The ringing of his phone broke into the quietness of the morning. Jalen stirred from sleep, one hand reaching for the phone without even opening his eyes.

When he finally looked at the screen, his heart sank. It was his mother. He sighed, already sensing the storm that was about to hit.

"Hello, Mummy," he greeted, trying to mask the tiredness in his voice.

But before he could say anything else, the voice on the other end exploded.

"Jalen! What is this nonsense I'm hearing again? Another court case? With that same useless Brooks family? Jalen, haven't you had enough?"

Jalen sat up, wiping his face as the flood of her words poured into his ears. He could almost picture her; standing in the middle of her living room, her wrapper tied firmly, hands akimbo, phone pressed hard to her ear, voice rising with each word.

"Mummy, please calm down," he said softly, knowing fully well that calming her down was going to be a mission on its own.

"Don't tell me to calm down! Do you know the number of

Andrew’s voice was sharp over the phone, filled with rage that could shatter glass. “That bastard thinks he has won? No. I will drag him down with my bare hands if I have to. The next time I strike, it will be loud. It will be brutal.”He paced the tiled floor of the living room, his face hardened, veins throbbing on his temple. “I don’t care what it takes. Jalen must feel the weight of what he did. He made me rot in jail for years. He killed the one man that fought for me to the end when others gave up on me. He disgraced our family name. I won’t forgive him for that.”Tiana was descending the staircase, a file in her hand, when she heard her brother’s raised voice. She froze halfway, eyes narrowing as she listened more closely.“Andrew!” she called sternly the moment she stepped into view.He turned sharply, caught off guard. “How long have you been standing there?” he asked, his tone defensive.“Long enough to hear your nonsense,” Tiana replied, stepping into the living room fully.

Outside the courtroom, the air was heavy with mixed emotions. The victorious cheers from Tiana and Andrew’s legal team still lingered in the atmosphere, while quiet murmurs from the disappointed crowd drifted in the background. But nothing could have prepared Jalen for what he saw next.Just a few steps away, near the far corner of the parking lot, stood Aisha. And she wasn't alone. She was standing with Carlos. His rival. His enemy. The man who had just won a silent war inside the courtroom, in collaboration with the Brooks. The man who had sworn to make him pay as revenge for his father's demise.Jalen paused mid-step, his heart skipping. His eyes squinted, trying to understand what was going on. They were talking, but their voices were low. Their body language suggested they weren’t exchanging pleasantries. It looked more like an argument.Carlos’s hand moved in an exaggerated motion, pointing at the ground. Aisha folded her arms, her posture defensive. Then suddenly, she turned s

  • Chapter 108: No Evidence, No Case

Jalen was about closing for the day. The clock on his desk blinked past 6:45pm, the lights in the hallway outside were beginning to dim, and Fiona had already packed up for the day. A quiet calm was beginning to settle over the building. His fingers rested on the edge of the desk, his tablet screen dark, untouched for minutes. His thoughts had been far from numbers or contracts. Since morning, his mind had only circled the same question over and over — who murdered those men? And why?He was reaching for his briefcase when the door creaked open. The moment his eyes met the figure that stepped in, the calm shattered.Inspector Dennis.Of all people, this was the last face Jalen wanted to see right now.The look on Dennis’s face was unreadable — a mix of fatigue, irritation, and perhaps a tinge of frustration. He stepped in, closing the door behind him, ignoring Jalen’s sharp gaze.Jalen rose slowly, the veins on his neck firming. “You have to be kidding me.”“I don’t have time for g

  • Chapter 107: Blood Bath

Monday morning came too soon. The sun had barely climbed the sky when Jalen arrived at the office, but he was already dressed, seated, and deep in discussion with his assistant, Fiona. The lines on his forehead were softer than usual. His eyes, though tired, had a distant softness that hadn’t been there in weeks. Something had shifted inside him and Fiona noticed. She didn’t know what happened over the weekend, but something told her it wasn’t just rest or sleep. There was a calmness to him, almost too calm, like someone who had finally found a patch of peace after wandering for too long in chaos.“So, about the contracts from the Eastside partners,” Fiona began, pointing to the tablet on the desk. But Jalen’s mind wasn’t in the numbers. His eyes drifted towards the window as her voice faded. He wasn’t listening anymore.Friday night had done something to him. That night with Aisha, the feel of her skin, her quiet sighs, the way her presence seemed to fill every gap Sonia’s death ha

Immediately they entered Jalen's apartment, Aisha caught sight of something that left her curious - the picture frame, hung beside the television. It was the picture of Jalen and Sonia on their last date two days before her demise. "That's Sonia," Jalen said, as if he knew what she was going to ask. "She died in a car accident two months ago."He partially lied. He was trying to avoid too much questions that could awaken old wounds. "Oh, my goodness!" Aisha gasped. "I'm so sorry." Jalen simply nodded. "Thank you."Something about this lady seemed to wash him off his feet, yet there was another thing about her he couldn't lay hold on, exactly - something awful about her.The more he thought about it, the more he tried to brush it off, believing God had given him a second chance to love again."Cup of coffee or something strong for dinner?" Jalen asked, changing the topic and gesturing at the couch for her to seat."Coffee will do, thank you." She responded with her charming smiles

The pall of stress had settled over Adesins Corporation like a heavy fog, but today, on a Friday, there was a delicate lift in the atmosphere. Jalen sat at his oak desk, a stack of finalized contracts spread before him. Negotiations with international investors, long-awaited, bore fruit. The numbers looked good. His phone buzzed incessantly—emails, congratulatory messages from his board, investor confirmations. It had been a long haul, and yet every affirmation felt like a small victory carving his path forward. But as the golden hour began to cast long shadows across the office floor, Jalen finally closed his laptop, leaned back in his chair, and swallowed a breath. It had been more than two months since his return, since his mother's abduction, since every betrayal, loss, and desperate fight for survival. He massaged his temples, chest tight. Today, he deserved reprieve. After a moment’s contemplation, he decided on the Orion Hotel and Suites—one of his assets he owned. He coul
