Lyon POV
"Drop the luggage here," Lyon said.
His voice cut through the dim silence of the modest two-bedroom apartment. The space sat on the twelfth floor of a plain concrete tower on the city's south side. No chandelier. No marble floors. Just clean hardwood and a wide, sunlit balcony facing the skyline.
Lancelot set the dark leather suitcase by the door. His massive frame almost blocked the hallway. "Young Master, this place is too small. The penthouse at the Grand Horizon is completely secured. My men have cleared all four surrounding floors."
"No," Lyon replied. His thin fingers clicked the wheel locks into place. "This apartment is registered under an offshore shell account. The Darlington family believes I am sleeping in an alley. Let them track my old public ID."
"Dean Darlington has already frozen your personal bank cards," Lancelot reported, stepping back with his arms folded. "They canceled your health insurance forty minutes ago."
Lyon didn't blink. His mind immediately mapped the financial flow. Dean thought cutting off a seventy-thousand-dollar allowance would starve him. Dean had no idea that forty-two percent of the Darlington Group's annual revenue flowed through a complex clearinghouse system Lyon built when he was nineteen.
Two years ago, when the Lin Group launched a hostile short-attack on Darlington stock, Lyon stayed up for four straight days in his wheelchair. He used three proxy funds to quietly absorb seven hundred thousand shares, neutralizing the raid before the board even smelled the blood. When Dean found out the crisis was averted, he celebrated by buying Nathaniel a sports car and giving Lyon a three-hundred-dollar gift card for groceries.
Last year, when a defective batch of surgical implants threatened to bankrupt the Darlington medical division, Lyon spent seventy-two hours straight in his basement lab. He redesigned the titanium locking mechanism, forged the regulatory compliance papers under an anonymous signature, and saved the family thirty million dollars in liability lawsuits.
Esther had slapped his face that night because he was ten minutes late serving dinner.
You useless cripple, her voice echoed in his memory, shrill and poisonous. All you do is sit in that chair while my Nathaniel works himself to death for this family.
A dull ache throbbed in his lower back, right where the spinal lesion sat. Lyon reached down, his fingers pressing into the lumbar spine with precise anatomical force. He felt the exact alignment of the damaged vertebrae. The nerve pathways were blocked, but the cellular tissue was still viable.
"Call Mandolin," Lyon commanded flatly.
"He is already downstairs, Young Master," Lancelot said. "He bypassed three Darlington security scouts on the freeway."
The front door opened quietly.
Mandolin walked in, wearing his plain black coat. Rain dropped from the hem of his jacket onto the mat. He didn't look like a butler anymore. His posture was rigid, his eyes sharp and lethal.
He walked straight toward Lyon's wheelchair, dropped to his left knee, and bowed his head until his forehead almost touched the footrest.
"Young Master Lyon," Mandolin said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. "The dragon has left the cage."
Lyon stared at the top of the old man's head. His expression remained totally flat. "Get up. I do not need rituals."
Mandolin stood, unzipping a heavy waterproof briefcase. He pulled out three thick folders tied with red string and laid them on the glass coffee table in front of Lyon.
"The Darlington family believes Nathaniel is the long-lost golden son," Mandolin began, his voice dropping an octave. "They ran a local DNA test three weeks ago at the St. Jude Community Clinic. What they do not know is that Oscar's father owns forty percent of that clinic's parent company."
Lyon reached out, his long fingers opening the first folder.
Inside was a high-resolution genetic sequence chart. The stamp at the bottom bore the official seal of the Central Forensic Institute.
"Nathaniel is not a Darlington," Mandolin said plainly. "He is an illegitimate child of the rival Morton family. The Mortons placed him in the Darlington household to execute an internal asset strip. Dean Darlington discarded his true flesh and blood for a viper sent to destroy him."
Lyon scanned the markers on the page. His high-functioning brain processed the base pairs in seconds. The match between Dean Darlington and Nathaniel was zero percent.
"Did my father verify the original sample?" Lyon asked.
"He was too blinded by pride," Mandolin replied. "Nathaniel brought him a forged report, and Dean accepted it without a single second test. He wanted a tall, walking heir so badly that he swallowed the hook whole."
[Camera Cut: In the grand dining room of the Darlington estate, Dean raised his wine glass to Nathaniel, laughing loudly while Nathaniel secretly sent a text message to the Morton patriarch under the table: The fool gave me full signature authority over the main treasury tonight.]
Lyon closed the first folder without a trace of anger in his eyes. "And the second file?"
Mandolin opened the leather binder. "The absolute transfer papers for L. Blackwood Medical Tech."
He slid a heavy gold-plated fountain pen into Lyon's hand.
"For ten years, you operated from the shadows," Mandolin said, his eyes glowing with reverence. "You designed seventy percent of the bio-prosthetic patents currently used in Northern continent hospitals. You created the cellular regeneration formula that every pharmaceutical giant is dying to buy. The market valuation of L. Blackwood has crossed twelve billion dollars."
Lyon looked at the document.
