Chapter 2: Don’t You Know The Law?

Zero stormed out of the courtroom while dialing his wife's number. He didn't even wait to speak with his client. Reporters immediately rushed at him with their cameras and microphones.

"Mr. Zero! Who was the woman in the pictures that you presented to the court?" one of them asked.

Fortunately, his assistant Gina jumped to his rescue along with some security men, and Zero was able to make it to his car.

His assistant got in beside him. "Damn reporters," she muttered.

The call ended without his wife picking up. Zero dialed again. The phone rang, but she still didn't answer. Zero dropped his phone, turned on the car, and drove out of the courthouse.

His assistant looked at him, debating within herself. After some time, she finally decided to speak.

"I probably shouldn't be asking now, but that woman in those photos was your wife, Sasha... wasn't it?"

"Yes."

"F*ck," she cursed. "How did Marcus get those pictures? You don't think they might be photoshopped, or do you really think he’s having an affair with your wife?"

"I don't know. That’s what I’m going to find out," Zero replied.

"Okay. But I hope you’re not planning to do anything rash."

Zero didn’t respond.

"Zero, you heard me, right? Zero... Zero," she called out. "Look, there’s no reason for you to break the law, because..."

"Just shut up, Gina. SHUT UP!" Zero yelled. "I have a lot on my mind right now, and I don’t want to hear anything else from you."

Nothing more was said after that.

Zero drove into his wife’s workplace. Sasha Lindsey worked at a beverage company as a marketer.

As soon as he parked his car, a security guard approached him.

"Good day. I am Attorney Zero Lindsey, and this is my assistant Gina. My wife works in this company, and I am here to see her about something very urgent," Zero said.

"May I see some ID, please?" the security man asked.

"Of course."

Zero brought out his ID card and showed it to him.

After confirming the ID, the security man asked, "What is her name, and which department does she work in?"

"Her name is Sasha Lindsey, and she works in the Marketing Department," Zero answered.

The man led them into the company building to the reception room. The reception area was a bit crowded, with different visitors waiting for various reasons.

The security man gave Zero and Gina seats, then went to confer with the receptionist. Luckily, the receptionist knew who Zero was, so she asked the security man to bring him and his assistant over. The man did as instructed before returning to his duty post.

"Long time, Zero. So you finally decided to grace us with your presence?"

Zero forced a smile. "Yeah. I am here to see my wife. Can you please call her for me?"

The receptionist frowned. "Sasha took a one week leave from work, so she didn’t come in today."

Zero blinked. "What?" He hadn’t known that.

"Yes. She’s been on leave since Monday. As her husband, you ought to know," she said. "Is everything alright between you and her?"

Zero forced another smile. "Yeah. Everything’s fine. I will be going now."

He left before the rage boiling inside him showed on his face. The reason he was so furious was because Sasha had been dressing up for work every day, even though she was supposedly on leave.

Where had Sasha been going, then?

He got back into the car with Gina.

"So, any idea where your wife might be?" Gina asked.

"No, I don’t..." Then he paused as he remembered the last thing Marcus had told him before leaving the courtroom. "I think I know where she might be... But I hope I’m wrong."

He started the car and drove out of the company. An hour later, he arrived at the Silver Crown penthouse suite.

He checked the time on his watch. 6:44 PM.

"Zero, what are we doing here? This is Marcus’s building," Gina said.

"I know. We will just stay until 8 PM, then we leave. Alright?"

"I suggest that we leave right now, but I know you won’t listen to me."

"You are damn right, I won’t."

A few minutes before 8 PM, two expensive black cars pulled up not far from where Zero’s car was parked. Six mean looking men in black suits stepped out of one of the first car. Marcus, came out of the second car. Stepping out beside him was his PA, Veronica... and Sasha.

Zero quickly dialed her number. It rang. She brought out her phone to see who was calling. When she saw the caller ID, she dropped her phone back into her bag, completely ignoring the call.

Zero felt a sudden pain in his chest.

Marcus Fisher reached out with his right hand and grabbed Sasha’s butt. She didn’t flinch or remove his hand, much to Veronica’s distaste.

"Zero, don’t do anything reckless," Gina said.

But it was already too late.

Zero couldn’t control his anger anymore and stormed out of the car.

"SASHA!"

Sasha turned at the call of her name. Her eyes widened when she saw her husband marching toward them in rage. She quickly removed Marcus’s hand from her buttocks.

Marcus grinned, and his six guards quickly moved to block Zero’s path.

