Chapter 1. The System of the Coward

The cave walls groaned under the sheer weight of the cave-troll’s assault, the stone shivering as the beast slammed a fist the size of a wagon wheel against Vesper’s buckler.

"Oh, come on! Seriously?" Vesper wheezed, his boots grinding into the damp subterranean muck. His shoulder shrieked in protest, the steel of his shield biting into his collarbone. "You’ve been chasing me for three miles! Don’t you have, like, a family? A hobby? A job that isn't ‘murdering dungeon delvers’?"

The troll let out a wet, guttural roar that smelled like rotting peat and stagnant swamp water. It raised its massive, club-like hand again, the shadow looming over Vesper like a closing tombstone.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," Vesper gasped, his voice cracking with the strain. "I’m the annoying snack that won't go down. Can’t you just eat a goblin? They’re smaller! They’re crunchier! They’re definitely less sweaty than me!"

CRACK.

Vesper’s shield dented. The force sent a jolt of pure white lightning up his spine, rattling his teeth. He felt his footing slip. He was a bottom-tier scout, the guy who checked for tripwires so the "real" heroes could walk in and take the glory. He wasn't supposed to be a tank. He wasn't supposed to be dying in a hole for the sake of a copper-tier bounty.

"I’m gonna die," he whispered to himself, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I’m going to be a cautionary tale for the new recruits. 'Don't be like Vesper, kids, or you'll end up as cave-troll mush.'"

A blue, translucent screen flickered into existence, hovering inches from his frantic eyes.

[SYSTEM ALERT: Vitality at 12%. Stress levels: Critical. Trait 'Ultimate Cowardice' activated.]

"Oh, great! A hallucination! That’s just fantastic, I’m finally losing my mind!" Vesper yelled, scrambling backward as the troll’s club smashed into the floor where his head had been a second ago. "Do you have any suggestions, you stupid magic window? Or are you just here to watch the light go out?"

[Suggested Action: 'Strategic Withdrawal'. Reward: 50 Skill Points.]

"Strategic withdrawal? You mean running away?" Vesper dodged a sweeping backhand, ducking so low his nose scraped the cavern floor. "I’m already doing that, you piece of junk! I’m running as fast as my pathetic legs will carry me!"

[Skill Unlocked: Smoke Screen. Cost: 0. Duration: 10 seconds. Effect: Instant concealment.]

"A smoke screen? Finally! Something useful!" Vesper fumbled for the trigger, his fingers trembling so hard he almost dropped his sword. "Wait, it's free? No cooldown? Are you serious?"

"Eat this, you oversized rock-brain!" Vesper shouted, slamming his hand onto the activation icon.

A cloud of thick, iridescent vapor erupted from his boots, swirling with a strange, magnetic energy that defied the cave’s natural airflow. The troll swung blindly, its massive arm passing through the mist and missing Vesper by a hair’s breadth.

"Bye! It’s been real! It’s been terrible! I never want to see your ugly mug again!" Vesper scrambled toward the narrow fissure he’d spotted earlier, his breath hitching in his throat.

[Skill Points Earned: 50. Total: 50. Current Status: Running like a coward. Well done.]

"Shut it!" Vesper spat, his legs pumping with a frantic, desperate rhythm. "I’m not a coward, I’m… I’m a tactical repositioner. It’s a career choice!"

The smoke screen was more than just a distraction; it was a blanket of silence. The troll’s roaring muffled, turning into a distant, confused rumble. Vesper squeezed into the dark, jagged crevice, his armor scraping against the cold, unyielding rock.

"Just a little further," he wheezed, his fingers digging into the loose rubble. "Just find a ledge, get out, and I promise, I’m retiring. I’ll go be a librarian. Librarians don't get chased by trolls. Librarians get paper cuts, and that’s a win in my book."

The ground beneath him didn't feel solid. As he shifted his weight, a sharp, metallic clink echoed through the tunnel, followed by a sickening sound of grinding stone.

"Wait. No. Don't do that," Vesper pleaded, feeling the earth tilt beneath his feet. "Don't you dare collapse now. Not when I’m having such a successful getaway!"

Gravity, cruel and indifferent, decided that Vesper had traveled quite enough for one day. The floor disintegrated.

"Oh, for the love of—"

His world turned into a dizzying blur of dust and darkness. He tumbled through the void, hitting rocky outcroppings that rattled his bones, his scream echoing into a deep, hollow abyss. Just when he thought he’d be splattered into a stain on the bedrock, his fall slowed, as if the air itself grew heavy and viscous.

He landed with a dull thud on a polished, obsidian floor. It wasn't stone. It was smooth, cool, and hummed with a faint, rhythmic vibration.

Vesper rolled onto his back, gasping for air, clutching his bruised chest. "I’m alive? How am I alive? That should’ve been a five-story drop."

Silence reclaimed the space. It wasn't the silence of a cave, where there was always the dripping of water or the skittering of insects. This was the heavy, pressurized silence of a tomb.

Vesper pushed himself up, his eyes straining in the gloom. He held up his lantern, the flame flickering to life with a pathetic, golden glow.

The light hit a surface, then another. And then, he saw it.

In the center of a circular chamber, surrounded by circular conduits that glowed with a soft, pulsing blue light, sat a pod. It was constructed of a material he’d never seen before—something that looked like liquid pearl hardened by time.

Vesper crept closer, his boots making no sound on the obsidian. "What is this place? This isn't a natural formation. This is… high-tech? No, that’s not right. This looks like something out of the myths. The First Age stuff."

He reached the pod, his breath catching in his throat. Inside the translucent shell, suspended in a silvery liquid, was a woman. She wasn't dead. Her chest rose and fell in a slow, hypnotic rhythm. She wore armor—plates of iridescent white metal that shifted like oil on water, inscribed with runes that pulsed in sync with her heartbeat.

"Who are you?" Vesper whispered, his fear of the troll forgotten, replaced by a terrifying, blossoming awe. "You’ve been down here for thousands of years, haven't you?"

He reached out, his hand hovering inches from the glass. His heart wasn't hammering from terror anymore. It was beating with a strange, sudden resonance, as if his own soul had recognized a pulse it had been searching for his entire life.

"You’re definitely not a cave-troll," he muttered, a soft, nervous smile tugging at his lips. "And I have a feeling that finding you is going to be a lot more trouble than fighting one."

He looked back at the collapsed ceiling, then down at the woman. "I suppose my retirement plan just got complicated."
