ch-10 The White Void
Light swallowed everything. There was no chamber. No chessboard. No walls. Only endless white stretching in every direction. Adrian blinked. The silence was unsettling. Even his footsteps made no sound. "Ghost?" Nothing. "Nathaniel?" No answer. He was alone. Or so it seemed. "You are not." The voice came from behind him. Adrian turned. The First Guardian stood several paces away, his black coat untouched by the endless white. "I thought the Trial had only one candidate." "It does." "Then why are you here?" "I am not." The Guardian smiled faintly. "You are speaking to your own understanding of me." Adrian frowned. "An illusion." "A memory." "A test." The Guardian walked past him. "The First Crown never tests strength." "It tests perception." As he finished speaking, the white world shattered like glass. Adrian found himself standing in the middle of a city. People laughed. Children chased each other through crowded s

The footsteps grew louder. Each step echoed through the ancient chamber like the toll of a distant bell. Adrian rose from his chair. Nathaniel did the same, his calm demeanor replaced by unmistakable concern. The massive stone doors continued to open until darkness filled the entrance. A silhouette emerged. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in a long black coat that seemed untouched by time. His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of the hood. Ghost's voice echoed through the chamber. "Identity verification failed." "No authorized record found." Nathaniel frowned. "That is impossible." "There are records for everyone who has ever entered a Crown Trial." The stranger stopped a few feet inside the chamber. Then he spoke. "I never entered." His voice was deep and strangely familiar. "I was left behind." Adrian's grip tightened. "Who are you?" The stranger ignored the question. Instead, he looked around the chamber as if seeing an old ho

Nathaniel took his seat across the chessboard. His movements were calm, precise, almost rehearsed. Adrian remained standing. The chamber was silent except for the faint crackle of torches burning inside iron sconces. Unlike the advanced technology of the bunker outside, the Trial Chamber looked centuries old. Stone walls. A wooden table. An ordinary chessboard. Nothing more. Ghost's voice echoed softly. "The First Crown does not measure strength." "It measures judgment." Nathaniel folded his hands. "Please." He gestured toward the empty chair. "Sit." Adrian remained where he was. "If this is a game, why is everyone outside risking their lives?" Nathaniel smiled. "Because they are not taking the trial." "They're fighting a war." "And so are you." Adrian slowly sat. "I don't see an army." Nathaniel looked at the chessboard. "You will." The board suddenly changed. The carved wooden pieces dissolved into shimmering light. The black and
ch-7 The Keeper of the First Crown
“Welcome back... Lady Seraphina Vale.”The name echoed through the bunker. No one spoke.Even Damian's expression had frozen. The silver-haired woman stood beneath the golden light of the First Crown corridor, perfectly composed, as though she had expected this moment for years. Her eyes settled on Adrian.“You have his face,” she said quietly.“But not his arrogance.”Adrian kept his pistol lowered but ready.“You knew my father?”Seraphina smiled faintly.“I knew Alexander before the world decided to fear him.”Elias took a cautious step forward.“You disappeared nineteen years ago.”“No.”She looked at him.“I was erased.”The words struck Adrian.Erased.Elias had used the same word when describing what had happened to Adrian's identity. It was not a coincidence.Ghost spoke again.“Lady Seraphina Vale.”“Former Keeper of the First Crown.”“Authority level restored.”The golden corridor brightened.Damian finally broke the silence.“This is impossible.”Seraphina turned toward him

The female voice faded.Silence followed. Then every wall inside the bunker trembled. The twelve sealed doors stood open, revealing corridors that had remained untouched for nearly two decades. Dust drifted through the air as ancient systems awakened one after another.Across the chamber, Ghost's face flickered back onto the central display. Its image distorted violently. For the first time since Adrian had entered the bunker, Ghost looked... unstable."External intelligence detected," Ghost said. The voice broke into static before continuing."Attempting... to... isolate..."The screen went black again.Adrian looked up."Ghost."No response.Damian laughed quietly despite the pistol aimed at his chest."You've lost your greatest advantage."Adrian didn't take his eyes off the screen."No."He slowly looked back at Damian."I've lost my easiest one."Elias stepped beside Adrian."What do we do?""We adapt."Those single words reminded Elias painfully of Alexander Vale.Alexander had

“He’s coming to take it himself.”Adrian’s words had barely left his mouth when the bunker lights changed.White became red.A low alarm rolled through the chamber.EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTEDElias turned toward the main screen.“How many?”Ghost answered immediately.“Three vehicles have entered the lower Blackthorn service level. Fourteen armed personnel confirmed. Additional heat signatures remain above ground.”Lucian retrieved his pistol from the floor.“Damian never travels with fourteen men.”Adrian looked at him.“How many does he usually bring?”“Enough to survive.”A second warning appeared.PRIMARY ELEVATOR OVERRIDE ATTEMPTElias moved toward the archive entrance.“We seal the bunker.”“No,” Adrian said.Elias stopped.“If we trap him outside, he will use Vanessa as leverage.”“He will use her regardless.”“Then we take that advantage away from him.”Adrian studied the bunker map.Blackthorn Tower stood directly above them. The hidden facility extended beneath its oldest foun
