[31] A night in the street corner 1
A shiver ran down Jace's spine as a stranger, someone he's never seen before and had no business with was pointing a knife to his throat in the middle of the street. Because the atmosphere was getting darker, there weren't so many people drawn to the unfortunate scene, even the Taxi driv peeked through the window to yell at whoever slammed the door like that. "You are going to pay if it's broken!" He warned, and sped off, leaving Jace behind with whoever this figure was. "Just keep moving," The man whispered into his his ear, lowering the pocket knife to Jace's right side, "If you try anything this knife will sink into your skin, and if the knife doesn't kill you, the poison will." His words were terrifying, but Jace wasn't listening. His eyes were glued to the system's screen where his new task was displayed. [ New Task] [ Survive the attack and return home] [ Difficulty: Easy] [ Failure= death] [ Success= Monetary compensation, a brand new car. The Temporary reward would f
[32] A night in the street corner 2
With a deep breath, Jace observed his oppressors for a few seconds, waiting for the right time to strike. He needed the pocket knife to be in just the right position and away from his throat as well as in a good grabbing range. Coincidentally or perhaps luckily, everything was set within a few seconds and Jace was quick to act. He snatched the pocket knife from the hand of the man behind him and stabbed it into his lap. "Argh!" The man screamed, staggering backwards and and the gun falling from his hand. He could barely move, feeling excruciating pain, and eventually, he fell to the ground, trying to pull the knife out of his lap. The other two acted very quickly, dashing toward Jace with deadly precision. They were also armed with pocket knives but no guns. Each time they struck, Jace dodged, then swiftly returned their missed strike with a powerful blow. It was two against one, but it didn't feel like it, because Jace appeared as though he wasn't even trying to beat them up.
[33] Wrong Assumption
Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Tess couldn't take her mind off the idea that someone mysteriously paid for all her mother's treatment, covering every last fee up until the medication she might get when she's been discharged.Unsettled, she tapped Alexa whose head was resting on her lap, and asked her,"Are you sure you met the man who paid for Mom's treatment?""Yes," Alexa replied, briskly lifting her head,"He first came to the waiting ward and looked for you, but when he didn't see you, he left immediately, and the next thing I know... Mom was being moved out of the waiting room for treatment.""Do you know what he looks like?" Tess inquired, hoping for any detail that'll shake off the idea that Jace paid for everything."I can't remember much," Alexa replied,"I think he has really smooth hair, and... I don't know what he wore, but he didn't look so bad.""Nah," Tess shook her head from side to side. That was just the information she needed."Jace always looks bad. Even when I c
[34] Flashback 1
Upon getting home, Jace's mother gasped at the sight of her son stained with blood and covered with numerous bruises. Apparently, Jace didn't realise that there was a limit to the number of times he'd get free healing from the system, and knowing this, it cost twenty coins to heal all his wounds, he chose to tend to them instead. However, now that his mother freaked out, he realised it was a bad idea. "I got into a fight," he said even before she asked, "But I'm alright, they didn't even hurt me badly." "I called you less than thirty minutes ago!" She exclaimed. "My phone was smashed," Jace replied, raising his new phone for her to see. "I got a new one tonight, Max took me... "Max?" "That's a long story, Mom. I'd explain when I'm in less pain. For now, I want to focus on having a bath and sorting out all of my scholarship documents. I'd be leaving this week." "You told me that last night," his mother muttered, concern etched all over her face. "Just go take care of
[35] Flashback 2
Jace started work immediately, not like he had any other choice but to take it, regardless of the pay. He knew how much a hundred dollars could contribute to his life and that of his mother, and at the end of his conversation with Lincoln, the greedy boss promised to give him a raise after two months, that if he was obedient and compliant. But at the end of the first month, Lincoln paid half of Jace's salary, claiming that he only worked for two weeks in that month, and did not deserve full pay. Although upset, Jace refused to quit the job; he encouraged himself with the idea that things would get better.Plus, he wasn't the only one who got treated that way, but everyone who worked for him, and that's why most of Lincoln's staff were quick to quit when they got better opportunities and even one with similar pay. Aside from Jace, there was another staff member who got hired a year later, and that was Tess. At first glance, Jace fell in love with her. Her beauty, voice and personality
[36] Five-Phased plan
After that night, Jace noticed the shift in Lincoln's behaviour towards him; he no longer smiled at him like he used to, and often found fault in whatever Jace did, regardless of its perfection. Aside from that night, he also called Jace numerous times into his office to offer the same job, and to convince him that there was no harm in such business. He promised security and a good lawyer in case of any mishaps that get him in trouble, but Jace declined each time, using his academic pursuits as an excuse. At the same time, Jace could only pray that he passes the scholarship exam and gets accepted, else he'd be stuck here, with a boss who wouldn't give him a break. He also feared that if Lincoln persisted for too long and he continued to decline, he would get fired. Luckily, everything worked out for Jace, getting the scholarship into Tristan Coleman's university was the best day of his life. While his mother thought he was only happy about the school, Jace knew deep down that it
[37] Suprised to see me?
