Chapter 1 :The Genesis Of It All
She loved him enough to kill him. Karl's vision blurred, breath heavy and uneven as he struggled to pull himself back on his feet. “Don't bother exhausting yourself Karl, you're only going to make it worse..” Melody's voice echoed in Karl's ears as his vision slowly adjusted on his wife, his chest tightening with every movement he made. Melody sat behind her dresser, brushing her hair with an eerie calmness. She glanced over her shoulder, eyes as cold as ever. This wasn't the woman he married, this wasn't the woman he called his wife. She…she looked different. “Melody…” He managed, his breath coming out harsh and painful. She paused mid brush, face twisting with anger. “Stop calling my name!” She snapped, tossing the hair comb at his face. Karl winced, his throat was getting dry and his chest burned with a heat that made him want to rip his clothes apart. What did Melody put in his food? Why does he feel like his insides are burning and twisting in all directions
Chapter 2: Yanked
Karl's eyes darted open in shock. Where is he? His blurry vision finally settled around his surroundings. White walls, the gentle sound of the air conditioner, the clicking of keyboards in the corner, and that noisy printer in the farthest end of the office… ‘Where am I?’ He thought. “Come on, Mr. Karl! What were you going to do? We can see a ring box in your hand!” Karl finally took a glance around to see that he wasn't alone. He was surrounded by faces, faces of people he knew all too well. Faces of people who worked for Melody.. He glanced down at his hands, he was indeed holding a ring box and a bouquet of flowers. It all felt too familiar, like he'd been here before. He was dying moments ago! Hell, he thought he was dead already but.. Karl glanced down at his hands, he was here. Real. In flesh. What the hell happened?! Melody folded her arms, her brows creased. “I hope he's not trying to propose to me!” She said out loud, loud enough for Karl to hear and draw his attent
Chapter 3 : Yanked 2
Karl pulled the ring box open just as the papers in Anna’s hands fell to the ground. The sound seemed to echo throughout the office as silence gripped the entire floor, a brittle scatter against the polished office floor that seemed far louder than it should have been. People who weren't paying attention before suddenly turned towards the scene at the center of the office as dozens of eyes followed the movement from the fallen documents to the open ring box in Karl's hands. Anna froze. Her breath caught painfully in her throat as she stared at the ring, then at Karl, then at the dozen of eyes now fixed on them in amusement. Her fingers trembled uselessly at her sides, unsure whether to reach for the papers or shield herself from the attention she hated with her entire being. “Wh…what?” She muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. “Marry me.” Karl repeated, his voice clear. The certainty in his eyes made Anna take a step back. What is he doing? Melody laughed as she steppe
Chapter 4: The Life He Left Behind.
Karl exhaled, he had expected his old man to end the call as soon as he heard his voice. For a moment he was silent, unable to speak. “What is this? A breathing competition?” Grandpa Maxwell scoffed. “Speak boy, I don't have all day.” Karl chuckled, he had no idea how much he missed his old man until now. “I’m doing fine thanks for asking.” Maxwell tuts, “If you were, you wouldn't be calling me, no?” Karl sighed. “I lost.” “Lost what?” “Our bet.” Karl admitted. “You were right.” Maxwell exhaled on the other end, he didn't need to rub it in. He could tell his boy had gone through some serious eye opening. “I'll have one of my drivers pick you up.” “No.” Karl said, “I'll meet you at the office.” Maxwell sighs, “Very well. I'm expecting you.” ~~~~ The drive from the company down to the Maxwell Empire was all he needed to get his shit together. Karl stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of Gordon Holdings, hands clasped behind his back as he looked out a
Chapter 5: What Is Wrong With Karl?
