Chapter 81
81. In spite of all the efforts to look for Orion, nobody had found him yet. Orion was calm and still, he didn't care about the chaos that was happening above. He had made his au out of the palace undergrounds to his destination. There was an ancient, massive structure sealed in black stone that was towering in front him. Its surface was covered in strange symbols that moved all around, and there were chains made of powerful starlight wrapped tightly around it, binding it shut, but it wasn't as tightly wrapped as it should be. Orion went closer to it. "So this is where you've been all this time.” He said quietly. There was no response, but he felt something answer him. He raised his hand slowly and the symbols carved into the walls lit up immediately started to glow bright while moving. "The city burns.” Orion continued, he sounded amused by what he saw. "Fear, anger, and panic was such beautiful fuel. Humans really are predictable pathetic creatures." A low hum filled

The air underground was different. Not just colder, but heavier. Thicker. Like it had weight. Each step Adrian took down the spiraling staircase felt like he was descending into something alive. The light from above faded quickly, swallowed whole by the dark. Only faint, flickering blue veins ran along the stone walls now, thin lines of energy that pulsed like a heartbeat. Adrian’s breathing grew uneven. Not just from the injuries. Something down here was calling. “Stay close,” Zalaria said quietly, her voice lower than before. Even she seemed affected. Princess Sue didn’t reply. Her hand hovered just behind Adrian’s back, ready to catch him again if needed. “I’m fine,” Adrian muttered. “You’re not,” she replied immediately. “I said I’m fine.” “You nearly died an hour ago.” “And I’m still here.” “That’s not the same thing.” He didn’t answer. Because deep down, he knew she was right. [WARNING.] [EXTERNAL INFLUENCE DETECTED.] [MENTAL RESISTANCE ADVISED.] Adrian’s ste

82. “Stop!” Adrian suddenly hissed, holding a wall. “Do you feel that?” He asked. “Feel it?” Princess Sue snapped. “I can barely breathe.” Zalaria didn’t stop walking. “That’s ritual pressure. The closer we get, the worse it gets.” “Great, love that for us.” Another tremor shook the narrow stairs. Dust fell from above, coating their head and shoulders. [WARNING: ENERGY DENSITY INCREASING.] He e took in a deep breath. “System, keep me stable.” [LIMITED SUPPORT AVAILABLE.] “Of course. Employ.” They finally got off the stairs into a long underground passage. The walls were cracked, and even those had those dark lines glowing through them. Princess Sue leaned closer to look at them. “Those symbols…” “Yeah.” Zalaria said. “This is where they connect.” “So this whole city is basically one big spell circle?” “Exactly.” “That’s insane.” “Welcome to my life, your majesty.” Zalaria replied dryly. They suddenly heard a low growl from deeper in the

Henry's scowl became even worse as he heard Adrian's words. Who the fuck did the disgraced knight think he was? "What did you just say?" Prince Henry asked. "I said I can heal him." "The hell you can!" Henry snapped like a mad dog, walking up to Adrian. "Don't touch him!" Adrian didn't bother even look at him. "Step aside, Prince." "I said don't fucking touch him!" Henry shoved Adrian back. "Do you think that this is some kind of silly game? You poisoned him and now you want to play hero?" Adrian's eyes slowly met prince Henry's, and in that moment he looked dangerous. Henry saw it and took a step back. "Anyone with working eyes could have seen that I wasn't the one who stabbed him. And trust that if I wanted him dead, he would already be dead." That shut a few people up, but not Henry. "Oh, listen to him!" Henry laughed bitterly from a safe distance. "Can you all hear that? He's threatening us now!" "I'm not threatening anyone. I just want to save our king,

83. “He has been here the entire time?” Princess Sue exclaimed. Orion smiled, calmly. His hands were still behind his back, and the black chains on the massive structure were rattling with the energy pulsing through the chamber. “Alive, yes. I’m glad that you’re finally here, Adrian.” Orion said. “I knew you’d come. Every step of this was meant for you to be here right now.” Adrian narrowed his eyes at the crazy man. “What the hell are you talking about? You tried to… you poisoned me. You made everyone think I was a traitor. You sent creatures to kill me. You—” Orion raised a hand, cutting him off. “All of that was extremely necessary.” His said in a soft, almost hypnotic, manner. “Every thing I did was necessary to push you, Adrian. To force you to be here at the exact moment you are now. You are my golden boy.” “That doesn’t make any sense, he almost died.” Princess Sue said. “What would have happened if he did?” “It didn’t happen, did it?” Adrian could see t

