Travis stared at the two people in front of him, wondering if they had gone insane.
"Pardon?" Keegan pinched the bridge of his nose. "We were supposed to do this subtly, Eva. You don't just drop this kind of news like a bombshell." Eva didn't look remorseful. "He needs to know the truth." "Truth? What are you talking about?" Travis asked. Realizing Eva's hand was still in his, he withdrew it. Keegan shifted his gaze to Travis. He sighed and took out his phone. He said as he typed. "This is the DNA test result we carried out with your sample." He handed him the phone. With a frown, Travis's eyes scanned the screen. His eyes widened. The results stated that their DNA samples matched. How could he be a child of the Novaks? The thought of it never even crossed his mind. "We took some of your samples discreetly and conducted a test. It's proven. You are our son." She cupped his cheeks. "Wait, hold up." Travis removed her hands from his cheeks subtly. "I don't understand all of this. Adam found me by the riverside. How can I be your child?" Keegan and Eva stared at each other, their faces a mask of concern and uncertainty. Eva spoke. "It's a long story. We actually thought you were dead." Travis blinked. For a scary moment, he started noticing some resemblance between him and Eva in looks. Before she could speak again, Keegan said. "There was a lot going on during your due month for delivery. Heir fighting and all. Then the biggest problem came upon us. You were born that day, unfortunately. The day we fought with the other big families." "The Big Clash? I know that," Travis said. Adam didn't really talk much about his birth but he figured it out himself. He assumed his parents lost their life in all the havoc and chaos during that day, and somehow, he ended up at the riverside in the forest where Adam found him. "Do you also know you were one, if not the most important primary target of that day?" "Primary target?" Travis frowned. Keegan continued. "I was the heir of the Novak, soon to be head. Enemies would try any means possible to make sure I didn't make it. That includes threatening you and possibly killing you." Travis's eyes widened. Eva went on. "During the Big Clash, I was attacked at home. I managed to escape into the forest with a damaged womb. I gave birth before any fatal harm was done to you but I fainted after it. When I woke up, you were gone." Eva's face was a mask of sadness as she recalled that day. "We have been living in despair since then. My womb is damaged, so you are the only child from my womb." Her face brightened. "I'm glad you are alright and strong." All thanks to Adam. Travis thought with a heartache. "See? We didn't leave you. I'll never leave you alone." Eva took his hands, her face filled with love. Travis wasn't sure how to feel about her affection. He was used to receiving affection from Adam alone. Would he ever consider this woman his mother? "How did you find me?" He stuttered, taking his hands off hers. Eva, trying to hide the pain she felt, faced Keegan, who said, "Well... it's really strange. Someone gave us information about you. Like...like they knew who you were." Travis scowled. That was strange. "We investigated and found out they were correct. We also got word that the Baxter family found out. How? We are not sure." "Wait, those men were from the Baxter family?" Travis's eyes widened. Keegan nodded. "Luckily, we got the news on time and sent our men to save you." They didn't come on time. If they had, they could have saved Adam. "All of this must be very confusing. For now, let's just welcome you to the family." She cupped his cheeks. "I missed you so much. You have no idea what I went through when I lost you. But now... I'll make up for all the years we've lost. We could..." "Look," Travis said, taking her hands away from his cheeks gently. "I appreciate what you guys have done for me, but all of this...it's crazy." "The DNA result proves you are our son, including results from investigations." Keegan deadpanned, staring at Travis with a flat expression. "Yes, it does. But...still, the Novak..." His voice faltered. "Travis... I'm sorry. If I had known you were alive, I'd have turned the earth upside down to find you. Forgive me, please. I..." Her voice shook as her eyes watered. "Enough, Eva." Keegan chided her. "I'm guessing he has a personal vendetta with the Novak family like every other imbecile that blames us for the Big Clash." Travis's blood boiled. "Don't call them imbeciles. We have good reasons to hate your family. Your little rivalry clash caused lots of destruction to innocent lives, while you have people protecting you." "You don't know what really happened that day, but that's a story for another day. And it's 'our' family, not 'your' family." "I can choose my path. I've lived all these years without you after all." "No matter what you think, no matter how much you despise us, it doesn't change the fact that you have the blood of the Novak family running through your veins." Travis's jaw clenched. Eva was on the verge of tears. She couldn't handle the pain of seeing her son hate her. "Anyway, you must stay with us if you want to live." Travis glared at him. "Is that a threat?" Keegan glared back. "The Baxters know your identity. Knowing the Baxters, they'd have spread the news around. The Lloyds probably already know, plus a couple of other enemies. Without our protection, you are not safe." Travis clenched his fist. "So...my life is in danger now, huh?" "Being a member of the Novak is never easy." "Why bring me here then? Why drag me to this damn forsaken life?" "Travis," Eva said, sounding on the verge of crying. "Please, that wasn't our intention. We love you." "Would you rather be in the custody of the Baxters? Trust me, that isn't something you'd like." Keegan deadpanned. Travis fumed. "Great. My life is fucked up now. Thanks, you two." "Travis," Eva croaked, her eyes watering. Keegan held Eva's shoulders. "We'll talk later. I'll send Khloe to show you your room." "Where's my father's body?" Travis asked. That was the only thing he cared about now. And yes, he deliberately said 'my father' instead of 'adoptive father'. If he was affected by this or not, Keegan didn't show as he answered. "Khloe will also take you to it. Also, hide your identity for your own safety. Don't tell anyone, not even your best friend." Travis frowned. "We'll leave for now. Think about what we discussed." Keegan turned to leave. Eva looked like she wanted to say something. "Come on, Eva." She stared at Travis sadly before following her husband. Travis collapsed on the bed with a grunt. He hated this family; now he was part of them? Well played, fate. Well played.Latest Chapter
9. Getting ready for a makeover
Travis couldn't believe what he saw when they arrived. What used to be a little bungalow, his dear home, was now a pile of rubble and ash.Travis stood dumbfounded. Who had the audacity to burn down his home? "Oh my..." Eva muttered, staring at the mess.Travis clenched his fist. More than ever, the urge for vengeance in him increased. First they took Adam, now they've burnt down his home? They'll pay dearly."We'll find out who's responsible for this. They'll regret this," promised Eva.With a heavy heart, Travis walked around the rubble, checking to see if he could salvage anything. All his personal things and Adam's things were in this house, now burnt. He sighed after searching for a while. Everything was destroyed. "Let's go."They left the area. As he rode out of the neighborhood, he wondered if he'd ever visit here again.Travis's mood didn't improve during the journey back to the mansion. It was high time he met those men again. But he got bad news when they arrived home and
8. The Shen Family
The next day found Travis at the private cemetery where Adam was being buried. The weather was peaceful, as if it knew someone was mourning. The sun sat high in the sky, warm but not scorching, as the clouds lazily drifted. The calm breeze flew through the field, rustling the grass.Silence was thick in the area. Travis, all by himself, knelt in front of Adam's grave where he had been buried. At Keegan's order, the grave was made of white marble with Adam's name carved on it. Flowers surrounded the grave beautifully.Travis knelt in silence for what felt like thirty minutes, reminiscing the memories he had with Adam. Adam had been the only father figure he had in life. Now he was gone. Just like that. Travis took a deep breath and bowed his head. A teardrop streaked down his cheek from both eyes. "I'll avenge you, father," muttered Travis. Keegan said the men who attacked him were in his custody. His jaw clenched. They'd pay for this, and whoever sent would pay tenfold. After a whi

