Chapter 51
51. When they got to the palace, it was almost dark. Master Orion walked behind the royal messenger, while his guard walked behind him. Although he looked calm on the outside, inside his heart was racing. What the hell does the king want from me now, he thought. The messenger stopped the large doors. "The king is inside, my lord.” He said. Orion nodded as he heard his arrival being announced and the guards ushered him in. Inside, the king sat behind a wide desk with some papers in his hand and a map spread. Orion was about to ask how that got to the throne room but then he took a look at the king’s face. The poor man looked tired. But then when he looked up at Orion, his face brightened a bit. "Ah, Orion. Come on, sit." Orion bowed before he went on to sit. "Your majesty, I was summoned." “Yes. This won't take long. In fact, you might already had an idea of what I’m calling you here for.” Orion just sat there, and for a moment, neither man spoke. The king leaned ba
Chapter 52
52.By the time Adrian had already reached his mansion, it was already dark and quiet. It was usually quiet, but Adrian noticed that this quietness had some sort of eerie feeling to it. He looked at the guards who bowed as he walked towards them away from the carriage. At a time like this, he would smile and relish the cool night air, but nothing felt right. He stood still for a moment, looking at the whole estate. His large mansion and the other structures looked as they always had, so did the compound and the gardens that he could see. Everything looked normal, so why didn’t it feel right? The guards could see that he was frowning. “Master, is something wrong?" Adrian didn't answer. He walked around, looking around and inside property. It felt like someone else had been here. “It’s just strange.” He muttered, walking back to the guards. They looked confused. "My lord?" Before Adrian could answer, the screen came up in front of him. [SYSTEM ALERT!] [MULTIPLE MAGIC
Chapter 53
53. The mansion was quiet, save for the guards outside that were still walking their patrol routes. Meanwhile, Adrian stood in the hallway outside Macy's door. His warning had disorientated her, he knew, and he had to make sure that she eventually fell asleep after all the tossing and turning and the sounds of worry she had been making. Once it was silent for a while, he pushed the door open slightly and peeked inside. Macy lay curled under her blankets, and sure enough, she was asleep. Adrian smiled. She was much stronger than she knew, and their circumstances had made him brother and parent. He was proud of her strength and wanted her safe and happy. The former would take priority for now, though. He closed the door gently, and then he walked down the hallway. Getting out of the large main building, he stretched his shoulders and yawned. "Alright, time for a little walk." He said to himself. He had barely taken five steps when the screen appeared before him. [SYSTEM UPDATE
Chapter 54
54. The royal palace was so alive with movements and a lot of work. The servants ran around from the kitchens to the stores carrying trays, fabrics, decorations, and stacks of plates. The smell of roasted meat filled the air. Lanterns were being hung along the marble walls while musicians practiced near the entrance hall. It looked like a celebration already, except it wasn't. This was only practice, Adrian found a certain kind of chaotic beauty in the whole thing, but at the same time, he felt nervous. "This escalated quite quickly." A servant rushed past him with a tray of wine bottles and another nearly bumped into him. "Be careful you sir!" The servant shouted before running off again. Adrian chuckled, the man didn't recognise him, but he was happy to be there. "So this is what a royal feast looks like before it's ready." Just then a loud voice called out behind him. "Adrian! I have been looking for you." He turned around and saw the king walking towards him with
Chapter 55
55. They were in a dark chamber, illuminated by just multiple live torches kept in iron bowls and hung on the walls. This was where the secret dealings were performed, and the place was decorated an older fashion to confuse anyone who might stumble across it. A tall man stood in the centre of the room with his hands behind his back, and others stood around him, forming a circle. They were all silent, deep in meditation. They had discovered a loophole, and this was their one and only chance to act fast. They had to succeed. Master Orion was the man in the centre. He suddenly felt a sudden wave of energy, snd opened his eyes immediately. Just then, one of the flames exploded in the bowl, and then went out. "Someone has interfered." His voice was very calm, but it was clear that he was angry. The others opened their eyes as well. "What happened to it?" Master Orion slowly turned his head. "One of our major sigils was found and destroyed. That's the only way the flame coul