Karl returned to the house in the late afternoon, the sky already dulling toward evening. He went through the document over and over again. A quick G****e search and he realised Ruchi Emold was a ghost, nobody seems to know what she looks like and somehow he needs to get her to sign a contract with Gordon Empire. Karl's gaze flickered back up and his steps slowed. The driveway was occupied, which told him everything he needed to know before he even stepped inside. He'd forgotten about all the drama that happened at the office. Voices carried from the living room all the way out to the front porch. Rita’s voice cut through the space like it always did when she believed someone owed her something. A slow smile touched his lips, more amused than angry, and he stepped closer to the front porch before pulling a stop. Karl glanced down at the brown envelope and at the door. It's best they don't know what he's been up to. He tucks the envelope under his cardigan then removes his
Chapter 6: The Start
Morning came quietly. Karl stood alone in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, the kettle resting on the stove as steam curled softly into the air. The house was quiet almost like its occupants were rethinking the exchange from last night. Good. That was exactly where he wanted them to be, on their damned toes. His eyes scanned the house, it looked terribly unkempt. Dirty plates piled on the table, throw pillowcase on the floor, used tissues littered the living area. He looked away, his attention returning on his kettle of boiling water. Usually, he'd be up earlier to do the cooking and cleaning before everyone was out. Now, he felt none of that urgency. The kettle whistled softly. Karl turned it off, poured the water and set the mug down on the counter. “Oh my goodness!” Karl had barely lifted the mug to his lips when he heard Melody’s voice behind him. He lost his appetite all of a sudden. He set the mug down and exhaled. “Why isn't this place cleaned yet?” s
Chapter 7 : The Daredevil
His throat burned but he refused to stop, nor slow down. It's been ages since he'd pushed his body physically beyond what he was capable of withstanding. Rain poured relentlessly from the sky, soaking his clothes until they clung to his skin but he didn’t slow his pace. If anything, he pushed harder, feet pounding against the wet pavement as water splashed up his calves with every step. His muscles cried for mercy almost immediately but he ignored it. This use to be easier. A jog round a stadium was nothing to him before he met Melody, pushing his body to its limit was nothing but now, he hasn't even made it half way across the stadium and his body started to ache. Karl kept at his pace, his mind roaming off to one name: Ruchi Emold. Maxwell didn't offer anything beyond the contract she is to sign and a three weeks deadline. With a woman who turns down meetings like it was nothing. Yet, his chances of becoming part of Gordon Holdings again relied heavily on her decision
Chapter 8 : A Step Closer
Karl stepped out of his room, dressed for work, dressed in a dark shirt, trousers, a jacket he hadn’t worn in months. The house was suspiciously quiet. Sara and Jay weren't around as often as they always were. As much as he wanted to know why, he couldn't care less what their reasons were. He wanted them far away from him anyway, the less he sees them around, the better for him. The pain from his jog weighed heavily on his limbs but he ignored it. The sooner his body gets used to the pain, the better. When he stepped into the hallway, the air felt different. Clean even. That's odd, he usually does the cleaning which he had opted out of the past few days. Karl walked down the hallway, the air smelt of soap and air freshener. His eyes flickered to the floors; the floors gleamed faintly, as though someone had scrubbed it too thoroughly. Rita’s voice drifted from downstairs in angry hushed tones. Karl paused briefly at the top of the stairs, listening. “…I’m telling you the tr
Chapter 9: The Show.
Caden left Karl’s office , his eyes glancing over his shoulders every now and then. Melody was right, he's been acting strange these past few days. He had even told him off that night he was at their house. Karl never disagrees with him. By now, when his proposal to Anna had failed and his attempt to make Melody jealiys look stupid, he would have called him and asked what to do. He would be scrambling to figure out how to get Melody back and that worry is often lined on his face. But right now, Karl looked…very well. He was well dressed for the first time, well fractionally even. That's…very unlike his friend. And there was something unsettling about the way his friend looked at him. Like he knew something. Cadem shook his head and clenched his fist. That's not possible. He and Melody had been extremely careful about their plan. There's no way he could have known what they were planning. Or was there? Instead of his office, Caden made a turn down the hallway, he
Chapter 10: Checkmate
Karl did not move. The door remained open behind him, but he stood there with a look in his eyes that neither of them could read. His hand rested loosely against the doorframe, almost in amusement. “Oh my goodness..” Melody gasped, scrambling on her feet, her movements frantic as she tugged at her panties and then her skirt, hands shaking. Caden swore under his breath. He stepped back, fumbling with his trouser and then his belt. Papers slid off the desk as he moved, landing on the floor in a mess neither of them noticed. Karl chuckled, “I didn't mean to interrupt you. I didn't realise you two were so busy with work..” Silence, neither of them could speak. They could only stare at him in disbelief. Karl's eyes moved from one person to another, neither of them had the right words to say. His smile turned dark. “You got so carried away that you forgot to lock the door.” He mused. That was how little regard they had for him. His office was right next door and that didn't stop
