Chapter Three: The Beast's Lament
Xavier woke to the smell of burning flesh. His own flesh. The branding iron pressed against his chest, and he screamed. The sound tore out of his throat like a wounded animal, raw and desperate and utterly broken. His body arched against the chains that held him to the stone table, but there was no escape. There was never any escape. "Hold him steady," a voice said. Lord Caspian's voice. "We do not want him to hurt himself." Xavier's vision blurred. He could see the ceiling above him, cracked and stained with centuries of blood. He could smell the incense that the Inquisitors used to mask the stench of torture. And he could feel the brand searing into his skin, a mark that would never fade, a permanent reminder of who he was and what he had become. "The first brand is the Storm Sovereign," Caspian said, walking into Xavier's line of sight. His uncle's face was calm, almost bored, as if he were discussing the weather. "It marks you as a carrier of the corruption. The second brand will mark you as a traitor to the empire. And the third, well, you do not need to worry about the third. You will be dead before we get to it." Xavier spat blood onto the floor. "You are a coward," he rasped. "You killed my father because you were afraid of him. Because you knew he was stronger than you. Better than you." Caspian's expression did not change, but something flickered in his eyes. Something cold and dangerous. "Your father was a fool. He believed in the Sovereigns. He believed they could be saved. I proved him wrong." "You proved nothing. You just made him dead." Caspian stepped closer, his boots clicking against the stone floor. "Let me tell you a story, Xavier. A story you have never heard before." He leaned down until his face was inches from Xavier's. "Your father and I grew up together. We were brothers, not in blood, but in spirit. We trained together, fought together, dreamed together. And then he found the Storm Sovereign. He bonded with it. He became something more than human. And I was left behind." Xavier's heart was pounding. He had never heard this. He had never known his father and uncle had been close. "I tried to understand," Caspian continued. "I tried to accept what he had become. But the Sovereigns are a disease, Xavier. They corrupt everything they touch. Your father was no longer human. He was a monster wearing my brother's face. And I had to put him down." "You murdered him." "I saved him." Caspian's voice was cold, matter-of-fact. "I saved him from himself. And now I am going to save you." The brand came down again, this time on Xavier's shoulder. The pain was excruciating, a white-hot fire that spread through his entire body. He screamed again, his voice cracking, his throat raw. He could feel the storm energy rising inside him, fighting against the chains that held him, but it was not enough. The anti-magic collar around his neck was too strong. "Stop it." Zara's voice cut through the room like a blade. "Stop it right now." Xavier forced his eyes open. Zara was standing in the doorway, her face pale, her hands trembling. She was still wearing her imperial armor, but her hair was loose, falling around her face in disheveled waves. She looked like she had not slept in days. "Commander Valdris," Caspian said, his voice smooth as silk. "I was wondering when you would join us." "I told you," Zara said, stepping into the room. "I told you I wanted to be present for the interrogation. You said you would wait for me." "Plans changed." Caspian gestured to the brand on the table. "The corruption was spreading. I had to act quickly." Zara's eyes met Xavier's, and he saw the guilt in them. The shame. The love that she could not quite hide. "Let him go," she said. "Let him go right now." Caspian laughed. It was a cold, brittle sound. "Commander, I understand that you have complicated feelings for the prisoner. But you need to remember your duty. You made a promise. You promised me you would do what needed to be done." "I promised I would kill him if he became a threat," Zara said, her voice shaking. "But he has not become a threat. He is just a man. A broken, beaten man. And you are torturing him for no reason." "No reason?" Caspian picked up the brand and held it in the fire. "He is a Sovereign, Commander. He is a walking plague. And the only way to stop a plague is to burn it out at the source." "Then burn me," Xavier said, his voice barely a whisper. "Burn me and be done with it." Everyone in the room turned to look at him. Zara's eyes were wide with horror. Caspian's were narrowed in suspicion. And Xavier just smiled, a broken, bloody