It was time.
The dawn of the new day had set Kael up and ready to make a move.
Yet he was filled with uncertainty, his eyes rolling from one angle to the other until they landed on Luna, staring at her with a narrow gaze.
“I will be fine, Kael. You don’t have to worry…” Luna whispered, attempting to hide the pain inside her.
“We already talked about this last night. You can go, I will be able to take care of myself…” She forced a smile, but that was barely enough to hide the true feeling that was simmering inside her.
Kael took a deep breath, and then he inched closer to her, his face dragged down by pain and annoyance.
“I wish I didn’t have to go, Luna. Who will take care of you when I am gone?” He asked the same question that he had been asking for a long time, tears welling in his eyes.
Luna sniffed, holding back her tears.
“You should go, Kael…” She whispered, and as though it was meant to be, the sound of a horn blared through the window, causing them to look toward it.
“I think that’s for you, Kael,” Luna whispered, still looking out the window.
By the time she withdrew her gaze from it, she couldn’t look at her brother, bending her face to the ground.
That made her tears drop, Kael watching as they trickled down, drenching her silk dress.
“I will be back, Luna. I promise…” Kael swore, and after hugging his sister, he picked up his backpack, the only thing he had to leave with.
It contained little of the things he knew he was going to need, yet he was sure to make due of it.
“Goodbye, Luna.” He waved at his sister with tears still in his eyes, and then he turned and walked away, staggering through his first steps.
He quickened his steps at first, but the moment he sighted the sleek black car parked in front of the building, he was forced to slow down.
He stared with uncertainty as he approached the car, eyes moving from one corner to the other.
“I don’t think that is for me…” He whispered, and then he stopped moving, gripped by strong and intense doubt.
The dean had promised that he was going to send someone to pick him up, but seeing the flashy and luxurious car parked in front of him, he had his doubts.
A few seconds later, the driver’s door opened, and Kael was forced to take a step backward, ready to flee just in case it was dangerous.
A middle-aged man dressed in a nice black suit alighted from the vehicle, refusing to get rid of his smile.
“You must be Mr. Ashworth…” He pointed at Kael while his smile was still intact.
Kael nodded, but on a second thought, he remained quiet.
“Maybe he is talking about my brother…” He whispered only to his hearing.
“Well, my name is Rodin, and Dean Morrison has sent me to bring one Kael Ashworth. He said he is very special to him.” The middle-aged driver chuckled with delight, staring at Kael with an anticipatory smile.
“That’s me…” Kael sighed heavily, and then a smile replaced his gloom.
“That’s me, Sir!” He increased the sound of his voice, waving at the driver with a smile he couldn’t resist.
“Very well…” Rodin nodded in satisfaction, and then he beckoned to him.
“Come on then, Mr. Ashworth. We have a long day to go, and we are almost losing the light of the day…”
Kael nodded, but as he approached the man, his words stuck inside his mind.
He could only imagine how long they were going to be on the road before arriving at their destination.
After all, it was still dawn, and the sun had barely risen.
Kael got himself comfortable inside the car, and in no time, Rodin hit the road, increasing the acceleration as they drew closer to the highway.
Kael looked back severally, even when he could no longer see his home from a distance.
He waited and waited, yet there was no guarantee that they were going to get to their destination soon enough.
“Mr. Rodin?” He turned to the driver who tilted his head to look at him.
“Yes, Mr. Ashworth? What is it?” The driver already looked like he knew what the young man was about to ask, yet he listened while his smile was still intact.
“How much longer do we have to go before we arrive at the Apex Academy?” Kael didn’t look like he was losing his patience, but he was eager to know the truth to his question.
Rodin cleared his throat, and then he responded with a whisper.
“Soon enough, boy. Just a little patience and we will be there.” He returned his gaze to the road, pretending not to have seen the unsatisfactory look on the young man’s face.
Kael sighed heavily, and he resolved to wait until they arrived at their destination.
Then it hit him that he had not really thought of what to expect.
His mind was lingering with so much uncertainty, and when he could no longer hold onto it, he was forced to lean forward, turning to stare at the middle-aged man whose attention was still on the road.
But it didn’t take so long for Rodin to notice that he was looking at him, forced to turn to him slowly.
“What is it?” He asked just before Kael looked away.
“I have a question, Mr. Rodin…” Kael managed to find his voice, and then he returned his gaze to the middle-aged man to be certain that he was still paying attention.
“Ask away…” Rodin said with a smile, listening even when he had returned his gaze to the road.
“What is Apex Academy like? What am I supposed to know?” Kael had tried to hide the nervousness in his voice, but it echoed alongside his questions.
Rodin took a deep breath, and then he turned to look at the young man again, his smile intact.
“Where is the fun in telling you, Mr. Ashworth? I think it is just better if you experience it yourself. Don’t you think so?”
Kael’s expression dropped, and even though that was not what he was expecting to hear, he nodded as though he was satisfied.
Sooner than later, he fell asleep, crashing on the cozy chair.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO“Yeah! Yes, Elvis. Let’s go, I am glad that you are in.” Kael chuckled excitedly, and Susie chuckled, extending the brightness of her face.“Well, I guess I am not the only one who needs to prove someone wrong, then,” Susie said, and then she nudged Kael who was right beside her, making him fake a smile while he struggled with the tension in his body.“Come on, guys. Let’s get going.” Elvis said, and then he turned to the Emerald Guild stand and started to walk toward it.Right before she joined Elvis, Susie looked at Kael, and she could see that he felt a little uneasy even though he tried to hide it.“Are you really sure about this, Kael? You know you don’t have to do this if you are not sure of it.”“I am fine, Susie. I am just a little bit nervous, but I will be fine.”“Okay. If you say so. Let’s go meet my father then.” Susie said with a smile on her face, and then she hastened her steps toward Elvis who had slowed down while he waited for them to catch up with