84. Orion then turned around and pointed at the large structure. “It is time!” For a second, nothing happened. The team looked around in confusion and then all of a sudden, the chains started to move. They went from making small movements and rattling noises to full on moving like a giant, terrifying snake. There was a loud grating noise as the sealed structure behind Orion began to split open. The black stone cracked down the middle, glowing lines spreading like veins under skin. They were experiencing a kind of sensation that kept them rooted to one spot in disbelief and wonder. Princess Sue grabbed her chest. “I can't breathe properly..." Zalaria's eyes widened. “What is this?” A wisp of smoke seeped out of the crack, getting thicker by the second, and for a moment, Adrian could have sworn that he saw eyes in it. Adrian felt it brush past his skin and his body reacted instantly. [WARNING: UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.] [THREAT LEVEL: ???] “What the fuck?” Adria

Outside the palace, the city shook heavily one last time, and it was the greatest one yet. The glowing symbols that ran through the streets began to fade one by one like dying stars. People in the streets held on to various things around them, clutching their chests. "What just happened?" "Is it over?" “We’re going to die!” Inside the ruined underground chamber, it was worse as a section of the ceiling had caved in completely, killing some people who had gone under. “What do we do now, sir?” One of the guards asked their leader. The leader looked at the giant mass of stone, dirt, and rubble, frowning. It wasn’t safe for him in there, but suddenly, he saw a movement. “Wait.” He said to them. A hand pushed out through the rubble, shaking. It punched out debris and a head appeared, coughing. “Fuck!” It was Adrian. His body felt like it had been dragged through fire and crushed at the same time. [SYSTEM STATUS: CRITICAL!] [ENERGY LEVEL: 3%] “I’m still alive..

86. The court couldn’t even argue after that, not openly, at least for no one wanted to challenge the king to his face. The guard beside him spoke. "You're free to move within the palace grounds.” The man said stiffly. "But you will report for checkups at the end of every day until your health is in pristine condition, and you will be watched at all times." Adrian raised a brow. “So... I'm a prisoner with better stuff?" "You are a protected asset. That’s how your kind is treated regardless.” “My kind?” Adrian said, not liking how the words sounded. A few days had passed and the palace felt different now. People still gave him strange looks whenever he passed by them, but Adrian had long learned how to ignore background noise. "Is that him?" "That's the one the king spared..." They spoke about him loke hr didn’t deserve any kind of trial, like he was an enemy. Adrian rolled his eyes as he walked slowly down the hallway. His body still hurt, but he was walki

87. In the courtyard, soldiers stood in neat lines while nobles gathered for the event. There were a lot of emotions in the air but the most prevalent were relief, and pride. “At least the prince acted quickly." "Yes, if not for him, we might have all died." "He contained it, didn't he? That’s what the pamphlets said.” "That's what I heard too." “But I also hear it was that knight, what changed?” “He’s no longer a knight, and old news circulate all the time.” The commoners and some nobles continue to speak, and in front of them all stood Prince Henry. He looked like the tall, proud version of him again, like nothing had ever touched him. Henry held his chin high as a nobleman bowed deeply before him. "Your highness, your bravery saved this kingdom, we are all grateful." Henry nodded. "Yes, it was necessary and extremely risky. I almost died.” "We are grateful, truly." Someone else said. "Of course you are.” Henry said. “Your prince risked his life to

88. "Adrian, look at this!" Princess Sue said, holding something that looked like an envelope. Adrian raised a brow as he let her into his chambers. "What's the matter?" "Zalaria is gone!" She exclaimed. "Just like that, it's so..." "She left?" Adrian frowned. "How? Why? We haven't even worked out the details of all that has been happening!" Princess Sue stood near his window with her arms folded, looking more annoyed than surprised. "She didn't inform anyone properly. Nobody among my servants knew when she left, and she didn't even care to tell me either." "That's not suspicious at all, very normal behaviour." Adrian said sarcastically. "She's an alchemist!" Princess Sue defended her. "And so?" "She's never normal. Alchemists are very strange people." Adrian nodded. "Fair point." There was a pause and Princess Sue waved the envelope in her hand in Adrian's face. "She did leave something behind, though." Adrian raised a brow. "What did sh
