Jonah stood still behind a dusty wall, his chest rising and falling as he tried to calm his breath. His heart pounded hard, not from fear, but from the pressure building inside him.
He could hear the soft whimpers of people nearby. Lisa. Kevin. They were hiding, scared. Trapped. He wanted to run to them, to help them, but there was a problem.
He had powers. And they didn’t know.
Jonah looked down at his hands. They looked normal. But they weren’t. Ever since the accident, the one with the electricity, his body had changed.
He could move faster than a speeding car, faster than anything he had ever seen. But if he used that power in front of people, they would ask questions. Hard questions.
"What if they think I'm a monster?" he thought. “What if Lisa looks at me like I'm not human anymore?"
He shook his head and whispered, “I can’t lose them… I have to save them. Even if it means showing who I am.”
He crouched low, muscles tight, ready to dash forward. His fingers touched the cold handle of his axe. He didn’t know how many zombies were ahead. He didn’t care. He had to act fast.
The hallway was dark. Broken lights flickered above. There were shadows moving, slow at first. Then faster. Much faster.
Jonah’s eyes widened. “That’s… not normal.”
The zombies came into view. But something was wrong. These weren’t like the ones he had seen before. They didn’t limp or drag their feet. They ran. Fast. Almost too fast.
One of them turned its head and looked directly at him. Its eyes glowed faintly, like something alive… and thinking.
Jonah whispered, “They’re waiting for me.”
He stepped forward. The zombies didn’t groan or scream. Instead, they moved. Quickly. Like trained hunters.
Jonah leapt back as one of them swiped at him. He rolled across the ground and sprang up, swinging his axe. The blade hit the creature's neck, but it dodged at the last second. It was like it knew the attack was coming.
More zombies rushed at him. They weren’t normal. They dodged, they jumped, they snarled like animals with brains. Jonah struck again and again, breathing hard, his speed keeping him alive. But something was wrong.
“These ones are learning,” he muttered. “They’re evolving.”
Blood splattered. One zombie tried to grab his shoulder, but Jonah twisted and kicked it across the hall. Another came from behind, but he ducked and sliced upward. The sound of the axe cutting through flesh echoed in the hallway.
Still more came.
Jonah’s body moved faster and faster, too fast for a normal person. His legs blurred. His arms spun the axe like it was made of feathers. But his mind was focused on one thing, Lisa and Kevin.
He paused for a second and activated his infrared vision, another gift from the surge. The world turned red and black. He saw heat. He saw shapes. Two people hiding behind a steel door. Safe for now. But something else…
Jonah frowned. “No…”
There was another heat signature. Not like the others. Bigger. Faster. Stronger. It was heading toward them. And it wasn’t on this floor, it was already moving down the stairs above.
Another hybrid.
His eyes widened. He didn’t waste a second. He ran.
Walls flew past him as he sprinted like lightning. His legs barely touched the ground. His hair whipped behind him. The air tore at his skin. He didn’t care.
He reached the staircase and saw the hybrid landing hard on the ground. It was snarling. Its body was long, its arms stretched, its mouth full of crooked teeth.
Lisa screamed. “Jonah! Save us!”
She couldn’t see him yet. But somehow, she knew he was close.
Jonah leapt over the hybrid’s arm and slid to the floor in front of Lisa and Kevin, his axe raised.
“You will not touch them!” he shouted.
The hybrid roared and charged. The ground shook beneath its feet.
Jonah didn’t flinch. He moved.
The battle began.
He swung his axe, sparks flying as it clashed against the hybrid’s sharp claws. The creature screamed and clawed again, but Jonah blocked every hit. Behind him, Lisa and Kevin were frozen.
Lisa’s eyes were wide. “H-how… how are you doing that?” she whispered.
Jonah didn’t answer. He was too focused.
The hybrid was smarter than the others. It tried to lure him away, tried to attack from the side. But Jonah was quicker. Every time the monster jumped, he jumped higher. Every time it clawed, he was already gone.
Finally, with one loud cry, Jonah brought the axe down, straight into the hybrid’s head. The body twitched… then fell.
Silence.
Blood dripped from the edge of his weapon.
He turned slowly to face Lisa and Kevin.
Lisa was shaking. “You… Jonah… What are you?” she asked, her voice soft and scared.
Jonah looked down.
“I’m still me,” he said. “I didn’t ask for this. But I couldn’t let you die.”
Lisa didn’t answer. Kevin looked up at him like he was staring at a superhero.
Then something moved in the dark.
Jonah tensed.
A small sound. A scraping. A breath. Another zombie? Another hybrid?
