1. The night that changed his life
Someone was following him. By the third turn, Travis knew it wasn't a coincidence. The man in the black hoodie followed silently. Travis quickened his pace. Why was someone following him? He had nothing to offer. The idea of someone stalking him made his skin crawl. He swiftly entered a nearby cafe and sat down. He watched through the window. Different people walked past the window but he kept his eyes on the stalker. To his surprise, the stalker walked past the window and went on his way. Travis frowned. He had been very sure that the person was following him. Was he just overthinking it? He left the cafe as the server approached him. Few pedestrians roamed the streets. Vehicle honks and engine noises echoed in the night. Streetlights, headlights and building lights illuminated the city as it went on with its night activities. No sign of the stalker. Travis clenched his jaw and continued his journey home. This was just a misunderstanding. He arrived in the rural part of Cr
2. Eva and Keegan
The scent of medicine filled his nostrils as Travis's eyes fluttered open. His sight cleared up gradually and the most exotic hospital ward he had ever been in greeted him. "He's awake," said a man in a lab coat, arranging some equipment on the nearby table. Everything in the ward was made of great quality. This had to be one of the wealthiest private hospitals in the city. Another person sat in a corner of the ward. She wore a grey tank top and sweatpants. Her black hair was tied to form a double ponytail. "Where am I?" muttered Travis. Then, the events of the previous night returned to his mind. "Where's my father?" The doctor, who was about to check up on him, glanced at the lady nervously, then back at him. "I need to check up on you..." Travis sat up. His head spun. He hissed and placed his hand on his head. "Don't hurt yourself." The lady chided. Travis focused his blurry sight on her. "My father...is he really..." She cleared her throat and looked away. Travis's sh
3. True identity revealed
Travis stared at the two people in front of him, wondering if they had gone insane. "Pardon?" Keegan pinched the bridge of his nose. "We were supposed to do this subtly, Eva. You don't just drop this kind of news like a bombshell." Eva didn't look remorseful. "He needs to know the truth." "Truth? What are you talking about?" Travis asked. Realizing Eva's hand was still in his, he withdrew it. Keegan shifted his gaze to Travis. He sighed and took out his phone. He said as he typed on the screen. "This is the DNA test result we carried out with your sample." He handed him the phone. With a frown, Travis's eyes scanned the screen. His eyes widened. The results stated that their DNA samples matched. How could he be a child of the Novaks? The thought of it never even crossed his mind. He always thought his parents were ordinary citizens. "We took some of your samples discreetly and conducted a test. It's proven. You are our son." She cupped his cheeks. "Wait, hold up." Travis rem
4. Adam's body
Khloe turned out to be the lady who had been with him earlier. She entered the ward a few minutes after Eva and Keegan left. She sat and fixed her gaze on Travis as if he were some interesting specimen. "So, now you know everything, huh?" She asked. "Yeah, so?" he said. She snorted. "Well, welcome to the family, brother. Don't expect me to respect you just because you are older than." Travis frowned. "You are their daughter? Didn't Eva say she had a womb problem?" "I was adopted." "Oh." He pursed his lips. "The Novaks adopt?" "Not really. Long story." Travis rolled his eyes. "Everyone I've met in this family seems to have some story." "Like I said before, welcome to the family. Being a powerful family comes with its benefits and drawbacks." Travis huffed. "I'd rather be anywhere but in the god-damned family." She raised a brow. "Sharp tongue. Did the Novaks killed your girlfriend or what?" Travis didn't reply. "Well, suck it up. You are the first child of the head of
5. One million
The pain of losing Adam didn't fade the next day. With a heavy heart, Travis had his usual morning routine, only now he was in Keegan's house. Like Eva had said, everything he needed was in his room, even things he didn't think he'd need. Afterwards, he sat on his bed and went through his old brand phone, which had a broken screen. There wasn't much to check. Just a few messages in his class group chat. The chat hadn't dissolved despite the class having graduated from high school. He closed the group, uninterested. The next chat on his list was his cousin, who asked him when he was coming back. Adam's family. How could he forget about them? They probably weren't aware of Adam's death. Travis closed her chat, not bothering to inform her about her uncle's death. They won't care. If anything, it was good news for them. His best friend hadn't messaged him yet. Travis dropped his phone and sighed. Now what? On a normal day, he'd be on his way to work. He wondered if he'd ever n
6. Cassius
Travis stared, dumbstruck. He remembered Eva saying she would send him pocket money. Was this what she called pocket money? This amount of money could change an average person's life. "Travis?" Nate's voice snapped him out of his daze. He turned off his phone screen quickly. Nate stood beside him, worry etched on his face. Travis moved aside for him. "Want a sip?" He held out the beer can to him, hiding the shock he felt seconds ago from the credit alert. Nate stared at the can skeptically before accepting it and sitting beside him. "Are you alright?" asked Nate. Travis nodded. "Yeah. I'm good." Nate paused before saying. "You can tell me if anything is bugging you, right?" Travis hesitated. Nate was his best friend. He could trust him with anything. But this kind of information was too classified to share with anyone yet. And Keegan was clear not to tell anyone yet. Nate sighed and punched his shoulder playfully. "It's okay, man. Whenever you are ready, I'm here to listen.
