Candor’s Envy
“Are you saying that I am not as good as that woman?”When Candor heard the woman’s suggestion, she was immediately incensed and retorted vehemently.“No, thats not what I am saying. I just wanted to suggest…” seeing Candor’s reaction, the other woman immediately tried to explain herself only yo be rudely interrupted before she could get to it.“Leave it! Don’t bother saying anything. I know what you meant…” Candor blustered, then turning to the others she continued.“I know what all of you are thinking. You’re just like the subject, thinking I am incompetent aren’t you? Admit it.”Candor’s accusation stung hard and it clearly showed on the faces of the others who weren’t expecting it at all. Her second colleague—a middle-aged male with blonde hair which was a pretty rare trait for the generally black haired ceruleans that granted him a rather striking appearance—he bafflingly asked, “What has gotten into you, Candor? Where is all this talk coming from?”Being quite assertive, he dema
Candor’s Envy
Nobody knew this but Candor despised Selene as much as she envied her. Both of them were of similar age and highly accomplished ordinary women in their respective fields, but that was where the similarities ended. The difference were much more than anything they could have in common. Selene was not just accomplished, she was a genius who was hailed as a peer by people of very high distinction and could compete with those way older and more experienced than her in her field. She was also beautiful, self-confident, and daring, all of the things Candor was not. Candor’s appearance was average—she neither gorgeous nor unattractive nor was she as accomplished as Selene. For her age, Candor’s accomplishments only made her worthy enough to become Krasin’s assistant whereas Selene was a rival that Krasin obsessed over. Every time, Candor was always compared to Selene by Krasin who said things like, “why can’t you do such a simple thing? Look at Selene, she was able to come up with a sol
Compliance?
Cough, cough! Cale lay on the floor of the testing room coughing sporadically after being electrocuted. It was a painful experience but one that Cale found was actually quite bearable. But Cale was in too much pain to think about it so he instead decided to focus on something else to manage the pain. It was quiet for a minute or two by which time the pain had already subsided yet nobody had said anything to him yet. As the silence continued, Cale began to wonder if something wrong had happened with the others. Unfortunately, the crackle of the speaker turning on came soon after dashing whatever thought had been in Cale’s mind away. Candor’s voice sounded through the speakers and spoke to him in what Cale identified as a gloating tone in her voice. In response to Candor’s question, Cale said, “You’re sick lady, whoever you are, just like the last one… both sick in the head. I wonder where you all get off from electrocuting a poor harmless soul like me. As for if that just made
Eureka
“If I’m going to do this then it must be on my own terms, therefore I must deprive them of the ability to harm me. But how do I do that?” Cale thought rapidly. He planned to use this opportunity to practice control of his spatial power but to do that comfortably he couldn’t let Candor electrocute him willfully. Eyes darted quickly around the room, Cale reasoned, “Both times I was shocked i was in contact with the wall and floor so if I assume that electricity can flow through every surface in this room to affect me, then the only place it shouldn’t reach me is in the air.” “I must ascend into the air and remain suspended without touching the ground. But how am I going to achieve that? What I have is the power of space not flight… so how can one use space to fly?” Candor watched Cale remain silent without replying to her words, but this time, instead of pressing the button to electrocute Cale, Candor became curious and asked, “What are you doing? Are you still thinking of resis
Restriction
“Why isn’t it doing anything?” Someone asked.“Sorry, what did you say?” Candor who was focusing on Cale inquired prompting the last speaker to repeat himself.“The subject, why isn’t he doing anything? The levels of mana activity in his body suggest that he is using his powers but we can’t see anything.”Here someone else added, “Unless he is doing it but we just can’t see it because his power isn’t manifesting here.”“Are you suggesting a remote manifestation… that he is opening a rift somewhere else? But that can’t be right, the report says that the subject can only manifest his portals in any location that he can directly see.”“I agree, it doesn’t seem likely.”“Well I don’t,” someone else objected. “It might not be possible but it is highly probable isn’t it?”“Indeed,” this time someone was agreeing with the latter speaker.“Everything that was written in that report is just speculation based on just one battle with the subject and even then there were no apparatuses for monito
