“Kneel, you—”
Blood trickled from the corner of Neal’s mouth, but he didn’t dare fight back against the man standing in front of him.
Frank sneered and stepped closer, his tone vicious. “Tell me, why is there dirt on my shoes?”
Neal lowered his head. He had polished the shoes until they gleamed, but it was clear Frank had no intention of letting him off the hook. Frank had served in the military and was physically strong. Neal, on the other hand, was just a boy raised in an orphanage, no match for him.
Frank grabbed Neal by the hair and growled, “Answer me! You think playing dumb is gonna get you out of this?”
Neal looked him in the eyes and said, “I spent two hours cleaning your shoes. I didn’t see a single speck of dust on them…”
“Oh? So you’re saying I imagined it?”
Neal felt bitter sorrow inside, but he couldn’t resist. All he could do was bow his head and say, “I’m sorry, Frank. I’ll clean them again.”
“Clean? Don’t be stupid. Crawl over and lick them clean. If you do that, maybe I’ll let you off today.”
Neal’s whole body trembled. Through clenched teeth, he growled, “Frank, that’s enough! No matter what, I’m still your sister’s husband. You should at least call me brother-in-law…”
“Brother-in-law, my ass!”
“If it weren’t for you, my sister would’ve married the man she truly loved! You’re nothing but a useless male nurse, a leech who took advantage of the situation! If it weren’t for my soft-hearted mother, we would’ve kicked you out a long time ago!”
Neal felt a deep sorrow in his heart.
Soft-hearted?
If Neal hadn’t taken on the job of caring for her and looked after her with such dedication, she wouldn’t have recovered completely.
After Cathy regained consciousness, she was emotionally devastated. To help her heal, the Nelson family patriarch arranged a marriage between her and Neal, hoping he would continue to care for her wholeheartedly.
In fact, the old patriarch even paid Neal $3,000 per month as compensation for looking after Cathy.
Who could’ve expected that after the old man passed away, everyone would treat Neal like the lowest servant in the house?
Frank stomped on Neal’s face, his voice cold and threatening:
He stood up and muttered coldly, “By the way, you did a good job cleaning my shoes. But I just felt like hitting you today. As long as you stay in the Nelson house, I’ll beat you every single day!”
Frank laughed maniacally and walked away.
Neal appeared calm, but inside he was in agony.
Should he leave?
It was time for him to repay her.
Neal forced himself to his feet and returned to his “room.”
He lay down and quickly fell asleep.
But in a half-dream, half-awake state, Neal suddenly felt a pair of cold hands caressing his body.
“Cathy? You—”
Just as Neal was about to speak, Cathy threw herself on him and kissed him, silencing his words.
Neal’s eyes widened. His marriage to Cathy had always been in name only. They had never shared a bed. Though he cooked, cleaned, and brewed her coffee every day, he was treated more like a servant than a husband.
But now… what was Cathy doing?
He could clearly tell Cathy was drunk. Her hands were roaming clumsily across his body, and Neal began to lose control too.
Both of them lost all reason.
Neal thought maybe, just maybe, all his years of dedication had finally touched Cathy’s heart.
An hour later, Cathy lay quietly in Neal’s arms. He gazed at her peaceful face and smiled with satisfaction.
Just a few hours ago, he had considered leaving the Nelson family to escape Frank, who was a violent maniac. Neal feared that if he stayed, Frank would eventually beat him to death.
But now… if Cathy truly loved him… he was willing to stay.
Smiling, Neal gently moved to get up and pour Cathy a glass of water.
But the moment he shifted, Cathy mumbled sleepily,
Hearing that name, Neal’s smile froze.
His whole body stiffened as though frozen. He turned to look at Cathy, hoping he had misheard.
“Moise… I… I missed you so much…”
Neal’s face fell. He stood there silently, then gave a bitter, self-mocking laugh.
“Of course… how could a woman like her ever truly love a caretaker like me? I was just a substitute for that man…”
Neal picked up his clothes and quietly walked out of the room.
He collapsed onto the couch in the living room, utterly dejected, and drifted into a fitful sleep.

