Chapter 41
Roland handed over a tablet showing the photo of the scientist. “Do you have any more information about him?” William asked. “Apparently he is a renowned scientist from Wentworth City and was a major factor in the success of Lakewood Enterprises, but apparently he went missing about 5 months ago.” Roland replied. William's eyes widened. “Missing?” “Yes, his family filed a missing complaint for him after he never showed up from work.” Roland replied. “Shortly after, his family was nowhere to be found either. If I had to guess, I'd say Ryker kidnapped him and is forcing him to work on the bioweapon.” Roland explained. “I think right now our main objective should be finding this Dr. Frankenbaum.” “I'm already on it. I've run his face through facial recognition software to see if he matches any CCTV footage anywhere in the world. I'll let you know once we get a hit.” About two hours later, Roland returned. “I think I found him” “Footage shows him entering an apartment building on
Chapter 42
The General walked in to see Dr. Frankenbaum sitting at his desk. “General Ryker,” Frankenbaum greeted, quickly rising to his feet, his voice tight. “What brings you here at this hour?” Ryker said nothing at first. Instead, he closed the door behind him with a slow, deliberate click, the metallic sound slicing through the silence. He strode forward, his black leather trench coat swaying with each step, then eased himself into the chair opposite the doctor like he owned the room. He lit a tobacco cigarette, briefly illuminating his cold eyes. He took in a heavy drag before releasing the white smoke out of his mouth. “How's the bioweapon progressing?” he asked, his voice low and blunt. Frankenbaum adjusted his glasses, trying to maintain composure. “Very well. All core systems are stable. We are on track to complete the final phase in about three weeks.” he replied. “That won't do.” Ryker cut in sharply, before taking another drag of the cigarette and exhaling. We're moving t

The general turned away from the door and began to walk towards the closet. Ryker's brow formed a hard line. “What's in the closet?” Dr. Frankenbaum gave a nervous laugh. “Nothing. Just my clothes and labcoat.” William held his breath as the General walked towards the closet. The stopped for a moment, placing his hand near the gun at his waist before swinging the closet door open. However, aside from the hung clothes, it was empty. “I told you, it's just my clothes.” Frankenbaum said, trying to sound calm, although beads of sweat had been gathering on his forehead. Ryker grunted as he left the room. “Remember, you have a week to get it ready.” Dr. Frankenbaum breathed a sigh of relief as the General left. “He's gone. You can come out now.” he whispered to William. William cautiously rolled out from under the bed where he had been hiding. “That was close.” he said as he dusted himself off. Frankenbaum fell back to his seat. “He's moved the test run up. It's going to happ

“I need some sort of distraction. Call Rex and tell him to come meet me immediately.” William said before ending the call. About fifteen minutes later, Rex pulled up with three of his men. He stepped out of the vehicle, adjusting his jacket as he approached William with a calm, confident stride. “We're here, sir. What do you need us to do?” Rex asked, eyes scanning the area instinctively. “I need to get into that building,” William said, nodding toward the warehouse in the distance. “And I need someone to distract the guards so I can slip in and out without anyone noticing,” he added. Rex cracked his knuckles and grinned. “We’ll handle it.” He motioned for his men to follow, then leaned toward William. “Give us three minutes.” William nodded and melted into the shadows behind a line of parked trucks. Rex and his men strolled up toward the main road that ran parallel to the warehouse. A moment later, two of them began arguing loudly and dramatically. One shoved th

Roland showed William some footage on his screen. “I was able to hack into the CCTV footage of the building. It seems they are being held on the fourth floor. Room 75.” “Are you sure?” William asked. “They constantly bring food for two people and the room is guarded, so I'm guessing it must be Dr. Frankenbaum’s wife and son.” Roland explained. William gave an approving nod. “Alright. Good job.” “We have to move quick. The Dr. has about three days left to complete the bioweapon. If we are going to convince him to sabotage it, we have to act as soon as possible.” William added. Roland's brows furrowed. “There's still a problem though.” William raised a brow. “What?” “Think about it. If we rescue the Dr Frankenbaum's family, General Ryker is going to know something is up, and it might mess up the whole plan.” Roland explained. William paused to think before finally speaking. “You're right. But I think I have a way for us to rescue them without the General being suspicious

