Chapter 11

The flames around Olivia and Alex crackled with unnatural fury, fuelled by dark forces beyond any magic the young student had yet encountered. Through the shimmering heat, Alex studied their hooded attacker, seeking any advantage that might turn the tide.

Beneath the concealing cowl, he glimpsed a face warped by bitterness and vengeance - it could only be Victoria, Olivia's former friend turned foe. All those years ago, some terrible act had twisted her soul and bent her talents to evil's purpose.

"You thought you could hide in this decaying temple forever," Victoria spat, malevolent glee twisting her features. "But I have claimed powers even you, great Olivia, could never imagine. With them, I will destroy all you hold dear!"

Dark bolts erupted from her outstretched hands but Olivia was ready, warding off the deadly blow with a burst of radiance. For now, her gifts matched those of her fallen sister - but Alex knew they were badly outmatched if this became a test of pure strength.
