Midnight Ventures
Late at night, the sharp sounds of footsteps echoed across the empty hallways of the laboratory. It was light out and everybody was supposed to be in their rooms leaving only type night duty guards patrolling the whole building. But none of this was enough to stop Selene. Not even bothering to mask her presence, Selene’s walked freely through the dimly lit corridors without fear of being discovered. Soon she reached an intersection where she stopped to look at the labeling in the wall to determine her destination. There was a security camera at the intersection but Selene ignored it knowing that nobody could see her through it. There virus program Selene had gotten through her brother’s connection naturally didn’t only work in the testing area but tbh had already been uploaded into the entire labs local network allowing Selene to take over part of the lab’s security system. Right now, Selene was practically invisible to all security cameras and she possessed the patrol schedule
Midnight Ventures 1
Ding!Fazz was roused from sleep by the ringing of his buzzer, alerting him to somebody being at the door. Feeling groggy, he rose from his bed dissatisfied and annoyed at the person disturbing him at this late hour of the day.Ding! The sound came again, sounding even sharper to Fazz’s ear, making him even crankier than when he just woke up.“I'm coming, I'm coming… jeez, can’t you see the time. It’s so late don’t you ever sleep?”Fazz reached the door and opened it, preparing to give whoever was on the other side a piece of his mind only to freeze when he saw who it was.Outside Fazz’s door were three people, Selene, Hobbs, and Jenkins. As soon as Fazz saw the three of them, his demeanor immediately mellowed, becoming more solemn and serious as if he instinctively knew something important was about to happen.Seeing Fazz appear, Selene said in a commanding tone.“Get dressed, we’re going out.”“Understood,” Fazz replied then not bothering to close the door, he quickly dashed inside
A Servant’s Purpose
Selene finished speaking but the three—Hobbs, Fazz, and Jenkins—didn’t say anything immediately. Instead, they exchanged looks with each other while remaining silent. Selene didn’t rush them but simply waited as the silence continued to fester. Eventually, Fazz broke the silence with a question. “Our master… who is he?” This question was not about the plan they were supposed to be discussing nor did it have any relevance to why they were there in the first place, but deep in the eyes of Hobbs and Jenkins, you could see that this question, more than any plans was the most important thing to them right now. And it made sense… Selene could understand. When she had been controlled by Cale, her first moments after that had been filled with this question. Although Cale’s power was infallible and without flaws, there is no way a normal person’s entire being could be directly overridden without leaving some traces. In this case, the traces presented themselves in the form of curiosity to
A Faithful’s Resolve
Selene still wasn’t done speaking. This time, while focusing her gaze on Hobbs, Jenkins, and Fazz, Selene asked them, “What about you three? Wasn't it the same for you… What did you think of the master when you saw him? What was your first instinct?” Silence… no one spoke for a good few seconds until finally, Hobbs spoke first. “The master controlled me first. When I saw him after that, I remembered all the things that were done to him and how I had a hand in it and I felt sick to my stomach. My first instinct after was to help him get away from it all—from all the pain and the hurt and the suffering.” Once Hobbs spoke, the others echoed similar words in agreement. “That’s right.” “That's exactly how I felt.” “It was just so natural as if it was always supposed to be like that.” Hobbs said to Selene, “You’re right. When I saw the master, he was weak and helpless so I didn’t hesitate to lure my colleagues to be controlled by the master because that is the only thing I cou
Clearing Fog… Selene’s Warning
Selene and the others continued to discuss way into the night. Just like Selene said, nobody came into the cafeteria so they weren’t discovered. Eventually, the four of them were done with their discussion, having reached a consensus about their next course of action regarding the plan.“Alright, that's everything. We will go with this plan for now,” Selene said, rounding up their meeting.“In the morning, as soon as the test starts, I will be attending to the master while you three act as we have discussed. It’s not possible to include you in the test as that would raise suspicion but as long as things go according to plan then there would be no problems.”“This is the end of this discussion, You can make your way back to your rooms on your own. Don’t worry about being seen by the cameras, I’ve already programmed it to ignore you guys from now on so you can move about as freely as you want but be careful not to be spotted by the guards.”“Also, there's one final warning I’ll give you
Unexpected Change Of Plans
