“Kneel, you—”
Blood trickled from the corner of Neal’s mouth, but he didn’t dare fight back against the man standing in front of him.
Frank sneered and stepped closer, his tone vicious. “Tell me, why is there dirt on my shoes?”
Neal lowered his head. He had polished the shoes until they gleamed, but it was clear Frank had no intention of letting him off the hook. Frank had served in the military and was physically strong. Neal, on the other hand, was just a boy raised in an orphanage, no match for him.
Frank grabbed Neal by the hair and growled, “Answer me! You think playing dumb is gonna get you out of this?”
Neal looked him in the eyes and said, “I spent two hours cleaning your shoes. I didn’t see a single speck of dust on them…”
“Oh? So you’re saying I imagined it?”
Neal felt bitter sorrow inside, but he couldn’t resist. All he could do was bow his head and say, “I’m sorry, Frank. I’ll clean them again.”
“Clean? Don’t be stupid. Crawl over and lick them clean. If you do that, maybe I’ll let you off today.”
Neal’s whole body trembled. Through clenched teeth, he growled, “Frank, that’s enough! No matter what, I’m still your sister’s husband. You should at least call me brother-in-law…”
“Brother-in-law, my ass!”
“If it weren’t for you, my sister would’ve married the man she truly loved! You’re nothing but a useless male nurse, a leech who took advantage of the situation! If it weren’t for my soft-hearted mother, we would’ve kicked you out a long time ago!”
Neal felt a deep sorrow in his heart.
Soft-hearted?
If Neal hadn’t taken on the job of caring for her and looked after her with such dedication, she wouldn’t have recovered completely.
After Cathy regained consciousness, she was emotionally devastated. To help her heal, the Nelson family patriarch arranged a marriage between her and Neal, hoping he would continue to care for her wholeheartedly.
In fact, the old patriarch even paid Neal $3,000 per month as compensation for looking after Cathy.
Who could’ve expected that after the old man passed away, everyone would treat Neal like the lowest servant in the house?
Frank stomped on Neal’s face, his voice cold and threatening:
He stood up and muttered coldly, “By the way, you did a good job cleaning my shoes. But I just felt like hitting you today. As long as you stay in the Nelson house, I’ll beat you every single day!”
Frank laughed maniacally and walked away.
Neal appeared calm, but inside he was in agony.
Should he leave?
It was time for him to repay her.
Neal forced himself to his feet and returned to his “room.”
He lay down and quickly fell asleep.
But in a half-dream, half-awake state, Neal suddenly felt a pair of cold hands caressing his body.
“Cathy? You—”
Just as Neal was about to speak, Cathy threw herself on him and kissed him, silencing his words.
Neal’s eyes widened. His marriage to Cathy had always been in name only. They had never shared a bed. Though he cooked, cleaned, and brewed her coffee every day, he was treated more like a servant than a husband.
But now… what was Cathy doing?
He could clearly tell Cathy was drunk. Her hands were roaming clumsily across his body, and Neal began to lose control too.
Both of them lost all reason.
Neal thought maybe, just maybe, all his years of dedication had finally touched Cathy’s heart.
An hour later, Cathy lay quietly in Neal’s arms. He gazed at her peaceful face and smiled with satisfaction.
Just a few hours ago, he had considered leaving the Nelson family to escape Frank, who was a violent maniac. Neal feared that if he stayed, Frank would eventually beat him to death.
But now… if Cathy truly loved him… he was willing to stay.
Smiling, Neal gently moved to get up and pour Cathy a glass of water.
But the moment he shifted, Cathy mumbled sleepily,
Hearing that name, Neal’s smile froze.
His whole body stiffened as though frozen. He turned to look at Cathy, hoping he had misheard.
“Moise… I… I missed you so much…”
Neal’s face fell. He stood there silently, then gave a bitter, self-mocking laugh.
“Of course… how could a woman like her ever truly love a caretaker like me? I was just a substitute for that man…”
Neal picked up his clothes and quietly walked out of the room.
He collapsed onto the couch in the living room, utterly dejected, and drifted into a fitful sleep.

What's the next step?” One of the board members asked and they all turned to Yvonne.Yvonne placed her phone face down. “First, I'll have to set up a meeting with them so we can discuss the necessary terms.”They all nodded. “Alright. Do that and get back to us.”Yvonne nodded with a smile. "I will. Thank you." "We're done here then," one of them said. The others responded in the affirmative. They exchanged pleasantries and handshakes and the meeting came to an end.Yvonne picked up her phone and exited the conference room. The next day, Amber and Neal left for Comix Verts together.“Just take the straight lane, then you turn to your left,” Neal said as he directed Amber.“Alright," Amber said. “The new name is really nice, Neal. It's catchy and it sparks a lot of interest.”Neal smiled. “That was the goal." A while later, Amber parked before the company's building. She slowly nodded as she glanced at the buildings. “Not bad,” she muttered. "For a bankrupt company, it looks like it has some pretty sturdy assets."Neal nodded. “That's what I thought too. If only Jude had been less greedy, the business would still be in its glorious days,” he said as he got out of the car.“Yes,” Amber agreed. “Though this building will need some renovations.”“Yes, I already got some assets delivered. I'll check them out before we leave. The renovations will come later.”Amber nodded, thinking how smart it was for Neal to have thought it all out. He really didn't need her help. Neal and Amber walked into the company. T

When Vanessa saw Neal the next day, she pondered whether or not to ask Neal where he'd rushed to the previous day. Eventually, she decided against it. She now understood that Neal preferred to keep his affairs private. As a friend, she should leave him if he doesn't want to share some information. There was no need to make it hard for him by always asking questions. While they had lunch, Vanessa told Neal about the updated recipe that her chef had just made. “Oh my,” she tilted her head back, “It was heavenly. You needed to have tasted it.”Neal sent a playful glare her way. “What is this, Vanessa? Are you here to taunt me?”Vanessa shrugged as she fought a giggle. “It's left to you, my friend.”Neal hummed as he chewed the food in his mouth. He swallowed. "I see. With our visual descriptions, your plan is to make my mouth water for a meal I might never have, yes?”Vanessa couldn't hold back her laugh this time. She raised her two hands above her head. “That was never my intention,”

Neal eventually shrugged off the worrying thoughts that nagged him after the phone call with Yvonne. He focused on the company's profile in front of him.A while later, he heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” he answered with his attention still on the document. The manager stepped in, his tablet in his hand. He quietly closed the door behind him.“Well done, sir,” he bowed. I just thought I would come to check if you need anything.”Neal glanced at the intercom on his right on the desk. He returned his gaze to the manager. “If I need you I'll call you.”“Okay sir,” the manager said. The manager was about to pull the door open when Neal said, “Five people were fired, right?”The manager turned back and quickly nodded, “Yes, sir.”Neal nodded. “Send out a vacancy notice so that we can recruit new employees to fill the vacant positions. And you need to do so fast because when work begins, whoever is staying there would need to go back to their posts and get their own job done.”“Alri

Instead, she made a beeline for the manager's office. The manager suppressed a groan when he looked up to see who had barged into his office, without even a knock. The woman's presence had always spelled trouble, but he had no choice but to give her due respect. He forced a smile as he sat up. “Mrs Ben, good day, ma'am.”Lisa offered the manager a cold smile. “Good day to you too,” she placed her bag on the table and she took a seat.
