Chapter 61
Moise and Cathy agreed on the spot where they'd meet up. As Cathy drove there, she had a thousand thoughts in her head. All swirling and leading to even more. She couldn't stop wondering if she had offended Moise in any way. Why would he suddenly terminate the contract? It just didn't make sense.“What the hell is happening!” She yelled and slapped her palm on the steering wheel. Then she was reminded of what she had said during her family's recent meeting. Her threat to her family, that the Beckmans would cut all connections with them if they impeached Jack as head of the family, was as clear as day, replayed in her head. She slapped her palm on the steering wheel again. Her chest tightened with fear. “This is totally horrible.” They must not hear of this. The contract is the only reason they stopped the protests. If they knew about the termination now, they'd force her father to step down. The contract was the only reason they shut up and left her father as the family head. Heck,

Cathy leaned forward. “You're going to be the heir, no decision can be made without you, isn't it? Maybe you approved it absentmindedly?”Moise ran his fingers through his hair. He shook his head. “I didn't. Amber has the authority to make decisions without needing my approval.”Cathy's heart squeezed. She knew that what happened at that meeting had only further ruined her reputation in Amber's eyes. Cathy gripped Moise's free hand across the table. “You have to help me out, Moise. Please, this contract is very important to me, you know that. You remember what I said at my family's last gathering? They wanted to impeach my father and me, our connection with your family was what kept them at bay, please, they mustn't get a whiff of this. I have to make things before they suspect anything.” Her hold on his hand tightened. “I need your help, Moise.” Moise curled his fingers around her hand. “I'll do something about it," he assured her. "When did you say you got the termination notice a

Amber paused to take a deep breath. She lowered herself back into her seat. She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. She needed to get a hold of her temper.Moise just stared, shocked that Amber had actually raised her voice at him. He was about to brutally extinguish whatever hope she and everyone had about some nonexistent heir returning when Amber opened her eyes and spoke.“The reason why the contract was terminated has nothing to do with Neal like your fickle-minded self thinks,” Amber said more calmly. "It's purely business. And you know me, I don't bring sentiment into business.”Moise scoffed at that. “Of course.”Amber pretended not to have heard any of that. If she allowed him to get on her temper one more time, she'd do or say something that she herself wouldn't like, and worse, something that might upset Neal. She continued, “As you well know, the Waterfall Corporation and all the other Beckman companies only work with groups that will benefit us more, organ

“How was the class?" Vanessa asked as she stopped beside Neal's desk and waited for him to pack his books.“Immersive, as usual,” Neal answered. He slung his bag over his shoulder. “How was it for you?" He asked as he began to walk to the door. Vanessa immediately sidled up next to him.Vanessa's shoulders went up in a shrug. “Not bad, I guess. I like that everything was practical. You can actually see how the theories would work in real life and complex business situations or crises.”"And that's exactly what we need. A bunch of theories without any idea of how they'll help society is a bunch of rubbish.” Just as Neal finished speaking, his phone rang out in his pocket. He retrieved his phone from his pocket and frowned at the unknown number. Though Neal knew that with how the Nelsons' last meeting had gone, there was a very slim chance that Cathy would have the guts to call him again, he still hoped that it wasn't her. He swiped right to answer the call.“Good morning, sir. My name

Neal arrived home to find Amber waiting for him. The moment he stepped into the living room, Amber rose to her feet. “Welcome." Neal nodded. “Thank you." “Dinner has just been served," Amber gestured toward the dining area. “Let's talk while we eat.”Neal nodded. He stopped by the restroom and washed his hands. Then he joined Amber in the dining area.Neal's brows rose in surprise. “This is a feast," he commented at the array of luxurious dishes arranged on the dining table as he took his seat.Amber smiled. “You missed dinner last night. The chef is just trying to feed you for then and now.”Neal chuckled. “Well, he's done a good job. If I finish all of these, I'll be fed for the next three days.”Amber laughed. Then she stood up to dish the meals for both of them, occasionally stopping at every bowl to ask Neal if he wanted it.A minute later, their plates were both filled and they began to eat. After a few spoons of the meal, Amber began to talk. “So about Moise…”Neal nodded.

