ELYRIA
Micheal walked slowly down the familiar streets of his neighborhood, his backpack hanging loosely over one shoulder. He looked tired. His clothes were worn and dusty, and anyone who saw him would know he’d had a rough day.In front of him was a restaurant and people were gathered around the restaurant, this was a place he always passed by.But now in front of this restaurant there was an unusual crowd of people.Well he'd never seen this crowd before. But he didn't care.As he passed by the restaurant, he caught a glimpse of the TV screen through the window. The TV flashed a government announcement: "...and in other news, the government has officially released Elyria, a revolutionary virtual reality game, free for everyone above fifteen years old. After two weeks of intense testing, Elyria has been deemed beneficial for cognitive development..."Micheal didn't linger to watch the rest of the announcement. He continued walking as his stomach was growling with hunger. The constant feeli
THIS IS TOO REAL
Alex hesitated. “Uh… the competition starts in three days,” he said.Michael’s eyes narrowed. He wasn’t sure if joining this game was the right decision. But he had no choice. The hype around the game was massive, and maybe—just maybe—he could get lucky and win something.“And the cash prize?” Michael asked.Alex hesitated again. “I’m not completely sure,” he said. “It might just be a rumor. The government hasn’t said anything official yet. But I heard that about thirty thousand dollars will be shared among the top ten players after two weeks.”“Our school is supporting it too,” Alex continued. “They say it helps improve brain performance. But it’s only for people fifteen and above.”Michael glanced at Maya. She sat curled in a corner, her eyes red from crying. He walked over and knelt beside her. “You’re not hurt, right?” he asked softly.Maya wiped her tears. “Yeah… I’m okay,” she whispered.Michael placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. “I’ll find a way to take care of us,” he said.
SHIT
“Where the fuck is the teleportation portal?” Michael yelled on top of his lungs, but all he received was silence. The only response was the thundering roar of the monster, getting closer and closer.Michael cursed under his breath as he ran as fast as his legs could carry him, but his legs felt like lead, heavy and slow. The monster's roar grew louder, and Michael was sure that the monster was right next to him. Just when he looked back he saw the monster swiping at him. In desperation, Michael darted into a narrow alleyway, hoping to lose the creature, and luckily he did with its claws swiping just a few meters away from his face, but even then, its force threw him off balance.Luckily, the werewolf-like creature continued into the distance. Every bit felt so real—his heartbeat and everything. He couldn't tell the difference between the so-called “Virtual” and “Real.”“You should hurry up and go to the Ground of Awakening, you won't survive a day without powers.”Still reeling fro
GATHERING
Michael paused what he was doing and stared up at the towering figure in front of him.The guy in front of him was Victor, a towering figure who had been terrorizing him for weeks, collecting a weekly “debt” of 50 cents—a supposed repayment for the two dollars’ worth of food Victor claimed Michael had knocked out of his hands in the canteen. But Michael knew the truth—he had been sitting alone, minding his own business, when Victor walked by, tripped, and spilled his own food.Yet Victor had used Michael as a scapegoat, demanding he pay back the money. Every Friday, he would come demanding 50 cents with his fist clenched, ready to strike if Michael couldn’t pay.The memory of Victor’s previous bullying flashed through Michael’s mind—the public humiliation, the snickers from classmates, and the feeling of helplessness.Michael’s anger rose.“I don’t have anything,” Michael said, trying to calm himself.Maybe because he had just brushed past death in Elyria that morning, Victor’s toweri
TWO WEEKS TESTING? WHAT A JOKE
The principal's words caused the students to murmur among themselves. As the murmurs grew louder, the principal slammed his hand on the podium, making everyone jump. “Quiet!” he thundered. The principal’s eyes were fierce.Seeing that everyone was silent, he continued.“For those who don’t know, Elyria is a revolutionary virtual game that aids in cognitive development. It’s another world entirely.”Everyone was quiet, all eyes fixed on the principal.Michael thought silently to himself. What did the principal mean by “another world entirely”?The principal continued, his voice serious.“The government and the developers have revealed that there are no NPCs in the game, including the monsters.”The crowd erupted into shocked murmurs and gasps. Students looked at each other in disbelief, their eyes wide with wonder.Michael’s mind was racing.“So that monster wasn’t an NPC?” he thought.“Then what was it? A player?” Michael became confused. Were NPCs humans too?“What kind of game is th
