The hallway was silent. Too silent.

Jonah stood with his axe in hand, body still and alert, like a wolf in a storm. Blood from the last fight dripped slowly from his weapon, hitting the floor in small, soft taps.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Lisa stood behind him, clutching Kevin tight. The boy didn’t cry. He didn’t make a sound. But his small hands were shaking.

Jonah’s eyes scanned the hallway ahead. He had heard something. A scrape. A breath. But now, nothing. Not even the hum of broken lights or the soft groans of distant zombies.

“Stay behind me,” Jonah whispered without turning.

Lisa nodded. “What was that sound?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “But it’s still here. I can feel it.”

He took a careful step forward. The floor creaked beneath his boot. He paused, listening. Nothing.

The air was heavy, thick like fog. Dust floated slowly through the light of a broken ceiling panel.

Jonah moved again, one step at a time, closer to the shadowed corner where the sound had come from, then, Scratch.

People moved slowly through the ashes, picking up broken wood and shattered hopes.Jonah stood near the gate, staring into the forest. His axe rested on his back. The black stone from the Seer was tied around his neck with an old string. He could still feel it pulsing. Lisa sat nearby with Kevin, wrapping a scarf around his neck. She looked up at Jonah now and then. She knew something was bothering him, but she didn’t speak yet. Finally, Jonah turned to her. “We leave at sunset,” he said. “The longer we stay, the more danger we bring.”Lisa nodded. “How far is the Chamber?”“Days,” Jonah answered. “Maybe more.”Lisa looked down. “Kevin’s tired.”“I know,” Jonah said softly. “So am I.”They packed that evening. Malden gave them dried food, two maps, and a small radio. “You won’t find many people out there,” he warned. “But if you do… they might not be friendly.”Jonah nodded. “We can handle it.”Malden h

Shadows ran in every direction, some trying to fight, others just trying to flee. But in the middle of it all, one figure stood still. Subject Two. Tall. Pale. Dressed in black. His eyes were empty, no color, no light, just darkness. It pulsed like a beating heart, hot and heavy.Subject Two took one step forward. Jonah didn’t move. Lisa stood behind him, holding Kevin tightly. The creature raised one hand and pointed at Kevin. “No,” Jonah said quietly. “You’re not getting him.”Subject Two didn’t speak. But he charged.

  • Chapter 15: The Seer

The village was quiet. Not the kind of silence that felt peaceful, but the kind that made Jonah’s skin crawl. Every step he took down the dirt path felt watched. The wooden houses were small and crooked. Lanterns flickered with soft orange light. The people moved slowly, quietly, eyes filled with secrets.Lisa walked close behind him, holding Kevin’s hand. The boy kept looking around with wide eyes. He didn’t speak, but he clung to Lisa’s side like a shadow. The bearded man who had welcomed them was still walking ahead. His heavy boots crushed the dry leaves beneath them.Jonah broke the silence. “What’s your name?” he asked. The man turned slightly. “Malden,” he said. “I lead this village. We’re not many, but we survive.”“How long have you been out here?” Lisa asked, her voice soft.“Since before the wall went up,” Malden replied. “We were here when the sky turned red. When the screams started. When the dead began to walk.”Jonah narrowed his eyes. “Why didn’t the virus take you?”

The wind howled outside the broken supermarket. Jonah stood near the boarded-up window, watching the dark street. His hands were tight on the axe. His back ached. His thoughts were racing. Behind him, Lisa sat beside Kevin. The boy was still asleep, his face pale and his arms covered in small bruises from the wires.“Jonah,” Lisa said softly, “tell me what happened.”He didn’t turn around at first. He kept staring out the window, listening to the wind. Then, after a moment, he spoke. “I met someone out there,” he said. “A woman. She wasn’t like the others.”Lisa stood and walked closer. “What do you mean?”“She said she was like me. Changed by the system. But she called herself a Watcher.”Lisa looked confused. “Watcher?”“She said she could see the future,” Jonah said. “And that she saw my death.”Lisa’s face turned pale. “She told me,” Jonah continued, “that the virus isn’t just about zombies. There’s something worse. Something underground. And they need Kevin to wake it.”Lisa gr