Just as she turned the doorknob, her stomach made a weird sound reminding her that she hadn't put anything in it since the light breakfast she had taken in the morning. She was tired and starved. She stepped into the house and was disappointed that she wasn't met by the sweet aroma of the delicious meal that would have been waiting for her if only-Her thoughts broke off. If only Neal had been there. At the thought of him, there was an influx of memories of all the nights she had arrived from work, late and tired like this one. On such nights, Neal would always be awake, waiting for her. The moment she stepped into the house, he'd take her bag, usher her in to take a bath after which he'd serve her a delicious meal that would immediately allay her worries. While she ate, he'd ask how her day went and tell her how he hoped that work hadn't been so stressful for her and how he'd be willing to help in any way he could. Somehow, she missed it all. His presence. His care. His meals. And th

As Cathy walked out of the house, she continued to dial Moise's line. She opened her car door, placed her bag in the passenger seat, and climbed in.Once she'd closed the car's door, she looked down at her phone's screen and let out a sigh just as the automated machine voice announced that the number was unavailable. She rested her head on the seat’s headrest. She closed her eyes and mouthed, “Why isn't he picking up?”When she woke up that morning, Moise had been the first person she texted, the first person she called. Which was actually very early in the morning. Unable to get a proper night’s sleep because her mind was occupied, she had woken up way earlier than she normally did She then took her time with her bath, took longer than normal to get dressed with the shaky hope that by the time she was done getting ready for work, he'd have gotten enough time to receive the messages and missed calls and would have reciprocated. But there had been absolutely nothing from him.She sat

Cathy was desperate. Her presence would only cloud his mind with her desperation and the pressure she'd exert on him to get the contract sorted and fulfill his promise. He didn't even have the means to do that nor does he have any idea how to.To be able to fulfill his promise, he needed Amber's support and acceptance as the heir. To get that, he needed to get Neal out of the way. And to get Neal out of his way without anyone suspecting him, he needed a clear head to be able to think. Stepping away from Cathy's family drama would make him able to think beyond the things she wanted from him. She wanted the contract badly and she also expected him to pay the multiple $100 000 that her brother had stolen. He scoffed. Money that he didn’t even know anything about before it was announced at their meeting. He hadn't even spent a dime from the money. Why should he be pressured into paying it back? How is he even going to handle it? How will he think straight if someone is always there to r

Just then, Jack stepped into the living room. Disregarding his wife's presence, he directed his grimace at Cathy. “What did you just say?" Cathy sat up straighter. She hadn't meant for her dad to find out yet. At least, not in that manner. She swallowed and answered his question. “We received a contract termination email from the Beckman family.”Frank walked out too, his brows furrowed. “What do you mean by that? Why?”Cathy ignored him. Everyone is devastated. How could they lose a contract with the Waterfall Corporation when they just got it? The whole company was working towards impressing Waterfall Corporation, why did they suddenly pull out? Everything had seemed to be going just fine.“How come?” Cathy's mother found her voice. “Did you have a fight with Moise?" She asked.Cathy shook her head. "No.” Then, she shrugged, “At least, I don't think so. We were good as at the time when we departed yesterday. Besides, he's not the one who terminated the contract. It's Amber. After

Neal stood before the floor-length mirror in his room. He placed a blue shirt on a hanger before his chest, then switched it with another blue shirt with a darker shade. He repeated this action a number of times. Eventually, he opted for the shirt with the darker shade. He finished getting dressed. Then he finished the breakfast that he'd asked the butler to bring to his room. When he was done, he grabbed his phone and bag and left for school. He hailed a taxi. He entered and met the driver's gaze through the rearview mirror as he silently asked for Neal's location.“Craig holdings," Neal said and the man nodded.Neal still had about an hour to spare before his classes started for the day. So he decided that he'd just drop by Craig holdings and give Yvonne Stone her ID card before he made his way to school. Though lectures would begin late that day, there was a long list of text material that he had to go through for different courses. The chance that he'd leave school late was high
