THE DEVIL CALLED BENJAMIN FINNS
The smell of antiseptic and metallic smell of blood was what hit the sterile air of ward 001, Crescent Hospital. The sharp and steady beep, beep, beep of a heartbeat monitor cut across the room, displaying the heartbeat of Gabriel Finns on the screen. He laid on the bed, a red tube snaking to his arm, passing blood into his system. The stab in his belly had been wrapped with bandages. Gabriel's eyes were wide open, cold, staring into the ceiling sharply like a demon awakened from a 1000 years deep slumber. His eyes were red with anger, his fist curled into a tight fist at his side as anger knotted in his chest. For the first time in his life, someone stood up against him and called his bluff. And now he ended up in a hospital with a cut in the belly, receiving treatment. Death wish! Gabriel lifted himself to sit on the bed but a sharp pain shot from his injury point, paralyzing his brain for seconds. “Fuck!" His jaw tightened, his fingers clenched tighter. He gave up and laid
A COFFIN FROM THE FINNS
“It was a man...at Silk studio. He challenged me and stabbed me in the belly with my dagger.” Gabriel responded, the scene at Silk studio still alive in his memory. “A man?” Benjamin rasped thoughtfully, his voice gravel-rough. “He did this to you?" His eyes shifted to the bandage, red with anger. Gabriel nodded gently. Benjamin's grip tightened on the cane, his jaw moving— gritting. Seeing that his father was gnashing his jaw, Gabriel knew something very cruel was about to go down. It's one of those eerie quietness that his father invokes dangerous and grimy decisions. “I'm going to burn down the Silk studio to dust.” He snarled, his eyes molten enough to heat iron— rage. “I'll find that man even if that'll be the only thing I'll do throughout my remaining existence. I'll have him stabbed in the belly multiple times till he gives up the ghost and I'll have his body disposed off in the middle of the hottest desert where vultures would feed on his carcass!” He said, his voice dripp
MANSION AND QUESTIONS
“What is this place called?" Juliana asked the driver as her gaze darted left and right, taking in the monumental buildings she was seeing behind gated fences. She had never been to a place like this before. It looks like a sumptuous estate yanked out from a magazine. The atmosphere was sirene and sterile. Merely seeing the exotic cars moving along the road, she knew this place wasn't meant for ordinary people. Soon, Kane's car slipped into the gate of one of the mansions. As the Taxi was moving in front of the gate, Juliana looked in the direction and saw Kane stepping down from the car. But that wasn't what made her jaw drop— It was the gigantic architectural layout that stood in the centre of the compound. It was different from the ones Juliana had been seeing all along. “What..what is he doing in a place like this?" She wondered, her mind reeling. Kane was just a struggling banker who had zero in his account. Throughout their marriage, Kane had nothing to boast of except his b
THE INVITATION
“That's ink..Red ink." Kane said quickly on seeing the blot of damp blood that clung to the sleeve of his suit. It must have splashed on it when he stabbed Gabriel earlier. Isadora stared at it in quiet observation. She nodded and then shrugged, saying, “Okay.” then she walked away. Kane stared at her receding figure till she was completely out of sight. He sighed and walked into his room. He pulled out his phone and put a call across to James. A knock came on the door after some minutes and James walked into the room. He bowed gently as he greeted politely. “Good afternoon, master Kane.” “How's she?" Kane asked impatiently, barely acknowledging his greeting as he simply waved in response. “You mean Isadora?" Kane nodded. James cleared his throat and began with reverence in his voice. “She seems to be getting used to the surroundings, Boss. I saw her with the maids in the kitchen earlier. She was handling the meal.” He said. Kane smiled lightly and nodded gently. His expr
CHEAT AND SHIT!
It took Juliana about fifteen minutes before she got to Globulex bank. Immediately the Taxi pulled over at the curb, she yanked the door handle and pushed it open, desperation and impatience palpable in her reaction. She slammed the door shut more than she intended then began strutting toward the building of Globulex. The taxi driver snapped, realizing she was yet to pay the taxi fare. “Madam!” He called, halfway out of the car already. “You've yet to pay!" He said directly, his voice loud enough to make a few heads turn. Juliana stopped sharply on her track and spun on him. She caught people looking at her and she couldn't help but feel slightly embarrassed by the unwanted attention the driver had just caused. Her face twisted with a mix of disgust and exasperation as the driver walked up to her. She rolled her eyes on him, her face a mask of anger. “You should have taken a microphone and announced it loudest.” She hissed, fumbled through her bag and tossed him a $100 dollar note.