Nobody answered Cale as they continued on with their work. Shortly after, they promptly wheeled Cale out of his room and toward their next destination. Cale tried not to panic as he swept his eyes everywhere looking for Selene amongst the crowd but he could not find her causing uneasiness to slowly settle in but he forced himself to remain composed. They left the previous room and for the first time, Cale was getting a good look at his surroundings where he was being held captive. What could he say… there wasn’t much to it. Just a mass of winding corridors and empty hallways. The journey took a few minutes but finally Cale arrived and was wheeled into a new location. At first glance, it was a large room with high ceilings and solid walls that looked like it was built to resist a powerful explosion, like a bomb shelter but on steroids. It was completely empty inside the room. There were no gadgets, no devices or furniture and nobody else except Cale who was eventually left insi
Selene’s Challenge
Krasin stared at Selene, his gaze highly confrontational but the slight twitch of lips at the edge of his mouth showed that Krasin was enjoying himself right now. His pupils were engorged, looking like deep black wells that almost filled the whites of his eyes and seemingly absorbing all light, a sign that Krasin was using his powers in an attempt to intimidate Selene—but it was also possible that he was using it to observe Selene’s distraught face in order to gain pleasure from her discomfort. This was ethically deplorable—using one’s powers to oppress and harm a colleague was frowned upon in any circle especially if it was done with the intent to harm or sabotage another. On any other day, this would’ve worked. After all Selene was an only a normal non awakened with less resistance to awakened powers but this time, it didn’t work. After falling under Cale’s control, and having her psyche rewired, Selene had actually developed a resistance to any other mind-altering powers or subst
Monkey’s Paw And Hat Tricks… Cale’s Improvised Plan
Back in the testing room… Cale listened carefully as a female researcher who introduced herself as Candor explained the test that was about to be conducted. With everything she said, Cale understood that something must have definitely gone awry with the plan. Selene was supposed to select easy targets for Cale to control which would help him increase his strength so that he could control stronger people until he was able to escape. But thinking of the armed guards that had led him all the way here and the high level of security and vigilance that was stationed around him, Cale doubted he could control a fly much less any of the people around. “What do I do now?” Cale wondered to himself. Cale was beginning to feel very anxious which caused his heart rate to rise. Candor who was speaking to Cale from a secure location that was fast away from the reinforced testing room Cale was kept in noticed the abnormality in Cale. Seeing the readings, Candor first looked at the person in charg
Monkey’s Paw And Hat Tricks…Cale’s Improvisation 1
Candor was at a loss for words. Speechless and confused, she asked Cale for clarification.“What did you say to me?”Cale answered, “You said that if I didn’t do anything there would be severe consequences, so I simply asked how severe the consequences would be.”Hearing this once again, Candor confirmed that she wasn’t hallucinating which meant that Cale was sef im Italy playing with her.Fumed, Candor said in a high-pitched voice, “Subject zero, I do not know what games you are trying to play right now ow but I advise that you not test my patience and do as you were told. Begin the test!”“…”“Why?” Cale, still not doing anything asked.“Why?” Candor repeated dryly.“Yes,” Cale said again.“Why should I do as you say… just because you said so? Is it because I’m your prisoner and you can do whatever you want to me so I must comply, or is it because of the so-called consequences you mentioned?”“…”Candor’s jaw hung open in disbelief. Once again she didn’t know what to say so she turn
Monkey’s Paw And Hat Tricks… Cale’s Improvisation 2
Candor’s threat brought Cale to a pause for a moment but then he began speaking not long after. “So your plan to ensure my cooperation is to threaten to inflict more of the same kind of pain that I have already suffered. That's your bright idea?” Cale scoffed, saying to Candor with derision dripping with every word uttered. “Lady, I don’t know who you are but you don’t seem to be cut out for this kind of work. Why don’t you bring back the other lady who was in charge… she seemed to be more fun to hang out with. You’re just dry. What even happened to her in the first place?” Here it was… finally Cale had his aim, the entire reason he had been talking to Candor all this while. That was to find out what had happened to Selene. Cale wanted to know this but he couldn’t very well come out directly and asked could he? No that would’ve been too suspicious and might make the others cautious. So Cale had come up with this round about way of asking about Selene. But it wasn’t entirely beca