TWINS
The principal's expression remained solemn as he concluded,"That is all for now. I know this information may be overwhelming, but telling you is paramount.""Remember, the government will reveal more when the time is right.""Before I leave, let me invite someone everyone knows — the city mayor."The principal turned toward the mayor with a respectful gaze. The mayor stood up with a bright smile. He was not really a tall man, but not short either. He had chubby cheeks and thick brows that made him look overfed. He wore a white suit with a golden tie.Everyone stood up to welcome him.Climbing up the podium, he looked at the crowd, who were all standing in ovation, welcoming his presence. His smile grew wider."Good day, everyone," he began after the applause died down."I was informed that today is the last day of school for this section, so I decided to come in person because some of you will be playing Elyria throughout the holiday."So that I could explain some things to you, espe
SPIRIT QI
Michael walked up to the twins. They turned to face him."Hey, what's up?" Michael asked, trying to sound casual."Hi," they said in unison as they sized Michael up from head to toe.His short hair was disheveled, and his black eyes, which normally carried an uncaring glint, were now scanning the two girls with open interest."I'm Michael. I heard you guys talking about the Ground of Awakening. I just got here, so I was wondering if I could tag along?" he asked, going straight to the point."You're heading there too? Of course, you can tag along," the twin with the black hair said, sounding surprisingly welcoming.Michael had thought it would be difficult trying to tag along with these two beauties."Aina!" Kaida chimed in, her voice cold but melodious. The contrast between the warmth of the first twin's words and the chill in Kaida's tone was striking. The girl with the black hair was Aina, and the one with the white hair was Kaida. Two names that shared similar vowel sounds.Well, M
WHAT THE HELL?
Aina's eyes widened in astonishment."It took us 30 minutes to sense it… or is it because we're in the Ground of Awakening? Spirit energy is thickest here."She glanced at Kaida, who nodded in agreement, still looking stunned.Micheal shrugged, feeling a bit perplexed by their reaction."I just did what you told me to do. What's the big deal?"Aina's expression turned serious, her eyes sparkling with excitement."The big deal is that you sensed the spirit energy immediately. That's unprecedented. Most people take days, even weeks, to sense it for the first time. And it's only when you sense the spirit qi that you can awaken your spirit weapon," Aina said, feeling agitated by Micheal's unconcerned reaction."And you guys sensed it within 30 minutes? Isn't that too short judging from your words?" Micheal asked, his brows raised."That's us. We are naturally special. But you?" Aina rolled her eyes at Micheal."But me? I'm badass," Micheal replied, smirking."Hmph," Kaida snorted. She fel
FIRE AND ICE
This sensation came from Aina and Kaida. The both of them sat down with their eyes closed. The gentle spirit Qi now surged towards them. It was stunning as it formed visible waves around their bodies, and the spirit qi, that was invisible was now visible to the naked eye.Aina's body was surrounded by flames. Waves of fire rolled across her skin like a living thing. The heat emanating from her was intense, causing Micheal to long for water. Micheal, who was standing mere feet away, felt his skin begin to crack from the heat. But then he felt a sudden chill.Kaida, who was by her side was hard to see because her body was surrounded by mist. The air around her seemed to freeze, and even the moisture in the atmosphere condensed into glittering shards suspended in the air. The cold was biting. Micheal was shocked beyond words. He opened his mouth wide as he stared at them. These two!!As the girls continued absorbing the spirit qi, their powers grew. Kaida's icy aura expanded, and ice spr
A SURPRISING WEAPON
Micheal's eyes widened as the hazy image was revealed inside of him.It started slowly, and due to how long he had awakened his weapon, he was expecting something awesome.Something cool. But as he saw what was revealed, he kind of wished that he hadn't wasted all that time here and instead, slept the whole day off in the real world. He couldn't believe what he was seeing."No, no, no... this can't be right?" Micheal whispered to himself.Micheal was really speechless, his face twitched.God, please let this not be what I'm thinking. It was as if he was pleading with a higher power to change the outcome. The image was done solidifying, and it was as he thought.A mask!A f**king damn black mask.It was plain and unassuming.Micheal couldn't even see how this mask could be used as a weapon.Others had awakened powerful weapons—swords, bows, spears—but him? A mask? It seemed so... funny.Micheal's mind was blank for a long time.He really needed the cash prize to take care of himself an
