[41] That's not him
"Disrupt their plans and eliminate them first to avoid future complications." This sentence rang repeatedly in Jace's head as he thought about how to disrupt their plans. First, he wanted to take advantage of the surveillance camera being used to track him, and then every other plan would be effective two days later. While making his plan, Jave left the apartment for a convenience store. He wanted to make a few more purchases for school, but little did he know that he was about to meet with Tess, in the most disappointing way possible.Tess had given all credits to Ben, who gladly accepted. He agreed with Tess when she thanked him for paying her mother's hospital bills, and he claimed to have gotten her all those presents, including the exotic high heels that she always wanted.Tess instinctively believed that all these gestures were signs that Ben would do anything to win her heart. However, something was unsettling. Her mother was discharged the day after Tristan had paid for her f
[42] Nonsense talk
Jace walked into the convenience store just like he always did, only one thing on his mind, to find the right clothes for college. He was specific about the style he wanted, something youthful but simple. He doesn't want to flaunt his wealth in college, but also doesn't want to look like someone who was struggling to stay alive. While in the male clothes section, picking out a few t-shirts from the hangers, he heard a familiar voice in the section behind him. Not one, but two familiar voices, one belonging to a female whom he's never failed to recognise and the other belonging to a man, someone he has probably had an encounter with. "Try this one," said the female voice, "It suits you a lot." Jace paused, his hand stuck on the hanger like a statue, he heard the voice again and his jaws dropped in shock, "Tess?" Quickly, Jace wanted to go to the other section to see her, but suddenly the sales lady who escorted him called his attention. "Is there any problem sir?" "Oh," Jace m
[43] I did it for your mom
Tess’s brows furrowed at Alexa’s words, her gaze flickering with confusion for a split second. She stared from Jace to Ben and back, and all of a sudden, he doubt vanished once more. “That’s impossible,” she muttered, turning away and shaking her head as if trying to erase the truth. “You must be mistaken, Alexa, I know it was a really scary day, so you probably don’t remember clearly.” “No, I do,” Alexa insisted quietly, still holding the sneakers to her chest. “It was him. He was the one who argued with the doctors. He even yelled at them... and then he paid.” “Tess,” Betty chimed in softly, “I told you. I saw him that day too... he came with a box of shoes and presents. Why don’t you believe us?” "I can't," Tess whispered to herself. "It's not possible." She wouldn't even look at her sisters. Instead, she turned her anger back toward Jace, her arms folded tightly across her chest. “So what, Jace?” she snapped. “You think you can just walk in here, act like
[44] The lady in distress
The automatic doors of the store whispered open, and Jace stepped out with quiet grace, his arms full of neatly folded shopping bags, nothing excessive. The bags rustled gently as he moved, the crisp scent of new fabric clinging to them.Behind him, Max followed at a short distance. The young man was alert as always, dressed in casual black, earpiece in one ear, scanning the sidewalk like he was always expecting something to go wrong. He moved to take the bags from Jace, reaching one hand out.“Let me help you...“No, I’ve got it. Thanks," Jace calmly declined,“Just open the trunk."The black sedan sat at the curb like a quiet sentinel, its windows tinted, engine humming low. Max gave a small nod and moved ahead, keying the car open with a soft beep.As soon as Jace stepped forward, a young lady rushed towards her, stopping him in his tracks.“Please! Sir, please wait.” She cried, her voice cracked like dry paper in the wind. She looked like she’d been running, or maybe wandering. He
[45] What have I done
The door creaked open as Tess stepped into the house, with the late afternoon light spilling in behind her, casting long, warm stripes across the wooden floor. It should have been a return to peace, but instead, her heart was tight with something she couldn’t name yet. She just couldn't wait to get her hands on those papers to confirm who the liar had been all this time.Ben was right behind her, putting down everything they purchased on the living room couch. To anyone else, they would’ve looked like a couple who had weathered a storm and survived it. His smile was relaxed, almost lazy, as he took in the living room like he belonged there like he had earned that place beside her.“Tess,” Alexa, called softly, dropping her hand and picking up a medicine bottle from the centre table, “Mom’s still resting, I'd have to wake her up and give this to her, she ought to have taken it an hour ago.""Yes, sure," Tess nodded distractedly, her eyes already locked on the papers placed neatly on t
[46] Slow-Death poison