"Where are you going?" Jace's mother asked, stealing a glance at the clock that hung in the living room, and then back at her son, who appeared to be leaving the house at past nine pm."I need to get something from the restaurant downstairs, and I might eventually stay there to watch the current football match," Jace replied. Thanks to his new life, he's had to master the art of telling lies and making them up, very quickly too. Good thing he'd soon leave for school and no longer have to worry about his mother monitoring his every move."I heard that your boss was caught in drug dealing today, it's been going viral." She added without taking her eyes off the phone,"The FBI is finally looking into the case.""Yes," Jace nodded,"I had to report him again, or they won't do anything about it. He's finally going to get what he deserves for nearly bringing my life to an end.""And you are sure he never invited you to join him?" She asked, bringing up a topic that Jace had successfully av
[38] If you win
"Greatly surprised!" Lincoln responded, his aura changing at intervals, from anger to solemn and from rage to silence. He wasn't quite settled in his head and didn't know what reaction was suited for the occasion. But one thing was certain: whatever happened tonight would redefine his life henceforth. Whether he'd end up in jail, get publicly humiliated or win the game and silence every online criticism, tonight would mark the tie breaker. "And I see you didn't come alone, you this reckless little boy whom I offered a job to in a platter of gold, had returned with an army to ruin my life... how shameful, how ungrateful and how unexpected of you to repay me in such manner. I should have always known it was you." While he was speaking, Jace was silent, without changing position or moving a muscle. He had to calculate every one of his moves because the cameras were watching, and he carefully crafted and rehearsed his words because the audio sensor would pick them up very clearly. "H
[39] I can now go to college
In addition to his temporary rewards, the system gave Jace incredible strength, agility and unpredictable fighting tactics. He wasn't afraid of taking Lincoln's head because the old drug dealers couldn't stand a chance against him. "I will kill you, Jace," Lincoln said, making the first move. He closed the distance between them and threw the first punch, which Jace dodged effortlessly. "You will die a painful death." "I sure hope so," Jace scoffed, retaliating with an upper cut that Lincoln never saw coming. He staggered backwards, grabbing his jaw where Jace's punch had landed. The impact from the punch coursed through his nerves, with unimaginable pain. "Why did you involve Tess in this? Why did you send her to Sector 9?" Jace inquired. This time, he dashed toward Lincoln, pushing him to the ground and delivering numerous punches to his face. Lincoln tried to protect his face with his hand and eventually pushed Jace off him. He stood up immediately, before wiping the blood of
[40] New Task
Lincoln's arrest made waves all over news channels and social media platforms. The signature hashtag 'BIG BOSS CAUGHT SELLING SNOW ' was the most discussed and debated subject on the conversation platform. The video of Jace beating him up in the bar also resurfaced online; however, Jace's face was hidden throughout the fifteen-minute clips. Even his voice was changed, and it highlighted every single word that Lincoln said, adding to the mountain pile of evidence against him. The video was released to the main stream and was promoted by the system, so not even the best and most sophisticated software could find its source, making it another subject for debate. All these were included in Jace's detailed plot. Jace himself was publicly credited by the police department and the FBI for his assistance in their investigation. And even though not many people recognised it because of other headlines, Jace was grateful and satisfied. Now, with Lincoln gone from his life forever, the young