smile. "You want to kill me so badly," he said. "Go ahead. Do it. But I warn you, Uncle. I will haunt you. I will follow you to the grave and beyond. And I will make sure you never find peace." Caspian's face twisted in rage. He dropped the brand and grabbed Xavier by the throat, his fingers digging into the bruised flesh. "You think you can threaten me? You think you can scare me? I have killed your father. I have destroyed your family. And I will destroy you." "Then do it," Xavier rasped. "What are you waiting for?" Caspian's grip tightened, and Xavier felt the darkness closing in. He could not breathe. He could not think. All he could feel was the pressure around his throat and the rage burning in his chest. The storm energy was pulsing again, fighting against the collar, pushing against the chains. And then it snapped. The anti-magic collar shattered, and Xavier's power exploded outward in a wave of blue fire. The chains around his wrists melted away, and he rose from the table like a demon from the underworld. His body was crackling with electricity, his eyes blazing with stormfire, and he was no longer Xavier the broken. He was Xavier the Sovereign. "Get back," Caspian shouted, stumbling away. "Inquisitors! Get in here!" Zara stood frozen in the middle of the room, her hand on her sword, her face a mask of terror and awe. She looked at Xavier like she was seeing him for the first time. Like she was seeing the man he was always meant to be. "Xavier," she whispered. "Please. Do not do this." Xavier turned to her, his eyes blazing. "Do not do what? Do not fight for my life? Do not fight for the family you helped destroy?" "I did not help destroy your family. I tried to save you. I have always tried to save you." "By promising to kill me?" Xavier laughed, a harsh, broken sound. "That is a funny way of saving someone." The Inquisitors rushed into the room, their swords drawn, their faces twisted with hatred. They surrounded Xavier, their blades aimed at his heart. He looked at them, and he felt nothing. No fear. No anger. Just a cold, calm resolve. "You want a fight," he said. "You have got one." He raised his hand, and lightning shot from his fingertips, sending the Inquisitors flying against the walls. They crashed into the stone, their bodies crumpling like dolls. Xavier walked through the chaos, his feet barely touching the ground. "Xavier, wait." Zara grabbed his arm, her fingers digging into his skin. "Wait, please. I know you are angry. I know you hate me. But I can help you. I can help you escape." "Why would you help me?" Xavier asked, his voice cold. "You made a promise. You promised to kill me." "Because I love you." The words came out in a rush, raw and desperate. "I have always loved you. Every day I have regretted leaving you. Every day I have wished I could take it back. And I know that does not make up for what I did, but I can help you now. I can get you out of here." Xavier stared at her, his heart pounding. He wanted to believe her. He wanted to believe that there was still good in her, still love in her. But he had been burned too many times. "I do not need your help," he said. "I do not need anyone's help." He walked past her, heading for the door. But she grabbed his arm again, pulling him back. "Xavier, please." Her voice was cracking, her eyes filling with tears. "Please do not leave me again. I cannot lose you. I cannot lose you a second time." Xavier turned to look at her. She was so beautiful, even now. So broken. So desperate. And despite everything, despite all the pain she had caused him, he still felt something for her. He still cared. But he could not trust her. Not anymore. "I have to go," he said, pulling his arm free. "I have to find out who I really am. And I cannot do that with you." He walked out of the room, leaving her standing alone in the chaos. The temple was in turmoil. Inquisitors were running in every direction, their shouts echoing through the corridors. Xavier moved through them like a ghost, his body still crackling with energy. He had no idea where he was going. He only knew that he had to get out. He had to survive. He burst through the main doors and stepped out into the night. The rain had stopped, and the clouds were beginning to clear. Above him, the stars were shining. He looked up at the sky, and for a moment, he could see the ghostly shape of the Storm Sovereign circling above him. Xavier took a deep breath and started walking. He had no plan. No allies. No hope. But for the first time in years, he felt something he had forgotten. He felt free. The storm was coming. And this time, he was going to be ready.Latest Chapter