Jonah’s hand gripped the axe tighter. He stepped forward slowly, eyes scanning the shadows.
But nothing came out. Not yet.

Chapter 9: The Ringing in the Silence
The room was quiet. Too quiet. Jonah lay on the cold, dusty floor with his back against the wall. His axe was resting beside him, and his eyes were closed, just for a moment of peace. The night had been hard. His muscles ached. His mind wouldn’t stop thinking about everything, Lisa, Kevin, the zombies, and the strange power inside him that no one else knew about. But then, “Jonah,” a soft voice called his name.He opened his eyes fast. His hand reached for the axe before he even knew it. His body moved on its own. “Who’s there?” he whispered sharply.Lisa stood in front of him. Her face was calm, but her eyes were heavy with worry. She looked like she had been thinking a lot. “It’s just me,” she said quietly. “I... I couldn’t sleep.”Jonah slowly lowered his axe and sat up straighter. “Is something wrong? Did you hear something?”Lisa shook her head. “No, I just... needed someone to talk to.”Jonah looked at her for a moment, then nodded and moved over so she could sit beside him. He
Chapter 8: The Strange One
Jonah wiped the sweat from his forehead as he stepped over the last zombie’s body. The fourth floor was quiet now. Too quiet. The smell of blood and rot filled the air. He looked around slowly, his axe still in his hand, just in case one of them was still moving. He had been fighting for almost an hour. The zombies here weren’t as hard to kill as before. At first, he thought maybe they were weak. But deep down, he knew the truth. He had gotten stronger. His arms were faster. His legs were lighter. His eyes saw more clearly in the dark. And his heart? It still beat fast, but not from fear. From focus.Jonah looked up at the stairs that led to the seventh floor. His hands tightened on the axe.“If I’m this fast now, I should go check the offices,” he whispered to himself. “There might be someone alive up there.”The hallway was dark. The flickering lights made strange shadows on the walls. His boots made soft thuds as he ran toward the stairwell. Every corner he passed had old blood s

Lisa walked beside him, holding young Kevin gently in her arms. For the first time since the nightmare began, Jonah felt something unfamiliar, hope. There were others on this floor, he could feel it. Survivors hiding in fear, clutching silence like a shield to keep the zombies away. But at least now, he wasn’t wandering alone anymore.Lisa’s voice broke the silence. “It’s getting late. I know you want to keep searching, but Kevin needs rest.”Jonah turned toward her, concern lining his face. She looked exhausted, her arms trembling from carrying the boy.“I’ll find somewhere safe,” he said. “You both need to rest. I’ll stay on watch.”He scanned the area, finally spotting a small storage room with a reinforced door and a broken window high enough to climb out from if things went bad. Better yet, it had a roof ledge right above it.Zomb
Chapter 6: Death on The Fifth Floor
Jonah couldn’t believe his luck. After running, hiding, and fighting alone for what felt like days, he finally had someone beside him, someone alive. The weight that had settled on his shoulders since the outbreak had started felt a little lighter now.He glanced at Lisa as they moved slowly along the dusty hallway of the fifth floor. She cradled Kevin protectively in her arms, her steps careful but steady. It wasn't just relief he felt, it was something warmer, something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in a long time.“Since we’re all on the fifth floor now,” he began, trying to keep his voice low and calm, “it means we’ve got a chance. A real chance to make it out of this building. But we can’t mess up. No slip-ups. And we better hope those things aren’t swarming the lower floors.”He looked ahead, then back at her. He tried to sound confident, for her sake more than his own.Lisa gave a quick nod. Her voice was quiet but firm. “As long as we follow your lead and stay alert, we’ll
Chapter 5: The Voice Behind the Door
Jonah stood still, listening closely. A faint cry for help echoed from somewhere nearby, bouncing off the cracked walls and blood-smeared tiles of the fifth floor. He didn’t recognize the voice, but he didn’t need to. Someone needed help. That was enough. He tightened his grip on the axe. “Where are they?” he muttered under his breath, stepping carefully over a torn backpack and shattered glass. His eyes scanned every corner, every door, every dark hallway.Oddly, he felt light on his feet, faster, stronger than before. He was covering ground easily, moving almost without effort. It felt strange, like the building itself had shrunk or he had become something... more. Each step came with speed and balance he didn’t remember having before.Jonah looked down at his hands, then back at the hallway. “I’m changing,” he whispered, half to himself. “But I’m not stopping now.”He rounded a corner and halted. Just ahead, a group of zombies stood outside a half-open door. They twitched, their he