Cale’s Improvement
When Cale used his power, his view of the world changed completely. In his eyes, it was like Cale was looking at a high definition model of the entire world on a scale that was limited by regular three dimensions but extended beyond that to even higher dimensions.Unfortunately, perhaps due to his lack of strength, the higher dimensions in Cale’s perspective appeared blurry and out of focus. It was like they existed but could only be observed through fog-covered lenses that made it impossible to distinguish their exact information. But Cale could make out in clear detail everything in the three dimensional layer of space that he occupied, and even beyond that. Cale, with his spatial perspective could observe the interconnected and overlapping layers of three dimensional space, and could detect the basic information that comprised them. And amongst all of these dimensional layers, one stood out like a blazing sun to Cale, its light drawing and pulling him inwards.Cale knew without bei
Cale’s Improvement 1
“Yes, that's it. Gentle does it… not too rough so it doesn’t collapse.” Cale murmured to himself as he tried to delicately control his power. What he was attempting was something new, something he had just thought about in order to deal with his current situation. But due to his lack of control over his power, Cale’s progress was small. “There, that's right… just like that.” Cale stood in place, eyes closed in total concentration with nothing happening around him. There was no rift forming in space nor any visible distortion of the surrounding space for that matter, everything was normal. It looked like Cale was not using his powers at all. But what appeared normal to others in Cale’s eyes was a totally different scene entirely. Cale had inexplicably gained the ability to perceive the structure of space which appeared like giant cosmic model of the entire universe, allowing him to understand how space existed in a nigh cosmic scale. In Cale’s eyes, space was fluid, like a hu
Flying
Invisible waves rippled in the testing room as Cale exerted his powers to affect himself and the space around him. As a result, Cale’s body gradually elevated into the air in defiance of gravity.Cale was flying…When the others in the monitoring room saw this, their mouths hung open in disbelief, for they never expected such an outcome to happen.“How is he doing that?” someone asked.“I have no idea. His power should be spatial in nature with a focus on opening rifts in the fabric of space… then how is he flying now?”Just then, Candor quickly reacted and ordered, “Quick, check the readings. What are they telling us?”The blonde who was in charge of monitoring the spatial integrity of the testing room quickly reported.“The readings are negative for spatial destabilization, and spatial integrity is holding at normal levels. Whatever this is, it is not affecting the surrounding space, making it unlikely that the subject is using his powers.”Hearing this, Candor felt a burst of anger
Flying 1
Crackle“Subject Zero,” Candor’s voice came through the speaker, entering Cale’s ears.“What are you doing, and how exactly are you doing it?”Candor’s words suddenly interrupted Cale’s focus, causing him to become distracted, which affected his ability to maintain his power. As if a rope had snapped, Cale crashed to the ground with a muffled thud.“Argh!” Cale cried in pain, his body aching from where it had made contact with the ground. Fortunately, Cale hadn’t been flying very high in the sky, allowing him to avoid being injured by the fall.In the monitoring room, the researcher in charge of observing Cale’s mana activity said, “Mana activity has returned to zero percent.”To which Candor noted, “It appears the subject still lacks control of this phenomenon, which brings more validity to the speculation that this is his first time doing it.“This also means that flight is not an inherent aspect of his power but something developed post-awakening, explaining why he needs practice a
Fail Safe
Beep, beep, beep!“Mana activity level is beginning to rise again. The subject is attempting something,” a researcher quickly warned. In the testing room, picking himself off the ground once again, Cale floated into the air, still lying in a prone position that left him parallel to the ground. With a single thought, Cale righted himself until he was now facing the wall. Following that, he began to rotate in the air and perform various aerial feats like doing a flip in the air and moving his limbs around as he would when on the ground.Cale was practicing, trying to get used to this new ability of his, and Candor and the others just watched him. This time, nobody interrupted him and just let him be to discuss how he was flying.“The subject remains uncooperative. What do we do now? We have no way of explaining how he is able to do what he is doing. From the looks of things, this test is a failure.”It was the blonde researcher who spoke, and the words he uttered were what everyone else