Chapter Ten: The Burning VowXavier stood on the beach of the Isle of the Forgotten, his body humming with newfound power. The Trials had changed him. He could feel it in every fiber of his being, in the way the storm energy flowed through him like a second heartbeat. He was no longer the broken man who had been dragged through the streets. He was something more. Something unstoppable."You look different," Alaric said, approaching him from the ship. "Stronger. More confident."Xavier turned to face the old sailor. "I feel different. I feel like I finally understand who I am and what I am meant to do.""And what is that?"Xavier looked out at the horizon. "I am going to destroy the empire. I am going to tear down everything my uncle has built and build something new in its place."Alaric nodded slowly. "That is a big task for one man.""I will not be doing it alone." Xavier turned back toward the temple. "Aurum promised me an army. Ancient dragons who have been sleeping for centuries.

Chapter Nine: The Isle of WhispersThe fog appeared on the eighteenth day.It rolled in from nowhere, thick and gray and suffocating, swallowing the ship like a hungry beast. Xavier stood at the bow, his eyes straining to see through the mist. But there was nothing. Just endless, empty whiteness."We are close," Alaric said, his voice hushed. "The Isle is near. The fog is its protection. Only those who are meant to find it can pass through."Xavier felt the storm energy pulsing in his veins, responding to something in the fog. He could feel it calling to him, pulling him forward. The Isle was waiting for him."How much longer?" he asked."A few hours, maybe less." Alaric's face was grim. "But we need to be careful. The fog is treacherous. It plays tricks on the mind. It makes you see things that are not there."Xavier nodded, his eyes fixed on the whiteness ahead. He could feel the presence of the Storm Sovereign growing stronger, its voice more insistent."Come to me," Tempest whispe

Chapter Eight: The Storm's FuryXavier moved through the city like a predator, his body still humming with the storm energy that had saved his life. The streets were empty now, the citizens hiding in their homes as the chaos from the temple spread through the capital like wildfire. But Xavier did not hide. He did not run. He was done running."You need to rest," Tempest said, its voice a constant presence in his mind. "Your body is broken. Your power is unstable. If you push yourself too hard, you will burn out.""I do not have time to rest," Xavier said, his voice flat. "The Inquisition is still hunting me. Sera and her rebels need me. And my uncle is still alive.""Your uncle is nothing. A mortal man playing at godhood. He cannot hurt you now.""He can hurt the people I care about." Xavier's jaw tightened. "He can hurt Zara."Tempest was silent for a moment. Then it spoke again, its voice softer than before. "You still love her.""I do not know what I feel anymore." Xavier shook his

No more endless cycle of humiliation and despair. The void welcomed him with open arms, promising peace, promising oblivion. All he had to do was let go.But then the screaming started. Not his screaming. Someone else's. A voice that was ancient and terrible and achingly familiar. It tore through the darkness like lightning through a storm cloud, shattering the silence, shattering the peace.Xavier's eyes snapped open. The anti-magic collar around his neck was glowing red hot. The metal was warping, cracking, tiny bolts of electricity arcing across its surface. The guards outside his cell were shouting, their voices high with panic. But Xavier could not hear them. All he could hear was the voice in his head."You are not done."The words were not spoken. They were felt. They were a presence in his mind, vast and overwhelming, like

Chapter Six: The Fledgling's HumiliationThe temple loomed before Xavier like a hungry beast, its white marble walls gleaming in the moonlight. He had spent the last two days planning, watching, waiting. He knew the guard rotations, the weak points in the defenses, the secret passages that only the nobility knew about. He had grown up in this place. He knew its secrets better than anyone. But knowing and doing were two different things. He slipped through a service entrance, his body pressed against the cold stone. The corridors were empty, the guards distracted by a disturbance Sera's people had created on the other side of the city. It was the perfect distraction. The perfect opportunity. He moved through the temple like a ghost, his footsteps silent on the marble floors. The lower levels were dark and damp, the air thick with the smell of dust and decay. He could feel the storm energy pulsing in his veins, a constant reminder of what he was and what he had become. The vault door lo

Chapter Five: The Dirty BargainThe docks were a maze of rotting wood and rusted chains, the air thick with the smell of fish and salt. Xavier followed Sera through the maze of ships, his eyes scanning the shadows for threats. Every creak of the wood made him flinch, every distant shout made his heart race."There," Sera said, pointing to a battered old ship tied to the end of the pier. "The Stormchaser. That is Alaric's vessel."Xavier studied the ship. It looked like it had seen better days, its sails patched and its hull scarred from countless storms. But there was something about it that felt right. Something that called to him."He is not going to be happy to see us," Sera warned. "Alaric does not like visitors. Especially not ones who bring trouble.""Then I will make sure I do not look like trouble," Xavier said.Sera laughed. "With that face? You look like trouble walking."They climbed aboard the ship, their footsteps echoing on the wooden deck. A grizzled old man emerged fro
