The morning sun filtered through the high windows of the Ashworth drawing room, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air like suspended gold. It was a stark contrast to the gloom that usually permeated the mansion, but the tension remained thick enough to choke on. Kael sat in a high-backed leather chair that had only been forbidden to him yesterday, watching the three strangers who sat across from him with predatory interest.
Victor Ashworth stood by the hearth, his posture tight and unreadable, while Eleanor feigned to read a datapad in the corner, her eyes darting to Kael with fear and confusion.
The man in the center of the opposing couch leaned forward, his suit impeccably tailored and his smile practiced to perfection. This was Dean Morrison of Apex Academy, the most prestigious institution for awakened youth in the hemisphere, and he usually made people wait, but today he looked like a man trying to solve a complex puzzle with half of the pieces missing.
"We followed the broadcast of your duel last night with great interest, Mr. Ashworth," Morrison started, his voice smooth and professional. "It is rare to see a C-Rank Earth Awakener demonstrate such... Versatility versus an S-Rank opponent."
Kael placed his chin on his hand, his looked bored. "Dean Morrison, versatility is a polite word to describe what happened. Most people say it's impossible.
"Indeed they are," the woman on Morrison's left replied, her sharp-featured eyes seeming to examine everything they looked at. "Earth manipulation typically involves rigid structures and defense." What you did—liquefying stone, absorbing thermal energy, and forming compressed confinement fields—defies conventional elemental theory.
"I'm a quick learner," Kael explained simply.
Morrison chuckled, but it didn't reach his calculating eyes. "Humility is a virtue, but let's be honest. Apex Academy exists to develop the extraordinary. We believe that your particular earth element mutation signifies a huge evolutionary stride forward in awakened talents. "We want that evolution to occur within our walls."
Victor finally spoke from the fireplace, his voice bearing the weight of a business transaction: "Apex has never awarded an Ashworth scholarship before. We've always paid full tuition.
"This isn't about tuition, Victor," Morrison stated without turning away from Kael. "This is about potential. We are offering Kael a full ride. Tuition, accommodation and board, and access to our cutting-edge training facilities. In exchange, he will compete under the Apex brand in subsequent regional competitions."
Morrison was a retired A-rank mind awakener, and his comrades were high-level elementalists, but Kael was more interested in what they symbolized than in their power.
Apex Academy was a meeting place for the world's most powerful young awakeners, a concentrated collection of exceptional powers, high-ranking heirs, and prodigies.
To everyone else, it was a school, but Kael saw it as a smorgasbord.
"I have conditions," Kael stated, breaking the silence.
Eleanor shouted out loud from her corner, "You don't make conditions to Apex Academy, you ungrateful—"
"Quiet," Victor demanded.
Morrison did not blink. "Name them."
"I require unrestricted access to the academy archives," Kael listed, ticking fingers, "and I want a private training room that is not monitored by your security grid." And I want the ability to face upperclassmen regardless of year."
The scouts exchanged glances; the request for unmonitored training was worrisome, but the willingness to push older kids revealed arrogance that they could shape.
"Unusual requests," Morrison reflected, rubbing his fingers on his knee. "But not impossible." We can offer these privileges if you maintain a top-ten ranking throughout the year."
"Done," Kael murmured, getting up to shake Morrison's hand. As their skin met, Kael felt the Nexus stir in the back of his mind, hungry and eager, but he pushed the desire away. "When do I start?""
"The semester begins in three days," Morrison said, standing up. "Welcome to Apex, Mr. Ashworth." Please do not break too many of our students."
The Ashworth estate's medical wing smelled of antiseptic and flowers, a cloying mix that made Kael's stomach flip. He strolled past the nurses, who were now scrambling to unlock doors for him—the same personnel who had ignored him two days ago—and reached the private suite at the end of the corridor.
Luna lay in the center of a massive bed, hooked up to a machine that pumped a glowing golden fluid into her arm. The Advanced Celestial Life Essence was the most expensive substance on the planet, distilled from rare dungeon cores, and right now it was the only thing keeping his sister's lungs from collapsing.
Color had returned to her cheeks, and her breathing, which had previously been a desperate effort, was deep and rhythmic. She opened her eyes as he approached, smiled weakly.
"You look expensive," she said quietly, indicating to his new clothing.
Kael drew a chair close to the bed, the strain in his shoulders relaxing. "I look like a scholarship student. "Apex accepted me."
"Apex?Luna's eyes widened. "But that's where Darius goes." And all the other elites. "They will eat you alive, Kael."
Kael held her hand, being cautious not to touch the IV line; her skin felt warmer than it had in years. "Let them try. Luna, I am not the same person that I was yesterday. "I can handle them."
Luna scrutinized his face, her smile dimming somewhat, and squeezed his hand, searching his eyes with an intensity that made Kael want to look away. "I know you're not the same. I witnessed the duel. "I saw how you looked at Darius when you had him trapped."
"He deserved it," Kael murmured, his voice tightening unintentionally. "He was about to murder me. "He was going to let you die."
"I know," she responded softly. "I am not defending him. But, Kael... Your hands were once frigid, but they now feel like ice. And what about your eyes? Sometimes it appears that they are looking through me rather than at me.
Kael froze; he had no idea how much the void corruption was impacting his mood, so he forced himself to soften his expression and bring warmth back into his voice. "I'm just tired, Luna." It has been a long two days. It takes a lot out of a person to die and then come back.
"Just promise me something," she urged, holding his fingers tightly. "Promise me you will not lose yourself in whatever power you discover. I do not care about money or prestige. "I just want my brother."
"You have me," Kael assured, stooping down to kiss her forehead. "I'll be whatever it takes to keep you alive, Luna. Even if I have to destroy the rest of the earth to keep you warm."
She closed her eyes, the sedative in the therapy eventually taking her under. "Don't burn everything," she mumbled sleepily. "Just enough to see in the dark."
Kael sat with her until her breathing settled into a deep sleep, then watched the golden fluid stream into her veins, calculating the cost, time, and lives he would need to consume to keep the flow flowing.
"She stabilizes," the Nexus said in his head, its voice sounding like grinding stones. But this essence is only a delay; to cure her, you need power far beyond what this family can supply.
"I know," Kael said quietly to the empty room. "That's why we're going to Apex."
The entity continued, "The Academy is rich with potential," and Kael could feel its hunger vibrating in his marrow. Within its confines, I discern three S-rank signatures: a storm caller, a metal shaper, and another... something ancient. Excellent hunting grounds, my host.
Kael stood up and walked to the window, looking out over the large estate from which he had been exiled only yesterday. He saw the manicured gardens, the high walls, and the city skyline beyond, where Apex Academy stood like a fortress on the hill.
"We're not just going there to hunt," Kael remarked quietly, his reflection in the glass revealing a spark of violet in his irises. "Darius was only the appetizer."
He stepped away from the window, leaving the room where his humanity slept, and proceeded into the hallway's shadows. The predator was hungry, and school was about to begin.