"It’s alright, guys. Let him pass," Marcus said.

His men slowly stepped aside.

"Zero, what are you doing here?" Sasha asked.

"I should be the one asking you that question," he replied as he came face to face with her.

"I am here for a business meeting," she said.

"Funny. I learned from your workplace that you’re on a one week leave," Zero revealed.

Sasha flinched. "Well... yeah... I am still doing some work while on leave."

"You cheap liar," he said, throwing one of the incriminating photos at her. "Is that the work you have been doing?"

Sasha stared at the picture in shock. She didn’t know what to say. Tears slowly rolled down her face.

Marcus decided to cut in.

"Now, don’t be disrespectful to your wife. She was really working on securing a partnership between my hotels and her company. You can see how hard she’s been working from the picture you just dropped."

"Shut up, Marcus," Zero said.

"Now, boy, this is my den. Trust me when I say you don’t want to disrespect me here," Marcus replied.

Sasha sniffed and wiped her tears.

"Zero, I am sorry that I cheated on you. But what did you expect me to do? If I close the deal with Marcus, I would have been promoted at work."

"Are you being serious right now? Is the promotion more important than me? THAN OUR MARRIAGE?"

"YES!" Sasha yelled. "During these past few days with Marcus, I’ve realized how little of a man you actually are. When have you ever bought me anything nice? Real diamonds? Gold? Pearls? Taken me shopping or to upscale restaurants? Marcus did all that for me. He treated me like a queen. Tell me, what have I benefited from you in our three years of marriage?"

"Wow," was all Zero could say.

Marcus chuckled and stepped closer.

"You see, Zero," he said softly, "a woman like Sasha isn’t satisfied by a man who argues objections in court and comes home smelling of cheap whiskey and defeat."

Zero’s fists clenched at his sides.

Marcus wasn’t done.

"She belongs to a man who can actually satisfy her. A man who knows how to make her beg... how to make her forget she ever married a failure."

Something inside Zero snapped. And without thinking, his fist flew.

CRACK.

The punch landed square on Marcus’s jaw. He staggered back a step, clearly not expecting it.

For one brief second, everything went still.

Then chaos exploded.

The six guards rushed forward instantly. Two of them grabbed Zero before he could swing again. Another slammed a fist into his ribs. Someone drove a knee into his stomach.

Gina screamed. "STOP! You will kill him!"

But the guards didn’t listen. They kept beating him.

Marcus straightened slowly, touching the corner of his mouth. When he pulled his hand away, there was blood on his knuckles.

"You attacked me first, so whatever I do to you will count as self defense. Don't you know the law, attorney?"

Sasha stood there trembling, tears falling, but she didn’t move to help her husband.

Veronica couldn’t stand the sight any longer.

"You have to stop your guards, Marcus. Though Zero attacked first, if you hurt him too badly just after you had a court case, public opinion will turn against you. Which will force the law to act."

"Hmm, I guess you are right," Marcus said. "Let him go."

The guards released Zero roughly, and he collapsed to the floor. Gina immediately rushed to his side.

Marcus adjusted his suit jacket.

"Go home, Zero." Then he turned, placing a possessive arm around Sasha’s waist. "Come, darling. We have dinner reservations."

Sasha hesitated... just for a second. Then she followed Marcus inside.

You can pick them up at the pharmacy on your way out. Take them only if you need them, avoid lifting anything heavy, and... absolutely no drinking for at least three weeks." Zero nodded, quietly playing along. He didn’t need the medication anymore... not with the way his body have already fully recovered, unnaturally fast. Still, he let the doctor think otherwise. "You will also need a follow up with a local physician in about a week, just to be safe." Kemp continued. He hesitated, studying Zero’s face. "And... try not to do anymore dangerous heroic deeds for the meantime, Mr. Lindsey. Two hospital stays in a month isn’t a record I would want for anyone."

Chapter 3: Don't Let Me Die Here Zero sat in the backseat of his car, as Gina drove him to the hospital. She looked at him through the middle rearview mirror. "What were you thinking? No matter how angry you are... you should have known better than to recklessly assault Marcus, especially in his own building." Zero didn't reply. Gina continued. "If Marcus guards hadn't jumped you, he could have easily made a case against you for your actions. You would have been in serious trouble, and might have even lost your license." "Gina, I don't want your criticism right now, okay?" Zero said. "No, you need to hear it... because you seem to have lost all rationality." "Gina..." "No, you listen to me..." "Gina, WATCH OUT!!"
