Jonah’s face softened. He stepped forward and placed his massive hands on Kevin’s shoulders.

"Kevin, listen to me," Jonah pleaded softly. "If we do not do this, every single child in those trucks will be crushed in three days. We cannot outrun it. The math is absolute."

"Then I am going with you to the canyon!" Kevin demanded. He grabbed his heavy iron mace. "I am the Scout. I can find the best path through the ruined city. I can help you set the bombs."

"No," Jonah shook his head immediatel

Marcus pointed a shaking finger at Jonah. "Whoever stands in the city to push that button will be crushed," Marcus cried. "When the tall buildings fall down, the bait will be buried under millions of tons of concrete along with the monsters. There is no way to run out in time! It is a suicide mission!" The room erupted into panicked whispers. "It is true!" Elena said, stepping forward. "You cannot outrun falling skyscrapers! The dust alone will suffocate you!" "We cannot ask anyone to do that!" another man yelled. "It is asking a man to kill himself!" Jonah raised his massive right hand. "Silence!" Jonah roared. The room instantly went quiet. The sheer power of the giant man’s voice stopped their panic. Jonah looked at the frightened faces of his people. He did not look angry. He looked very tired, but very peaceful. "I am not asking anyone to do it," Jonah said softly. His deep voice was completely calm. "I am doing it." Kevin gasped. "Dad. No." Jonah looked at his son. "I

The cold concrete room was very dark, but it was not empty. In the center of the room, Kevin stood completely still. He had his right hand pressed tightly against the side of his head. He closed his normal eye. He opened his other eye wide. A bright, beautiful beam of pure blue light shot out of Kevin’s pupil. The blue light hit the blank gray wall. It created a massive, glowing, three-dimensional map of the ruined world. The survivors of the camp gathered around in a circle. They held their heavy coats tight against the freezing air. Their breath came out in thick white clouds. They stared at the map. At the top of the wall, a massive red wall of light was slowly creeping downward. It was the Glacier Horde. It was the moving mountain of millions of frozen dead bodies. "It is moving fast," old Marcus whispered. His hands shook as he held his heavy iron pipe. "It will crush our mountain in less than a day." Jonah stood next to the glowing blue map. He was a giant. His broad ches

He grabbed his heavy iron mace. "I am the Scout. I can find the best path through the ruined city. I can help you set the bombs." "No," Jonah shook his head immediately. The fear of losing his son flared hot in his chest. "I need you to stay with the convoy. I need you to protect Lisa. If wild ice zombies attack the slow trucks, they need a fighter to shatter them." "Elena can protect them!" Kevin argued fiercely. "She is strong now! She knows how to swing the mace!" Elena stepped forward. She put her hand on Kevin’s arm, but she looked at Jonah. "Kevin is right, Jonah," Elena said. Her scarred face was brave and calm. "I will protect the convoy. I will gu

Jonah unfolded the paper carefully on the wooden table. It was a pre-apocalypse map of the country. It showed the old highways, the old cities, and the tall mountains. "Lisa, Kevin, Elena. Come here," Jonah ordered. The three of them hurried over to the table. Lisa wheeled her chair as close as she could. Jonah smoothed the old paper flat with his massive, iron-scarred hands. "Math tells you how fast something is moving," Jonah said quietly. His dark brown eyes scanned the map. "But math does not account for human stupidity. And it does not account for traps." Jonah pointed his thick finger at the center of the map. "Here is our mountain," Jonah said. He dragged his finger straight down. "Here is the path South. It is a straight, flat valley. If the Glacier Horde follows this path, it will roll over us easily." "Because it is flat," Lisa nodded. "There is nothing to slow the ice down." "Exactly," Jonah said. Then, Jonah moved his finger to the left. He pointed to a spot a few

A new blue box appeared in the center of Kevin’s vision. The numbers inside the box were turning bright red. [CONVOY SPEED ESTIMATE: 0.5 MILES PER HOUR.] Kevin gasped. His heart stopped beating for a second. "No," Kevin whispered. "No, that can't be right. Do the math again!" He blinked his eye, forcing the System to recalculate. But machines do not lie. The numbers did not change. [HORDE SPEED: 1.2 MPH.] [CONVOY SPEED: 0.5 MPH.] [TIME TO INTERCEPT: 72 HOURS.] [SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 0.00%] Kevin felt a cold, terrible sickness in his stomach. The trucks were too heavy. The snow was too deep. The frozen oil in the engines made them incredibly weak. If they drove South, they would only move at half a mile per hour. They would crawl like sick turtles through the deep snow. And the Glacier Horde behind them was moving more than twice as fast. The moving mountain of ice would catch them. It would not take a week. It would take exactly three days. In three days, the massive ice

The Sanctuary of the First Seed was completely consumed by panic. It was a loud, messy, terrifying kind of panic. People were running in every direction. They slipped on the frozen dirt. They fell down, got back up, and kept running. "Move faster!" Old Marcus screamed. His breath came out of his mouth in thick, white clouds. He threw rusty cans of beans into a heavy wooden box. Clang! Clatter! He did not care if the cans were dented. He only cared about saving the food. The order to abandon the settlement had been given. Jonah stood in the center of the camp. His broad, massive chest heaved up and down. The thick, dark iron scars on his skin were cold, but his dark brown eyes were burning with intense focus. He watched his people work. He was their leader, and he had to keep them moving. "Do not pack extra clothes!" Jonah’s deep voice roared over the howling wind of the blizzard. "Leave the heavy bags! We only take food, medicine, and fuel! The trucks cannot carry dead weight!"
