They made it down to the fourth floor.
Jonah felt it deep in his gut, things were only going to get weirder from here. But this time, he wasn’t alone. Lisa walked beside him, holding young Kevin gently in her arms.
For the first time since the nightmare began, Jonah felt something unfamiliar, hope.
There were others on this floor, he could feel it. Survivors hiding in fear, clutching silence like a shield to keep the zombies away. But at least now, he wasn’t wandering alone anymore.
Lisa’s voice broke the silence. “It’s getting late. I know you want to keep searching, but Kevin needs rest.”
Jonah turned toward her, concern lining his face. She looked exhausted, her arms trembling from carrying the boy.
“I’ll find somewhere safe,” he said. “You both need to rest. I’ll stay on watch.”
He scanned the area, finally spotting a small storage room with a reinforced door and a broken window high enough to climb out from if things went bad. Better yet, it had a roof ledge right above it.
Zombies didn’t climb. That fact alone had kept Jonah alive longer than most.
He cleared the room, made a bed from old folded blankets, and turned back to them. “Here. It’s not much, but it’s safe. I’ll guard the door. No zombie’s getting close, not while I’m breathing.”
Lisa nodded and stepped inside, gently laying Kevin down.
“Thank you,” the boy whispered, voice soft and fragile.
Jonah froze. Kevin had spoken.
“You talked,” he whispered, his eyes wide. “You actually talked. That’s… that’s amazing.”
Lisa turned, smiling through her weariness. “He hasn’t spoken since we pulled him away from his mother’s… body. I didn’t think he would again.”
Jonah crouched beside Kevin and gave the boy a gentle pat on the head. “Get some rest, little man. Tomorrow’s a new day, and I wanna hear all your stories.”
Lisa pulled the blankets over Kevin, her smile barely visible in the dim light. “Thank you, Jonah. Really.”
He stood back and closed the door softly. He watched the two of them for a moment, feeling something strange warm his chest. It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t pain.
It was… belonging. He shook the thought away. Now’s not the time to get soft.
Once he was sure they were asleep, he stepped into the hallway. It was eerily silent, not even the groan of the undead echoing down the walls. But Jonah knew they were there, lurking. Waiting.
He had unfinished business.
“I need to level up,” he muttered. “System, scan the area for zombies.”
‘Command received. No immediate threats detected. Would you like a full area scan?’
Jonah raised an eyebrow. “You can do that?”
‘Affirmative. Scanning now… Scan complete. Fifty-seven hostiles detected on the eastern end of this floor.’
“Perfect,” he grinned. “Now we’re talking.”
He headed east, footsteps light, pulse steady. If he handled this quietly, he could be back before Lisa and Kevin even stirred.
Still… What would Lisa say if she saw him like this?
How do you explain that 4400 volts of electricity ran through your body and left you stronger, faster, deadlier? That a system lives inside you, rewarding every kill with power?
She’d think I’m a freak.
The thought stung. But he pushed it aside. Protecting them mattered more.
He reached the corridor where the system had pinpointed the zombies. And there they were, clumped together, mindless, twitching, jaws slack.
Jonah’s eyes narrowed. He pulled the axe from his back, letting it rest heavy in his hands.
“No holding back,” he whispered. “Let’s clean house.”
He charged in. The first zombie didn’t have time to turn before Jonah’s axe split its skull in two. The second collapsed in a heap, its torso nearly severed. His movements were blurs, fluid, unstoppable.
Zombies dropped like dominos. He didn’t feel tired. In fact, every kill made him feel stronger. Lighter. Faster.
He ducked, twisted, pivoted, moving through the horde like a storm of steel and lightning. Blood splattered the walls, but he kept going, face calm, eyes glowing with purpose.
“Is it just me, or did I get faster?” he asked aloud.
‘Affirmative. Speed enhancement unlocked. You are now classified as Rank: King Slayer.’
“King Slayer, huh?” He smirked. “Not bad.”
‘Current stats: Strength exceeds all known human athletes. Movement speed: 500 miles per hour. Ability: Electrical manipulation. Additional powers will unlock with continued combat performance.’
He paused for a moment, catching his breath, not from exhaustion, but disbelief.
500 miles per hour. I’m not human anymore.
But the scary part? He didn’t mind.
He looked back down the blood-soaked hallway. No movement. All fifty-seven targets were eliminated.
And somewhere, just a few halls away, a woman and a child were sleeping peacefully, safe because of him.
Jonah tightened his grip on the axe. “All right,” he whispered, stepping deeper into the dark. “Let’s go hunting.”