The paper listed three liquid accounts held at the Swiss Royal Bank. The total cash balance displayed across the bottom row was two point four billion dollars.
"The Darlington Group's total valuation is barely six hundred million," Mandolin added, a cold smile touching his lips. "They called you a parasite who ate their scraps. In reality, your private yield in a single quarter could buy their entire lineage three times over."
Lyon held the pen. He didn't sign immediately. He tapped the gold nib against his thumb, feeling the cool metal against his skin.
"Kelly is still live-streaming," Lancelot interjected, holding up a tablet.
On the screen, Kelly was standing inside a luxury nightclub booth, holding a bottle of expensive champagne. Oscar sat beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her neck, pulling her close.
"Look at this, everyone!" Kelly yelled into the phone camera, her voice high and slurred. "My ex-boyfriend is probably sleeping under a bridge right now! He thought he could keep me tied to his wheelchair! A broken man who can't even stand up! Oscar just bought me a diamond bracelet to celebrate my freedom!"
Oscar leaned into the frame, grinning arrogant. "If any of you see a crippled guy begging near the southern highway, give him a dollar! Tell him it's from Oscar Enterprises!"
The chat section scrolled with thousands of mocking comments.
Useless trash.
Kelly made the right choice. Imagine being a fake heir for twenty years!Lancelot's knuckles popped as his hands clenched into fists. "Young Master, give the order. I will have Oscar's legs broken before midnight. I will tear down Kelly's family business by morning."
"No," Lyon said. His voice was icy, smooth, and completely quiet.
He placed the pen on the contract and signed his name in sharp, angular strokes: L. Blackwood.
"A fast execution is mercy," Lyon said, turning his head toward the window. The city lights reflected in his dark pupils. "When a man builds a house out of straw, you do not kick it down immediately. You let him build the roof. You let him invite his friends inside. You let him believe he owns the world."
Mandolin bowed deeply. "What are your instructions for the Darlington Group?"
"Nathaniel will try to access the logistics database tomorrow morning to finalize the new supply contract with the Lin Group," Lyon stated flatly. "He thinks my private access code is still active."
"Is it?" Mandolin asked.
"I locked the root system three minutes before I left the mansion," Lyon said. "Every time he inputs a command, the system will execute a silent sell-off of their short-term commercial paper. By noon tomorrow, their working capital will drop by thirty percent."
[Camera Cut: In the Darlington executive office, Nathaniel sat at Lyon's old desk, pouring a glass of scotch while typing on the keyboard. A green loading bar flickered on the screen, completely masking the background execution of an automated margin call.]
"And Kelly?" Lancelot asked.
"Kelly's family runs a small medical distribution firm," Lyon said, his finger tapping rhythmically on his wheelchair armrest. "They rely on the L. Blackwood regional sub-license for forty percent of their inventory. Cancel it."
"Immediately?"
"No," Lyon replied, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Wait until her father signs the expansion lease tomorrow morning. Let him commit his entire family savings. Then cut the supply line."
Mandolin took the signed contracts and placed them back inside his briefcase. "Young Master, Dr. Jessica from the Central Research Hospital has sent three urgent messages to your private encrypted terminal. The preliminary trials for the neural repair serum are complete. She needs your personal signature to begin the human clinical phase."
Lyon unlocked his wheels and rolled toward the small desk in the corner of the room. "Tell her I will review the laboratory data at six tomorrow morning."
"Yes, Young Master." Mandolin bowed again. "Also... there is one more thing."
Mandolin reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy black iron key attached to an unpolished wooden box. He placed it carefully on the desk beside Lyon's tablet.
"What is this?" Lyon asked, not touching the box.
"Your grandfather left this in my custody five years before he passed," Mandolin whispered, his tone suddenly extremely grave. "He told me that if the Darlington family ever expelled you, I was to hand this to you on the night of your exit."
Lyon stared at the dark wood. The box had no keyhole. Its surface was carved with intricate, ancient medical symbols that matched no modern surgical design.
He reached out his right hand, his fingertips touching the rough wood.
The moment his skin made contact with the surface, a sharp, burning sensation shot straight up his thumb, piercing through his wrist and traveling directly into his spine.
Lyon didn't pull his hand back. His heart rate spiked from sixty to ninety in a single beat.
Deep within his crushed lumbar vertebrae, a strange, intense heat flared up—a sensation he hadn't felt in fifteen years. It was as if a dormant needle of pure energy had suddenly woken up inside his dead nerves.
A low, metallic click echoed from inside the seamless wooden box.
The lid slid open on its own by half an inch.
Inside lay a single, obsidian surgical needle resting on black velvet, alongside a folded piece of yellowed parchment written in dark crimson ink.
Lyon picked up the parchment with steady fingers and unfolded it.
There were only eight words written on the page, delivered in his grandfather's unmistakable, aggressive handwriting:
“The Darlington blood is fake. You are the...”
Before Lyon could read the final line, his satellite phone on the desk vibrated violently, its red light flashing continuously in the dark room.
The screen displayed an emergency alert from the city's central command network.