The Combat Assessment Hall at Apex Academy was designed to intimidate. It was a fifty-meter-wide hexagonal arena surrounded by energy barriers capable of containing S-rank attacks, with tiered seating rising on all sides like a modern coliseum. Hundreds of students watched from above as Kael stepped onto the reinforced floor, his footsteps echoing through the cavernous space."Candidate Kael Ashworth," the proctor said over the PA system. "Opponent: Training Drone Model B-4." "The goal is to incapacitate or destroy."Across the arena, a humanoid construct of polished steel hummed to life. Its eyes glowed crimson as internal systems powered up, and Kael recognized the model immediately—a combat drone programmed with B-rank martial arts and energy projection capabilities, standard testing fodder for aspiring elites.The drone shot itself forward with hydraulic speed, closing the distance in seconds, and aimed a punch capable of breaking concrete right at Kael's head.Kael didn't flinch;

Chapter 6
As Darius summoned his power, the air in the ballroom became immediately arid, the temperature spiking until condensation vanished from the champagne glasses held by trembling guests. He stood with his arms spread wide, flames wreathing his tailored suit like a living cloak that licked at the ceiling frescoes without burning the fabric."I hope you enjoyed your brief resurrection," Darius murmured, his words distorted by the roar of the flames rising in his palms. "Because this time, there won't be enough left over to bury."Kael stood twenty feet away with his hands in his pockets, looking bored despite the S-rank threat looming before him. He could feel the vibration of the building's foundation through the soles of his shoes, the earth beneath the marble waiting for his command, but he knew stone alone wouldn't be enough to stop it."Less talking, more burning," Kael went on: "Some of us have schedules to keep."Darius's face twisted into a snarl of pure arrogance. He thrust his ha

The Ashworth Estate's Grand Ballroom sparkled like a diamond in the night, with crystal chandeliers hanging from vaulted ceilings, casting warm light on silk dresses and tailored suits that cost more than most citizens earned in a lifetime. Waiters weaved through the crowd, carrying trays of champagne and rare delicacies, weaving between the elite of society who had gathered to witness the coronation of the new heir.Darius Ashworth stood on the central dais, basking in the adoration. He looked every inch the golden prince, his smile practiced, and his S-Rank aura radiating a gentle warmth that kept the chill of the evening at bay. Victor Ashworth, beside him, looked proud for the first time in years, raising a glass to toast his only remaining son."To the future," Victor said, his voice echoing throughout the huge hall. "To strength. "To legacy.""To Darius!""The audience echoed, five hundred voices joined in sycophancy. The enormous oak doors at the far end of the ballroom swung wi

The first sense was hunger, not pain.It gnawed at the edges of Kael's consciousness—a deep, ancient emptiness that demanded to be filled. He gasped, his lungs inflating with a rush of cold air that tasted of disinfectant and decay. When his eyes opened, he saw swirling patterns of energy dancing in the darkness above him, rather than the sterile white ceiling of a hospital. When he tried to sit up, his hand slammed against the metal, and the sheet covering him slid away, revealing naked skin that looked wrong. The bruises from the fall were gone, and the broken bones Darius had shattered were whole again. But beneath his pale skin, faint veins of violet light pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat."Impossible," a voice whispered from the corner.Kael gently turned his head to see a man in green scrubs crushed against the far wall, his face drained of blood. He was a mortician, and his hands were shaking so fiercely that he dropped his tablet, shattering on the tile floor."The corpse,"
Chapter 3
Kael trembled in his thin shirt, clutching a single duffel bag containing all of his worldly things, at 2 a.m. He was meant to leave at daybreak, but security had woken him up early."Special instructions from Mr. Darius," the guard remarked, pushing him toward the roof access. "He wants to say goodbye personally."Kael stood on the edge, looking down at the city lights far below, which merged into neon streaks."Isn't this a beautiful view?"Darius emerged from the shadows with a glass of amber drink in his hand; he was not wearing a coat, and the cold didn't bother S-rank awakeners."What do you want, Darius?""Kael gripped the bag tighter. "I'm leaving. Isn't this enough?""Leaving?"Darius chuckled, swirling his drink." Oh, Kael. You are very naive. Leaving suggests that you have somewhere to go. "Leaving implies a future."He took a cautious sip."The father's disownment documents are detailed. No money. No connections. No name. You'll die on the streets in a week. Most likely, sta