The explosion roared through the air, a fireball erupting from the fourth-floor windows. Glass and debris scattered across the street and sirens wailed in the distance. Inside the van, Jayden flinched and buried his face in his mother’s coat. She whispered, “It’s okay, baby. It’s over.” William glanced at her. “No. It’s just beginning. But you’re free now. Both of you.” Mia looked at him, her eyes brimming with tears. “They’ll think we’re dead?” William nodded. “By the time the fire department gets in, the place will be burnt beyond recognition. “The bone residue I left would confirm that they were people inside, but they won't be able to identify it. Ryker will definitely think you're dead.” William added. Mia swallowed. “But if they find out…” “They won’t,” William said firmly. She nodded, gripping her son tightly. “Thank you for rescuing us.” Meanwhile, back at the apartment was total chaos. The guards guarding the outside of the building were in shock. The guards sta

All official reports pointed to a gas leak as the cause of the explosion. There was also evidence that Mia and her son had died in the fire. However, something didn’t feel right Natasha. She just couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it. Her plan was to review CCTV footage around the apartment building just before and after the explosion and see if she could find anything suspicious. She sat alone in her surveillance room, staring at multiple angles from nearby street cameras. One of the cameras partially captured a van pulling up across the street. It was a dark van with no plate number and it remained idle for several minutes. No one got out, at least from the angle that she could see. And some minutes before the explosion, the van was gone. Natasha leaned in, rewound the feed, and watched again. It didn’t feel random. If it was just a passerby, why sit there? Why leave the scene so quickly? Her gut told her something was off. She pulled up another angle and th

Natasha folded her arms and leaned against a metal table. “So let me get this straight. You plan to turn Ryker’s right-hand men against him?” William nodded without hesitation. She scoffed lightly. “That’s suicide. Thomford and Rayner are practically glued to his boots.” “They're loyal,” William said, “because Ryker has made them promises, but if they think he’s going to betray them…“ “They won’t take it well,” Natasha finished slowly. William turned and opened a hard case resting on the crate beside him. Inside was the AI mask. Matte black with subtle sensors lining the surface. He lifted it out gently and showed it to Natasha “This is how we make them doubt Ryker.” Natasha frowned, looking confused. “A mask? How’s that going to help” “It’s more than just a mask,” William said. “This mask the ability to perform facial mimicry and voice modulation” She crossed her arms. “So you are going to pretend to be someone?” “Not just anyone” William put on the mask and t

“What are you doing here?” Thomford asked cautiously. “Wait….was it you who sent us the video?” Rayner interjected. “Yes. That was me. I’m glad you accepted my invitation.” William replied. William motioned to two chairs nearby. “Kindly take your seats and I’ll explain why I have asked you to meet me today.” Rayner and Thomford took their seats, both of them still cautious of William. Rayner wasted no time in questioning William “So why exactly are we here? And what was that video all about?” William took his seat across from them. “I want to stop the bioweapon project.” A look of surprise formed on both of their faces. Rayner scowled. “Why? Why now? You funded this damn project. The bioweapon wouldn’t exist without your money.” William didn’t flinch. “And that’s exactly why I’m here. Because I know what Ryker’s planning to do with it.” Thomford crossed his arms. “You’ll have to explain better.” “As you know General Ryker is planning to test the bioweapon across Crenshaw
Chapter 50
The underground facility buzzed with tension. Soft lights lined the ceiling casting a glow on the polished concrete floors. There were armed guards who stood along the walls, still and focused. Seated were some of the world’s most dangerous men. Crime bosses, black market arms dealers, and paramilitary leaders. These were men who mostly lived in the shadows. Ryker walked into the room where Dr. Frankenbaum was making preparations for the showcase. The Dr. was being watched by two guards. His lab coat was neatly pressed but his face looked pale. Ryker stepped closer to him, his voice low and menacing. “I assume the weapon is ready?” Frankenbaum gave a sharp nod. “Yes, General. The compound has been synthesized and all systems are functioning.” Ryker’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Good. Because if it doesn’t work, you know the consequences.” Dr. Frankenbaum swallowed hard. “You said if it works, I’d be free to leave. That I’d get my wife and children back.” Ryker’s lips curled in
