Karl pulled the ring box open just as the papers in Anna’s hands fell to the ground.
The sound seemed to echo throughout the office as silence gripped the entire floor, a brittle scatter against the polished office floor that seemed far louder than it should have been. People who weren't paying attention before suddenly turned towards the scene at the center of the office as dozens of eyes followed the movement from the fallen documents to the open ring box in Karl's hands. Anna froze. Her breath caught painfully in her throat as she stared at the ring, then at Karl, then at the dozen of eyes now fixed on them in amusement. Her fingers trembled uselessly at her sides, unsure whether to reach for the papers or shield herself from the attention she hated with her entire being. “Wh…what?” She muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. “Marry me.” Karl repeated, his voice clear. The certainty in his eyes made Anna take a step back. What is he doing? Melody laughed as she stepped forward, heels clicking against the floor, her eyes narrowing as she took in the scene before her. “Woah! You're willing to stoop this low?” She said, her voice ringing throughout the office. “You’ve completely lost your mind! Karl, look at her. She’s my assistant.” Karl remained on his knees, not sparing melody as much as a glance. His grip on the ring box remained firm, waiting for an answer from Anna. He would rather have Anna turn him down due to the awkwardness of the situation that let Melody think she was even an option. He knew how embarrassing that would be but he would take that. He'd take anything except Melody. Caden scoffed loudly, shaking his head as he stepped closer, arms folding across his chest. “Karl, what do you think you're doing? Do you even hear yourself?” he said, looking down at Anna in disgust. “Her? You're proposing to her?” Karl's eyes remained fixed on Anna. “Anna.” He called but she couldn't look at him. She was horrified, he knew she was. Her boss's boyfriend was proposing to her, it looked like a horrid mess from every angle. “Karl, do you know that even Anna is below you? Or is this your way of humiliating yourself further?” Caden glances at Melody. “You have a beautiful girlfriend right over here and you want to give that up by doing this?” A ripple of murmurs spread through the room. “Karl,” Anna whispered, her voice barely audible. “Please stand up.” He didn’t move. Not until she refuses him. His eyes were fixed on her face, surprisingly calm. “I’m waiting for your answer,” he said. Melody’s disbelief twisted into fury. “This is ridiculous,” she snapped. “You think this little performance is going to make me jealous?” She laughed again, harsher this time. “If that’s your plan, you’re doing a terrible job. You’re embarrassing yourself and this is only going to make me end things with you!” Anna took a step back and then another, shaking her head. Her job was at risk and Karl was behaving strangely. He could be using her to get back at Melody, she couldn't have herself thrown into that mix regardless of her feelings for him. “I'm sorry..” Anna hurried out of the office, not daring to look back. Karl exhaled and got on his feet just as Anna hurried out the door. Melody bursts into laughter, unable to conceal her happiness. “Look at yourself, Karl! You're just embarrassing yourself! Even Anna doesn't want a man like you!” Karl stood on his feet, putting the ring box in his pocket. “I'll take a rejection from her over a yes from you, Melody.” She was stunned, taken aback by his words. “What?” She whispered, he talked …you think you're some big shot uh?” Karl nodded, “Yes I am. Even now, you want me to apologise and still propose to you.” Melody opened her mouth but words seemed to fail her. “I..” stammered, “I'm just trying to be a responsible girlfriend!” “Karl, this is unnecessary.” Caden said, "She's your girl. Embarrassing her like this isn't right. Come on.” Karl chuckled, the fact that those words were coming from him was unbelievable.. Caden leans closer, “I'll try to persuade her okay? I'll convince her to forgive you but you'll need to apologise to her first." Caden taps Karl shoulder like he often does when he's trying to tell him he has his back. Karl reached for his hand and yanked it off his shoulder much to Caden's shock. Karl walks right past, “Don't make me laugh.” Karl walked out of his office and didn't look back once. “I can't believe this!” Melody gasped. “I'll go talk to him. This is insane..”Caden said. “Don't!” Melody snapped. “He'll be back soon to beg. This silly trick is not going to work on me!” ~~~~ Karl sat still on a bench in the park, his eyes staring into nothing in particular. If he had stayed in that office any longer, he might do something very drastic. Being thrown right into the office and seeing Caden and Melody when he hadn't prepared for it was enough to drive him insane. Karl leans his head on his knees, breathing hard, this was a lot. He had expected the rejection from Anna. Hell, he didn't even think it through before throwing her into this madness. She's Melody's assistant, he would only make things very difficult for her. Karl leaned back on the bench, feeling the sun on his skin but his heart was as cold as ice. His death kept replaying in his head and almost the horrible decisions he made in his past life followed right after. He glanced at his phone, still very indecisive. Should he call? Does he still have a place in that world? He hesitated briefly before dialing a number he hadn’t called in years. It rang. Karl exhaled, clenching and unclenching his fist. “Who is this?” a familiar voice finally answered. Karl exhaled, “…Grandfather?” There was a pause. “About damn time you called.”Latest Chapter
Chapter 20: The Undead
