive rats."

"No more checkpoints," Nyxara said, pausing beside a heavy iron-studded door set into the moss-covered brick wall of an old municipal drainage station. She pulled a heavy iron key from her belt and jammed it into the rusted lock with a sharp twist. "Just Master Vane. If he can't fix your little sparkling condition, nothing will."

The heavy door swung inward with a shriek of protesting hinges, revealing a flight of steep, winding stone stairs descending into the humid, subterranean depths where the disgraced apothecary made his home. A wave of scorched vinegar and dried lavender washed over them, thick and cloying in the dark air.

"After you, Captain," Aether murmured with a weak, lopsided grin, gesturing toward the black abyss of the staircase. "Try not to drop me. I bounce less than I used to."

Calista didn't laugh, but as she pulled him across the threshold and into the dark, her fingers instinctively tightened around his bound wrist, hol

ding him fast against the uncertain world waiting below.

Vane demanded, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he pointed a stained wooden spatula directly at Nyxara’s nose. "Do not tell me you dragged yourselves through half the lower cisterns just to ask about my rheumatism. I want the salt. The blue salt from the third dock warehouse, specifically crate seventy-four. Do you have it?"Calista hoisted the heavy canvas sack onto a rickety wooden table, the contents clinking together with a dense, muted weight. "We have it. Now stop shouting and look at him. He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. Only my staggering charm can bridge the diplomatic divide.""Your charm is currently leaking out of your elbow," Calista snapped, her fingers tightening around his good arm with a grip that threatened to bruise. Her silver divinity hummed just beneath her skin, a low, steady thrum of warmth trying to anchor his dissolving form against the damp chill of the night. "You are staying in the shadows, Aether. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room. "Do you think I run a public thoroughfare for draft animals and vagrants? The draughts ruin the condensation coils!"A diminutive, incredibly ancient man emerged