It must be ingrained in her memory no matter what state she was in.He looked down to find that she was looking up at him with a deranged smile. He drew back and managed a smile. He held up the phone in her face, “Unlock your phone." She suddenly pouted and vigorously shook her head like a kid who was about to throw a tantrum.Neal took a deep breath. “Please." She

Neal was quite humored when he found that the sharp shriek he thought he heard was in fact a giggle. He stood behind the shadows as he watched the girl wiggle in the arms of one of the men. In between her hysterical giggles, she slurred in a tiny voice, “Let me go..." drawing each word so long you might almost lose track of its meaning. She was able to get out of the grasp of one of the five men who surrounded her. She let out a loud burp, she palmed her mouth, eyes wide and then, she giggled. She staggered back only for one of the men to grope her again. The lady hit the man's chest as though her limbs had turned to jelly. “Let go. Leave me alone...” Instead of doing as she'd asked, the man grinned, “Laugh some more for me, pretty lady." The mere sight of his discolored teeth disgusted Neal. The lady giggled. Then they all burst into a fit of laughter. “Let me go…" the lady slurred again. The men laughed. “Why let you go, pretty girl? Come on, come with us.”She giggled, but shoo

Neal looked up. “What's up? You found another material?”She shook her head. “I want to invite you to my house. You know we could catch up more comfortably there and study longer without all the gossip going around.” Then she nervously added with a shrug, "I'm not trying to impose or anything. You can decline if it's inconvenient or a bad time.”Neal shook his head. “You're not imposing. It's no big deal. When?”She hesitated. It was almost like she was dumping it all on him. She should have asked before. “How about today?”She was gladdened when Neal shrugged and said, “Sure.” Then he returned his focus to studying.Vanessa beamed. A few minutes later, they headed out to attend their remaining classes for the day. After the last class, they both made their way to the library. In the library, while Vanessa packed her hair into a ponytail, preparing to get to work, Neal printed out the list of textbooks and materials they were to look out for. He handed one copy to Vanessa. “You cou

“Peter still isn't in school today?” One of the students walked to another as he dumped his books in an open locker. The second student shook his head, his gaze on his phone as he scrolled in. “I've been checking his social media pages but there's been nothing. It's like he disappeared off the face of the earth.”“Maybe he's depressed,” Someone chipped in from another group.“What if he's planning to sue Neal?” The other whispered.“Why will he?” Another student interjected. “Peter was the one who made the rule, not Neal. Neal was simply sticking to their agreement.”From another group, someone mused, “I heard his father grounded him.”The group guffawed. “What is he? Ten?”“His father didn't ground him,” another student poked his head in. "But I'm sure his father would have been very mad. That video went viral on the internet. Everyone saw it.”Vanessa overheard some of these whispers as she walked through the hallway with Neal by her side.“All they do is talk and assume and gossip

Cathy placed her bag on the table and dropped into her seat with a sigh.It was the next morning after the family gathering that almost went haywire but thanks to Moise, she was able to put it under control.Since the meeting, she had worried nonstop and that pissed her. So instead of worrying, she tried to work but she couldn't concentrate. She tried to sleep but instead of that, she spent all night tossing in bed, thinking of how to make everything right. Her lower lip jutted out after she unlocked her phone and there were neither missed calls nor messages. She had been expecting a call from Moise but had gotten none. She thought. But i

The ride back home was quiet. Amber focused on the road before her as she handled the steering wheel. Neal, seated in the passenger seat beside Amber, looked out the window. He took in the passing people, buildings, and cars as he relived the last few minutes, as he breathed in relief that he was no longer bound by any secret contract again.Amber, on the other hand, was pissed. She was pissed at all of those jerks called the Nelson family for treating Neal the way they did. She was enraged by the audacity of their insulting the Beckman heir. How dare they? If she hadn't suspected that Neal would not like it, she would have had them arrested and locked up. Besides, Neal didn't want to reveal his identity yet.But she was also pissed at Neal. How could he allow all of that? Why didn't he get back at them after he found out his real identity? He had the means, he could lock them all up for decades if he wanted. Why did he even attend that damn meeting? Her hands on the steering wheel ti
