Chapter 1

[1] Lawless 1

"Please, I swear I did not do it, I have never touched that substance in my life, please you have to believe me, there has been some mistake...

"Sir, I'd suggest you stay quiet," said the cop whilst locking up the handcuffs and urging Jace to move.

"I know my son," the boy's mother cried from behind. She didn't know whether to believe that Jace tried to smuggle in a hard substance into the state or not, but still she didn't want anything to happen to him.

"He will never do that, I beg you check the cameras, someone must have snuck it into his bag...

"Mam, please stay back," another cop ordered her, his voice firm and his expression fierce. He couldn't care less about her age, fear or anxiety, he had a job to do, and it'll certainly pay him well to catch a smuggler.

"He is my son," she protested, tears tickling down her cheeks,

"Please don't hurt my son I beg you, he didn't do it... I can swear. " Before she could finish her statement, the cops had forced Jace into the van and closed the doors, leaving her out.

But the distressed mother was persistent, slamming her palm on the van's windows and pleading with tears in her eyes.

"Please, don't take him away," she cried but no one listened,

"Don't hurt him please," she begged, but without any words, the driver started the engine.

Inside the car, Jace’s heart raced with trepidation. He didn't try to smuggle any hard substance; he knew he was innocent, but no one would believe him. He was also aware of the punishment that comes along with such a crime in the state, death.

The thought of death alone sent a shiver down his spine, he never thought he'd die so early, and for a crime he did not commit.

With fear, he looked at the window, his heart ached watching his mother plead with the cops from the outside. Watching her cry broke his heart, and seeing her get ignored was far worse than anything else.

As her only son, he knew how broken she must have felt on the inside. But there was nothing he could do, he was surrounded by cops on both sides of the van. He wanted to tell her goodbye even if it was for the last time, he wanted to hug her again and tell her how much he loved her. Because who knows? This might be the last time she'll see him.

As the engine started, a stream of tears trickled down his chin. He watched his mother run after the car as it drove down the lane. She was fast, but the van was faster and soon she was left behind.

From the rear view mirror, he watched her fall to her knees, crying and wailing while some passersby tried to get her out of the way.

"Please, God," Jace muttered under her breath,

"Please save me, God, you know I didn't do this, you know that I was framed, please save me... please."

"Hey!" The cop by his right nudged him,

"Cut it out. There will be no God to save you here today, you should have thought about that before coming here with a bag loaded with **** "

"I swear on my life, I did not...

"I said cut it out and stay quiet!"

Silence stretched on for half an hour, the drive to the station was intoxicating, he air around the van was thick with tension, and Jace felt like his life was coming to an end with each passing second.

"Get down," the cop on his left ordered, his tone harsh with a hint of impatience.

It was difficult to get out of the van with his hand cuffed to the back, and this caused a little bit of delay that annoyed the cop for some reason.

"You are taking too freaking long!" He growled and pulled Jace by the neck of the shirt. He forcefully dragged him out of the van, and because Jace was caught unaware, he lost balance and fell face-first on the concrete floor.

"Argh!" He winced in pain, wiggling on the floor like a fish out of the water.

The same cop who threw him down picked him up with a frown and said,

"You had better do as you are told or else I'm  going to make this quick and shoot your head off, got it?"

Jace did not respond, he couldn't. His nose was bleeding from the fall, and his face was bruised. He couldn't fathom how much he was going through and how much more he'd experience. He prayed silently for a miracle, anything to vindicate him from the mess his boss had thrown him into.

Yes, his boss.

While packing for his flight earlier, Jace had been sceptical about the little box his boss at the bar had given him. He had told Jace that it was a present for his niece, and when he arrived at his destination, someone would pick it up from the airport.

Since it was just a small box, about the same size as a phone box, Jace didn't put much thought into it. He tossed it into his travelling bag, zipped it up and went on his way.

Unfortunately, the airport devices picked it up, examined the box and confirmed that the substance was indeed illegal, hidden inside a phone's interior.

Jace didn't know what substance it was, he didn't even know what was in the box, and now here he was, facing the law, the unjust law that wouldn't give him a fair hearing. If he were to be the son of a wealthy and influential figure, certainly he'd be treated differently.

Soon, he was standing before the Chief Inspector General,  a fierce-looking man in uniform. He appeared to be in his late thirties, with scars of past clashes still evident on his skin.

"You are so young," he uttered, and for a second Jace thought his prayers had been answered. A man who would hear him out. However, the Chief's next statement caught him off guard.

"It's always young people like you who do this nonsense. Your execution will be made public, just to sound a warning to the others!"

"Sir...

Jace felt his heart stop beating for a moment. Not only did the Chiefs refuse to hear him out, but also passed down the judgment without a trial, a testament to how lawless they could be.

"Lock him up with the others!" Commanded the chief,

"Boys like these need to learn their lessons."