Chapter 10: The Faster Ones
Jonah stood still behind a dusty wall, his chest rising and falling as he tried to calm his breath. His heart pounded hard, not from fear, but from the pressure building inside him.He could hear the soft whimpers of people nearby. Lisa. Kevin. They were hiding, scared. Trapped. He wanted to run to them, to help them, but there was a problem. He had powers. And they didn’t know.Jonah looked down at his hands. They looked normal. But they weren’t. Ever since the accident, the one with the electricity, his body had changed. He could move faster than a speeding car, faster than anything he had ever seen. But if he used that power in front of people, they would ask questions. Hard questions."What if they think I'm a monster?" he thought. “What if Lisa looks at me like I'm not human anymore?"He shook his head and whispered, “I can’t lose them… I have to save them. Even if it means showing who I am.”He crouched low, muscles tight, ready to dash forward. His fingers touched the cold han
Chapter 9: The Ringing in the Silence
The room was quiet. Too quiet. Jonah lay on the cold, dusty floor with his back against the wall. His axe was resting beside him, and his eyes were closed, just for a moment of peace. The night had been hard. His muscles ached. His mind wouldn’t stop thinking about everything, Lisa, Kevin, the zombies, and the strange power inside him that no one else knew about. But then, “Jonah,” a soft voice called his name.He opened his eyes fast. His hand reached for the axe before he even knew it. His body moved on its own. “Who’s there?” he whispered sharply.Lisa stood in front of him. Her face was calm, but her eyes were heavy with worry. She looked like she had been thinking a lot. “It’s just me,” she said quietly. “I... I couldn’t sleep.”Jonah slowly lowered his axe and sat up straighter. “Is something wrong? Did you hear something?”Lisa shook her head. “No, I just... needed someone to talk to.”Jonah looked at her for a moment, then nodded and moved over so she could sit beside him. He
Chapter 8: The Strange One
Jonah wiped the sweat from his forehead as he stepped over the last zombie’s body. The fourth floor was quiet now. Too quiet. The smell of blood and rot filled the air. He looked around slowly, his axe still in his hand, just in case one of them was still moving. He had been fighting for almost an hour. The zombies here weren’t as hard to kill as before. At first, he thought maybe they were weak. But deep down, he knew the truth. He had gotten stronger. His arms were faster. His legs were lighter. His eyes saw more clearly in the dark. And his heart? It still beat fast, but not from fear. From focus.Jonah looked up at the stairs that led to the seventh floor. His hands tightened on the axe.“If I’m this fast now, I should go check the offices,” he whispered to himself. “There might be someone alive up there.”The hallway was dark. The flickering lights made strange shadows on the walls. His boots made soft thuds as he ran toward the stairwell. Every corner he passed had old blood s

Chapter 6: Death on The Fifth Floor
Jonah couldn’t believe his luck. After running, hiding, and fighting alone for what felt like days, he finally had someone beside him, someone alive. The weight that had settled on his shoulders since the outbreak had started felt a little lighter now.He glanced at Lisa as they moved slowly along the dusty hallway of the fifth floor. She cradled Kevin protectively in her arms, her steps careful but steady. It wasn't just relief he felt, it was something warmer, something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in a long time.“Since we’re all on the fifth floor now,” he began, trying to keep his voice low and calm, “it means we’ve got a chance. A real chance to make it out of this building. But we can’t mess up. No slip-ups. And we better hope those things aren’t swarming the lower floors.”He looked ahead, then back at her. He tried to sound confident, for her sake more than his own.Lisa gave a quick nod. Her voice was quiet but firm. “As long as we follow your lead and stay alert, we’ll
Chapter 5: The Voice Behind the Door
Jonah stood still, listening closely. A faint cry for help echoed from somewhere nearby, bouncing off the cracked walls and blood-smeared tiles of the fifth floor. He didn’t recognize the voice, but he didn’t need to. Someone needed help. That was enough. He tightened his grip on the axe. “Where are they?” he muttered under his breath, stepping carefully over a torn backpack and shattered glass. His eyes scanned every corner, every door, every dark hallway.Oddly, he felt light on his feet, faster, stronger than before. He was covering ground easily, moving almost without effort. It felt strange, like the building itself had shrunk or he had become something... more. Each step came with speed and balance he didn’t remember having before.Jonah looked down at his hands, then back at the hallway. “I’m changing,” he whispered, half to himself. “But I’m not stopping now.”He rounded a corner and halted. Just ahead, a group of zombies stood outside a half-open door. They twitched, their he