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE“Hey! Kael? Where the hell do you think you are going?” Elvis said loudly, hastening to catch up with him.“To the Emerald Guild, I want to join them.”“Are you insane? After everything we saw!” Elvis was shocked, but I didn’t look like Kael was joking.“Kael? Are you seriously trying to kill yourself or what? Didn’t you see the look on his face?”“Look, Elvis. My mind is made up, I want to join them, and none of that matters. I know he is mean and all of that, but I am only following my heart.”“What stupid heart?” Elvis blocked Kael, and when he tried to go through the other way, he stood in the way as well.“Let me go through, Elvis.”“Not a chance, there is no way I am going to let you hurt yourself, not in this life,” Elvis said with a firm resolve, but his words pissed Kael off.“I don’t have time for this, Elvis. Let me through.”“No! You would have to go through me first.” Elvis stood his ground, and the angry look on Kael’s face was not enough to make him b

CHAPTER THIRTY“Hey, man! Chill, everything is about to change, or should I say that everything is already changing for you. Today is a big day, and you should be happy. Put on your bright face, and let’s go get you a Guild.” Elvis said in an attempt to cheer Kael up, and it seemed as though his plan was working.“Thanks, Elvis.”“You are welcome, Kael,” Elvis said with a smile on his face, and then he looked down at Kael’s outfit, and his smile began to disappear gradually.“What’s wrong?” Kael asked, looking at his outfit as well.“Uh? We really should have gotten you changed. These look like they need some laundry.”“Is it that bad?” Kael panicked a little as he looked carefully at his outfit, and realized that Elvis was really right.“Relax, Kael. I don’t think anyone is really concerned about all of that, right now. You will be fine.”“Are you sure about that, Elvis? I could go change really fast and return.”“No! That won’t be necessary. Besides, I don’t think you would make it

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE“That’s really sad.” He said with a tone devoid of any form of remorse or sympathy, but Jess didn’t seem like she was surprised just like Kael and Elvis who had to struggle with the urge to gasp or speak up.“He is so mean.” Kael thought to himself, stealing glances at Ansel who refused to let go of the smirk on his face.“That’s's what you've always wanted, Ansel! She died because of what you did! I would never forgive you for this!” Susie said with an unshaken resolve, but her father seemed unperturbed by her words. He scoffed loudly, and then he sniggered without taking his eyes away from Susie who gasped at how nonchalantly he behaved.“Jess, someday you will learn that emotions make us weak. You have got to get rid of all of that hatred you have inside you if you really want to succeed in life. It’s pointless harboring all of that tension inside your body.” Ansel said with his smirk unshaken, and then he turned to look at Elvis and Kael one after the other.“I

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHTSeeing that he was up, Susie returned her hand to herself, and then she sighed softly, and looked at Elvis who couldn’t take his eyes off Kael even for a second.“Come on, guys. Let’s get going. By the way, you really have to tell me what I need to do, I have absolutely no idea what I am supposed to do.” Kael said as he walked toward the exit of the hall, while the two people behind him seemed so surprised at how fast his mood switched from being dull to being very proactive. They exchanged glances with each other, and it was very obvious that they had the same thoughts going through their minds.Kael walked for a few seconds, and when he noticed that his companions were not walking behind him, he stopped and turned to look at them.“Come on, guys! There is no time.” He said, and continued looking at them, waiting for them to start walking toward him.“Let’s go, Jess,” Elvis said to Susie the moment he realized that they had been standing for almost a minute. CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN“Now, what?” He asked with a low tone, causing Elvis to look at him, and suspend the clapping of his hands.“Now, we move to the arena to begin the selection process,” Elvis said, and then he continued clapping, cheering loudly, while the two people seated at both sides turned to look at him, wondering why he was so excited.“What do you seem so happy about this?” Kael asked almost immediately, and it seemed as if he had taken the words out of Susie’s mouth. She leaned forward to have a proper look at Elvis, and then she nodded.“Yes, Elvis. Tell us, a while ago, you didn’t seem so excited about all of this.” Susie added, still looking at Elvis, who was forced to stop clapping; then he turned to look at Kael, shortly before he moved his gesture to Susie.“Well, let’s just say I saw something that suddenly excites me,” Elvis explained, but his words only left the two of them more confused than they were already.“I hope whatever it is is worth it,” Susie said, and