Karl barely felt the weight of the document in his hand as he stepped out of the café. His thumb slid over the corner of the document as if the paper might disappear if he stopped touching it.It was done.Ruchie Emold had signed the agreement. For the first time in weeks, his chest did not feel tight. His hands touched the folder again, he had a chance at his inheritance. Fucking hell, he still couldn't believe it! His hard work had paid off. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he pulled it out. The screen lit up.Anna.His fingers paused mid-reach, he had not heard from her since the hospital. He had called, left messages, stared at his phone long enough for it to dim again and again. He picked it up immediately. “Anna?”Her breath rushed into his ear before her voice did. “Karl… I need you to listen to me. Please.”The tension in her tone tightened something behind his ribs. He pulled to a stop, eyes flicking briefly to the road ahead. “What’s wrong?”“I wasn’t supposed to he
Chapter 19 : Breaking Point
Melody had not touched the glass of water on the center table since she had brought it in.It sat exactly where she had placed it earlier, beads of condensation running slowly down the side and soaking into a thin circle on her desk. She wasn't sure who she was more furious at, Anna or Karl but heck, she was too upset to think about firing that little wretch at the moment.Less than two days. That's all she had left. She paced the living room, hands running through her hair as her mind raced. This was not how she hoped it would happen! Karl was not supposed to behave like this. He was not supposed to tell her to start packing.Hell, he's been doing a lot recently that was driving her insane! Someone had come in to inspect the house and the house documents weren't in her room, the place it had always been. He was serious. Heck, he was fucking serious. Her phone lay face-down on the desk. She had turned it over twice already, as though expecting something to appear on the screen t
Chapter 18 : The Game Of Chess
Karl sat opposite Ruchie, his damp jacket folded over the back of his chair, the heat of the café still clinging to his skin long after the rain had stopped dripping from his hair. The chessboard rested between them, pieces already arranged, the white side turned toward him. The silence in the cafe was deafening, pushed aside by the pressure in his chest as he lifted his eyes to meet hers.Ruchie wrapped her fingers around her coffee cup but did not drink. Her gaze stayed on him, as though she were still weighing whether his arrival in that storm had been bravery or desperation.“You remember the rule,” she said calmly. “You lose, you answer everything I ask. No dodging.”He inclined his head. “And if I win.”She leaned back in her chair. “I grant you one favour. One.”Her assistant stood close to the wall, tablet pressed against her chest, her jaw set as though she were bracing for something unpleasant. The men in dark suits remained where they had not moved since Karl arrived, wat
Chapter 17: In The Nick Of Time
The storm had been building since morning.Karl noticed it the moment he stepped out of the bathroom and drew the curtain aside. The sky hung heavy above the street with dark clouds that rolled slowly over one another. The trees along the fence leaned in the wind, their leaves shaking violently, scattering across the driveway. He checked his watch. Late. Not dangerously late but close enough to make his chest tighten. He crossed the bedroom in long strides and reached for his phone on the bedside table. No missed calls or texts for Anna still. He'd have to worry about that later. Right now, he needed to meet Ruchie for that game and possibly get the document signed. His last text to Ruchie's secretary still sat unread from twenty minutes earlier. I’m on my way.Karl turned toward the wardrobe, pulled on a clean shirt, then stepped into his shoes. He grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair and headed down the hallway. The house was unusually quiet, way too quiet for the usual b
Chapter 16 : Eight More Days
Karl reached the house long after dark, the porch light already glowing. He stood at the gate with his phone pressed to his ear, listening to the line ring out again before dropping into silence. He lowered the phone and stared at the dark screen. Another missed call. Another unanswered message. He had walked the hospital parking space twice after Anna had left in a hurry. He caught sight of her taxi driving off and had tried calling her a dozen times to no avail. He'd dropped her a couple messages, asking if she was home safe but none of it got a response from her. His thumb hovering uselessly over her name, considering if he should call her again. “Can I blame her? Melody had embarrassed her because of me.” He tucks his phone in his pocket. The gate creaked as he pushed it open. The living room lights were on.Karl slowed the moment he stepped inside.Melody’s heels were by the door. Her handbag rested on the console table, unzipped, its contents spilling out as if she had drop
Chapter 15 : The Drama Queen
Karl was still standing when the nurse appeared at the end of the corridor and lifted her hand slightly, signalling to him.“You can come in now.”He moved immediately.Anna was no longer lying flat when he entered the small recovery room. She was half-seated, her injured ankle elevated on a thick cushion, wrapped neatly in a compression bandage. The swelling had gone down slightly, though the skin around her ankle still looked angry. Her hair had come loose from its neat ponytail. A few strands clung to her cheek. She looked tired. But when she saw him, her face shifted in a way that made something tighten low in his chest.“You’re back,” she said quietly.“I told you I would be.”He closed the door behind him and crossed the short distance to her bedside. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and plastic. A heart monitor beeped softly somewhere behind the wall. The nurse gave him a brief update before stepping aside.“No fracture. Severe sprain. She’ll need rest and physiotherapy.