Keegan exhaled deeply the moment he was sure Cassius was out of the house. "Be careful around my siblings, especially Cassius. He doesn't have good intentions for you." Travis pursed his lips. He didn't only have to watch for other enemies, he also had to watch out for his own family. Just great. Keegan's amber eyes studied Travis. Travis shifted. "So, I'll be going..." "Perhaps, I was too harsh yesterday in the ward." Keegan interrupted. "Sorry." His jaw tightened, as if it hurt his throat to admit this. Travis looked away, not sure how to react. Hearing Keegan apologize felt so weird. "Losing Adam must have been hard for you. I should have been more considerate. Still, I spoke nothing but the truth. You are one of us now. Nothing can change that." And there was the attitude again. Travis rolled his eyes. He inserted his hand into his pockets. "So, I've been thinking. How would you like to run a company?" Travis blinked. "Run a company?" He nodded. "We have lot of compani

Travis stared, dumbstruck. He remembered Eva saying she would send him pocket money. Was this what she called pocket money? This amount of money could change an average person's life."Travis?" Nate's voice snapped him out of his daze. He turned off his phone screen quickly. Nate stood beside him, worry etched on his face.Travis shifted a bit for him. "Want a sip?" He held out the beer can to him, hiding the shock he felt seconds ago from the credit alert.Nate stared at the can skeptically before collecting it and sitting beside him. "Are you alright?" asked Nate.Travis nodded. "Yeah. I'm good."Nate paused before saying. "You can tell me if anything is bugging you, right?"Travis hesitated. Nate was his best friend. He could trust him with anything. But this kind of information was too classified to share with anyone yet. And Keegan was clear not to tell anyone yet.Nate sighed and punched his shoulder playfully. "It's okay, man. Whenever you are ready, I'm here to listen. Just

The pain of losing Adam didn't fade the next day. With a heavy heart, Travis had his usual morning routine, only now he was in Keegan's house. Like Eva had said, everything he needed was in his room, even things he didn't think he'd need.Afterwards, he sat on his bed and went through his old brand phone, which had a broken screen. There wasn't much to check. Just a few messages in his class group chat. The chat hadn't dissolved despite the class having graduated from high school. He closed the group, uninterested. The next chat on his list was his cousin, who asked him when he was coming back. Adam's family. How could he forget about them? They probably weren't aware of Adam's death. Travis closed her chat, not bothering to inform her about her uncle's death. They won't care. If anything, it was good news for them. His best friend hadn't messaged him yet.Travis dropped his phone and sighed. Now what? On a normal day, he'd be on his way to work. He wondered if he'd ever need to co

Khloe turned out to be the lady who had been with him earlier. She entered the ward a few minutes after Eva and Keegan left. She sat and fixed her gaze on Travis as if he were some interesting specimen. "So, now you know everything, huh?" She asked. "Yeah, so?" he said. She snorted. "Well, welcome to the family, brother. Don't expect me to respect you just because you are older than me." Travis frowned. "You are their child? Didn't Eva say she had a womb problem?" "I was adopted." "Oh." He pursed his lips. "The Novaks adopt?" "Long story." Travis rolled his eyes. "Everyone I've met in this family seems to have some story." "Welcome to the family. Being a powerful family comes with its benefits and drawbacks." Travis huffed. "I'd rather be anywhere but in the god-damned family." She raised a brow. "Sharp tongue. Did the Novaks killed your girlfriend or what?" Travis didn't reply. "Well, suck it up. You are the first child of the head of the family. You'll always be in