7. Bank Cards
Travis and Keegan went inside. Once they stepped into the living room, Keegan said. "Be careful around my siblings, especially Cassius. He’s always up to no good.” Travis pursed his lips. He didn't only have to watch for other enemies, he also had to watch out for his own family. Just great. Keegan's amber eyes studied Travis. Travis shifted his feet. "So, I'll be going–" "Perhaps, I was too harsh yesterday in the infirmary." Keegan interrupted. "Sorry." His jaw tightened, as if it hurt his throat to admit this. Travis looked away, not sure how to react. Hearing Keegan apologize felt so weird. "Losing Adam must have been hard for you. I should have been more considerate. Still, I spoke nothing but the truth. You are one of us now. Nothing can change that." And there was the attitude again. Travis rolled his eyes. He inserted his hand into his pockets. "So, I've been thinking. How would you like to run a company?" Travis blinked. "Run a company?" He nodded. "We have lot of
8. The Shen Family
The next day found Travis at the private cemetery where Adam was being buried. The weather was peaceful, as if it knew someone was mourning. The sun sat high in the sky, warm but not scorching, as the clouds lazily drifted. The calm breeze flew through the field, rustling the grass. Silence was thick in the area. Travis, all by himself, knelt in front of Adam's grave where he had been buried. At Keegan's order, the grave was made of white marble with Adam's name carved on it. Flowers surrounded the grave beautifully. Travis knelt in silence for what felt like thirty minutes, reminiscing the memories he had with Adam. Adam had been the only father figure he had in life. Now he was gone. Just like that. Travis took a deep breath and bowed his head. A teardrop streaked down his cheek from both eyes. "I'll avenge you, father," muttered Travis. Keegan said the men who attacked him were in his custody. His jaw clenched. They'd pay for this, and whoever sent would pay tenfold. After
9. Shopping
Travis couldn't believe what he saw when they arrived. What used to be a little bungalow, his dear home, was now a pile of rubble and ash. Travis stood dumbfounded. Who had the audacity to burn down his home? "Oh my..." Eva muttered, staring at the mess. Travis clenched his fist. More than ever, the urge for vengeance in him increased. First they took Adam, now they've burnt down his home? "We'll find out who's responsible for this. They'll regret this," promised Eva. With a heavy heart, Travis walked around the rubble, checking to see if he could salvage anything. All his personal things and Adam's things were in this house, now burnt. He sighed after searching for a while. Everything was destroyed. "Let's go." They left the area. As he rode out of the neighborhood, he wondered if he'd ever visit here again. Travis's mood didn't improve during the journey back to the mansion. It was high time he met those men again. But he got bad news when they arrived home and met Keegan.
10. Trouble at Alphamart
Travis's eyes widened as he took in the mall's interior. It was massive, filled with numerous stores, selling various goods. Air conditioners blasted cool air everywhere. He watched people going in and out of stores with their goods. One look at them and you could tell they were wealthy. Some even had security personnel following them. Khloe walked him around, showing him the different stores. There were so many that Travis lost count of how many they walked past. The arcade caught his interest though. It's been a while since he had fun in an arcade. And he could use some ice cream from one ice cream shop. They walked past a store which looked new as if it had just been built recently. The name of the store was displayed just above the door, ‘SandysGadget.’ Travis peered into the store. It was new, all right. Travis didn't know much about phones or gadgets, but any human with well-functioning brain cells could tell that the gadgets on display were expensive and of top brands. Travi