Two days later, the sun began to set over the Skyview Apartments, casting a hazy orange glow across the city skyline. It should have been a peaceful evening, but Jace had other plans. Plan to complete one of the two tasks given to him by the system. It was the day before his departure, the flight out that would finally take him far away from the tangled wreckage of this city, away from the ghosts that still whispered through its alleys and abandoned promises and into a new world, of technology and power. Or rather a place where school works awaited him.Staring at the system's screen, one name lingered,"Briggs."A name that now crawled across Jace’s thoughts like rust. He had never killed a man, but perhaps he'd start now. Getting his hand dirty could be the only option he had to protect his future."Is everything set?" His mother's voice came from behind, caressing Jace's ears with a warm motherly care that he would certainly miss."Yes," he nodded with a smile,"My boxes are packed
[47] Annihilate the threat
The next morning, Jace stood by the window, dressed immaculately in a dark tailored coat that brushed his knees. His travel bag rested by the couch, while his mother paced from one part of the house to another looking for something that wasn't missing."Leaving by 6 am for a 10 am flight," Jace shrugged. He was glad that after all the chaos, betrayals, and near-death nights, he had earned the right to leave the city and get to the college like he always dreamed of.But one Task remained and that was to take care of the Chief just like he did to Briggs, and from a trustworthy source, he learned that the Chief would be waiting for him at the airport, and Jace couldn't wait to get down to business. He took a sip of lukewarm coffee his mother had made, savouring its bitter taste while waiting for her. But all of a sudden, the doorbell rang."Huh?" Jace turned, eyes narrowing. Max wasn’t due for another ten minutes, and he wasn't sure his mother had invited anyone to bade him goodbye at
[48] He'll have to come do it himself
Jace’s fingers closed tightly around the cold metal of the gun that Max handed over to him, its weight grounding him like a bolt of gravity. He could hear the beating of his own heart under the silence that followed after another gunshot that shattered the windows on the left side of the car. Max had already stopped the car, pulling up next to a bridge still undergoing construction. The workers fled at the sight of the car covered in bullet marks, running in all directions or hiding in a safer spot to watch the fight unfold. "System, reflexes," Jace muttered, holding the gun closely to his chest, "I need reflexes, take another ten coins, and upgrade it by 1%, let's see what I can do with it." [ You have purchased a new attribute: Sharp reflexes ] [ You have successfully upgraded your new attribute: +1% chance to dodge fist attacks and gunshots] [ All attributes are activated! ] [ Goodluck Jace. ] Once confirmed, Jace slid out of the car low, using the open door as a momentary
[49] We meet again
The airport bustled with noise and motion as the travelling bag wheels dragged across tiled floors. The airport announcements echoed in multiple languages, and security personnel scanned every face with routine suspicion. But Jace wasn’t focused on that because his senses were tuned to one frequency of danger. This same airport was the beginning of his predicament as well as his success, the same checkpoint where he had gotten arrested, the same pathway where he was dragged without mercy and where his mother had sat down crying. And to top it all up, history was about to repeat itself, but this time he is prepared for it.He had barely gotten any rest after the fight with the attackers, and he had taken off the coat because it still bore faint bloodstains and dirt. His knuckles ached from the last punches he threw, and his mind often drifted back to the task he failed to accomplish, even though the system was yet to announce it.He walked steadily through the terminal, every step caut
[50] Final Task
Jace's eyes locked with the Chief's, and for a moment, everything froze. The walls seemed to close in on them as the bitter past between them materialised like fog in the room. The man who had once held power, privilege, and respect now stood before him with his eyes raging in disgrace, his heart burnt by loss, and maddened by vengeance. "Surprised to see me?" the Chief sneered. “You ruined my life and took everything. I don't know how you did it, how you became the person you are within twenty-four hours. But one thing is sure, I’ll return the favour.” Before Jace could react, the Chief snapped his fingers, and the two men who had brought Jace in moved swiftly. Unlike Briggs, the Chief wouldn't waste time on meaningless chatter, he went straight to the act. In a defensive stance, Jace took a few steps back, his instincts firing like lightning. And just then, the approval he had been waiting for flashed before his eyes. [ Final Task Activated — Warrior/Enforcer Path] [ Missi