Chapter 56
56. Yet again, nightfall had come. Walking at this time had become a routine for Adrian, with all the happenings. Yet, he found that the night came with a bit of ease for him. He felt refreshed, walking down the cold road with his hands in his coat pockets. “A beautiful night.” He muttered to himself. For the past two days he had been busy watching Macy train. And to his surprise, she was actually improving. He expected improvement but she was moving fast, and to say he felt proud wouldn’t even be putting it straight. She had gone from barely scratching training dummies to splitting the wood with just a dagger. Two days! She had jumped around like a kid afterwards. "Did you see that?” She squealed. Adrian smiled just remembering it. "She learns fast." He muttered. “Must run in the family.” He walked past a bakery that had already closed for the night but the smell of bread was still in the air. His mood became much better than before. Unfortunately, the peace didn't las
Chapter 57
57. The house looked somewhat abandoned, except that was how it was designed to be built, in case of anything. As actually, it was the meeting place of a lot of nobles and elite members of the city kingdom. Some people were dressed in their regular noble clothes and some others wore heavy cloaks with their faces half hidden. At the far end of the room stood master Orion, and he had his hands behind his back with a blank expression on his face. His mind was running in circles. A general had asked to meet to bring in new members, and he still had the issue of destroying Sit Bloodson. But it wasn’t just Adrian and new members on his mind, he wanted something more than he had ever had. He had one chance. A cloaked man went over to him, nodding. He bowed slightly towards Orion. "Master Orion. I was the one who called to see you.” Orion looked at him, recognising his voice. "General Gotham." The general nodded and gestured behind me. "I brought them with me." There were ab

58. Adrian didn’t know what to feel, but all in all, he was puzzled. Ever since he got the dragon system, he had never thought about opponents who could be stronger, but now… "Stronger than the strongest opponent I’ve faced yet. Mera…” He muttered. "System.” Adrian said. The screen came to life. “Could I have defeated that mage if I fought them?” [CURRENT PROBABILITY OF VICTORY: VERY LOW.] Adrian nodded, looking at the screen. "Well that's fucking rude. So there's someone walking around this city who can wipe the floor with me?" [CONFIRMED.] Adrian sighed, knowing he’d have to increase his training. "Fantastic." He looked up at the dark sky remembering how it wasn’t that long that he was getting beaten up by Ciara’s parents, just for existing. So much had happened since then, and even now, he had a long way to go. “My life really went off the rails." [NEW DATA DETECTED!] Adrian frowned. "What is this now?" Chapter 59
59. Adrian was already asleep by the time the rumours started to spread. Before anyone knew it, it was all over the city. “What do you mean four bodies?” "I'm telling you what I heard! And they were dressed strangely. I don’t understand…” In the market centre, people were arguing about the identity of the dead. "They were assassins!” A young boy spoke up. "My brother works with the city watchers, and he said they looked like assassins." He puffed his chest proudly as his mother dragged him off, mouthing apologies. It wasn’t good to be in the centre of death, but now, it was what anyone and everyone in the kingdom could talk about. "It’s just the blabbering of a young child, no official statement has been released.” “That is true, but who could have killed them? I heard one was cut clean in half.” “Half is better, I was told that skulls were crushed. What kind of power…?” With no answers, the rumours spread faster and each assumption was worse than the previous.I
Chapter 60
60. Things just seemed to be falling apart. After hoping that the king would punish Adrian severely, all master Orion heard was that Adrian was receiving nothing but praises from the king in anticipation of the feast that was to be held in his name. … He had no words for such a thing. How could the king be so trusting of such a man? Adrian was untrustworthy to say in the least, and wouldn’t serve as a valuable pawn to him. He walked back into his room of alchemy. He didn’t believe this nonsense about Adrian being a nonmagical, there had to be more to it. No good soldier could hold their ground against Mera, let alone defeating her. He got out his crystal ball, setting it in place before staring at it. It came on, and immediately, he closed his eyes in concentration. “He was declared nonmagical. If that’s the case, then I have to recheck.” Master Orion said. The stories of people changing were only a myth. Nobody ever went from even being a zero to an E-rank, let alone a mage.