THE WEIGHT OF HIS ABSENCE
****** Badmus wasn't picking up her calls— Sixteen missed calls, yet he didn't return any of her calls right from the time she left the bank. She desperately needed to find out something about her Ex-husband. Had Kane built an asset behind her back during their three years of marriage?! He stumbled into her apartment and tossed her designer bag on the sofa. She strutted into her bedroom, her heels clicking sharply against the marble— The same bedroom she'd once shared with Kane. She stood in the centre of the room scanning everywhere, her arms balanced on her waist. The room felt empty and void. At that moment, the silence shattered loudly like glasses clattering on steel— she felt Kane's absence. Loneliness clawed her heart as the feeling of kane's absence struck her soul. Memories of the sweet and bitter moment in their marriage flooded back in waves. The night he would come home with a carton of pizza and they shared it with kisses. The unforgettable moment he would stay up late
MIND WAR
Juliana forced herself to stand but her knees buckled under the heavy weight of her torso. Her breath was shallow and heavy. Her mascara was a mask of smeared damp clay. She sauntered across the room which looked really messy— papers littering over the floor, clothes— Kane clothes sprawling over the floor like garbage. She collapsed onto the bed, the loan grant still clutched in her hand like it was a lifeline. A clue to dig about her Ex-husband who she never cared about in the past. Did she care now? She stared into the paper for the umpteenth time. The prints blurred in her visions. “What...what did he use all that money for?" Her mind reeled, a carousel of chaos and possibilities. In the next seconds, her posture stiffened, her confusion shifting into determination. “I must find out about him. Everything.” She said, her grip tightening on the paper. She trudged into the bathroom, her naked body leaned against the cold tiled wall, her chin lifted as the water poured down to her f
UNEXPECTED VISIT
Her heart missed several beats for a fleeting moment. Her jaw parted slightly, eyes wide with surprise. The name; 'Kane' looped in her head like it was a haunting ghost. “What's he doing here at this time of the night? He lost way?” she wondered, a mix of surprise and confusion masking her face. She never expected he could be one ringing her door bell. Before she knew it. She was already opening the door as though she was already yearning for his presence. The door handle was cold on her grip, her heart slamming the wall of her chest. Her emotions warred, hesitation and pride battling with curiosity. After a moment of grappling with her emotions, she gently pulled back the door handle and the door gave way and there he stood. The man he called worthless. Kane Everest. He clad a plain white designer shirt that has the emblem of Luis Vuitton on it. His slacks were blacks, matching the design on the shirt in a way that made him look impressive. He looks different. His presence wa
RUSTED BUT WORTHY
Juliana paused and looked down at her finger. The ordinary ring which Kane used to propose to her years ago was still there. No glitters. No sclints. Just subtle silver foil. “I want that back.” Kane said, his voice calm but firm. His expression was cold and unreadable.Juliana froze. Kane had come all the way at that dead hour of the night to collect an ordinary ring? She didn't remember it, she could have pulled the ring and tossed it in the trash.Though Kane bought the ring for just $400 but it wasn't about the cost. What made the ring worthy was the effort, the sweats that dropped from his body before he could buy it. He could afford millions of the same ring now and even buy one that is far more better than it. But someone like Juliana don't deserve his efforts. Not anymore.A cruel amusing smile split Juliana's face before she burst into a wave of laughter, her cheek flushing red as the laughter rang with no end in sight, bouncing off the wall.A forgotten tears slipped fro
THE FUEL BEFORE THE FIRE
“Who the heck are you?" A gruffy voice like a rusted blade came behind Kane. The sterile air shifted.Kane stepped to the side gently and looked at the back to see Badmus kenneth, the ex-boss, standing behind him, his suit wrinkled and loose, his cufflinks out of place. His eyes were bloodshot and droopy— it wasn't due to anger but as an effect of the alcohol. The stench polluted the small air between them, a mix of beer, blunt and sweat. One hand jammed in his pocket while the other hand balance against the doorframe, grappling to keep his posture steady.Kane wasn't surprised to see him there. He stared at him expressionlessly then a light taunting smirk curled the corner of his lips seeing his disheveled appearance.Juliana on the other hand was taken aback. Not only had Badmus come at an unusual hour but also his appearance was clumsy and detestable— it wasn't welcoming. Her cheek flushed red, burning with embarrassment. What made it worse for her was Kane's presence.Suddenly, B
